i'm bob redell live in san francisco where a much anticipated police raid on occupy sf protester had yet to materialize. >> in oakland, outrage over an injured veteran in the occupy protest. plus, despite shouts and pleas from parents, five oakland schools will close at the end of the year. we'll hear what students had to say. a live look outside at the bay bridge this morning. it's thursday, october 27th. this is "today in the bay." well, good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. let's get the forecast with christina loren. good morning. >> good morning to you. it is a cold start in the north bay.

died down because of the raid that a lot of people were anticipating has yet to happen. there's still quite a crowd out here. maybe three or four protesters. i think maybe there's a sense that this raid is not going to happen. but it certainly seems like it did in the morning while he was on treasure island. he estimated a couple of hundred police officers congregating there. and then around 2:20 they fwoorded buses, got in their vehicles, crossed the bay bridge, came into san francisco. their location is unknown. the san francisco supervisors

were out here, including the president david schu. they came out here with solidarity with the occupy sf protesters. and to media a resolution that would not involve a crackdown. in the words of david chu, they said it's been absolutely silent so far. >> we can resolve these without a violence confrontation. that's why we're here. if they can work them out peacefully without violence. >> should be known that the supervisor is also running for mayor against ed lee. i didn't hear what was just said. is that just something that

somebody announced? >> somebody verified it and announced it on the people's mike. >> we'll have to verify that on the own. protesters here believe the police raid is off. we will do that and try to confirm that. >> one of the impressions you get is it's not totally clear who is in charge. >> well, you have to look at this from the political element as well. you have the supervisors who don't agree. there's a mayoral race that is happening right now. it's also the middle of the night. police chief standing by to answer their phone. you doeflt don't have a full agreement on the board of supervisors on how this should be handled. that's the best way to put it. >> sure. we'll leave you to track down that talk about the raid being

called off. in oakland, an iraq war velt ran recovering from severe injuries he received while protesting occupy oakland. this video shows scott olson being pulled away from a chaotic scene with a gash in his head. his friends say he was mitt by a police projectile. of course, there were many projectiles. it's only adding to the tension in oakland. christie smith is live with the latest. good morning. >> good morning, scott. i have to say we're not feeling any of that teng out here this morning. in fact,@quieter than it has been in a long time. this is the closest we've been able to get in a number of days. barricades and fence that were up here are gone. one man told me he thought quite a few people left oakland to support the occupy sf movement. they were concern that had police might move in there again, there are no fences up.

really a radical departure from what it had been. maybe less than a dozen people and a tent out here. following an active day at the occupy oakland movement on what's going on with wall street. this is a much more sub daued police presence. at one point they tried to enter downtown bart stations. overall a much different tone out here. mayor quan who was ab sent from the event around occupy oakland had this to say. >> we decided not to have minimum police presence in the plaza over the next day or so people had to remember why i had to close it to again with.

>> earlier this week police in riot gear raided the occupy oakland camp that was out here in front of city hall since october 10th. then the protesters returned with their supporters. at least a thousand of them. there were bottles and rocks thrown. at least one major injury that you talked about earlier. we'll be talking about him more a little bit later this morning. and back here live there's a sign near the tent. protesters are calling on a strike for november 2nd, where they're asking students and workers to come on down and join a march through the city. reporting live in oakland. i'm christie smith. back to you. >> meanwhile, other news. an et quake rattled northern california. magnitude 4.7 hit in the sierra.

23 miles uds just before midnight. no reports of any damage. the bart board of brek tdirectol discuss a new cell phone policy in response to a controversial decision to shut down cell phone signals in bart stations over the summer. the board drafts a new policy to limit cell phone interruptions to quote the northeast extraordinary circumstances. bart gets to decide what the circumstances are. earlier this beer bart turned off cell stations at a civic station in san francisco during a protest over the fatal shooting. the cell phone interruption sparked a bigger protest over censorship and freedom of speech. the man beat the board of education when he argued one of the most famous supreme court cases in history. thurgood marshall the school did not win against the oakland

school board, which voted to close marshall elementary despite emotional pleas from parents and children. >> don't really want you to tear this down. as my mom says, i really love school. it's like the best thing that ever happened to me. >> but you really have to put yourself in the shoes of everyone here tonight. you can be creative. you can be brave. you can be bold. say maybe this process is not really a ripe one. >> district officials voted to close five schools total. it faces record budget problems after hours of public comment. the district voted to close lake view, marshall, maxwell park in santa fe elementary school ls. boy it was cold heading to work. >> it was chilly out there. we have 30s on the map already. and because it's so dry and clear, a little on the breezy side. this is set to expire at 6:00

this is where the only spot for construction is. you see flashing lights. but they're working on the onramp. jumping down to the south bay. let's look at the overall view. in the middle of your screen we see 880. the rest of the northbound routes are moving smoothly. the southbound side of 880 in 101 to 280 will have construction going on through the stretch until 6:00 a.m. that might cause slowing early in the commute. we'll track that carefully. meanwhile, jumping to the north bay, we're looking at these travel times and an easy drooi. highway 12 through novato an san rafael. it's cold. >> it's what the occupy protests are all about. now they have data to back them up. the rich are getting richer. the middle class gets left behind. and an art project brings healing for a bay area veteran. how he's sharing his work with

and welcome back to you. it is 4:44. you're looking at a live picture of san jose. new census data adding fuel to the occupy protest. the richest americans are getting richer. the poor and middle class are not keeping up.

