6:01 am
hey, you don't want to be the guy caught off guard by the showers. bring the umbrella with you on your way to work. we could face a rough commute home. let's check the commute with mike. >> rougher for the north bay already. we have a road hazard, a big pothole in two lanes. the two fast lanes at southbound 101 approaching highway 37. folks are advised to use lake view highway to 37 because of the blocking of two lanes. they will likely have to do roadway repair. i will update you as i get updates. >> this is no surprise. protesters back at the port of oakland this morning. if they get their way, they will shut it down all over again. today in the bay's bob redell live with all the relentless per assistant protesters. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, john. thousands of protesters shut down the port overnight but as the new shift is trying to come
6:02 am
in they will try to keep the shutdown in effect. we are at 7th near the 880 southbound ramp. you have a handful of occupy oakland demonstrators here. you have eight of them and they are blocking both lanes of traffic. on your right here is the correct direction of traffic for drivers to be headed. what they are now doing is trying to go the opposite way over there. the demonstrators are standing in front of cars, trying to negotiate with drivers to take a stand to protest against what they believe is corporate greed since corporations used the port to ship their goods in and out. that's making it dangerous. you have a lot of drivers frustrated who are gunning their vehicles in the opposite direction. you have a trucker now going the opposite direction and off screen you can't see but there is a pickup truck headed this way. it is somewhat dangerous what's going on out here. let me walk over and talk to this guy, if i can.
6:03 am
hey, guys, good morning. we're live with nbc bay area. i just -- >> i'm sorry. we're having a circle right now. >> i think they are trying to recalibrate, reconsider what they are doing because it isn't safe out here. like i said, they have been trying to talk people into not going into the port. you have had people like you saw the driver earlier said, no, i'm going in. you have had other confrontations like this. take a look. >> we're trying to keep the port shut for 24 hours. >> i'm coming through. >> you can't do that. >> i'm trying to earn a day's living. >> i understand, sir. we're trying -- [ inaudible ] >> you don't speak for me. >> reporter: there have been honks coming from the truck drivers in what we assume is a sign of solidarity. it looks like the protesters have given up on the quest to
6:04 am
shut down this road because i think they realize just how dangerous it is. now they have just re-opened 7th headed into the port. they still have 3rd and adeline shut down with chain link fence and tipped over dumpsters. they said they were going to try to shut down grand at maritime. these are major arteries into the port. but right now they don't have the number of people necessary to pull it off. john, laura? >> bob, the attitude you got there trying to interview somebody seems pervasive. are you getting the vibe these small numbers but are violent with their attitude? >> reporter: i think in that situation right there and they have been very -- i think right there they were just tense because they were getting honked at and you had cars gunning past them. we were getting worried because it's so dangerous. you don't know who's going to react in what way.
6:05 am
clearly it's not safe to stand in front of a major artery like this one that's going on now. >> no question. interesting to see how it pans out as more protesters show up. thank you very much. >> 6:04 now. protesters in frank ogawa plaza squared off with police. it started peaceful but turned violent. some protesters are already up trying to help clean up the mess this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, they are. i have to say it's quite startling when you pull into downtown oakland this morning. there is quite a bit of graffiti. you can follow my hand here. we are at 14th and broadway. we were here yesterday. there was no graffiti over there on that building. it goes all the way around the corner. i wanted to pan over and show you the building with the rite-aid sign there. there is graffiti there, down this street. if steve can follow me over there there is a coffee shop
6:06 am
here at frank ogala plaza. i want to show you one of the plate glass windows here overnight. looks like someone threw something through the window. what we are seeing is that some of the occupy oakland protesters are putting up signs. this says, actions not done by the people. they are trying to distinguish themselves saying this doesn't represent them. we have seen them out here with their own cleaning supplies, with brooms, cleaning up glass. overnight police say a group broke off and it wasn't representative of what was going on all day with the strike and the occupy oakland movement. someone set fires. one oakland police officer i spoke with said the group threw rocks and bottles, roman candles and a lit flare at police officers who had to call for help from other agencies. this group even took over a vacant building near frank ogala plaza where the encampment is.
6:07 am
police officers are saying this was carried out by peaceful protesters who remained at the plaza. demonstrators say this is not in line with their message so they are cleaning it up. here's what one man had to say. >> you know, there is a lot of ideals, aggression. i think we need everyone to see we are normal people like everyone else. not just a rag tag bunch of crazies or something which is what they want it to seem like. >> reporter: just a couple of minutes ago we shot new video of the police recruiting center in the internal affairs office near the plaza. the windows are broken. the front door broken. there is spray paint on it. there is a security office there. same thing. when we were there, police were outside taking pictures of it.
6:08 am
they are telling us up to 60 people were arrested overnight. maybe more. but back here live i wanted to give you a sense of what's going on. these windows here, when we first arrived at the coffee shop were covered in graffiti. the crew has been making quick work of it using wd-40 and scrub pads to try to get everything off of it. they say they really want to make sure the message is a positive message and this isn't something they endorse at all. that's the latest from oakland. back to you. thank you very much. in the meantime, two protesters were injured after a car hit them on broadway. we have had cell phone video of the incident. it happened around 7:30 last night. witnesses told police the driver had accelerated into the crowd out of frustration. other protesters pounded on cars. a man and woman were injured but the injuries weren't life
