high drama against the cowboys. >> our players got to dig down and finish the game. this is the national football league. >> a heart breaker for the raiders. what went wrong in buffalo? >> the franchise is stronger than ever. >> meet the new boss, same as the old boss. the sunday sit-down on the direction of the giants. romo, our direct, coming right at you. >> it is game time. >> it was another thriller on sunday night football. we welcome you in xfinity sports sunday. boy, for the locals, the 49ers, the raiders, bill, they both had wins in their hands. >> yes, they did.
9:06 pm
the tale of two halves. first half, one of the best team in the game. second half, one of the worst. for the 49ers, they took to it halftime. you've got to be able to make the play and they were not able to do it. >> let's to go candlestick park. it's the 49ers and the cowboys. that means an awful lot. a lot riding on this. jim harbaugh trying to go 2-0 in his nfl career. second quarter, 49ers up 7-0. third and six. and alex smith finds kyle williams. a heck of a play. >> unbelievable concentration. to be able to come down with this play. the two starting wide receivers are down. you have to make plays if you're a young guy. sure enough, he does it. great execution. >> 14-0. tony romo is out with two broken ribs. enter 38-year-old back-up john kitna. and after the interceptions, how about this? finding miles in the end zone. >> he can throw the football.
9:07 pm
>> it's tied 14-14 and alex make a big play. >> yes, he does. they take advantage of the coverage with the outside linebacker on walker. >> 21-14 at the time. fourth quarter, same score. and a 55-yard field goal for david akers. he makes it. the longest field goal in the history of candlestick. 49ers up 10. but keep looking. called for leverage. this penalty would have given the 49ers a first down but harbaugh keeps the points on the board. that's something we'll talk about. later in the fourth, romo. he's back in the game. this guy is tough and so is miles austin. >> they don't have an answer for mile austin. three touchdowns on the day. >> dallas cuts the lead to 24-21. four seconds left. and the cowboys need a 48 yarder from a rookie kicker. dan bailey makes it. the niners win the coin toss but they punt. this is what happens on the first play by dallas. >> that was way, way too easy.
9:08 pm
safety bites on play action. why do you call him a safety? you just don't do that. >> jesse holley, 371. from 19 yards out, the bailey field goal is good. the cowboys come back and win 27-24 them come back from ten points down in the fourth. this one, a very tough one. coughing pup 10-point for you quarter lead. alex smith, efficient throwing two touchdowns. no real money game to speak of. the defense against a hurt tony romo. the back-up, john kitna, they record only one. mindy has more. >> reporter: the 49ers built a 14-0 lead when their mistakes began to cost them. >> the leaping catch touchdown. what a beautiful throw. >> honestly, the guys, we're focused. we're ready to get back after it and get back to the next opponent. we felt like we should have won this game.
9:09 pm
it is what it is. >> played against a very good team to have their backs against the wall. you know? we're in a must-win situation. and i think a few plays go differently and all of a sudden, it's a different game. >> i'm proud of the guys. i thought they played well enough to win. but we did win. and it is the national football league. it's hard to get those wins. i take my hat off to the cowboys. they dug themselves out of a hole. came back and won it. >> reporter: the 49ers limited dallas to only 49 yards rushing but had its hands full containing the passing game. it includes seven plays of 20 yards or more. >> obviously, there was some breakdowns in there somewhere. at the end of the day, i don't want to take anything from them. they made the plays. and we didn't. >> reporter: the 49ers' passing game took another hit. already with that wide receiver michael crabtree who was inactive for this game with a foot injury, the team lost braylon edwards. he had one reception for 21 yards in the first quarter
9:10 pm
before leaving the game with a knee injury. he never returned. edwards is scheduled to have an mri on monday to determine the extent of that injury. at candlestick, nbc bay area. >> all right, thank you very much. the big talking point from this one is the fourth quarter decision by jim harbaugh. he says let's keep the points on the board. there was big a penalty. what should have happened? >> well, it's easy right now, jimmy. the player in me says, keep going down. maybe you score a touchdown. maybe you don't. but the conservative coach in him takes the points. that's usually what coaches do. players want to continue to go on and try to put more points on the board, maybe a touchdown. >> on the flip side of this, the cowboys had a decision to make out of fourth and five. they decide to go for it and keep the drive alive. did the niners become a little bit soft and playful? >> the cowboys made to win the game. i felt at times, the 49ers were
