with just a few ingredients you have an easy dinner... pillsbury crescent dogs... school night ideas made easy. on "today in the bay," banking on change. a nationwide movement to pull money out of big banks all started with a single facebook posting. plus, neighbors in a usually quiet south bay city are are in shock over the city's first killing there in two years. the victim was just 14 years old. having an earthquake right now, our lights shaking quite a bit here. it is now calming down. >> and a quake hits just as a newscast goes to air in oklahoma. we're going to show you reaction from inside the studio, plus the damage outside. this is "today in the bay."

good morning. taking a live look at san francisco this morning. a very nice, bright start. that's because it is 7:00, and we fell back. so we got an extra hour of sleep. look how chipper we are. >> i'd like an extra hour. we did roll back the clocks last night one hour. we had a lot of rain yesterday evening. as you saw from san francisco, skies have cleared. 50 degrees, but showers are lurking off the coast. oakland, 55 degrees. broncos taking on the raiders today. san jose, 48 degrees. as you look at the radar view, off to the east of san jose, you can see showers. look at mount hamilton. a little bit of pink there on the radar. could be a little bit of snow near 4,000 feet this morning. your temperatures hour by hour.

40s for most places inland. toward lunchtime, should be seed 50s. notice the few lingering showers. even with the sunshine today, 50s and 60s. as we head back to the workweek, we'll see temperatures trying to climb up before the next chance of rain. we'll walk you through that coming up. >> you're so impressive with your timing. i was watching a little birthday party at the park yesterday. i was like, blow out the candles. rob says 2:00. >> we literally mean hour by hour. >> you guys are awesome. see you in a bit. it is sunday, and many credit unions are closed today. this weekend, many protesters are encouraging people to transfer their money out of the big banks and invest in local credit unions and banks. in oakland, wells fargo had to shut down one of its branches. people rallied in front of wells fargo and bank of america. monte francis reports. >> reporter: bank security stood

in a blockade preventing protesters from entering a wells fargo branch in downtown oakland. after a brief struggle, signs went up in the window stating the bank was closed for the day due to an emergency. >> banks got bailed out. we got sold out. >> reporter: protesters also disrupted business at several banks in san francisco. a local customer for more than 30 years told us why he decided to join in on the protest, closing his account and moving his money into a local credit union. >> it's only a small gesture. i'm not in a position to do much damage. at least for my own conscious, i didn't want my money going to that kind of activity. >> reporter: that activity, protesters say, includes the practice of predatory lending and imposing unnecessary fees. figures show that just in october, at least 650,000 people switched to credit unions after b of a announced it would start charging a monthly debit card fee. that's more than the total number last year. the bank has since cancelled the fee. for many customer, the damage

has already been done. >> they got too much power. they're kind of taking things over. they're, you know, they cater to the 1%. i'm not 1%. >> reporter: bank transfer day started as a facebook post by a frustrated bank customer in los angeles. the founder says she has no connection to the occupy movement, but many who took part are aligned with that movement and its message against corporate greed. monte francis, "today in the bay." >> experts say that even though hundreds of thousands of customers have left corporate banks in recent weeks, it's not enough to drastically effect the profit that bank of america or the other big banks make. you might be saying, remind me the difference between a big bank and a credit union. well, basically a credit union is not for profit, and you must qualify to join. credit unions also typically have higher interest rates than big banks, lower fees, and usually no minimum balance requirement. on the downside, credit unions

have fewer branches and atms. often, the online banking isn't as strong as a at the big banks. one thing that is the same, deposits are both insured by the federal government. we found two sites where you can find out more. findacredityunio findacreditunion.com. there's also a website called findabetterbank.com. bay area occupy protests were cold and wet this weekend but peaceful so far. in atlanta, a different story. police arrested about 20 people at an occupy protest there. mostly for refusing orders to stay on the sidewalk as hundreds of protesters left a city park. occupy protesters began demonstrating at that park october 7th. the city's mayor initially issued an executive order allowing them to camp there but then later revoked the order citing security concerns. to a story we first brought you yesterday morning. the deadly shooting in morgan

