station closed for service. you can get off in downtown oakland but not at the plaza and 14th because of a lot of activity. >> exactly. it continues to be developing news. in fact, this morning mayhem on the streets of oakland last night after occupy general strike protests got out of hand. today in the bay's kristy smith joins us live in oakland where dozens were arrested after what was supposed to be a peaceful protest in downtown oakland turned violent. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. right now most of the people wandering around the streets near 14th and broadway when we first got here even in some cases face to face with all the police officers here, they have taken off. it's mostly quiet now. what we have left here is a lot of graffiti and i mean a lot on pretty much every corner that we see around the plaza. this is 14th and broadway. if steve can pan over on the rite-aid building there is more

graffiti going down the street and across the street. what we are hearing though is, you know, what happened is that this was not in line with the general strike is what the occupy oakland protesters are saying. this demonstration was peaceful, brought in thousands of demonstrators to downtown oakland and the port to draw attention to economic inequality. overnight a splinter group broke off and police say they set fires and took over a vacant building near the plaza. one officer tells me that they threw bottles and rocks and even lit flares at officers and refused to leave the area. officers said they did deploy teargas overnight. this morning what really stands out is that some of the occupy oakland demonstrators are telling us that this really doesn't represent them at all. they are out here cleaning it up. >> you know, there are a lot of ideals. some people are angry and frustrated. sadly the aggression inside of

them is being let out the wrong way. we need to come in peacefully and try and get everyone to see we are just normal people like everyone else. you know, not just a rag tag bunch of crazies or something which is what they want it to seem like. >> reporter: i spoke with oakland police. they are still trying to tell me how many people were arrested overnight. it could be 60 is what one officer told me, maybe more. several windows on broadway are broken. but the demonstrators who are still out here are helping. they are taping up signs saying this doesn't represent them. they have brooms and cleaning fluids and trying to clean it up. they want to keep the movement going and don't want it marred by this. back to you. >> interesting to see what's to come as well. >> demonstrators were peaceful

but this morning some business owners right now assessing all the damage from last night. some protesters turned anger toward banks that didn't close yesterday. defacing atms, pounding on front doors and destroying front windows. nine branchs in oakland for wells fargo and only one was closed. protesters spray painted walls at a whole foods store forcing the market to close up shop. >> protesters have been taken into custody for violating curfew laws with late night demonstrations. according to occupy activists, most of them are expected to demand jury trials instead of paying fines and going home. if that happens, the cases could place a major strain on the court system. >> it's 5:04 now. new video and witness testimony is set to be released in the growing san francisco police misconduct scandal.

the public defender's office said the latest video shows warrantless searches, theft and falsified reports. this is video released in may that allegedly shows two officers stealing items after a drug bust. the fbi also looking into the charges of misconduct. 14 officers are still on the job. they are off of the plain clothes patrol. more than 100 cases have been thrown out since the investigation began. home invasion robbery has south bay deputies looking for two men this morning. santa clara county deputies say the men barged into a home on howell avenue in gilroy yesterday morning. one of them was armed with a handgun. a house cleaner was in the home at the time. the men did steal several items but they did not hurt the woman. this is a sketch of one of the suspects. one man described as white, six feet tall and 180 pounds. the other man, latino, 5'6", 150

pounds. >> another hit on the obama administration regarding the collapse of solyndra. a house panel has a big decision to make today. it's just the latest development in the investigation into the failed fremont solar kane. thousand more details. good morning, marla. >> less than an hour from now a house panel will vote on whether to subpoena white house documents related to solyndra. republicans in the house energy and commerce subcommittee say they have no other choice. they say it's necessary because the white house has denied or delayed requests for thousands of documents. a subcommittee chairman said, quote, we have exercised extraordinary restraint and patience these last eight months in the face of an administration that has fought our efforts to protect taxpayers every step of the way. the energy department says it is cooperating with the investigation. in fact, just yesterday it provided 1,200 pages of documents to investigators.