9:11 pm
playing not to lose. that is frustrating to me. >> for the 49ers, this is a team that could be sitting back saying we're 2-0 in the nfc west. how does this change the way this team plays football? they were aggressive in week one. in week two they became less aggressive. >> they really did. you had alex smith playing really well today. connectioning on passes. they kept trying to go back to the running game which i think was a mistake. it wasn't working. gore was getting pounded up front with that big defensive line of the dallas cowboys. >> all right. so we go from a whiild one in denver and move to it a heart breaker in buffalo. straight ahead, how the raiders went one slip away. >> reporter: we've got the resources to put together a pay proel will allow us to win. >> and later, what's the vision of the new man at the top for fn
9:14 pm
xfinity sports sunday continues to for the raiders them get a week one win on a monday night. then they have to travel to the east coast on week two to take on the buffalo bills squad that's pretty good. a tough start to the season. >> it is a tough start. but guess what, jimmy, you've got to do it. hugh jackson said it in his press conference. no excuses here. we have to execute. it doesn't matter. where we got to travel. we have to go on the road and we've got to be able to make plays and we've got to be able to score touchdowns. hit quarterbacks, sack quarterbacks, you name it. >> let's show everyone what won't in buffalo against the bills teams. second quarter. scoreless until michael bush
9:15 pm
goes in 7-out. then they continue, next possession, second and goal. darren mcfadden takes hand off and earns it. >> he's explosive. he is able to break tackles and lower that shoulder. i love that. >> 14-0, the raiders. late second quarter, jason campbell on the sneak. it is a one-yard touchdown umpl up 21-3 at the half. feeling good. >> feeling real good. they're beating a good football team. >> go to the fourth and let the mayhem begin. from one yard out, fred jackson is in. next raider possession on third and four, jason finds mcfadden. the raiders go up 28-24. the bills come right back, romo. >> i tell you what, they didn't have an answer for that passing game in the second half. they could not stop them. >> scott chandler, a six-yard catch. builds up 31-28. under four minutes to play raiders. first and ten. and jason campbell with the
9:16 pm
vertical game. rookie. rookie. comes up big. you've got to love it. >> denarius moore, very yard catch on the touchdown. he goes up and takes it away from two blue jerseys. >> in double coverage. incredible focus. awesome. >> 34-31, raiders. bills, fourth and one from the six. this guy is too wide open. david nelson touchdown. >> rolando mclean. never leave the middle like that. >> one second left. hail mary, last chance. who will get it here? >> the tie goes to the -- >> it should have been offense. >> to the defense. >> let's see it again. the bill winter 38-35 for the silver and black. jason campbell. did he all he could in this one to get the win but it wasn't enough. the breakout star was the wide .
9:17 pm
this go on the raiders. >> my players got to dig down and finish the game. this is the national football league. we pay guys and they have to make plays. we've got to find a way at the toned make plays and finish games. >> you never want to give a home team momentum. like i said, they came out, a different team. a different mindset in the second half. and like i say, you're on the roixd can't give a team that kind of life. they have the crowd behind them. they can put every one in the statement behind them and they can still make more plays. >> hugh jackson takes responsibility on this one after the ball game. you look at the defense in the second half. up 21-3 going into the half. the defense was assumed. >> they were. the second half, five possessions, five touchdowns. you'lls they needed was to stop them one time and they were not able to do it. >> no pressure on the quarterback. ryan fitzpatrick, simple pitch
9:18 pm
and catch all afternoon. >> it was. to me, you have to put pressure on the quarterback. they did that in denver them weren't able to get to fitzpatrick today. are there guys scratching their heads saying why didn't you keep nnamdi? >> i'm sure there are but nnamdi was doing it for the eagles tonight. >> you have a lead of 21-3 in this football game. you could be 2-0 starting off the season on the road. and now they have to come home to take on the jets squad. the schedule isn't getting any easier. >> no, it's not getting any easier. this is the national football league, as hugh jackson said. you have to be able to win tough game. next week against the jets, this is a good football team. the raiders are a good football team. and they are going to show up. >> we're about winning, finding the best way to win, finding the best route to win. >> less than a year from winning at all. the giants make a change at the top. how will larry taking over affect the team on the field.