hill. we now know that the young woman killed in that drive-by shooting was just a 14-year-old girl who was leaving a birthday party. the girl was with fellow party goers when gunmen shot her and three other teens before fleeing the scene. this morning, two 14-year-old girls are also in critical condition. a teenage boy was treated and released for a leg wound. officers were in the area and followed the getaway car for several blocks to another apartment building and arrested five suspects, including one who is under age. police say several of those suspects have records. >> all of them were known gang members. one is on probation with a gang clause. so they are known. >> morgan hill police say they know gangs are active in this neighborhood, so the department is going to step up patrols there with the assistance of the santa clara county sheriff as well. in san jose -- and we did talk with members of tara romero

fund. any donations would be greatly appreciated. clearly, families don't plan for funerals for young people. in san jose, a teenage girl died after she was struck not by one car but by two. this happened just after 8:00 last night. the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. the drivers of both of those cars that hit her remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. in antioch now, a homeowner shot and killed a man who was allegedly trying to steal copper piping and wires from his property. police say they received a call from the homeowner around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. that man said he interrupted a burglary at his vacant rental home. he says he shot the burglar after the burglar threatened him. this particular home has been burglarized several times. a reminder to slow down and

drive carefully on our wet roadways. overnight, four cars smashed into each other on highway 101 sending three people to the hospital. this happened on southbound 101 in millbrae. t three people were taken to stanford medical center. at least four others were hurt. the california highway patrol closed all but one lane of traffic for several hours clean. we still have more on "today in the bay." >> having an earthquake in the studio right now. >> the oklahoma earthquake was captured on camera during the top of a newscast. let's see if they react the same way we do, shall we? plus, tens of thousands of peoplefor alannu pirima gather e r o meannual gepimage to mecca. looking live a at the bay bridge this morning. sure did look different yesterday, right? it was all dark. now we see lots of sunshine. maybe some rain still in the forecast. rob mayeda will tell us the timing of that. he's so good at that. er th er thithey are assessi damage is in oklahoma this morning. not from tornados, which they're used to, but from an earthquake. it was a 5.6-magnitude quake that hit at the top of the newscast in oklahoma last night. it shook the set. it rattled lights, and it buckled a highway and cracked some buildings in central oklahoma as well. there are in initial reports of major damage. people did report feeling it as far away as tennessee. now, the quake was centered about four miles east of sparks, which is about 44 miles northeast of oklahoma city. that may be the strongest one in state history. there have been smaller quakes throughout the day as well.

well, this morning quite a site as the muslims continue the annual hajj in saudi arabia. they circle the holiest site in islam. pilgrims threw three rocks at pillars in a symbolic stoning of the devil. today also marks the start of the sacrifice holiday. saudi officials estimate about 2.5 million muslims will participate in hajj this year. every muslim who is physically and financially able must perform the pilgrimage once in their lifetime. still more to come on "today in the bay." encounters of the enormous kind off the coast of santa cruz. all caught on tape. we're going to talk to the woman in the right place at the right time. and here's a view of the

[ crunching, sipping ] be happy. be healthy. can i try yours? and looking live at a beautiful picture of the bay bridge this morning. the water doesn't look too choppy, though it does look very cold. won't be swimming there any time soon. rob mayeda's forecast for the rest of your weekend. if you didn't clean out your rain gutters, you might want to do it today. >> they might have been cleaned out by all that rain we had yesterday evening. we had almost 1 inch in most of the north bay. most of the widespread rain has moved on. 30s out there. 50 in san francisco. 47 in san jose. not much wind outside right now. we'll see northwest winds picking up this afternoon. notice the time change. sunshine in san francisco. be extra careful as you take the kids off to school tomorrow. this time change means now getting the bright sunlight out of the east for the 7:00 hour. you may have to readjust to the

change in lighting for the next couple days. 47 right now in san jose. over towards oakland, 49. we're watching the raiders, broncos game. should be close to 60, mostly dry forecast. maybe a passing shower or two, especially around the east bay hills through the afternoon. some of the weather headlines. cool, sunshine. we're going to get a lot more sun today than what we had yesterday. kind of a gloomy day saturday. today, more sun but kind of cool. tomorrow, we'll see patchy fog for the morning. first half of the week looks dry. second half of the week, we're going to say stay tuned as a cutoff low approaches the bay area. right now, still some scattered showers off to the east of san jose. you can see it on the radar. still cold up there around mount hamilton where it's 34 degrees. may still see snow flurries there. things are starting to dry out. we're only expecting isolated showers around the bay area. for the sierra, the winter storm warning until 10:00 this morning. snow levels close to 40,000

