a little warm for sleeping in the city in south bay too. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist, rob mayeda, who has a look at your forecast. good saturday morning. interesting weather as we kick off the weekend. summerlike temperatures last few days. now, we are watching high-level clouds going on by. two areas of upper low pressure just offshore that will be spilling clouds our way as we head towards the afternoons. today, starting off with the 50s and 60s for the morning. upper 70s inland. high temperatures running cooler. mid-80s thanks to a stronger sea breeze. the coast and peninsula, 60s and 70s. the item to watch, variable clouds and a chance of scattered showers. we will talk more about that coming up later on. we begin with military news this morning. first, the father and then the son. in yemen, reports that a u.s. missile strike killed a 21-year-old son of on war al

alacki was killed. his son, abdul romanal awacki they say was killed. five of his family, they say, were among the seven people killed in the missile attacks. president obama says the september 30th of on wwas a maj plus. he is serving a life sentence for attempting to blow up new york city landmarks, including the world trade center in 1993. an islamic leader wrote that the son was killed but didn't say when. at least three suspected militants are dead after a drone attack in the northwestern part of pakistan. pakistani intelligence leaders say, drones fired on u.s.

missiles and his a compound killing the militants. they say they were fighters of a local militant commander accused of working with the taliban to direct cross border attacks. here at home, the people of oakland get face time with the city leaders following the surprise resignation of the police chief. the safety summit is planned as the police forces influx and are dealing with an already violent year. >> reporter: a double shooting in oakland in broad daylight leaves one man dead and another fighting for his life with 84 homicides so far this year compared to 62 at this time last year, the resignation of police chief anthony bats makes people nervous. >> chief bats leaving, oh, my god, again. so people kind of feel that it is a step back. >> reporter: carl chan is the president of oakland's chinatown president council.

he says violent crime and uncertainty about the leadership is bad for business. >> it is also hurting a lot of small businesses. we talk to many, many customers. people, they normally would like to come to oakland. we ask them, why you not here. they saying, there are problems in oakland. >> reporter: the chief said he was accountable but did not have full control. >> it is the politicians that set the priority in the city, not the police chief. >> pete hurley is past president of the california police chief association. he says city hall took bat's power cutting the budget and rejecting gang injunctions and curfews. whoever is selected to replace him must be prepared to fight crime and city hall. you have to have a thick skin and an understanding of the political atmosphere. they are holding a safety summit asking people to share strategies about making

neighborhoods safer. chan hopes to deliver a message. >> i think we are using the handcuffs incorrectly. >> jean elle, "today in the bay." police are looking for alleged grope pers who may be working together. two women were groped between 6:00 and 9:00 wednesday night, one near clark hall and the other near uchita hall. the suspects are hispanic males around 19 years old with spiky hair. until police can find them, the university is reminding students to buddy up or call for help. >> we offer an evening escort service by calling our police department. we are able to walk or drive any student that needs help to their destination. we ask all our students to take advantage of that service. >> campus police report that even with those incidents, the university is consistently low in terms of crime for a school

its size. this morning, we get a unique chance to see a rescue from the perspective of the firefighter who pulled two women from their burning home. the two elderly women were trapped as fire ripped through their home in concord. george shows us the rescue captured by the camera on top of the firefighters helmet. >> this traumatic video shows how two contra costa firefighters saved two women. the thick, black smoke made it almost impossible to see. an elderly woman and her care taker were in the back bedroom. firefighter, nick long, led the care taker to safety. firefighter, chris long go had a more difficult task. she couldn't walk on her own. i could hear her screaming help. she had pulled the sheets from her bed up over her face and was shielding her face and using the sheets as a filter for the

smoke. i reached down and kind of scooped her up. i grabbed her and the adrenaline was taking over. my thought was like, grab her and let's get out of here as quickly as possible. >> reporter: in seconds rs the women are led to safety as the fire continued to devour the home. >> i would say 90 seconds to two minutes they had left before that roof came in. conditions would have changed dramatically. >> i don't know how much longer the women could have remained conscious breathing that smoke. i am surprised they remained conscious breathing that smoke. >> reporter: firefighters know how precious time is in attempting to save lives. every second counts. that's why with the county talking about cutting funds for fire service, there is concerns a successful rescue like this one could be hard to do. >> vital seconds and vital minutes are going to make all the difference. hopefully, with he don't get to the point where we have to start losing lives to start saving lives. for at least this night, these firefighters know they are heroes and making a difference.

