a show down o. protesters are staying right where they are. the demonstrators have been preparing to face possible evex after the owner demanded the site be importaemptied so it co cleaned. okay pi wall street feared it was all a pretext, part of a plan to permanently end their protest. many felt the stage had been set for major confrontation this morning. within the last hour, new york's deputy mayor announced the owners of the park have postponed the cleaning of the park and for the time being have with drawn their request for assistance to empty it.

and america's unemployment situation is the key issue behind growing national protests. today it will be on president obama's agenda as he hits the road to promote his plan for getting americans back to work. for more on that, we go to nbc's tracie potts in washington for us. good morning. >> reporter: hi, lynn. good morning. he is hitting the road headed to michigan to take a look at factories where cars are made here in the united states that were designed in south korea. it is the type of arrangement they hope will happen more. it was one of three that was passed by congress. one of the things that president obama discussed yesterday. they also talked a bit about the president's jobs plan, which the senate has rejected. boehner said there are some elements of the plan that they may still consider like infrastructure money, but he has got to do it in a fiscally responsible way. republicans have their own jobs plan that they are introducing which they say will create 5 million more jobs, easying restrictions on business and an

overhaul of the tax code. >> traci, thanks so much. meanwhile republicans say they should be working on job creation. this criticism comes following house approval last night of a bill that would make it illegal for federal funds to go to health care plans to provide abortion services. the legislation passed mainly along a party line vote and has no chance of being brought before the democrat-led senate. now here is a look at some other stories. a violent attack inside a chicago high school was captured on criminal phone. the video shows one teen struggling to defend herself against two sisters inside a biology class. a teacher tried to intervene but was unable to stop the fight. the 14-year-old victim suffered

a concussion and other injuries. her 17 and 18-year-old attackers were suspended from school and arrested. a base jumper's problems with his parachute led to a daring rescue in california. the parachute got caught on a tree, leaving the jumper dangling 60 feet above the ground. a rescuer was lowered from the helicopter to free the man who was later arrested for jumping without a permit. finally, the last person in the world you'd expect to see waiting in line for the new iphone would be apple co-founder

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. nbc news has learned elite iranian military unit behind the alleged plot to assassinate the saudi arabia ambassador in u.s. is involved in drug smuggling. the suspect in the case told an undercover informant his iranian handlers could arrange for shipments of opium. a second man has been convicted of murdering a woman and her two daughters in a gruesome home invasion. prosecutors in the trial of michael jackson's doctor have called their final witness. a sleep expert who says it was inconceivable for dr. murray to use propofol to treat insomnia. sources tell nbc news the defense will argue jackson had taken an antianxiety medication hours before the death and never told dr. murray. they will argue that medication

is what killed him. a highway crash in colorado involved a van and cattle trailer that left the van's driver and five school children from a group home dead. seven other children were hospitalized. in california more than 1500 people gathered for a candle light vigil last night to honor those gunned down. seattle's self-proclaimed super hero has, for now, escaped charges. he dressed as his super hero alter ego as he appeared in court in a seattle courtroom thursday to face assault charges for allegedly pepper spraying people on the dance floor. he claims he had been braeaking up a fight. the city attorney says no charges will be filed but an investigation is still ongoing. and a fighter jet did a nose dive before crashing into a field at an air show in central china.

in hong kong the hang seng dropped 256. wall street's red hot rally ended thursday as once again banking and overseas issues prompted investors to retreat. banks dragged stocks lower after jpmorgan chase, the first bank to report earnings and widely considered the nation's strongest, reported an investment banking slowdown hurt results. also disappointing investors, china's trade surplus narrowed for a second month. more evidence of slowing. that china data also sent oil tumbling. data here showed unemployment changed little last week. and august trade deficit narrowed slightly indicating some economic improvement. afternoon tech rally kept the nasdaq in the black. yahoo! rose on sales speculation vertex rose 5%. research in motion fell in the wake of blackberry's prolonged worldwide service problems.

good morning and welcome back to "early today." in sports, just like baseball's regular season, this year's playoffs show every indication they may go down to the wire. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headline. >> good morning. every team has a thing. something they rally around that's uniquely theirs. for the brewers it's beast mode from the movie monday centers inc. they are tallied to tie the alcs. alex sanchez from a monster to a wolf. the randy wolf allowed two early home runs and settled down for what he called the biggest win of his career. struck out six over seven innings. tied 2-2, ryan braun drove in the eventual tying run. now to detroit, verlander of the tigers lived to play another day. the cy young favorite didn't have his best stuff but got out of a number of jams and deuced a double play.

that was big because the tigers blew it open. cabrera a shot off third and down the line. detroit took the lead thanks to a bit of good luck. nothing lucky about the way delmon young played. he was dialed in. capped off a four-run inning with second homer of the game. tigers beat the rangers 7-5. game six is tomorrow. hockey, penguins got good news. crosby has been cleared for contact. the next step is for him to ditch the practice jersey and play in an actual game. pittsburgh could have used him against. washington. caps remain unbeaten with a 3-2 win. and a pair of touchdowns. trojans are 5-1 with a 30-9 win. finally with no end in sight to the nba lockout, lebron james tweeted this week he would love to give the nfl a try. of course that's not going happen. seahawk coach pete carroll ran with it. he tweeted a picture of a uniform with lebron's name. he asked if you know what the
