that reward for helping solve the peninsula has more than tripled thanks to public support. the humane society says the reward is now more than $8,400. they are looking for the person who tied -- around a cat's neck and tossed it into the lagoon. that's sick. vets say the animal was alive at the time. anybody with information about or who committed the crime is asked to contact the peninsula humane society. >> occupy style protests are spreading to higher education. they will walk out of class today. what happened is professors and lectures with the cal state university system will be walking out today and tomorrow

to express their frustration with the people running the university system. so they'll walk out and picket to try to stop a strike they hoped is coming up on november 17th because of chancellor charles reid's decision to cancel raises. the faculty say the stunlts are board. they're upset over higher student fees and cutting classes. tuition jumped 25% this year and last. they're hardly representing the 1%. they're saying the state funding was cut drastically and there could be more to come. the walkout will only last a few hours today. but it's at 10:00 at cal state schools including san francisco

state. a dozen more tomorrow at san jose state and cal state where we are. i'm christie smith. back to you guys in the studio. closing arguments in the trial of a suspected gang member who spot shot a frooe mopt police officer. andrew is charged with attempted murder and other felons. in august of 2010 he opened fire on officer todd young in oakland. he took the stand in the trial telling the jury he thought he would die after chasing him. he pointed a gun at him from 15 feet away and started shooting. he's still in rehab and facing one more surgery. the man who shot a sheriff's deptty is expected in court to give his plea. he was stopped in cupertino in

august, for acting suspiciously. he allegedly tried to run and they were turned, pointing a gun at the deputy. that's when the deputy opened fire, injuring him. turns out that gun was a bb gun. changes could be coming in east bay commuters. a community meeting will be held tonight at the kennedy center. they will provide more information about the projts. it really hasn't been used since. more questions regarding the safety of pge pipelines after the same pipeline in san bruno ruptured again. this time it happened near a test. bob redell joins us live on the peninsula with the latest. >> good morning to you.

this is a gas transmission line that runs north and south. we're at now in stran. they are supposed to dig up and replace the three-foot section that ruptured yesterday afternoon along 280. they're supposed to do that in the next few hours. when it ruptured it caused a mud slide that shut down 280 near here for a short time. when they do the tests, they flush the pipelines with water removing the gases. they pressurize it. this was built in 1947. it's quite old. they are using very old pipelines. they believe the rupture yesterday was debted previously by a backhoe. some are still looking into.

they think that was the cause. last thursday they found a pinhole size leak. the exact location is still unknown. the utility didn't do pressure testing for years. that has changed over a year ago in september of last year. that pipeline erupted, exploded in the san bruno neighborhood, killing eight people, leveling 38 homes. since then pg&e says they'll be trying to test 150 miles of transition lines by year end. >> we're excavating the area further. we're going to cut out the ruptured portion of the pipe, replace it with new pipe and conduct the pressure test. >> pg&e will construct the tests through the end of november. then they'll shut down for the wintertime. it's going to be getting cold out here as we are well aware of. people will need the gas in their lines to heat the homes.

welcome back, everyone. a live look outside san francisco this morning. 5:22. one of two men involved in a shooting on san francisco's market street back in june will be in court to hear his fate. 18-year-old is expected to be sentenced to probation this morning in connection to a shooting that injured five people. blaine and a 16-year-old boy were involved in gun play two miles from the paint saturday celebration. he pleaded guilty to weapons charge, telling prosecutors he did not, however, fire his gun. the 16-year-old boy accused of shooting the five people, he has denied charges. he will be in court at the end of the month.

shane bauer, sarah shourd and josh fattal spoke at amnesty international conference in los angeles yesterday. bauer telling them the three were lucky to have the support of a strong community who kept a spotlight on their cause. the three were arrested back in 2009 while hiking along the iraq/iran border. all three were living in oakland since their release. >> today will be the first full day of trading for the newest stock, groupon. the their holder ls will profit or lose. today we'll see how many people are the short who will hold onto

dispensaries in san jose, clinics like this one where we are this morning, this is the all-american cannabis club. they've been worried about getting shut down by the city of san jose. it is happening statewide in a federal crackdown. so today they are fighting back. patients, landlords and representatives. they are set to file suit against a federal government today. they're joining forces in san francisco to announce their lawsuit. what they're asking for, an immediate halt to the statewide crackdown on co-ops, property owners and businesses that support them. recently the u.s. department of justice announced it would shut down what u.s. attorneys called a profit-making industry. and many dispensaries statewide received a threatening letter from federal prosecutors saying they are violating federal law and now subject to possible prosecution. so medical marijuana advocates are filing suit, demanding this

crackdown stops. this is all happening while pot clinics in san jose are fighting to stay open here. there are more than 100 of them. you may recall the city council recently voted to limit the number of dispensaries to ten. advocates fought back. they got enough signatures to petition this. now the issue remains in limbo. voters could end up deciding the fate of pot clinics. advocates will be in san francisco this morning. they'll make the announcement at an 11:00 press conference. jon? >> marla tellez in san jose, thank you. this morning flowers, candles and balloons at the site where a teenage girl was killed in a drive-by shooting. she just left a birthday party with friends on friday night when the gunman shot her and two other teens. two 14-year-old girls are still in critical condition. a teenage boy was treated and