feet. we have this cool air spilling down. this is going to keep our temperatures mostly in the 50s and still give us a chance of isolated showers. you can see this toward the north bay around lunchtime. still more cloud buildups during the evening as that area of low pressure actually tracks off through southern california. notice on the east side here, maybe an evening shower. overnight, things completely dry out. then we'll be watching for a little bit of patchy fog. temperatures today around the bay area with extra sunshine, still fairly cool. it's the cooler, drier air cancelling out the added sunshine effect. so our temperatures are going to be just about the same range as yesterday. probably a couple degrees warmer. so we'll maybe see a 60 or low 60 in some spots south of san jose. first half of the week looks dry. we should warm up a little bit towards wednesday. then thursday and friday, somewhere in that time frame looks like we'll see the rain come back. another chilly and showery

weekend setting up for next saturday and sunday. >> i always forget. are you a snowborder or skier? >> i'm a snow crasher. i just fall over. >> oh, well, then let's see what we have snow-wise. >> we need a lot of powder for folks like me. >> exactly. well, the sierra received a healthy dose of winter. several snowboarders up in the area taking advantage of temperatures in the 20s. last night, interstate 80 was very slippery. the driver of a westbound pickup truck lost control and went off the roadway. fortunately, no one was hurt. chp officers say drivers need to get into the winter mind set again when driving in the mountains. >> drive slow. secondly, have plenty of gas, warm clothes, and food. make sure you have the correct size chains.

>> while the snow may be a headache for drivers, it's certainly helping to boost the area economy. local ski resorts are in the process of hiring more than 1,000 seasonal workers. well, is it the thrill of a lifetime or the scare of a lifetime? another incident of man meets whale in our local waters. amazing video of an encounter caught on tape. >> reporter: she spent halloween off the santa cruz coast, and boy, did she get a treat. >> the two whales come out out of the water. mouthful of anchovieanchovies. we were all in shock. >> reporter: she was just 20 feet between this encounter. >> the whales are moving around. before you know it, you're in the thick of it. >> reporter: this isn't the first time she has been up close and personal with these mammals. she got even closer. how about five feet away.

>> it came right by me. i mean, once again, almost fills the frame because it's right there. i'm seeing about this much of the whale's back. >> reporter: whale watchers have turned santa cruz harbor into a circus since this photo came out. officers are warning watchers to keep a safe distance from the whales. >> i'm going to make it a point not to ever be that close again because it really isn't fair to the bhwhales. it really got out of hand. kayakers and stand-up paddled boards and sailboats were just pursuing these whales. it was really altering their feeding and lifestyle and behavior. >> reporter: it's an experience barb will never forget. >> it is thrilling. it really is thrilling. >> i was just shocked nobody was screaming in the video, right? i would be screaming. the surfer and the two kayakers were okay. they were not hurt.

was used from the cotton fields to the store shelves. >> now, with the dry finish technique, you can actually achieve this with one liter of water or less. >> reporter: it's all about sustainability. the bay area jeans giant says it's putting two million new pairs of jeans in stores made with better cotton grown in india, brazil, and around the world. >> farmers are trained, and they're educated to really farm in different ways that are more sustainable that use less water, that use less chemicals. >> reporter: they're also asking customers to cut back on water and electricity usage by not washing their jeans after every wear, using only cold water, and air drying them. some people have floated the notion as the freezer as a better option. >> that may be an urban legend. it's something that's kind of going around.

>> reporter: levi's says their waterless line is making an impact on the environment and customers. >> would you go into the store and seek that out? >> probably not. i think it's more of a marketing endeavor. i don't think it's a genuine interest in environmental sustainability. >> reporter: but levi's insists it is genuine, and it's hoping other companies will follow in its every-shrinking global footprint. >> a reason to do less laundry. i'm down with that. "today" show's matt lauer will be traveling around the world this week as he celebrates the tenth anniversary of where in the world is matt lauer. here's a preview. >> reporter: if you think traveling around the world for a week is tough, getting ready to travel around the world for a week is no picnic. >> i try to get my rest, but that never seems to happen because the week or two leading up to where in the world is as frantic as any week of my year. i generally get on the plane

aechb and looking live this morning. a little brighter than it was yesterday because we fell back. daylight saving time in effect. that means we are a little more rested this morning. thanks for joining us. we are very cheerful. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda, who's been watching the rain kind of come in and leave the picture again. >> moved out. we had quite a bit of it come in yesterday evening. now we're just seeing the cooler air settling in.