the california department of justice. undercover agents bought drugs and guns, stolen property and cars from alleged gang members and known criminals. officers arrested suspects in alame da, santa claire ya, san ben knee toe and santa cruz county. >> there will be a certain impact in terms of public safety in this region. >> this is without question the largest investigation of this type, largest number of defendants that i have ever seen. >> the criminals were arrested on state and federal charges and many have ties to mexican drug car tells. authorities also seized nearly 90 stolen cars, around 60 guns and large amounts of drugs. those occupy protests will continue here in the bay area today. coming up at 3:00, occupy san francisco ralliers will gather and march from the 100 block of market street. so far, the protests have been largely peaceful but maintaining a police presence is costing the

city a chunk of change. in san francisco alone, the police tab is now at $70,000. in new york, where it was started, the city has spent more than $2 million to keep the sometimes raucous crowds at bay. governor jerry brown has officially declared this sunday steve jobs day in california. also, tomorrow, apple will hold an invitation only memorial at stanford university for some of silicon valley's biggest names and those closest to steve jobs. another memorial is planned for a apple employees. they lined up to get their hands on jobs' most recent creation, the i-phone 4 apps. apple co-founder, steve wozniak hopes the company will continue

you would think that much cooler but it was warm overnight. not just in san francisco and oakland but in the south bay as well. rob mayeda says cooler temperatures should happen sometime this weekend. now, let's check in with rob mayeda, who has a full look at the forecast. good morning, once again. we are going to start off with what's flying in the skies not related to the chance of showers. pollen, or in this case, mold spores, we had rain earlier in the week. unfortunately, that mold spore count has gone up. it may be due to that as opposed to the free pollen that has dropped off for cedar and elm to kick off the weekend. kind of a nice sign of clouds going by yesterday evening. you could see the sunset over san francisco friday evening. notice the mid-level clouds you are seeing approaching from the south this morning. as we head through the afternoon, there could be enough lift to some of this moisture to kick off isolated showers near the coastal range. i do think it is going to be sunday as some of the most

starts to move toward the north bay hill tops where we may see a chance of showers or maybe even some isolated thunder way off to the north up towards mendocino county. the weekend changes for everybody. it will be gradually cooler temperatures. as the moisture continues to come up during the day, today we will continue to see those partly cloudy skies, slight risk of showers around the coastal range and sunday, as more of the moisture interacts with a little funnel system going by to the north. that could add extra lift to that moisture and possible ring out some showers. the time frame would be late saturday night into maybe 11:00 sunday morning for this to take place mainly north of napa county and sonoma county. as the system goes on by, the temperatures will be warming as we head to the start of the workweek. mid-80s inland, close to 80 in san jose. notice the temperatures around the coast. san francisco, we will likely hit the temperatures in the mid-70s as early as 11:00 in the morning. as the sea breeze starts to turn

stron stronger, we will see the temperatures starting to cool down. the time frame to watch, later on today into sunday morning, we will see a slight chance of showers. then, things turn dry, breezy, and warmer again on monday and a stronger sea breeze starts to cool things down as we approach the middle part of the week. >> mild here but take a look at this. a tornado in northern virginia rolled right across a major freeway right at the height of rush-hour. the woman who shot this video with her cell phone said it only took a few minutes for that tornado to form. thursday night's storm wiped out trees, knocked out power and flooded the roadways and terrified plenty of people. tactical teams from around the world are being put to the test during the grueling urban shield competition here in the bay area this weekend. a live look at 1 of 31 scenarios that are playing out. this one at oakland international airport. teams are at the old united hangar reenacting an assault on

an airplane, the largest security training exercise in the world. 31 teams of 8 checked into the headquarters in dublin. one team traveled from jordan to take part. >> most of our days, we have got a situation. so i think we come here with a good experience, maybe to exchange knowledge with our colleagues here and the competition. this competition, all of us would -- >> the competition runs for 48 straight hours. it started at 6:00 this morning and monday morning, all of the teams will deal continuously with scenarios that require special training, equipment and intense coordination. if your kids are getting xloes close to those college years, you might want to stop by uc berkley. they are hosting college information day. 60 public and private colleges and universities will help you or your kid apply to get in, prepare for college entrance exams and financial aide

applications. the college information day will be at uc berkley's wheeler hall auditorium this morning at 8:30. inquiring minds want to know. if you ever wondered what happens to the water after it disappears down the toilet, you can see it for yourself today at one of the bay area's newest sewage treatment plants. they will open the stores to the oakley sewage treatment plant which just went on line this summer. every day, they process about 2.5 million gallons of water that people flush away. it serves the people in oakley, bethel island and eastern contra costa county. that facility is located at 450 walnut meadows drive. i went to the one in san jose. very interesting. >> the canine cops that fearlessly chase after cops could use a little help. they are trying to get them bullet proof vests.

