all excited. with shouts of "god is greatest." they firmly believe after six months of war, victory is close. thousands of rebels who used to fight in small, disconnected groups are now united. some are driveing. but most are just walking to tripoli. on this front line in motion, we find 29-year-old lab technician. he's already walked 15 miles today and won't stop, he says, until he reaches gadhafi's compound in tripoli. >> i'm one of the people that's going to -- to keep our country free. >> reporter: but there are dangers fighting along an exposed highway. there's little cover. as we film, shots ring out. close. right now it stopped. it seems we're caught in the cross fire of at least two snipers. the rebels fan out, looking for the snipers in a nearby orchard and buildings. they don't find them. with a frontline this fluid, this uncertain, the wounded are

just patched up by the roadside. or rushed back to hospitals miles away. but today we also saw victory. as the rebels capture new territory, they rescue some of their own. these men were prisoners taken by gadhafi's troops. disoriented and bedraggled, freed moments ago, after days in dark cells. >> the gadhafi army take me out of my house and they take me to prison! >> reporter: conquering tripoli will take more than just will and bravery, both in ample supply here. in a new audio statement broadcast today, gadhafi says he's still in tripoli and urgently calls on his supporters to defend him. and a libyan state tv anchor pulls a gun as she vows never to give up her station to the rebels. but rebels have already taken a military base on the edge

in this beating case. police say the suspect is a male samoaian, 25 to 30 years old, between 6'3" and 6'5", weighing between 225 and 260 pounds. he had a goatee and a lon curly pony tail at the game. san francisco mayor ed lee and oakland mayor gene qualm were both at last night's game and todayy in issued a joint statement saying, quote, violence will not be tolerated at either of our stadiums. the incidents at candlestick park are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. our fans come to oour stadiums

turned out not to be the case. then there was speculation that perhaps they would be released as a symbolic gesture during the holy month of ramadan. still ten days of ramadan remaining so that could still be the case. >> there's still a humanitarian option, and there is hope that in the month of ramadan that possibility will be looked into very seriously. >> reporter: if president ahmadinejad wants to capitalize on that gesture, there will be plenty of eyes on him during his trip to new york during next month's general assembly at the united nationss. >> if there's a moment, an opportunity, that's it. because that's when presidents and other leaders who are feeling a lot of world heat want to show people that were really okay, honest to goodness, so there may be that opportunity as a gesture of kindness to release those fellows at that time. >> iran cited humanitarian grounds for the release of the third hiker arrested with fattal

and bauer. oakland's sarah shourd was released last september. islamic mercy is what the spokesman for the iranian court cited for another american convicted of spying in 1979. she was sentenced to eight years in prison but an appeals court cut the sentence for two years and suspended the sentence and let her return to the u.s. a spokesman for the iranian court said she earned that iranian mercy because she showed regret and worked with authorities. chris sanchez. >> as you heard, that was chris sanchez reporting. bauer and fattal's family released a statement reading, quote, we appeal to the authorities in iran to show compassion and allow them to return home to our families without delay. also, secretary of state hillary clinton also reacted to the sentence today. she released a statement reading, quote, we continue to call and work for their immediate release. it is time for them to return home and be reunited with their families. and now for a look at a change in store for the weather around here. we want to check in with

meteorologist rob. a really nice day. >> sea breeze winning the battle. 60s from oakland and 82 down around gilroy. backing away from the coast around santa cruz and away from the salinas valley, areas around san francisco warmed up today. thanks to all the clouds, that's about to change. watching two major changes to our weather first. the ridge of high pressure which has been off to our south and east and the desert southwest is going to build back to the bay area and beginning tomorrow temperatures are going to climb on up, and we're actually talking 90s back in the forecast and watching this moisture from former tropical depression greg towards the bay area may lead to a chance of mid-week thunder. pretty wild changes in the seven-day forecast. a full look at that coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, rob. ahead. another b.a.r.t. protest brewing after a phone shut dunne and how it might impact your commute tomorrow.

