attack. >> everyone loves him. who doesn't? he has a great personality. but this is t fivehe gop hopefuls present aid unified front at a dinner honoring ronald reagan. >> you might say, newt, we're involved in a project called operation occupy the white house. >> is that better? >> reporter: with the republican field unsettled and iowa's first in the nation caucus now less than two months away, experts say the race could go down to the wire. >> until iowa republicans focus on a true decision, not who they like now, not who excites them now, he may have a distorted view of what iowa republicans want. >> reporter: lester, while herman cain's has held steady since this controversy broke a week ago today, a new poll out last night from reuters shows some slippage. the percentage of republicans who view cain favorably dropped

9% in the past week to 57%. and dropped 5% to 32% among all registered voters, so it appears -- it's too early to tell, lester -- whether he can survive this. it appears this controversy is taking its toll, and he is losing some support at this point. >> lester. >> mike, thanks very much. david gregory is moderator of "nbc's meet the press." good morning to you. >> good morning, lester. >> we saw in that report cain clearly doesn't want to talk and wants to move past all this controversy. neither apparently do his accusers. they're not speaking publicly. is it beginning to look like committee weather this storm? >> well, he might be able to for a couple of reasons. one, if none of the accusers want to go forward and sort of continue this, it doesn't mean that new revelations will not come out. there are still reporters looking into this. i think when he has had such a difficult week getting his story straight saying if you look at the responses, that's enough, and i'm done. i want to talk about other things. i think that could be difficult. here's the other point, lester. he has created this alternate

universe where he uses this controversy, in effect, to say to his supporters, you see, this is -- this is what the media does. this is what, you know, the establishment does. they're out to get me, because i'm the frontrunner. remember clarence thomas. he does all of that together and attempts to galvanize his core support, but here's the other question. can he get above that 25%? can he really get new people to take a look at him after all this? >> well, let's say it's not hurting him right now. is it hurting, for example, mitt romney who is not getting any attention during all this? >> well, it hurts -- i don't think it hurts mitt romney. mitt romney is happy to have herm ain cain getting this kind of attention. it's still sort of detracting from the idea that it was supposed to be a perry-romney race. they're not -- the romney campaign privately and publicly are not saying anything disparaging about herman cain. why? they don't think is he electable. they think this is flirtatious and not marriage. who it's bothering is the white house because they think this is getting in the way of romney getting roughed up by his

rivals. >> well, of course, the president's approval rating is starting to rise a little bit after hitting some historic lows for his presidency. has this bought him some time, though? the focus on the republicans right now? has it bought him time to get a strong message to go against republicans? >> well, i think the president has to hope that this is a bruising enough primary fight that whoever the nominee is comes out more weakened and more vulnerable to a choice kind of election rather than a referendum. by that i mean once the president gets into a one-on-one situation, his top people are saying he is going to go very hard at tearing down the republican nominee. why? the president doesn't want to run on his record per se. look how pessimistic the country is. look how many people think the country is off on the wrong track. 9% unemployment. a million out of work. this is not a record to run on per se. it is to say, look, i had to make tough choices, and the other guys are no better wrash that's going to be the strategy. >> i know you are continuing on your meet the candidate series this morning. who do you have on? >> we're going to talk to john

huntsman, a more moderate republican in the race who is really betting everything on new hampshire. the question is can he really start to take the fate to mitt romney, which i think is something he wants to do. >> all right. we'll see you in a bit. david gregory, thanks vemp. >> thanks, lester. craig melvin at the news desk with more of the morning's headlines. craig, good morning to you. >> lester, good morning. good morning to you, as well, know. we start with breaking news in baghdad this morning. police say three bombs killed at least eight people in broad daylight today at a busy market in the central part of iraq's capital. 21 others are wounded at the beginning of a muslim religious festival there. amanda knox's ex-boyfriend is speaking out for the first time since he and knox were cleared of murder in ilgsy. he says he wishes knox all the happiness in the world, but their tragic ordeal was too much for their romantic relationship to endure. the couple spent nearly four years in prison until their original guilty verdicts were dramatically overturned last month. people in central oklahoma

more accustomed to twisters than tumblers have been shaken this weekend by at least four major earthquakes there saturday night. a 5.6 magnitude skwak, the state's strongest ever. it buckled a highway, and shook a football stadium 50 miles away. at least ten aftershocks have followed. fortunately, there are no reports of injuries. former heavy weight boxer champ joe frazier is in the biggest fight of his life now. the 67-year-old frazier has liver cancer. doctors discovered it just a few weeks ago, and frazier is now in hospice care, and his manager says they're hoping for a miracle. more than 47,000 people are running in new york city's marathon this morning. they've bulked up on pasta saturday night for the 26.2 mile course through new york's five boroughs. it's one of the longest and one of the toughest races in the world. a quick look at stories that we're watching this week.

