vi . st stopstop. new this morning, occupy oakland, the big general strike was mostly peaceful. overnight, things turned sideways with lots of vandalism downtown. i'll show you what it looks like coming up in a live report. >> indeed thousands of protesters blocked trucks to get into the port of oakland. some drivers say it hurts them financially. and solyndra executives pocketed big bonuses. the latest on the defunct solar company. it's thursday, november 3. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everyone.

i'm scott mcgrew. let's check the forecast with christina lauren. good morning. >> good morning. chances are you had to run the heater last night in the north bay. temperatures are in the 30s. 35 in santa rosa, 39 in napa. your temperatures will climb today, but we are going to see a significant storm drop in the bay area bringing rainshowers by 11:00 a.m. to the greater bay area. things start to change as we head through tonight. 4:31. any construction or slow downs? >> we have a full closure for highway 13 coming south from highway 24 closed from broadway terrace to moraga avenue. they are replacing an overhead sign until 5:00. nearby, eastbound 24 headed to the caldicut has construction blocking a lane. more in the east bay to follow, scott, but you have a big item. >> it is indeed. protesters and police squared off in oakland into the early morning hours following a day

long protest that shut down several businesses and the port of oakland. the protest started peacefully but turned confrontational. look at the cell phone video of a driver trying to get through an intersection at 11th and broadway. two protesters start pounding on the hood of the car. the car swerves to get away. it ended up hitting two people. both suffered minor injuries. police arrested dozens of demonstrators. christine smith joins us live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. a couple minutes ago a large group of police officers, oakland police and others, just took off down broadway. in fact, when we got here maybe 15 minutes ago the entire street here near 14th and broadway was closed because there was so much going on. so many officers, so many people wandering around after a very long night and a really, really what was considered a peaceful day, peaceful demonstration with occupy oakland.

then overnight, a group of demonstrators broke off, if you will. there was heavy graffiti here on the buildings. it is pretty much on several of the buildings around here at 14th and broadway. just a really dramatic turn of events from what city leaders say was a peaceful demonstration with about 7,000 people overnight. the splinter group broke off temporarily, took off a vacant building near franko gala plaza and started fires according to the police. the interim chief said some people were determined to cause trouble. i spoke with an officer by phone from the oakland police department. he said the group actually lit flares and threw them at officers, threw bolts and rocks. he said officers used teargas to try to disperse the crowd after they were told to leave. they did not. mutual aid was called in. i asked how many people were

arrested. one officer said he didn't have an official number. he said at least 60 though. i wanted to show you what it looks like back here live. it says there are quite a few people from occupy oakland who are trying to clean this saying this was not their intent. they didn't want to destroy people's businesses. they didn't want the graffiti there. this doesn't represent them. so they are cleaning this coffee shop here on the corner of the plaza. on the other side, someone broke the window. they have a sign up essentially saying that this was not their intention. it doesn't represent what they were all about in terms of trying to get the message out about financial inequality. pan across the street. i want to give you a sense of what the blocks look like. not just this one but several blocks with broken windows, graffiti, spray paint all over. kind of a mess down here. quite a few folks from occupy oakland have their own brooms and cleaning fluids, trying to make the best of it.

that's what we have live in oakland. back to you, scott. >> meantime, protesters succeeded at shutting down the port of oakland. thousands marched to west oakland and many rode buses where they claimed a victory over what they call capital commerce. truck drivers trying to pick up and drop off cargo were blocked from getting inside. some protesters climbed on the big rigs. many truck drivers trying to do their jobs were frustrated. >> i'm headed back for nothing. i have to spend $100 in gas coming back in the morning. >> i just want to do my job. this is keeping me from doing my job. >> many truck drivers are small businesses. some truck drivers said they did support the movement. occupiers are rallying against financial inequality but the costs are mounting fast. the shutdown at the port could be expensive. it generates more that be $8 million a day.