in the last week, more than 15,000 pages. yesterday's documents included interesting details of the energy department paid an investment banking firm a million dollars to analyze the solar company before its collapse and before it received the half billion dollar federal lone. the fi -- loan. the firm advised the company it was certain to fail without an infusion of cash. the energy company didn't follow the advice. two weeks later solyndra shut its doors on august 31. just yesterday the company auction kicked off selling everything from laptops to monitors to heat guns. politico reports the hottest selling item is the $18 solyndra t-shirt. in the meantime, we are going to be watching the house panel and the decision on whether or not to subpoena white house documents. that's happening at 6:00 this morning. laura? >> very interesting. one to watch.

thank you. >> it is friday eve, that's the good news. but it will be a funky, freaky, cold weekend. give you a reason to justify watching tv on the couch which is what i do on the weekends. looking good now. you saw the crystal clear start over the bay bridge. temperatures are cold and the system is coming in. it doesn't look like it's packing a lot of moisture. it's packing very, very cold air. you're at 35 degrees in santa rosa. look what's to come. 20 degrees cooler now than 24 hours in napa. this is what's headed our way. all the pockets of clouds here. this is an indication of an extremely cold air mass that will dip into the bay area throughout the day today. this is the associated cold front. it's weak. when we see deep bands we are talking moisture. moisture possible of one inch or more accumulation. we are expecting a quarter inch at best. i'll show you where the front is now.

it starts to slide to the south. you can see the clouds increasing ahead of the front. winds first and the rain arrives by 9:00 a.m. in the north bay. between 9:00 and 1:00 showers slide south of the golden gate bridge. between 11::00 and h showers in the south bay. then showers through 5:00 a.m. and the cold blast moves in. saturday morning we're talking one of the coldest mornings we have had in months. 62 in redwood city. 67 in san jose. temperatures down by 10 to 15 degrees from yesterday's highs. i have the 7-day outlook. there is more rain on the way coming up. let's get you to work on time. mike? >> a warning for folks through oakland hills. highway 13 south is completely closed. broadway terrace to moraga avenue.

the crew may be on scene for another 45 minutes changing an overhead sign. they did it through one section tonight and another nearby section tomorrow. construction in berkeley cleared from powell the off ramp re-opened. the east shore freeway moving at the limit. oakland past the colosseum, the live shot shows traffic moving smoothly with headlights southbound. fru fruitvale to the colosseum, construction is clearing. >> a local tech pioneer honored at the white house today. dale dougherty developed the first commercial website coining the phrase web 2.0 and even raises lambs on his farm north of san francisco. i'm not sure how those tie together. a renaissance man.

he's being honored as a champion of change at the white house as part of a make it in america event aimed to bring together american leaders creating high quality jobs in the u.s. >> cool. this morning, several starving penguins rescued in south america will call san francisco home. the six penguins were among a group of 373 that were saved from the shores of brazil back in 2008. they were deemed nonreleasable back into the wild and were donated to the san francisco zoo. with the new additions the zoo will have 51 birds, the largest colony in captivity in the world. scientists believe commercial fishing and climate change forced the penguins to travel beyond their normal habitat. but now calling san francisco home. not bad. >> every time i see penguins what movie do you think of? >> "happy feet"? >> yeah. there's a new one, too. and they know how to dance. dog owners beware. there is a possible outbreak at

it could be possibly blamed on the snow. all that jack frost is a bad boy. nine months ago a blizzard swept through the state forcing people to stay home reporting to what we call intimate indoor activities. >> don't people watch tv anymore? >> i like this choice. people report a so-called blizzard baby boom. a hospital in peoria said there were 60 births last week, more than double the usual amount. >> it's all timing out. we're not getting snow but we'll get rain. >> no, we'll get snow. >> in the higher elevations? >> oh, mt. hamilton, a dusting. >> that's it. >> but it counts. >> sure. >> no heavy accumulation. we are talking snow at elevations down to 3,000 feet which is really, really low for this early in the season. your temperatures are cool this morning. 35 degrees in santa rosa. 39 in napa.

expecting to drop off throughout the morning hours. our weather maker starts to slide to the south throughout the day today, but this, the core is what we're watching for you. that's packing extremely cold air. that will move into the bay area through friday night into saturday morning. now you can see we are still dry. clouds increasing ahead of the front. winds picking up as well. we don't expect the major rainfall to start until 1:00 p.m. we'll have the extended forecast coming up. first a check of the roads with mike. >> all right. let's look out here. no problems here through pittsburgh bay point in concord but the 62 is slow. no major issues for 4 through antioch off the bridge where the construction zone is clearing. northbound 680 shows slowing out of alamo into walnut creek. this crew is clearing. that's why you are seeing this slow down. we'll track it. 580 shows a 14-minute drive and no problems.

