saying how shocked they are to see so much snow in october. >> reporter: yale and columbia's football team had the snow bowl. >> are your parents watching. >> reporter: plows on the field during time-out so the field wouldn't disappear. things looked pretty weird and very wintery everywhere with ghosts and goblins covered in snow while people stocked up on shovels and salt along with candy and things for trick-or-treaters. >> my daughter is not going to be happy. a white halloween? i don't think i have ever experienced one, honestly. >> the mad rush of people. we sell shovels. it's amazing how many shovels. it's from maine to maryland and left a trail of destruction. the unusual combination of heavy wet snow falling on still leafy trees brought countless limbs

and power lines down. >> snapped again. i'm worried about the power line. >> this woman narrowly escaped the falling tree that hit her car. >> the free fell on you while you were moving? >> correct. >> and so you got out by crawling through the passenger door? >> yes. >> so much snow it sparked a passionate debate. >> it's much too early. i'm not ready. >> actually, i love it. i'm ready for it. >> at least two million homes were without power many pennsylvania, new york, new jersey, and connecticut. passengers waited for up to six hours for flights from new york's airport that if the flight wasn't, hundreds were canceled. >> a jetblue flight from florida to newark was diverted bradley airport in connecticut where it was grounded for seven hours with no food, water, or bathroom available. >> it almost came to fist-a-cuffs on the plane. >> reporter: these first-time visitors to new york from texas had seen enough.

>> wouldn't you rather be in 80 degrees? >> i think so. >> reporter: and downtown in the financial district the protesters vowed to stay and occupy wall street got their first real taste of what may be one of their toughest challenges. winter. >> i don't know if i -- if i will be able to stay for the entire winter, but i know that there are people that most definitely will. >> reporter: the police and protesters will be battling that out in many cities in the weeks and perhaps the months to come if they stay that long. today people will be digging out and hoping that the lights come back on soon. so many people without power. it's also getting very cold. 35 degrees here and now in new york. temperatures only going up into the 40s, and, unfortunately, some of the utility companies are saying that they may not have power back on in some places until tuesday or wednesday of this week. some difficult times had theed for a lot of people. lester, back to you. >> all right, ron allen in central park this morning. thanks. states of emergency have been declared in several states.

there are also new warnings. the weather channel's side side is in west milford, new jersey, with more for us. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. we're only about 45 minutes from where you are sitting there in 30 rock, and we picked up 19 inches of snow. historical amounts of snow. it came down heavy, and it was wet. take a look from yesterday. we were snowing in over an inch an hour, and let alone a couple of days before halloween, and this is what happened. the snow sticks like glue to these tree limbs. the weight of all the heavy snow now when they come down. here's one of literally thousands of examples. this big limb took out these two transmission lines. power out here and across the state of new jersey. more than half a million customers in the dark this morning. by the way, some of the customers will be without power until wednesday. lester, back to you. >> all right, side side. thanks very much. now here's jenna. >> all right, lester. thank you. pennsylvania was one of the

first states hit with the storm, and that's where the weather channel's jim cantore is this morning. you warned us. >> when you look at some of the snowfall records that were broken, it wasn't just by a couple of inches. ten times the amount of snow they got in october at hartford, connecticut, for example. just obliterated that record. here's the deal. who would have thought in the first place that people would be pulling out shovels before they even pull out a leaf rake. that has been the case across much of pennsylvania as we've had anywhere from six to 12, even up to 18 inches of snow in some of the higher elevations. here's the issue. with that snow a lot of limbs coming down. i mean, look at the snowfall flakes yesterday. just huge snow flakes. almost the size of waffles coming down in the sky, and it wasn't long after those started falling here that we started to lose power. half a million at the height. now still 300,000 and pen-dot can't get to those roads before the utility crews get all the limbs repowered. >> thank you. as we said, this is truly an

historic storm, one that's given new york city its snowiest october since 1869. janua janice has more on this halloween surprise. >> it's more than just a surprise, and a big trick from mother nature. not only were the snowfall totals impressive and record breaking, they were record shattering. it doesn't take much since it's so early to see snow at all. we are seeing anywhere from nine inches in northern virginia and sky land to more than two feet of snow on the ground this morning in plainsfield, massachusetts. most areas areas saw a foot or more up the coast. winter storm warnings and advisories are still in effect for maine and most of new hampshire because it is still snowing there. the storm is winding up and moving off shore, but these areas will continue to see some more snow piling up and, of course, all those leaves on the trees are coming down still. the trees because of the weight of all that snow still seeing extreme power out in many locations. back to you, jen. >> i think jim really put it in perspective when he said before the leaf -- before the rakes

dan housely from whdh in worcester, massachusetts, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. here in worcester, about a foot of snow. a great mid winter scene, but here in october, we're talking more trick than treat. this was a record in worcester, the record about 7 1/2 inches. we got 12 inches here. parts of the state that had 20 inches or more. look at the piles we have here. we don't want this at this time. one of the reasons are, if you look off in the distance, you see green. trees still have leaves on them. haven't turned colors nor the beautiful leaf peeping that's supposed to happen. some leaves got covered with the snow, and you heard from mike seidel you heard how big of a problem that was. that was a problem with this state too. all of the tree limbs came down. we have half a million people without power here as well. we're hoping that rising temperatures and the sun help with that. >> we all gasped when we saw that picture.

remarkable. thanks for that report. if you like september, you will love october? if you like october, you love november? >> i'm not sure. it doesn't necessarily mean november will be worse or even december. it will be winter of just about everything just around the northeast and an example of that yesterday with the big winter storm that we would typically see more in january or february. from northern virginia, portions of west virginia, all the way up to new england, anywhere from 9 inches of snow in skyland, to more than 2 feet in western massachusetts. still over portions of maine today. that will be moving out tonight. all that snow has to melt eventually too. we'll see temperatures climb and it will start meltin around the bay area this morning, we're seeing 40s to 50s to start the day. eventually, more low clouds approaching the coast. a little bit of a cool down for
6:34 am
san francisco and the coast today. should be still well into the 70s. tomorrow, halloween looks a little cooler but dry. tuesday, we'll see gusty winds, dry conditions. thursday and friday, chance of showers. much cooler temperatures. we're talking highs, 50s and 60s by next weekend. now hire is lester. are you ready for halloween? our costumes revealed, right after these mess aims. it can get really complicated. not nearly as complicated as shipping it, though. i mean shipping is a hassle. not with priority mail flat rate boxes from the postal service. if it fits it ships anywhere in the country for a low flat rate. that is easy. best news i've heard all day! i'm soooo amped! i mean not amped. excited. well, sort of amped. really kind of in between. have you ever thought about decaf? do you think that would help? yeah. priority mail flat rate shipping starts at just $4.95, only from the postal service. a simpler way to ship.