speaking of cooler air, 39 degrees in santa rosa. though, you'll notice most of the clouds have moved on, we still have air that's slightly unstable, especially over some of our hill tops. mount hamilton seeing a little bit of snow near the summit. things have kind of cleared out around highway 17. during the afternoon, those showers on the north coast will drift towards the bay area. we'll see sunshine today, still leaving a slight chance of isolated showers near the coast. as the sunse sets, we'll see th chances of showers end. we'll let you know about the next chance of rain coming up. >> thank you very much, rob. fed up consumers are trying to get all of us to withdraw our money from big banks and invest in smaller banks and credit unions. on saturday, protesters rallied outside of one wells fargo

branch in oakland with security guards blocking the entrance. signs were later posted stating that the bank was closed for the day because of an emergency. in san francisco, protesters disrupted several banks as well. one loyal bank of america customer who says he's been with the bank for 30 years says he's now joining in a protest. he told us he's closing his accounts and moving his money to a local credit union. >> it's only a small jegesture. i'm not really in a position to do much damage. i didn't want my own money going to that kind of activity. >> just last month, more than 650,000 people withdrew their savings from b of a after the bank announced it would raise fees for debit card users. b of a has since cancelled that plan. many people whose homes are under water financially in san francisco decided to protest as well. >> banks got bailouts. we got sold out. >> the group marched to five different bank branches yesterday and called on executives to make some real changes such as reducing

interest rates on outstanding mortgages to competitive rates, modifying loans by reducing principiple in some cases as we. >> seems like they have too much power. they're kind of taking things over. they're, you know, they cater to the 1%. i'm not 1%. >> the district has the highest foreclosure rate in the city and the group targeted bank of america, wells fargo, citi bank, chase, and u.s. bank. in the south bay, a 14-year-old girl is dead. the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting. she and her friends had just left a birthday party when the shooting happened. "today in the bay" has the latest on the victims and the investigation from morgan hill. >> reporter: morgan hill police say there were about 10 to 15 teenagers on the corner of this block for a birthday party friday night. a 14-year-old girl was killed. three others injured. >> we don't believe they were

targeting those four specifically. just that they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong ti ti time. >> reporter: police say two 14-year-old girls are in critical condition. one of them is in a medically induced coma. a 14-year-old boy has been treated and released from the hospital. as for the suspects -- >> one of our officer who happened to be in the area during the time of the shooting followed the vehicle, lost it temporarily, and found it approximately three or four blox away from the scene of the shooting. >> police called in s.w.a.t. and surrounded the apartment building where the suspects were caught and arrested. the fifth suspect is underage, so police did not release his mug shot. he is a 17-year-old from morgan

hill. >> all of them were known gang members. one is on probation with gang clause. so they are known. they're known between morgan hill or gilroy. >> reporter: police say they've had over gang-related issues in the neighborhoods, which is steps away from a popular park. police say retaliation is a concern, and they have extra patrols out this weekend. kimberly terry, "today in the bay." >> and homicide in morgan hill is rare. the last one happened in 2009. police say that, too, was gang related. and we did talk with the family of tara romero this morning. her sister tells us the family has set up a fund for tara at wells fargo bank. any donations toward her funeral expenses would be greatly appreciated. a memorial service will be held today for a north bay mother who saved her son while they were being swept out to sea. healdsburg's rhiannon hull died

nearly two weeks ago while swimming with her son at a beach in costa rica. a strong rip current pulled them from the shore, and both began to struggle to stay afloat. hull held her son above water long enough until a rescuer came by, but she drowned before she could be pulled in. she is survived by her husband and two sons. the memorial service will be held in healdsburg at 2:00 this afternoon. hayward police are looking for two suspects involved in an early morning hit-and-run crush. they say a car slammed into another vehicle at the intersection of jackson street and soto road just before 6:00 this morning. one female passenger of the struck car was treated for minor injuries. investigators say the two suspects are both female in their late teens to mid-20s. they were last seen climbing over neighborhood fences. singer andy williams has vowed to return to the stage next year despite the fact he has bladder cancer.