just us. i want all of us to see it that way. an or gone bus driver is being disciplined for telling a young mother to get off the bus because her baby was crying. the driver warned the woman to quiet the baby. when that didn't happen, she was forced to get off the bus. what happened after that was perhaps more interesting as "today in the bay's" reggie akey explains from portland. >> reporter: this shows a bus driver walking to the back of the bus to this woman and her crying 2-year-old daughter, jessica. >> she said, do you have something, a toy or some keys or something for her? >> reporter: english is not magdalena's first language. she said she tried to explain, there was nothing she could do.

her daughter was tired. >> the driver told her she couldn't keep driving with ul athe crying. as you will see in the video, magdalena leaves. >> i didn't have a choice because i didn't know what to do to calm her. >> reporter: that's how the night ended for magdale in. a the controversy was just leaving. minutes later, in protest, all the other passengers left the bus. after investigating, trimet says the driver made a mistake. >> it is not the type of thing we like to see occur. it doesn't happen very often. we always take steps to say, how can we make sure this doesn't happen again. >> for this mom, it is not enough. >> reporter: what do you think is fair? >> an apology. >> reporter: trimet apologized to her. she says, she won't be happy until the driver says sorry. >> reporter: do you think she should have been fired?

claims this soldier took his meal home. while eating the hamburger, he bit into the needle piercing his to tongue and making him bleed. he had to be hospitalized after another needle was found in his small intestine. vice president, clint eastwood, former eight to the 41st president says it could have been according to george h.w. bush, that campaign chairman and sec of state, james baker. eastwood was seriously considered to be bush's running mate in 1988. at the time, clint eastwood was the maker of carmel. bush said he thought the actor turned politician could help him beat michael dukakis. eastwood said he was surprised to hear he was even considered. >> i didn't know anything about it. tho though, they missed a great opportunity. when i was mayor of carmel,

good morning to you. taking our cameras over the city. you can see lots of fog there in the distance. we are expecting cooler temperatures today, depending on who you are, you might be saying thank goodness, because it was warm yesterday. thanks so much for joining us on this saturday morning. i'm kris sanchez. let's see our forecast with rob mayeda. good saturday morning to you. interesting weather as we kick off the weekend. we had summer like temperatures the last few days. now, high-level clouds going on by two areas of upper low pressure just offshore that will be spilling some clouds our way as we head towards the afternoon. today, starting off in the 50s and 60s for the morning. as we head towards lunchtime, upper 70s inland.

>> reporter: despite that assessment, santa clara county d.a. says he will not find criminal charges in the case. >> was there a crime? we don't know. if there was a crime, do we know who did it? we don't know. can we prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt at a jury trial? no. >> reporter: rosen says he also based his decision on the outcome of the recent civil trial. jurors in that case unanimously found the two defendants not liable on the sexual assault charges. he also says the fact alcohol was involved played a role in the decision not to prosecute. >> sexual assault cases are very difficult to prove. sexual assault cases involving highly intoxicated people are extremely difficult to prove. by their very nature, thighs types of cases involve witnesses whose memories and perceptions are questionable because they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. >> in response to the decision, the alleged victim issued this

statement saying, i am very disappointed in our justice system. i believing only pray that victims find strength in my journey. i didn't hide. i told my story. i am not embarrassed. i did all i could to help the truth come out. i now will move on. >> we do believe a sexual assault occurred in that bedroom. >> leanndra with the ywca center is disappointed they will not be prosecuted. she is concerned about the message that sends to future rape victims. >> we have a lot of concerns as a result of this case being so publicized. they won't come forward as to what happened to them or to report. >> reporter: in san jose, marianne favro. san francisco police are asking for help in finding 39-year-old mark marvin, who was last seen near his home more than a week ago. that was october 6th. marvin is 39 years old, 5'7",

weighing about 135 pounds. his truck was found in the baker beach parking lot on sunday, october 9th. if you know anything about him, you should call san francisco police. first, it was wall street and then the rest of the nation and now "occupy wall street" has gone global. the momentum of that so-called occupied protest continues to spread. today, san francisco braces for yet another protest. this time, a rally in march beginning in the 100 block of market street at 3:00 this afternoon. protests like the one planned for today, they are costing the city a big chunk of change. frae san francisco police say $70,000 has been spent to keep the peace. just a drop in the bucket compared to what new york city has spent. there, they have spent more than $2 million to keep the sometimes raucous crowds at bay.