circus. we'll show you. yet another b.a.r.t. protest is brewing. more than 200 people posted on a facebook page. they plan to join tomorrow's suggested protest at the civic center station in the city. meantime, b.a.r.t. leaders have issued a letter to its riders defending the decision to shut down cell phone service earlier this month. the decision came after the protests shown here from last month. that protest disrupted 96 trains at the height of rush hour on july 11th. when leaders learned protesters planned to use cell phones to coordinate another protest, they say the situation qualified as, quote, serious and imminent threat to the safety of b.a.r.t. passengers and personnel but critics say b.a.r.t. overstepped its boundaries by cutting off phone service and now b.a.r.t. decided to hold a public meeting on wednesday to discuss the

forecast and sports, and the giants as well. one charter plane, 500 medical volunteers and a week-lock trip across the nation. this is what 150 chronically ill children took part in thanks to a program called kids of courage. on the san francisco leg of the trip, the kids got to visit six flags discovery kingdom, raging waters and an oakland a's game, and today they went to the circus. a look now at how one program gives lasting smiles to those who may just need them the most. >> 150 kids with this group. you have everything from cancer, cerebral palsy, to must cla dystrophy, we have 50 different

away from santa cruz and sunshine today. do want to point out dallas weather. we've got, of course, the chargers and cowboys coming up. it is a covered cowboy stadium now and over towards arlington in dallas. look at the low in dallas, 82 degrees. warmer than most of the higher temperatures we saw in the bay area. 105 tomorrow and we'll warm up but not nearly as warm as that. our forecast heading towards the middle part of the week. maybe some misty skies for tomorrow morning, but our inland valleys tomorrow will start to see more 80s popping up, especially south of san jose and east of castro valley so a little bit of a warmup tomorrow so you'll be surprised by tuesday's high temperatures coming up here in the seven-day forecast. 85 in concord and for the north bay highs mostly in the 70s, but come tuesday we're talking mid-90s. just like that, and then wednesday, watch out for the chance of some mountain thunder along the coastal range. summer officially back for the

dan runsler trying to fill jonathan sanchez's shoes in his first major league start. he did not make it out of the second inning. in 1 2/3 he gave up three runs and throwing a whopping 43 pitches. mike fontenot comes through with a clutch sacrifice fly to deep left center and nate schurlts were score off that to tie the game at four. that's how things stayed until the 11th and pablo sandovalig nod the strain in his shoulder. a mega clutch two-n homer over the wall in center. giants prevail, 6-4. while the giants day ends much better than it started, the -- this morning the team placed ace reliever brian wilson on the 15-day disabled list res active to august 16th. wilson is suffering from elbow inflammation. manager bruce bochy says wilson could be back as early as august 31st. the cups are back that day. more g-men news came out of the

braves/d'backs matchup. all you need is an alex gonzalez in the third to put you up 1-0. one run was all that tim hudson needed. he struck out seven, walked only three and the braves get a bonus out after striking out that player. when the catcher stealing, braves win 1-0 and complete the sweep. d backs have lost five straight and the lead over the giants is down to 1 1/2 games. the a's could have lived with one run against the blue jays. the jays secured the only run with jose bautista's solo homer. leading the league in home runs. a's fall 1-0 to notch their league leading 13th shutout loss of the year. and that's sports. i know i'm getting ready to scout some fancy football with chargers and the cowboys at the top of the hour. how about you? >> oh, yeah.

an update on our top story. rebels are celebrating in tripoli tonight, that's after reports that the military units in charge of moammar gadhafi in tripoli has surrendered. people celebrated on the streets less than an hour ago. >> rebels are reportedly flowing into the capital now are little resistance. there's claims that rebels have captured moammar gadhafi's son a

top leader in the regime. gadhafi is still middle east to be in tripoli but, again, there are reports tonight that tripoli has fallen. the rebels have essentially taken over control of tripoli, but, again, moammar gadhafi is not in custody. it's unclear where he is. they believe he's somewhere in tripoli tonight. we also have an update on the situation with the 49er and raiders fans from last night. san francisco police say two men, one shot and the other beaten after last night's game at candlestick. both have been upgraded from critical to serious condition tonight. that's good news. san francisco police say the shooting happened as the game between the niners and the raiders was letting out. another attack happened in the men's restroom at candlestick. a 26-year-old san francisco man was unconscious with severe head trauma, but, again, their conditions have been upgraded at this point. so right now we want to check on the weather one more type. we do have a big change coming

up on the weather. what's going on? >> we'll be watching the temperatures not only warming up now as we head towards tomorrow. right now can you see 70s in the bay area outtowards the tri-valley. moisture watching now, right towards southern california. two things we were talking about. temperaturesow will start to climb, starting tomorrow. starting tuesday we're talking mid-90s but on the west side of the ridge of high pressure, tropical depression greg may toss a slight chance of mountain thunder. see it playing out here in your mountain forecast. almost a 23-degree jump in temperature on tuesday. thunder on wednesday and thursday and friday the sea breeze picks up a little bit. as we head towards next weekend, it is looking like a warmer weekend with 80s and s weekend and cooling somewhat, approaching next sunday, but the game you're about to see right on nbc, the lows in dallas, mid-80s torrent and that's warmer an any place around the bay area today. that's wre