over to the dublin interchange through livermore and pleasanton peninsula. top two numbers into san mateo from the south or north, close to the limit and the peninsula is incident-free. a live look at the golden gate bridge shows you traffic, a clear view and a clear drive across the bridge toward the golden gate. easy, breezy. >> president obama in france this morning for the g-20 summit. the president was greeted by french president nicolas sarkozy who was hosting the event. the big topic this week will be europe's debt crisis. what happens in greece and the rest of europe already a big impact on what happens to america's economy. so for a look at the rest of the news before the bell, let's go to bertha coombs. good morning. >> good morning, john. we have a slew of headlines out of athens.

the g20 is being hijacked by what's a crisis now in greece. crisis is a greek word, in fact. the government at the moment in an emergency cabinet meeting. it's not clear if the prime minister, george papandreou, whether he will survive, the government will survive, what will happen with the controversial referendum he announced yesterday to vote on whether greeks want to accept austerity measures for a bailout. the headlines going back and forth. the futures now are positive for the moment. the feeling is there won't be a referendum vote. we have seen gold prices spike as people worry about what happens if we see greece default because of the confusion. that said, we did have a strong day yesterday after the fed left rates unchanged and said they will continue to try to prop up the economy. the dow rose to 11,836. the nasdaq rose 33 to 2639. we are getting reports from retailers for october sales.

they are coming in mixed, a lot of them blaming the weather. sales were forecast up about 4.5% overall. looks like we won't meet that. it was warmer the beginning of october which may have had shoppers delay buying coats and other winter things. last weekend's snowstorm on the east coast kept people away from the malls. the annual running of the brides, a big retail event, looks like it is no more. the venerable filene's basement filed for bankruptcy for the third time in ten years. looks like the store could close for good. retailers owned by the chain store syms which also filed chapter 11. they have been in business since the 1950s. it put itself up for sale but hasn't found a buyer. they will liquidate inventory. they are shutting doors by the end of january. they operate on the east coast.

this is so sad. i grew up in boston and the flagship store is where i learned bargain hunting with my mom. it was great fun. even that building, they took down the building. the flagship store is no more. it's the end of an era. >> a lot of hearts will be broken that the running of the brides won't happen. it's like an olympic event. >> it really is. hopefully somebody else will take it up. you know, some of the other discounters somewhere. it really is a great thing for brides, if you can get a gown for $200. >> if you get out alive. bertha coombs, thank you very much. >> some bay area men are the newest americans to hold the nation's highest civilian honor -- the congressional gold medal. japanese-american military units were honored yesterday, nearly 70 years after serving the u.s. in world war ii. lawmakers presented the awards to members of three special units. dan inoway from the 442nd regiment accepted the honor on

behalf of 19,000 japanese-americans who served during world war ii. senator barbara boxer addressed the personal conflict each man faced. >> you fought world war ii on two fronts. as president harry truman said, and i quote, you fought not only the enemy, you fought prejudice and you won. >> while the soldiers were risking their lives over seas their own families were confined in internment camps here in the u.s. >> the time is 5:2 1. police say they busted up a ron robbery ring. police arrived on monument boulevard after a 7-11 was ripped off just in time to see three men run out firing a handgun jumping into a car and speeding off. police did give chase, caught up to the car. they say the three teens jumped out and ran but the cops were able to catch them. officers think the teens were part of a ring that's robbed

raise $40,000 to make sure christmas in the park will be around again. the holiday event has entertained families for 30 years now. it was in jeopardy of shutting down because of san jose's budget troubles. local sponsors stepped up. while christmas in the park was saved the san jose holiday parade will not be back. it was one of the biggest parades -- we are getting groans in here. it was one of the biggest in the nation. >> we were going to have you in the parade for the first time. >> sit in the car. >> we'll drive in the back of your car. >> mike will just drive around downtown in the convertible. >> sometimes we do that looking for friends. it's 5:25 now. protesters in oakland wanted to -- want it known as oscar grant plaza. for a few minutes they got google to agree with them. >> this is the latest trick among people es spousing a viewpoint. change google maps to reflect