a cold case stemming back to 2007 is closer to being solved this morning. richard noguera was arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of sean natana and his eight-month-old son. earlier this week, donald ortez of oakland was also arrested. both suspects once lived together in sacramento around the time of the shootings. no further details have been released about how they are connected to the crimes. as we first told you at the top of the hour, the 21-year-old son of anwar al awlaki. he was the u.s. born cleric who became a powerful al qaeda recruiter before he was killed. these are pictures of him. his son, abdul romano al awlaki

was killed with others. earlier tribal elders claimed that five of al awlaki's family members were killed in the september 30th strike. president obama says it was a major blow to alc qaeda around the world. son of this egypt sean sheikh has also been killed by a u.s. missile strike. an islamic group wrote on their missile strike that ahmed abdel ramen has been killed. the senior abdel ramen known was the blind sheikh was the spiritual leader of the ga ma. one of the men convicted of the world trade center bombing 18 years ago. at least three suspected militants have been killed in a drone attack. pakistani officials say that a

drone fired u.s. missiles and hit a compound near the afghan border killing at least three militants there. those killed were the fighters of a local militant commander who was accused of working with the taliban and al qaeda to direct cross-border attacks on american soldiers. the taliban is claiming responsibility for an attack on an american military base in afghanistan this morning. afghan police say that three gunmen and one militant driving a vehicle packed with explosives assaulted the gate of the district just before dawn this morning. one of the attackers launched a grenade that hit a security attacker. all four attackers were killed and two security guards were wounded. >> the u.s. is sending 100 troops to central africa to support a year's long fight against a gorilla group accused of horrific atrocities. they will only fight if they have to defend themselves. the obama administration says they are sent to african to

the councilman. >> reporter: endorsed by some of the biggest names, san jose city councilman osh cholera was riding a hot streak after his stork victory as the city's first-ever indian council member. he made headlines from san jose to new delhi. >> it is still surprising. sometimes i wake up in the morning and leave my home and i am driving in the same neighborhood i used to ride my bike in when i was a kid. he is confronted with something that happens to many, scandal and friction. it was well-documented in the wee hours of may 7th, not far from the 18th floor office at city hall, the georgetown educated lower was on the wrong side of the law. dui landed the 39-year-old in jail and back in the headlines. i feel it is important to be honest and come out and let people know that i made a

mistake. damage control was swift, less than 24 hours after his release, he invited reporters to his house. some said it was more of a slick p.r. movement. >> for one movement to diminish that, i understand people may see that as far as you see it as something against me. i have no one else to blame. >> if this is it, if this is his only flaw in public service, it would not harm him, especially as the years go on. if there are others that follow, then the dui we saw a few months ago would be a big canary in the mind so to speak. >> anyone that goes through this learns lessons and they are a daily lesson. those consequences are with you. frankly, they will be with me forever. >> from the scandal to the friction, this is the part of the story that hasn't been in the headlines. >> there is a lot tension in city hall. everyone is aware of where i stand on these issues, because i'm very clear. i don't hide my opinion on them.

we are going to start off what's flying in the skies, not related to the chance of showers. pollen, mold spores, we had rain earlier in the week. that mold spore count has gone up. if you suffer from allergies, it may be due to that as opposed to

tree pollen, like elm. a nice sign of clouds going by yesterday evening. you can see the sun set. notice the mid-level clouds going on by. the same are seen approaching from the south this morning. as we head through the afternoon, there could be enough lift for some of this moisture to kick off some isolated showers near the coastal range. i do think it is going to be sunday as some of the moisture from it this cut-off low stretches to move toward the hilltops where we may see a chance of showers or thunder way off to the north up towards mendocino county. the weekend changes. there will be gradually cooler temperatures. today, we will continue to see those partly cloudy skies, slight risk of showers around the coastal range. sunday, as more of that moisture interacts with a little fran tall system going by to the north, that could add extra lift and possibly ring out some showers. time frame would be late saturday night into 11:00 sunday morning for this to take place.
