9:03 pm
came together, and we knew what we all had to do. we went out there and executed it. >> alex drops the throw, and back stays in. >> down the sideline for vernon, who's got it. >> 84 of his 114 receiving yards came in the second half with this 20-yard completion setting up kendall hunter's go-ahead touchdown. >> we felt on that motion we'd get the safeties rotating down and get the coverage we wanted. to that's why we called it. >> just making plays, stepping up, doing exactly what i was told, whether it was blocking, pass protecting or just making plays downfield. you know, it was an honor to be out here to help this team win. >> the bengals quarterback andy dalton drew the attention in that game as he was 5-6 for 61 yards, but the rookie threw his first two career interception the in the fourth quarter. in the fourth quarter it was veteran quarterback alex smith who was 5-6 for 57 yards picking up a quarterback rating of 106.2 and the win.

in cincinnati, mindy bock for nbc bay area. time for the blank of the west play of the day. pga tour, 1 $11.4 million on th line. from the water, bill haas, unbelievable shot on the second layoff hole. he pars and wins on the next hole to take home the fedex cup and $11.4 million, splash. >> we look at ourselves as being best of breed academically as well as athletically. we have some of the most elite institutions academically in this country. >> how did academies play a role in expansion for the pac-12? commissioner larry scott fills us in next as xfinity sports
9:07 pm
we are now joined by pac-12 admissioner larry scott. let's start with that. ilts still the pac-12, right? why not expand now? >> we just expanded a year ago. the ink is still drying on the new logos of our new tv deals don't kick in until next football season, and that's when we'll launch our own tv network. we're thrilled where we got to with new tv agreements that put us at the top of the heap. we weren't looking to expand. thee discussions came to us. >> these discussions came to you, a few schools were bantied about. the longhorns have their own network. how much did the texas individual network play spew any discussions you had with texas? >> that wound out being central to our discussions. when the big 12 started to destabilize with texas a&m leaving we got contacted by oklahoma and texas schools and talked about the idea they could come to us.
9:08 pm
it would be a blockbuster. if the texas schools and oklahoma schools came to this conference, it would be an amazing thing and provide economic and other opportunity for our existing schools, but we've got a structure of tv networks where all schools are treated equally. we share all revenue he'll squally, and those are preconditions for any discussion of what became clear to me. the discussion was it wasn't possible to fold in the longhorn network for all the heavy new fob put in. just wasn't going to work. >> in your statement you say the pac-12 has that culture of equality. is that definition strictly division, or are there other things that encompass na? >> it's an overarching principle that's are not important in this conference. not all conferences are structured that way. we only got to that pretty recently when i started as commissioner a little over two years ago. we were not sharing tv revenue
9:09 pm
equally. the l.a. schools, usc and ucla were getting more revenue on the other skoolding being in the second largest media group in this country. i wanted to change that and get all schools to pool all their media rights and agree to share everything equally. we were successful in achieving that. i think that's the underpinning of a successful conference. >> is it safe tuesday texas won't budge? that's an essential item to texas? >> we fully explored that. that's a nonstarter for now. >> you mentioned oklahoma, oklahoma and oklahoma state. the pac-12 has a very high academic standard. is there concern among the pac-12 conference pred presidents that the oklahoma schools doentd meet the standard? >> our conference is unique in that we look at ourselves as being best of breed academically as well as athletically. we have some of the most elite institutions academically in this country, and that brand is
9:10 pm
really important. so it factors into all the discussions. i wouldn't say there was any one issue that factors into this decision, but we really didn't even get to it because of the issues we talked about before, vis a vis the long horng network. >> why is this good for college sports? >> people can debate whether further consolidation is good or not. what i see is uf got three conferences that are very stable in very strong positions. they're magnets for some of these other schools that are in situations that are unstable. so i think that's where we're at at the moment. i think you'll see other movement in other parts of the country with conferences realigning but i don't think you'll see anything coming from the pac-12. >> in the horizon you don't have
9:11 pm
a long-term view and short-term view that says super conference is essential to our survival. >> absolutely not. we signed 12-year agreements with espn to tox that take us to being the richest conference in terms of tv agreements. we have the largest contracts in college sports and we're being to launch a series of seven fv networks. for the next 12 years we're the leader of the class if i can say and we're happy for the world to stay as it is. >> keep it right here. our sunday sit-down with larry scott continues. find out why the olympics will play a big part in the future of
9:13 pm
9:14 pm
two players stand out on sunday. run-d.m.c. goes for two scores a 1-71. vernon davis had 114 yards in a 49er win. if we use the word "expansion" a lot of people think it's more teams. i want to talk about expansion in the pac-12 and spreading your te tentacles. how long before they're in asia, japan and china? >> that's something we'd like to make happen. we have a vision for the conference as being the gateway to the pacific rim. our conference also touches canada and mexico in the south. some of the brands of our schools are incredibly wrong. this is where athletics help the missions of the university. our chancellors are keen to promote our schools overseas from a development standpoint, the joint research and faculty exchange and the athletic brands drive a lot of awareness. now that this expansion stuff is
9:15 pm
behind us, as we're working to launch or networks and all that, i hope to turn my attempt to swernlts development. >> time line on that? >> in the next five years you see a lot more activities, a lot more competitions taking place overseas. once we get the tv networks up and running, we'll have media content we can expose overseas. i'd say since that time frame there's not immediate short-term. >> you've been open in the fact you think olympic sports are important to the pac-12. if the pac-12 were a nation at the olympics, you would be in the top five in total medal count. >> it is astounding. >> what is your goal for growth in the olympic sports? >> it's a gem of this conference that's been undervalues, so we have won our conference wins more ncaa titles than any other by far. yet some of our schools like ucla, usc, cal, stanford are
9:16 pm
clearly in a class of their own in terms of their olympic sports prowess. as someone that's not a football guy, i come from tennis. that was my sport as a student eighth le athlete and spent most of my career of promoting it as low pressure sport. i want to give them unprecedented exposure and really showcasing. the way we do that is through our tv networks. we'll have 500 to low pressure sports events on the air for the first time annually. >> that will help get these student looets recognition they deserve. it will allow for coaches to recruit more nationally than in the west coast. the kids want to be seen. if we have a tv network exposing the olympic sports, you have a serious advantage. >> the pac-12 has its own network that will begin. the crux is it's olympic scores, correct? >> espn and fox have 34 football
9:17 pm
games and about 35 football games for their tv network. that will leave over 100 basketball games on our network. but the bulk of the programming, 500 or 600 event spread across the networks will be olympic sports and even nonsports where we have an amazing opportunity to proceed approximate moat the school brands as well. >> a recent sports survey of the sports experts they were polled and said which commissioners were the best many sports? over all in the professional thesdz david stern was their answer. if they open it up, larry scott is killing it right now. that came from a professor at the university of pennsylvania? >> hard var. >> that was a big complement. the question for you is, what's your next challenge. >> we have plenty of challenges here. one of the exciting things i lived about leaving pro tennis and coming to the pac-10, i saw this huge opportunity working with the schools to gree what
9:18 pm
they're doing. i couldn't be more r motivated about what we're doing, and i see a lot of chael electrics again. >> thank you very much for joining us. we appreciate it. good luck in your future. >> my pleasure. so some big decisions comes from the pac-12 commissioner in the very near future. that will do it for a very successful day in bay area football. both the raiders and 49ers clock in at 2-1 to start the season. we'll be back next weekh