your side of the story. for a while occupiers changed in name in google maps. googles allows users to suggest changes using a tool called google map maker. a little like wikipedia. sometimes unauthorized changes sneak through. this happens fairly often. google tries to look out for it. in contested kashmir, one side will rename it indian kashmir and then it becomes pakistani kashmir and so on. it shows how politically important the name or a line on a map can be, even if it's a totally unofficial map. you have to hand it to the fed. they are consistent. once again the federal open market committee made predictions about the future. they are grim. normal levels of employment not coming until 2014 at the earliest. this will make the tea party and occupiers happy. the fed won't take steps to help saying the economy is recovering on its own slowly.

greek leaders meeting to discuss whether to back off the plan to hold a referendum. the greek prime minister said his country may not actually adopt the european union's rules in order to save itself from bankruptcy. also new this morning, france and germany told greece they can leave the euro if it wants to. that's huge like washington inviting california to leave the dollar so that the united states doesn't have to pay off our debt. that's enormous. >> we'll be watching closely. john? >> it's 5:27 now. still to come on "today in the bay" a school district talking to parents about safety after a string of threats on campus. >> reporter: we're live in oakland where protesters, even at this hour, are already trying to shut down the nation's fifth largest port. we'll update you on the latest coming up. >> it's time to put away the short sleeves and tank tops and break out the winter coats. we've got a mean winter storm on the way.

let's check in with the woman who tells us what's happening with the rain, et cetera. >> you have two choices. grab the umbrella and take it with you or get wet later today because the showers are moving in to northern california as we speak. on top of that, we are one degree away from freezing in santa rosa. 33 degrees up there. we expect the upper 20s as we head through the weekend as your overnight lows fall very cold. temperatures this morning are chilly. take your umbrella out the front door. we'll track the showers, let you know when they come. first, what's happening on the roads. the calm before the storm, mike. >> we have better news before the commute as well. highway 13 has re-opened after the closure overnight. they are changing the sign overhead. a similar area closed tonight. highway 24 the tunnel, all open after overnight maintenance work there. good news. >> it's great news. thanks. >> thank you very much. protesters and police squaring off in oakland during the early

morning. the strike was peaceful for most of the day anyway, but some protesters eventually got confrontational. look at the cell phone video of a mercedes trying to get through 11th and broadway intersection. two protesters start banging on the hood. the car swerves, tries to get away but eventually hits two people. fortunately both suffered nonlife threatening injuries. overnight police arrested dozens of demonstrators. today in the bay's kristy smith joined us live with the latest on what's happening this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. the crowd of people walking around the streets when we first arrived have all dispersed. it's startling when you see the graffiti, the handful of broken windows downtown. this is a coffee shop near frank ogala plaza. a plate glass window broken overnight.

what stands out is what some of the occupy oakland protesters are doing. they are putting up pallets and the sign "actions not done by the people." if we can walk around to this side over here i want to show you what some of the demonstrators are doing. they are saying this is a splinter group. it was really not what their message was. what people are doing here is they brought their own cleaning fluids and they are basically cleaning up all the spray paint that goes for several blocks here around the plaza. i want to show you video of what happened overnight when a splinter group broke off from the main group. they broke windows downtown and oakland police are saying that they actually took over a vacant building near frank ogala plaza. at one point faced off with police. police had to call for backup. they are saying they threw lit flares at them, bottles and rocks, that sort of thing. refused to disperse.

