firefighters who rescued them from their burning apartment. fire started around 1:15 this morning on an apartment complex. san jose fire said it started in an apartment on the second floor. firefighters had to use a ladder truck to reach one person who was stranded on a balcony. two people are injured. one of them went to the hospital. we do also know that a firefighter suffered minor burns to the face. more than 50 people are now out of their homes because of this fire. the red cross is assisting them this morning. also in san jose overnight, a fight turned into the city's 37th homicide investigation of this year. san jose police got a call about a fight on virginia street and union street around 1:30 this morning. police were led to a victim on the sidewalk at virginia and vine avenue. that victim had been stabbed, and doctors at valley medical centering not save him. police are not releasing suspect information right now. two people are expected to

survive after two shootings in burlingame. this one happened just before 2:00 this morning in a business complex parking lot near airport boulevard. police are still investigating what led to this shooting. and interstate 580 is finally open again after a deadly and possibly intentional crash shut it down and sent police on a mile-long search for evidence. this happened on 580 in san leandro around a 4:00 yesterday afternoon. police say 31-year-old eddie hall from oakland, the driver of an east bay paratransit van, hit a motorcyclist dragged the rider and bike for more than a mile. >> the victim was ejected off the motorcycle, went underneath the van, and then the van proceeded with the motorcycle to a further spot down the freeway. >> investigators say hall finally pulled over near the 150th avenue exit then tried to get away. the rider was with a group of hells angels. investigators think he was also a member. he died at the hospital. an east bay paratransit

supervisor says the van is equipped with a camera that should reveal what happened before, during, and after the accident. the search for the hells angel biker accused of killing a fellow biker at a funeral took san jose's s.w.a.t. on a road trip. san jose police went to stockton where s.w.a.t. officers surrounded a home where they hoped they would find the suspect. monte francis there was during the standoff. >> reporter: back to square one. that's how police described what happened in this stockton neighborhood. they say steve ruiz is still at large and should be considered armed and dangerous. these broken windows are signs of a 13-hour ordeal in stockton during which s.w.a.t. officers surrounded a house, believing that murder suspect steve ruiz was inside. earlier in the day, neighbors gathered at the edge of the crime tape in this usually quiet neighborhood to watch at s.w.a.t. officers wearing gas masks with guns drawn surrounded the home.

>> it's scary. scary because you don't think things would be happening this way out here. people coming all the way down here from the bay area. >> it's scary. we live in a nice, quiet neighborhood on. our children were scared. they're literally in the bedroom. >> reporter: steve ruiz is wanted in connection with the slaying of a fellow member of the hells angels who was gunned down at the funeral of a local leader of the motorcycle club in san jose one week ago. police found ruiz's motorcycle at the funeral. they believe he's injured with two black eyes and could be with his girlfriend. police say had had ruiz been inside the house, there's no way he could have escaped, so they believe he was never there. also, investigators have not said what led them here in the first place. in stockton, monte francis. and some business news now. google could be financing a deal

for another company to buy yahoo!. "the wall street journal" reports that google execs have talked with at least two private equity firms about helping to finance the deal. the paper says google has engaged in preliminary discussions but nothing has formalized. google might not pursue the deal after all. protesters are still occupying oakland two days after the city ordered them to leave. yesterday, about 700 people marched from where about 100 tents are set up to the lake. the protesters say they won't pull up their stakes any time soon. national polls suggest that support for the movement is on the rise, but still only 33% of people support the demonstrations. chicago police arrested more than 100 people in that city's occupy camp overnight. police moved in and gave the order to clear at about 3:00 in the morning. protesters were noisy but peaceful. there was a similar raid in australia where police arrested 40 people. protesters started camping out

in dramatic fashion, supporters of gun rights protested a new state law in san leandro yesterday. dozens of people gathered yesterday near bay fair mall strapped with rifles and shotguns. they want a pending state law banning the open carry of pistols repealed. the new law takes effect january 1st but does not apply to shotguns and rifles. gun owners upset with the law say they plan to start packing heat in public as often as they can. >> this is not something we wanted to do, you mow. i've been open carrying for years now. i've never carried a long gun until now. >> i think that guns breed

violence. i think that the more guns there are, the more likelihood that people are going to be killed. whether it's a killed fooling around with his dad's gun or whether they're people on the street. >> those charged with violating the law once it goes into effect could face up to a year in prison. people who saw the demonstrations were mixed in their reaction. today shark hunters in australia are trying to catch the shark that killed an american. the shark attacked a texas man yesterday. it is the third recent fatal shark attack off australia's southwest coast. the hunters put hooks into the waters for about six hours but pulled them after worrying that it might attract more sharks. scientists are trying to figure out how and where a german satellite returned to earth overnight. so far, no evidence this morning that any parts of the satellite crashed on the earth's surface. scientists know it entered the

earth's atmosphere earlier today, but they say that's about all they know right now. president obama is trying to shift the talk to the challenge of rebuilding the economy and creating jobs, but republicans are also weighing in on the president's policies both foreign and domestic. kristen welker has a look at the latest from washington. >> reporter: president obama hailed this week's foreign policy development in his weekly web address. >> this week we had two powerful reminders of how we've renewed american leadership in the world. >> reporter: but the republican candidates are not letting him take a victory lap. in new hampshire today, mitt romney blasted the administration's decision to withdraw all troops instead of leaving a few thousand in country to aid the transition process. >> they either failed to do it by virtue of ineptitude or decided it wasn't that important politically or otherwise. >> reporter: political analysts

