milestone. it has now been a decade since our lives were forever changed by the tragic and heart wrenching events of 9/11. yesterday was a day for americans to remember the many lives taken from us, people who will never be forgotten. here is nbc's lester holt. >> reporter: a permanent memorial to the victims of 9/11 where water falls spill into the footprints, remembering the tears that flowed on this anniversary. >> and my dad. >> former first lady laura bush wept as wives, husbands, parents and children, some too young to remember their moms or dads told us who their lost. >> and my father, who i never met because i was many my mom's belly. >> others told us what they lost. >> i wish my dad had been there

yesterday we saw a very warm day in the west. we had some record high temperatures in seattle. summer has not ended for the pacific northwest. a little cooler for the coast. 73 in san francisco. it was not bad and the cloud cover kept you down not in the 100s in phoenix. saw some showers out there. just enough moisture coming off the pacific in the bay of california that we are watching the showers in the north country of arizona, but that's about it. if you are in arizona or new mexico, have that umbrella with you. we are still warm in the rest of the west but there is cooler air that will sink to the south. it will stay dry in the forecast but we will be watching temperatures a little bit lower. these are just beautiful days for you. gorgeous end to summer. we are still warm in vegas and

i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. president obama will begin a new campaign like push. the president will speak before public workers in the rose garden today before heading out on the road to rally support. and niger's government says that another of gadhafi's son has been captured. hids departure comes as rebels claim to have taken all but total control of one of the final strongholds. and anti-american cleric is urging followers to stop attacking u.s. troops in iraq so that their withdrawal from the country is close. it is aimed at putting pressure on leaders who are asking some

forces to stay. >> seven workers including two americans missing in the gulf of mexico since thursday have but rescued. the group escaped to a capsule after a tropical storm disabled their rig. and in india, one person was killed after an overcrowded balcony collapsed. it came during a festival celebrating a hindu god. new research shows levels of pesticides commonly encountersed across the country in food as well as around the home are significantly increasing children's risk of developing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. experts say diet is the predominant source in people who switch to an organic diet typically decrease pesticide by-product levels in their system by 85% to 90%. for more information on this and other health stories, check out

the health page at msnbc.com. >> and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 10,992 after sinking 303 points on friday. the s&p tumbled 31 and the nasdaq fell a whooping 61 points. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei stumbled 201 points while in hong kong the hang seng plummeted 836. the same worries about europe that sparked a broad sell-off on wall street friday caught up with asian markets today. despite strong data out of china this weekend, investors sold off stocks and sent the euro to a six-month low this morning. global markets were rattled friday after a top german board member resigned from the european bank reportedly over its controversial bond buying

program. elsewhere, yahoo!'s ousted chief resigned from the company board after saying she would stay on in that role. probably didn't help that after being fired, barts told fortune magazine that yahoo!'s board were "dufasses". cargill is recalling more ground turkey after an arkansas plant tested positive for salmonella. gas is up to $3.67 a gallon. and photographs of amelia airhardt fetched a high price at auction pulling in more than 3 $1,000. one of the greatest games

if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, an opening day in the nfl dedicated to remembering 9/11 ended with the new york jets in a much tougher fight with the dallas cowboys than anyone expected. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. it was an opening sunday to the nfl season like none other. fans and teams united around the nation with one common bond, to remember 9/11. we start in new jersey 12 miles from ground zero. an emotional pregame ceremony before the jets/cowboys game. this came down to the final minutes when the jets special teams came up big. the punt. dupont picked it up and was in for the touchdown. new york completed the come back with 3 -- 32 seconds left. 50 yards out and the jets rally from 14 town to beat the cowboy webs 27-24. the tributes continued in our nation's capital. new york's eli manning led the league in interceptions and he was back at it yesterday.

the red skins won it 28-14. eagles were one of the favorites to win the super bowl. if they continue to play like this, hand them the trophy. eagles beat the rams, 31-13. the rams look like they had a super bowl hangover. baltimore won in a whooper 5-7. the panthers cam newton had a record breaking day for the cardinals. cam newton became the first player in nfl history to throw for over 400 yards in his debut, but that's not enough. how is life without peyton manning going for the colts? not very well. career day filling in for arian foster. texas won it big, 34-7. finally, if you thought the football players were fired up, you obviously missed the women's final of the u.s. open. it's serena williams taking on samantha stosur. stosur reached for the return and serena shouted, come on. the umpire awarded the point to stosur. williams called the umpire i

huntington. now here's a look at this morning's headlines in entertainment. nothing could stop "contagion" from infecting audiences with a box office win this weekend. they took the top spot with just over $23 million reaching expectations despite dismal overall box office figures for this weekend compared to last year. "warrior" debuted with just over $5.5 million, still good enough for third place. it may be the year of the r-rated comedy, but bucky larson "born to be a star" bombed with just $1.5 million for the weekend. finally, could a new showbiz power be evolving? jennifer lopez and bradley cooper went out for what was