police did deploy teargas. they say at least 60 people, maybe more, were arrested. at this point, this is what we are seeing. they say despite the vandalism, graffiti, they are out here trying to clean it up saying it really didn't have anything to do with their message of financial inequality. that's what we have from here. reporting live in oakland, back to you. >> the sad by product is the small businesses are taking the brunt of that. thank you very much. >> meantime, john, protesters are back at the port of oakland this morning. thousands of demonstrators declared victory after they shut down the nation's fifth busiest shipping port. workers want to get back to business. but will the protesters let them? bob ridell has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we are not quite sure if the

port will re-open today. not if the protesters have anything to say. what they are doing now is they are trying to shut down some of the key intersections that allow trucks into the port. they have already shut down 3rd and adeline. they found chain link fence and put it around the intersection. and dumpsters tipped over. and here at 7th they had cones and they were doing this. look at the video. they were putting their own bodies in front of vehicles, standing in front of cars begging the drivers not to go in. they just gave up on that though because some of the drivers were so frustrated they were running over cones and going in. they are moving to another location. this is an incident that happened when we arrived about 30 minutes ago. take a look. >> -- 24 hours. >> i'm coming through.

i'm trying to earn a day's living. >> i understand, sir. >> you don't speak for me. >> reporter: that was one driver expressing frustration to one of the protesters. the protesters are trying to shut down the port, the nation's fifth largest because they believe it represents corporate greed. a lot of companies clearly use the port to ship goods in and out of the country. the protesters at the same time are trying to show solidarity with union workers who drive the trucks and operate cranes here who they consider to be part of the 99%, not the 1% who the protesters call the rich. they have 3rd and adeline shut down. they tried to shut down 7th where we are. that didn't work. they would like to shut down west graham and maritime which is a main artery off the interstate but they don't have the manpower to pull it off.

>> thanks for that, bob. >> the rules committee of the oakland city council scheduling a special council meeting today. the meeting starts at 5:30 at oakland city hall. the purpose of the public forum is to seek input from the public regarding the occupy oakland demonstration. city council wants to hear from people affected by the demonstrations and develop a strategy for accommodating peaceful demonstrations to go forward. >> it's 5:37 now. the martinez school district is dealing with a string of threats targeting local schools. officials, police and parents meet tonight for a campus safety forum. it will be held at the alhambra high school library from 6:30 to 8:00 tonight. the man responsible for the threats is 36-year-old larry bantola. the antioch man was arraigned yesterday on 14 felony charges. prosecutors say he sent e-mails, letters and faxes to several county schools. a murder mystery in san francisco this morning, one man

is dead and another is in the hospital. police were called to a home on brook dale avenue last night and found a man on the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he was pronounced dead at the scene. during the investigation, officers were notified a second victim walked into san francisco general hospital with gunshot wounds. his condition is unknown. anyone with information should call san francisco police. >> to go along with the weather christine lauren dropping a fashion forecast on us. maybe umbrellas, puffy coats. >> you will need to put the muscle shirt away, john, at least for a week. >> never! >> i'm sure you've got a puffy coat to make up for it. one degree from freezing in santa rosa. i'm not concerned about frost in the north bay, even with temperatures a degree above freezing. it's been so dry. relative humidities in the teens yesterday. if someone left the sprinklers on you could find frost.

it's been cold enough to freeze especially over metal or areas more conductive to temperatures. throughout the day today, temperatures aren't going to climb much. we end up in the 60s. i have eliminated the 70 from the forecast. we are two, three hours out from showers dropping into areas at ukiah and clear lake. sliding south by 1:00 p.m. p.m. showers today. take a look at the system. this is a significant dip in the jet stream. all the pockets of clouds here is an indication of a very cold air mass. you can see the cold core low right here, tightly wound dropping into the bay area. tonight and tomorrow, we head through friday and the jet stream is sitting over us making for a lot of instability. we could be watching for thunderstorms. today, gusty winds, intermittent showers and because it's cold and dry, snow levels from 6,000 to 3,500 feet. heavenly slated to open on the 18th. we'll talk about the sierra

woman at a restaurant in arlington, virginia, in the 90s. now there is a third woman who is accusing him from his time a the national restaurant association. reportedly saying he called her attractive, invited her to his corporate apartment but she decided not to file a claim against him. cain has been trying to avoid questions about this on the campaign trail. now one of his accusers wants to go public. she's bound by a confidentiality agreement. cain may have broken that already by talking about the incident. laura? >> interesting. thank you very much. 5:44 now. the case against the doctor accused of injecting pop singer michael jackson with a deadly dose of a powerful drug is nearing an end this morning. after four weeks of testimony, closing arguments are expected in the trial of dr. conrad murray. dr. murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter and