were also injured, including a 14-year-old. some silicone valley business news this morning. google could be financing a deal for another company to buy yahoo!. "the wall street journal" reports that google executives have talked with at least two private equity firms to help finance a deal. nothing is formalized, and google might not pursue the deal at all. a new section of a trail that should encircle the bay area is open this morning. this is what the bay area ridge trail should look like when it's done. yesterday, officials dedicated a 5.3 mile stretch in san jose. 337 miles of the trail are now open with 220 miles to go. planning for this trail started nearly 25 years ago. much more ahead on "today in the bay." still to come, san francisco's mayor is embroiled in more controversy. we'll show you why. and mcdonald's is one of the few

ballots for voters. it was run by many of the same people who worked on the ed run campaign. one witness says she saw the workers marking the ballots themselves. another says the workers would put a stencil over ballot so the voter could only mark the spot for lee. lee's campaign quickly announced it had nothing to do with that group, but the head of the city's election department was referred to the city. speak of elections, in tuniaia, polls are open this morning. this is the first election since the people overthrew their president of 23 years. people will elect an assembly that will appoint a new government and draft a new constitution. louisiana governor will keep his job for another four years. he won re-election by a large

margin yesterday getting 70% of the vote. the 40-year-old picked up $15 million in campaign cash from around the nation and attracted democratic challengers. none of them who had statewide name recognition or fund raising power. afghan president hah mid karzai says his country would support pakistan in a military conflict between pakistan and the u.s. karzai made those comments to a pakistani television channel yesterday. he says if the u.s. ever attacked pakistan, afghanistan would be there to help. such a situation does seem unlikely. washington has been working hard to ease tensions with pakistan. the federal government is now taking action on so-called bath salts. not the kind you use to soak in a tub, but rather a designer drug gaining popularity among teens and young adults. here's more. >> reporter: a late-night visit from granite city, illinois,

police brought a nightmare home for nancy and her daughter amanda. >> they asked me if i could come down to gateway regional hospital to see if it was my brother to identify him. >> reporter: 26-year-old jeffrey informs a coma, hospitalized after being found combative and psychotic on a neighborhood street. he would die three days later, devastating his family. the cause, bath salts. a methamphetamine derivative that was widely available to anyone, including children. but don't let the name fool you. these aren't actually bath salts, but a powerful designer drug that can cause hallucinations, psychotic breaks, and suicide. >> young adults are not really fully aware of the dangers when they take these drugs and what the potential side effects both short term and long term are. >> reporter: the effect of the drug on users may not end on one night's high. >> some of them were sent to psychiatric facilities. some were sent to long-term care

lynn is in the hospital this morning. the 76-year-old is said to be suffering from the beginning stages of pneumonia. that's according to her website. she cancelled a performance at a kentucky theater last night. she was inducted into the country music hall of fame in 1988 and is probably best known for her hit song "coal miner's daughter." . the near week long search for a red-tailed hawk in san francisco shot in the head with a nail gone is over this morning. this video shot by an nbc bay area viewer shows the hawk being captured by the volunteer group wild rescue yesterday afternoon in golden gate park. the group used a baited trap to catch the bird instead of nets. they were afraid the nail might get tangled and cause the hawk more harm than good. the wildlife center of silicone valley is now treating that hawk. also this morning, another animal story. penguin story for you. some penguins are suffering the

ill effects of an oil spill until folks decided to start knitting sweaters to keep them safe. >> reporter: these little blue penguins have been rescued following an oil spill off the coast of new zealand two weeks ago. hundreds of birds have been scrubbed in hot water to remove the oil, but they've also had something unusual to help them pull through, hand-knitted sweaters like these lovingly made by knitters from around the world. they stopped the birds from preening their feathers. >> it actually does work. the big problem for any sea bird is that when they start to preen, they ingest the oil, which is toxic. >> reporter: scientists are searching new zealand's beaches for birds at risk. >> he's getting oil under his flippers and all over. he's got some here. it's kind of like hypothermia. >> reporter: an army of knitters has responded to a call for

san jose fire says it started on the second story apartment indian spreand spread to the first. we know two people are injured. also, one firefighter was also injured. minor burns to the face. more than 50 people a now out of their homes, and the red cross is assisting this morning. also in san jose overnight, a fight turned into the city's 37th homicide investigation of the year. san jose police say they got a call about a fight on virginia street near union street around 1:30 this morning. they arrived at the scene and were led to the victim on the sidewalk at virginia and vine avenue. he was stabbed and was pronounced dead at the hospital. police are not releasing suspect information. and interstate 580 is once again open after a deadly and intentional crash shut it down and sent police on a mile-long search for evidence. this one happened on 580 in san leandro around 4:00 yesterday afternoon where police say

31-year-old eddie hall from oakland, the driver of an east bay paratransit van, hit a motorcycli motorcyclist and dragged the rider and his bike for more than a mile. >> the victim was ejected from the motorcycle, went underneath the van, and then the van proceeded with the motorcycle to a further spot down the freeway. >> investigators say hall pulled over near the 150th avenue exit and then tried to get away. the rider was with a group of hells angels riders. investigators think he was also a member. he died at hospital. we want to thank you so much for joining us on this sunday morning. thank you for joining us, christina. nice to have company on the weekends. no news tonight at 5:00 and 6:00 because it is football night in america. that's what we'll be doing instead. next news, 11:00 tonight. have a great day. de