according to a government report, income for the top one-fifth of u.s. households has jumped a whopping 275% over the past 30 years. contrast the poorest americans saw only an 18% increase over that same time period. that means incomes for the wealthy have grown 15 times faster than for the poor. middle class income rose about 40 40%. >> good morning to you. futures are sharply up after european leaders reached a late night deal to solve the region's debt crisis. this gives greece another bailout and is putting the losses from the greek onto the european banks. it's also expanding the size of rescue funds. this could lift the cloud of uncertainty off the market.

that would push the world back to a recession. we'll get data on unemployment, housing and third quarter gdp expected to show that the economy grew a bit faster after the splugish first half of the year. yesterday the dow rose to 11,869. and the nasdaq gained 12 to 2650. meantime toyota will halt production at four north american plants on saturday to cope with part shortages from thailand inundated with flooding to shut down a plant in indiana, kentucky, west virginia and ontario, canada. toyota has three factories in thailand, and the flooding is hampering efforts by automakers to ramp up production this fall. that's to make up for lost output following the japan earthquake this spring. and last but not least, chrysler's union workers have ratified the new labor contracts. the last of the big three to sign off on new deals. the uaw says that the contract

will generate 2,100 new jobs. that's a lot there. in total, the labor deals in chrysler with ford and gm will create 20,000 jobs in the u.s. that's good news. back to you guys. >> let's check in with christina this morning for a look at the forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you. it's still pretty dry out there, and it's chilly, but we've lost the gusty winds to the east bay hills, to the santa cruz mountains and to the north bay hills. so this morning we're in a better setup when it comes to fire danger. however, we still have the red flag warning firmly in place until 6:00 a.m. it should expire on time. everything i'm looking at leads me to believe the winds aren't picking up soon. high pressure moving to the east. you can see we're calm from santa rosa down the peninsula. nothing above five miles per hour. so we're looking really good. temperatures on the cold side.

38 degrees in napa. as we head throughout the next few hours, our temperatures continue to drop off. coldest time of the day around sunrise. 7:30 a.m. that means we'll see patchy frost develop over the bridges and overpasses. 71 in san francisco. 74 in fremont. 77 in livermore. beautiful time of year. temperature not too bad. don't need the heater or the a.c. through the weekend. we'll get the onshore flow back. the cloud cover serves as a blanket. it traps in the daytime heat from the day before. we have clear skies and all the heed radiates to the atmosphere, that's when it gets so cold around here. 75 degrees on your friday. the weekend is looking pretty good.

and welcome back to you. we're looking at 880. today governor jerry brown will unveil huge plans to change the state's retirement system bringing it more in line with what others have. they include changing benefits for new state workers by creating a 401(k) style savings plan. they have to rage the age that state employees can retire from 55 to 67. parts of the plan would need voter approval, the governor hopes to have legislative backing on the rest. labor groups vowing to fight any changes to their current retirement system. shooting for the film, the men and mavericks will make its way through san m tarks teo. hacienda street will be closed from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

crews will also be working on 25th avenue from 4:00 in the afternoon until 2:00 in the morning. the movie focuses on the life of santa cruz surfing legend moriarti. he died when he was just 22 in a diving accident in the indian ocean. the film, starring gerrard butler as his mentor is due out next year. for a look at stories we're following, we go to laura in the news room. good morning. >> good morning, everyone. we're closely following the situation at occupy san francisco this morning. campers at justin herman plaza were awaiting a police raid all night long. that has not happened. as you heard earlier in this show, campers believe the raid was called off. now the real story, scott, may be the political fallout of all of this. major ed lee and the police chief ordering the raids, but a handful of supervisors pleading overnight against any use of force. sure to create a political fire

squn storm today. it could have a dramatic impact on the san francisco mayoral race as well. we're closely following it. also we're following the situation in oakland where a few campers had to fight orders there and pitch tents in the plaza. we have crews covering all of this and the rest of the day's news. >> let's check in with mike this morning. 880 looked pretty smooth. >> that was a nice clear shot you showed about a minute and a half ago. we're looking at 680 and traffic flow is smooth. sycamore valley road. there's going to be a construction zone there. the offramp might be blocked. up to an hour through walnut creek. no major delays through that portion of your commute. and it's backed up on highway 4. antioch does not have any overnight closures. that's a smooth 65 registering. where that construction should clear in a few minutes.