9:21 pm
all right, fantasy freaks. how did your bay area best do on the fantasy front this week? if you had darren mcfadden, you had a pretty good day with two scores. if you haven't played denarius moore, you're the smartest person in fantasy football. it was a pretty hard day on the ground. move to our bank of the west play of the day. it comes from baseball. the giants' offense provided a punch. don't tell me that pitchers can't hit. matt cain going to go yard. deep to center. arnold his to center deep. one of six gp men home run on the day. five different guys spanked him. that's our bank of the west play
9:22 pm
of the day. in 2010, the giants became world series champions and all was well. behind the scenes, the giants' way wasn't moving so smoothly. on wednesday the giants announced the managing partner and ceo was out. the team has named larry as the new ceo. our henry worst spoke with the new man in charge with the giants. larry is our sunday sit-down. we're joined by the man who will be the ceo january 1st, 2012. without a managing general partner, who has the final say on the team moves? is there one person who speaks for the committee? >> well, there is one person that speaks for the giants. that would be me in terms of where the accountability goes. and i'm not doing a good job, there will be another person. every company, it won't be that
9:23 pm
different than a company in a traditional sense. a company, a ceo. a board of directors. the board of directors oversees the ceo, obviously. i'm the ceo and i'm going to work if you're referring to matters of players, the player pay roll. that will be something that will construct with brian and heavy input from our baseball people. >> bill newcome plans to diest. how will the shares be distributed? proportional to the other owners? or will the team an new owner? >> shares will be acquired by existing owners which is something that has been a hallmark of our ownership. so that we've had peter mcgowan did the same thing. approximately 30 owners, and the good news is there are, most of them, all of them, are interested in being with the giants long term. many of them are picking up bill's stakes.
9:24 pm
no new faces. it's all being assumed by current owners. >> there were some stories out there that part of the reason why mr. new come stepped down was because the executive committee wasn't happy with the way he was spending money. is there any chance the giants' pay roll will decrease next season or in the near future? >> i said at the press conference, i cannot foresee at all the giants' pay roll going down next year. we're in a mode where the franchise, i believe, is stronger than ever. considerable increase in pay roll this year. and we're about winning. we're about finding the best way to win. finding the best route to win. we have the resources to put together a pay roll that will allow us to win. >> you said that this is business as usual. but you rarely see this happen. especially after a team won the world series less than a year ago. elaborate on this. how is this business as usual? >> i don't agree that premise, actually, that we rarely happen
9:25 pm
after you win. i think there are people in life that, when there is a big accomplishment, they like to quote, go out on top. it's business as usual because i've been here in the number two role, essentially, for 19 years. and we have the organization in a great trajectory. both on the field and off the field. and it is not a turn-around. that's for sure. we're excited about the opportunity to continue winning and continuing presenting a wonderful product to our fans, and having the environment in the ballpark and our service to the community being second to none. >> as far as your approach to being ceo, how will you be different than bill newcome? >> i'm not focusing on the differences of anyone right now. i'm focusing on keeping the giants in the position that we're in. and enhancing it if, to the extent we can. we want to win the world series
9:26 pm
every year. is that a practical goal? we'll see. we want to fill the ballpark every year. we did that this year. we want to importantly be an asset to the community every year. that's what i'm focused on. bill did a tremendous job in getting us to the world series last year under his leadership. brought a lot of new philosophies and technique to the giants that we'll build upon. >> the future ceo of the san francisco giants. we thank you so much for your time. >> thanks a lot. >> that's our sunday sit-down. time for romo's rant. sometimes rant is a good thing. a busy weekend for our guy bill. boston college getting inducted boo the bc hall of fame. from bc to the nfl, a great career, a great honor, a great guy. romo, congratulations. >> i appreciate that. it was a great honor and i had four great years at boston college. and to be honored like i was
9:27 pm
this past weekend was pretty incredible. >> that's good but that's not a rant. let's do some real ranting. i know you're a little upset with the overtime. dante witner was the overtime. >> they call him safety for a reason them run play action and what does he do? he bites on the run. you've got to be kidding me. this is something that rookies do. veteran safeties do not do this. this sets up the field goal to win the game. you just can't have mistakes like that happen in overtime like that. >> part of what costs him the game. they go on the road. the offense gets 35 points. did the offense do enough for the silver and black? >> the bill scored 38 points. so guess what, the raider offense didn't score enough points, jimmy. sometimes defensively you're going to give up points. and both defenses couldn't stop the opposing offense. but this was a day where our defense, the raiders' defense, needed the offense to step up and score more points.