city hall workers sent home early. 5% didn't come in. 18% of 300 school teachers didn't come to class forcing the district to hire hundreds of substitutes. last week's sweep of the occupy oakland camp cost taxpayers more than $1 million. there were reports cleaning up the plaza cost $4,000 and replacing the lawn, $30,000. oakland's city council will hold a special meeting tonight to ask the public what it thinks about the city's response to the protesters. the council will discuss last week's police raid and the injury of marine scott olson. one city council member wants to redefine city policy to ensure police do not fire projectiles like the one that hit olson into the crowd of peaceful protesters. council members will hear from people affected by the demonstrations and try to develop a strategy for the

future. the martina school district dealing with threats. school officials, police and parents will meet at a community forum at the alhambra high school library from 6:30 to 8:00 tonight. the man responsible for the threats, 36-year-old larry bantola is an antioch man arraigned yesterday on 14 felony charges. they say he sent e-mails, letters and faxes to several schools. police say they have cracked a robbery ring. the thieves hit a convenience store and several of them. for months police got to a 7-11 on monument boulevard after it was robbed yesterday. three suspects ran out firing a handgun as they sped off. police chased them to highway 242 at concord avenue, caught them. police believe they are part of a ring that's robbed more than a dozen stores in the county. a popular danville dog park closed this morning because of a health scare. the town ordered the immediate

shut down of the canine corral. a vet reported that a dog infected with parvo played there this week. the highly contagious virus spread through dog waste. maintenance workers are sterilizing drinking areas, doing cleanup at the park. it will re-open on saturday. most dogs are vaccinated as puppies against the virus. >> let's check in with christina. >> good morning. it's still cold. 35 in santa rosa a. we have colder arir on the way o the bay area. saturday morning we could see the upper 20s. it will be cold, wet and windy throughout the day today. very different from yesterday. we had off-shore winds land to sea. the winds have shifted from the northwest as the front arrives. in northern california as we head through the morning hours it will spread to the south. noon to 1:00 p.m., your future

cast shows it to you here. we stopped the clock at 9:00 a.m. the front slides into the northern end of the north bay. by 1:00 p.m. we are getting a fair amount of rainfall across the bay area. except for the south bay. you have to wait for 4:00 p.m. after that beeel see shower activity lasting through friday morning and the cold blast moves in. temperatures are going to tumble. we'll end up in the 50s and 60s at least for the next five or six days as cold air moves into the bay area. we are talking about an interesting setup. we'll take you through temperatures talk about what's to come. we have frost in the forecast. very damaging to agricultural interests. sensitive plants. we'll talk about it coming up. mike, still have a closure? >> we do. just for another few minutes. highway 13 through the oakland hills, a closure through broadway terrace for sign replacement. there is a detour posted. eastbound 24, no major slowing

welcome back to you. time now 4:44 as we look at a quiet and peaceful san jose. the solyndra scandal frustrating taxpayers and former employees more after the latest revelations. executives took home hefty bonuses less than two months before declaring bankruptcy. a dozen executives pocketed bonuses ranging from 37,000 to 60,000. solyndra bankrolled by hundreds of millions in federal alternative energy loans -- taxpayer money. the loans were structured in an unorthodox way. solyndra's private stockholders receive payment on losses before taxpayers see a penny. >> if we find out some of the solyndra money went for bonuses

you can expect a lot of similar anger from taxpayers who said, hey, we don't get a company, stock, anything in terms of solar panels on the roof. instead some of the money went to employees and really how badly did they need to be retained? this was a company about to lay off everybody. >> the approximately 1,100 employees laid off by solyndra didn't receive severance pay. they are holding an auction to liquidate assets. an hour from now the committee investigating solyndra will vote on whether to serve an official subpoena on the white house. that will ratchet things up quite a bit. for a check on the markets and the news before the bell bertha coombs joins us from cnbc. good morning. >> good morning. the futures are modestly positive. let me walk you through why. the word crisis, the word chaos. both are greek in origin.

that's what's going on in greece now. they are holding an emergency cabinet meeting behind closed doors. we have conflicting headlines. but the sense now is that greece is going to back off. george papandreou, the prime minister, is going to back off this very controversial receive run dumb on austerity measures. meantime you've got the g20 meeting in cannes, france. they say there needs to be a resolution about greece and about the debt deal in order to help the global economy. that said, we are looking to be positive. we're getting some retail sales that look okay. also we'll get the weekly jobless numbers. the dow starts at 11,836 after rising 178 points after the fed left rates unchanged and said it could remain dovish through 2013. the nasdaq up to 2639. today's daily deal is the highly