released for a leg wound. officers followed the getaway car and arrested five suspected gang members. the family of the teenage girl who was killed set up a fund for her as well as fargo. donations will help pay for her funeral. >> it is 5:31. police rigt now are looking for two masked men responsible for a weekend armed robbery spree. officers say the men robbed them around 8:50 saturday night. the men demand money at gunpoint and took off. then two men in ski masks took as much as $600 at gunpoint. fortunately nobody was hurt. three people shot in oakland over the weekend. all are expected to survive their injuries. one person was shot in the chest around 9:30. earlier in the morning two people were shot in east oakland. it happened just after 12:30. well, an illegal street race

it's up this hill near farm hill. that section shut it down for a short time. they've been conducting hydro status pressure tests. they purge the gas from the line to see how it olds. the utility says the point of rupture was dented. now just last thursday pg&e revealed a leak along the same line in palo alto. that section was installed in 1947 which critics say is a big part of the problem. now this line, line 132. a 24-inch transmission line that runs through san francisco is the same one that exploded in

is over. he is done talking about sexual harassment allegations. he will not answer more questions about it. is that the fastest way to put this controversy behind him? tracey pothsz is live in washington with the latest. >> republican strategists say, no, it's not a good strategy. he needs to get everything on the table. all the questions about what happened, how he handled it. what may not have happened. then he can truly get this behind him. the i'm not going to answer any questions strategy is not going to work for him. funds raising is working. the campaign raised $2 million in the last week since this broke. all of last summer he raise 2d$.8 million. just this week while accused of sexual harassment allegations he raised $2 million. other opponents say it's time to move on from this.

grew overnight. two high ranking officials resigned. they'll be arraigned in court today. the former athletic director tim curly and gary schultz face perjury charges. they're accused of investigating the sexual abuse allegations against former defense coordinator jerry sandusky. he's accused of a abusing eight boys over a 15-year period. >> fire invest gays trying to figure out what caused a deadly fire. it swept through the residential facility in marion on saturday night, danging half the structure. five residents were killed. a sixth remains in critical condition. some facility employees and police officers suffered smoke inhalation. several federal agents sent in to help this investigation. in the facility. they provide care for developlily disabled adults. >> want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina

right around the exit. i'll give you a better look at that in a report. meanwhile let's get a live look at the bay bridge. a few more cars. now a stackup in the cash lanes. still not enough to trigger the metering lights. the upper deck moves smoothly into san francisco. back to you. >> it is 5:47. a disturbing new study finds sexual harassment is widespread in schools across the country. the more than association for university women surveyed 2,000 students nationwide in grades 7 through 12. 48% of students said they experience some sort of sexual harassment. in person, online or through texts. many students admitted to harassing others thought it was no big deal. the majority of students thought it was a very big deal. so big they reported feeling six or skipping class. >> facebook bickering is escalating to face-to-face brawls at one east bay school. according on the contra costa times. administrators are asking

participants to mononor what their teens post online. great idea. tough to execute. the school's principal says out of nine on campus fights in the first five weeks of school, at least seven of them started on facebook. 15 students were suspended in the brawls. the school planning a facebook 101 seminar for parents who want to learn to monitor their teens online activity. 5:48. candidates for san francisco's next mayor have started the final full day of campaigning. it's the first time the city is using voting to elect the mayor. it's tough for voter who is have 16 candidates to choose from. political experts say it's unlikely one candidate will receive a majority of first-choice votes. which means there could be multiple rounds. some of the candidates are concerned about the ranked choice voting itself. >> well, the main thing that i've been hearing is the confusion that the primary choice might be diluted somehow. with not understanding how the second or third would be counted. that confusion bothers me.

i think it bothers the other candidates, too. >> we have a huge number of folk who is are undecided. many folks are not aware there's an election on fuse. so you add rank choice voting to that. it adds to the confusion. >> with so many candidates there's no way that the first round is going to cheaf a 50 plus one result. so it's going to take a number of different rounds. with that it gives us a tremendous boost of being the winner at the end of the day. don received more first-place vot votes. if you're keeping score at home, we've reached the half way point of the season. and, yes, the 49ers just smashing expectations. they just keep on winning. they win it 19-11. san francisco, check this out.

when they hit the shops or pay their own price. they are considering a measure to require all local stores to charge an extra dime for every disposable bag. the could would go up 25 cents per bag. they already banned the use of plastic bags in big grocery stores and chain formsies. so bring your own bags. new poll finds americans are not happy with wall street or the occupy wall street protests. a pool from the university of massachusetts found 35% of those surveyed had a favorable impression of the occupy movement. last month an associated press poll showed 37% for occupy. wall street itself had the worst rating in the poll. only 16% had a favorable impression of wall street and those big corporations. all the people interested in making money from wall street, probably won't.