an asteroid bigger than an aircraft carrier will dart between the earth and moon tuesday. it is the closest encounter by such a high rock in 35 years, but scientists say there's no need to worry. it won't hit us. the rockefeller center christmas tree arrives at 30 rock friday. it will be decorated with more than 30,000 lights. the tree lighting ceremony november 30th on nbc. and wedding chapel operators in las vegas are predict thering will be thousands of weddings this friday because it's 11-11-11. that's the news for now. back back to lester, jenna, and janice. >> didn't they take the tree down, like, last week? >> it just happened yesterday. >> it's coming back this week, really? >> has the year just gone like this? >> i say hold ownering the tree will be here before you know it when the heat are complaining about the heat and all that kind of stuff in the summer, and here we go. >> you are so right. >> our weather today is going to be perfect for the running of the ing new york city marathon

charged with molesting at least eight boys. nbc's kristen dahlgren has the story. >> i'm jerry san dusky. >> reporter: former penn state defensive coordinator jerry san dusky. >> when the wing goes in motion. >> reporter: on the knitly lions sideline for decades, instead in court saturday accused of sexually abusing eight boys between 1994 and 2009. while penn state's athletic director tim curly and senior vice president gary schultz are now charged with an alleged cover-up. >> i lost control of this game. >> reporter: back in 1987 nbc profiled the coach and a charity he started for at risk kids. >> they're not supposed to succeed. well, they succeed here. >> reporter: a grand jury reports that san dusky met his alleged victims through that charity and details allegations including those of a graduate assistant that he saw san dusky having sex with a young boy inside penn state's football building. but according to the grand jury school administrator gary

schultz testified the allegations were not that serious, and that he and curly had no indication that a crime had occurred. and when asked whether the graduate assistant had reported sexual conduct of any kind by san dusky, curley answered no twice. curley and schultz are expected to turn themselves in on monday. >> this is a much more serious issue than other schools getting on probation for ncaa violations. we're talking about the law here. >> reporter: but outside court saturday san dusky's attorney man takened his innocence. >> he is shaky, as you can expect, being 67 years old and never having faced criminal charges in his life. >> reporter: in his statement curley's lawyer says "we will vigorously challenge the charges in court, and we are confident he will be exonerated." an attorney for schultz says he is an honorable and law-abiding man, father, and grandfather. he is innocent of these charges. the grand jury did not implicate penn state coach joe paterno, saying he reported the alleged

hamilton. the radar has been showing, as you see there, a little snow. you can see the widespread rain we saw yesterday. that's moved on. today, we're going to get chilly, sunshine, a few isolated showers. look at our temperatures. upper 50s to just about 60 degrees. so the weekend's going to finish fairly cool. good news, at least for the start of the week, we're going to be dry. a bit warmer towards wednesday. next chance of rain probably rolling in on thursday. >> all right. thank you very much, rob. in ant yok, a homeowner shot and killed a man who was allegedly trying to steal copper pipe and wires from his property. police say they received a call from the homeowner yesterday afternoon. the man told him he interrupted the burglary and shot the burglar after he threatened him. the homeowner was not arrested. a memorial service will be held today for a north bay mother who saved her son while they were swept out to sea.

she died nearly two weeks ago while swimming with her son at a beach in costa rica. a strong current pulled them from shore and they both struggled to stay afloat. she held her son above water long enough for a rescuer to come by. she's survived by her husband and two sons. a memorial service will be held at 2:00 this afternoon. protesters are encouraging people to withdraw their money from big banks and invest in smaller banks and credit unions. just yesterday, protesters rallied outside one wells fargo bank in oakland with security guards blocking the entrance. signs were later posted stating that the bank was closed for the day because of an emergency. one loyal bank of america customer who says he's been with his bank for more than 30 years joined the protest. he closed his accounts and moved

romance. it was prince william's boyhood home. soon, his marital home. the duke and duchess of cambridge will move into a royal apartment in kensington palace. apartment 1-a. last lived in by the late princess margaret. they have a modest apartment at kensington palace. but this new space will be permanent and bigger. moving their entire office too. >> separating from prince charles. it shows more independence. but people will think this is all about having a baby. >> reporter: with rumors flying of a royal baby, any nursery plans will have to wait. >> princess margaret's old apartment won't be ready until mid 2013, because there are a lot of renovations to be done. >> reporter: charles and diana raised their princes from birth in this palace.

this weekend, newly published photos from diana's hone moymoo. the pictures show the first days of marital bliss. >> everybody in recent history has talked about the acrimony between charles and diana. when you look at these pictures, you see how very happy they were. >> reporter: a very public honeymoon, rather than the private escape william and kate had in the seychelles. but young royals at a similar stage of life. >> these pikctures tie into the younger love story of william and kate. which we are part of at the moment. >> reporter: prince harry is coming home. he is expected to move into the current kensington home after he finishes his current training nation california. bringing a new generation of royals and two princes back to the palace.