anticipated publically traded company groupon, expected to price the ipo tonight. before it had lowered the price range, reportedly demand is so strong now it can be well above the range. groupon starts trading tomorrow on the nasdaq and the ipo is being eyed by other companies like zynga which is expected to go public by the end of the month. the biggie is facebook. you have to have a friend to get into that one. it likely won't happen until next year. apple not saying "i'm sorry" but conceding there is a problem with the battery in the new iphone 4s. they promised a fix soon. customers complained that the battery runs down quickly even when they aren't using it much. they tribute it to bugs in the software. the iphone 4 had problems with the antenna initially. once the bugs were worked out people were happy with the devices. >> all right. thank you much. it's time for companies to

start hiring holiday workers as this year the pay could be a little higher. survey by career builder shows 3 in so 10 retailers will hire to fill positions. more than half of employers will pay $10 an hour or more. applicants interested in long-term employment should apply early. let the employer know because some companies will transition temps into permanent employees. let's check in with christine that in morning. >> good morning. i have the cough as well this morning. you might as well. we have sharp turns in the changing weather. 35 degrees in santa rosa, still bone dry in many cities. because the air mass overhead is so dry once we get the next cold blast it settles in quickly. temperatures in the low 30s in some cities, 35 degrees in santa rosa. upper 20s as we round out

saturday morning's lows. it will be really cold, some of the coldest air so far this season. this morning we are running 20 degrees cooler than this time yesterday in napa. same in fairfield. the dry breezes kept things mild. what a difference 24 hours makes here. that's a significant dropoff. here's our weathermaker. this is a cold front sliding to the south throughout the day today. i'm not forecasting the significant rain over the greater bay area until afternoon. mostly between noon and 1:00 p.m. we'll see showers slide south of the golden gate bridge. we stopped the clock at 1:00 p.m. san francisco getting wet at that time. concord, fairfield and the system slides south impacting the south bay by 4:00 p.m. today. that could make for a rough commute home. plan on that. after that we'll see showers off and on until 5:00 a.m. friday. then the system clears out and the cold air settles in. temperatures today will be running very, very cool in comparison to yesterday's highs.

we had highs in the 70s. today i'm forecasting the upper 50s and 60s. cold and clear as we start out saturday morning. that will make for one of the coldest days we have had in almost 7 months. make sure you're ready for it. widespread frost, near freezing temperatures across the bay area. if you have agricultural interests keep it in mind. another round of rain on sunday keeping temperatures mild all the way through the mid section of next week. it will take a while for the cold air to mix out. scott? >> rick perry dropped by for a brief lucrative visit. he checked out the fairman hotel before appearing at a $1,000 a plate luncheon. perry later appeared at a fundraiser in southern california as well announcing a new fund raising team including john harris of the harass ranch beef empire and john spanos of

the san diego chargers. meantime herman cain accusing perry of mounting a smear campaign against him after more allegations of sexual harassment. a third woman is now says cain invited her to his apartment after a meeting. a pollster who we should note works for perry says he saw cain come on to a woman at a restaurant. >> i would challenge anybody that has statements to be made to come forward with the person making the statements. face mr. cain. >> one of the women was actually paid not to do that. cain's chief of staff blames rick perry because a perry consultant who worked for cain was aware of the allegations. perry denies involvement. the latest polls before the allegations showed cain led the republican field with 30% of the vote. coming up, a sad ending for a great white shark rescued in

look at the bay bridge this morning. 4:54. a great white shark released by the monterey bay aquarium has died. the latest shark died four days after release. experts recovered the shark's tracking device and will analyze the data. the shark had been on display at the aquarium for 55 days. since 2004 the aquarium caught and released six young great white sharks. it's been a year since the san francisco giants brought home the world series title. today is still giants day. last november the team returned home to a huge parade held in their honor. mayor newsome declared november 3 giants day. they didn't make it to the playoffs this year but had record-breaking attendance at games. mike? >> good morning, scott. we'll take you to the south bay where we have construction for highway 237. that's in your westbound direction away from 280 headed to sunniville. a lane or two locked as crews

start to clear out. further south the middle of the screen, construction just clearing off southbound 880 and stevens creek. that crew should be moving as well. we'll get a look at the krubs still going on for southbound highway 13. broadway terrace to moraga avenue. that's closed but should be re-opening in the next 10 to 15 minutes as they replace a sign overhead. that will go on tomorrow night. back to you, scott. >> thank you, mike. college students have heard about the freshman 15. researchers from ohio state university and michigan found that weight gain among freshman far less than 15 a pounds. closer to three. it doesn't seem to have much to do with college either. young adults who don't go to college gain as much weight as those who do. experts say focusing too much on fresh man weight gain could create unnecessary stress for