the 83-year-old revealed his battle to a crowd as his christmas show at moon river theater in branson, missouri. his appearance last night was a surprise. williams had a string of hits in the 1950s and '60s, including "can't get used to losing you." his recording of "it's the most wonderful time of the year" is a christmas standard and certainly a favorite in many homes. and former heavy weight boxing champ joe frazier is apparently losing his battle with cancer. the 67-year-old was diagnosed with liver cancer four or five weeks ago. he is now in hospice care. his manager says they are hoping for a miracle. frazier, who was known as smoking joe, was the first boxer to bead muhammad ali. that came in a classic 1971 bout. the two boxers would fight twice more with ali winning both.

negotiations continue this morning between the nba and its players union to sign a bargaining agreement and end this five-month long lockout that's driven fans just absolutely nuts. both sides met with a federal mediator over the weekend with the league offering a 51% cut of revenues. the players union rejected that offer, and it has until this wednesday to accept it or they get another offer for just 47%. the players are hoping for at least a 52% cut, which is less than the 57% it got in their last bargaining agreement. nba commissioner david stern has since cancelled all games through the end of the month. much more ahead on "today in the bay." still to come, general motors announces a big recall.rell. what's wrong with its pocsntia. the issue of school dropouts concerns many californians today. even folks who don't have kids in the schools. but what about the quality of education for the kids who remain in school? nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here. i want to talk about how public education is faring here. you have new data. >> this is serious stuff, kris. our children, of course, are our future. they're our future taxpayers. they're our everything. we're not doing well. that's the bottom line here. the state budget, of course, is what's driving this whole thing. it's 1/3 less than it was. that sets the stage. as far as public education goes, it gets 40% of that. it's down 1/3. public education spending is going to be down as well. k through 12 has suffered the most. the greatest loss in public

funding. that's sort of the boilerplate here. >> let's talk about how it translates into the education project. if you have been on campus, you've probably at least heard their classes are bigger. >> yeah, and this has to be a concern to just about everybody. if, again, you're thinking about california's future. the fact s folks, california's near the bottom in just about every category. here's some data. kind of scary in some ways. it's from the national assessment of education. progress. when they show is among 4th grade math students, california now ranks 44th of the 50 states. among 8th grade math students, california's tied for 46th place of the 50 states. it goes on. the results are just as bad in reading. among 4th grade students, california comes in 47th place. if you look at 8th grade students, once again, we're tied for 48th place. so the higher we go, the worse

it gets. mississippi and louisiana are keeping us from the bottom. >> so, you know, when you were putting up those numbers, 44th, 46th, 48th, i thought you were talking about per people spending because i know we're at the bottom there too. is that how we got to this point? >> you're right. it gets back to dollars. it always gets back to dollars. specifically, we're talking about the dollars. the voters are very clear. they do not want to increase the size of the budget. they've said it over and over again. not through taxes or any other way. s so you see what we're doing with the limited number of dollars we have. california ranks 45th among per capita spending for public education. it goes on. california now ranks 45th in the required number of days and hours for public education. why? we're not spending enough money, so you can't be there as long as you'd like to be. if all of this isn't bad enough, one more piece of data just kills it all. that means that california now ranks 50th, dead last, in the

pupil-teacher ratio. most education experts say if you got to look at one statistic, one way of evaluating public education, you want to see how many kids there are in the classroom relative to the teacher. yes, we rank last. >> okay. this is not to say that teachers aren't doing a great job, that educators aren't trying the best they can, and students and parents aren't pulling their weight. this is really about funding. let's talk about the fallout. >> you're right. what do you get out of those policies down the road? we pay a steep price. we are paying a significant price down the road for these cutbacks. look, our education products, if you l have to compete with the education products of just about every place else. that's what happens. what we're seeing is with these kinds of outcomes, these performances on test, they're not going to stand up well to the education products of just about every other state. now, this just doesn't bode well for us in the workplace. after all, we need our kids to get out of school.

election commission shows that so far obama supporters in california has donated more than $10 million to his re-election campaign. in fact, during the president's last funds raising trip to san francisco, donors pitched in about $1.5 million in less than three hours. the front runner for the gop presidential nomination is blasting the media after attending a recent debate. herman cain was in texas last night for a two-man debate with newt gingrich. after the event, he attacked what he calls the nitpicking media over allegations of actual harassment a decade ago. none of the questions asked during the debate talked about the surrounding controversy. instead, they focused on the hot-button issues. >> we must go from an entitlement society to an empowerment society. >> it starts with the idea, if you haven't earned your pay today, why do you think we're going to pay you? >> the event was sponsored by the texas-based tea party group.
