up. i'll tell you when the rain comes back to play. that's on the way as well at 6:00 a.m. first let's get you on your way to work. >> a lot of cars on their way as well. held up because of a new accident westbound 205 at the 580 merge that may ease things a little bit coming through livermore. we already have the slowing all the way over towards the dublin interchange. so 20 minute drive and building. this could shift things. >> thank you very much, mike. it is election day in several day area cities will be choosing new mayors. perhaps the most closely watched mayoral race will be in san francisco. christie smith joins us live in san francisco. they face off against 15 challenges for the tom seat in the city. good morning. >> good morning, laura. voters here in san francisco. they will community groups. the city has their own monitors. the california secretary of state's office will be sending

election monitors here as well. this was something requested by the challengers to mayor ed lee. exactly how many are coming is unclear. the challenges to the interim mayor asked for the extra set of eyes when allegations surfaced that a group may have engaged in some sort of voter fraud. they welcome the observers to ensure the integrity of the elections. 15 challengers. many already in office. very well known. the city attorney. just to name a few. the elections director says these extra monitors are not new for san francisco. they've had them before. the first for many will be the ranked choice voting system used to pick a mayor. it could make the outcome

unpredictable. >> there's no run-off election. it proeshlly reduced costs. it was seen as a method to allow nontraditional candidates, to give them a greater chance to win in office. >> in another twist, david chiu's campaign office was broken into. no suspects have been named. the election department say they're ready to go. they have 409 polling places ready to go. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith. back to you. >> let's hope the folks come out to vote. >> pg&e is still fixing the the gas line ch that's the process of pushing wearpt through the pipes at very high pressure levels. the utility says the repair line could be back upand running

by the end of the month. they ran high pressure water through it to see if it would hold. the accident killed eight people. pg&e says it looks like the pipe was damaged after it was hit with a backhoe. it will replace that section of the pipe and retest it before putting it back online. a san francisco murder case will go on despite missing grand jury transcripts from a court reporter. a judge decided not to throw out the case against the suspects accused in the death of a german tourist. prosecutors said the suspects will rival gang members, targeting each other when the woman was shot by a stray bullet. the court reporter has not delivered transcripts because of a health issue. the judge said there's still time to get the transcripts done before the trial starts in december. the city of san jose continues to grapple with a

spike in gang violence. it's also being recognized for past success in the fight against gangs. the gang task force just returned from a nationwide national forum on youth violence in washington, d.c. her using san jose as an example to other cities with bigger gang problems. they came back with new goals. crediting a re-entry plan from a jail or juvenile hall and creating more public partnership ls. >> a parolee accused in the san francisco high profile killing is due in court this morning. gary scott holland is accused of kill lg him last october. investigators say holland dressed up as a pg&e workers and convinced him to let him in to check for a gas leak. . he's being charged with the murder. holland's attorneys says she expects her compliant to plead guilty to the charges in exchange for a life sentence.

san jose city leaders could make a move to bring the oakland a's to the south bay. marla tellez is live in san jose with a look at a private land sale scene what's at stake. >> reporter: good morning. they've been talking about this for a couple of years now. today the conversation continues. right where we are standing, this is where the stadium would be built. today the city council will meet to talk about the proposed land sale that could have them moving to the south bay. on the agenda today, the need to get public feedback. voters will have the final say. they'll talk about setting up a public hearing. the sale would total five acres

along south montgomery street between west san fernando and park avenue. less than a couple of weeks ago san jose leaders came forward with a steal of an offer for the a's. they proposed selling the five acres for $7 million the a's owner says they will not buy the land unless major league baseball allows them to relocate. the city is offering a two-year option for $50,000 to hold the land until a decision is made by bud selig. this is also u up for consideration. they are considering whether the governor's move to take away redevelopment money from cities statewide is unconstitutional. this is relevant in that without that money, the city of san jose will not be able to complete some -- and that could jeopardize the land sales to the oakland a's.

it is 6:12. this morning there's word a fifth person could come forward with allegations against presidential candidate herman cain. cain denies all claims of sexual harassment levelled against him. despite saying he's done talking about it, he says he'll hold a press kompx today to set the record straight. yesterday a woman said cain offered her a job in exchange for sec. cain went on jimmy kimmel live. he said he and his staff will watch the press conference together in a san francisco hotel. >> they can see steam coming out of my ears. and the feelings that you have when you know that all of this is totally fabricated. >> now the washington examiner reports, again unconfirmed, that a fifth woman says she had an uncomfortable dinner with cain back in 2002 and he stuck her

and her friends with an $800 bill. it is 6:13. there's a small shakeup in the white house. chief of staff bill daly is handing over his daily duties. this comes after h he's trying to shore up relations with republicans. many see him as too a divisive figure. he already says he plans to return to chicago with his wife after the election. >> the time right now to check out weather with christina loren. sounds like we had sunshine before the rain sets in, huh? >> yeah, the calm before the next storm. and then we've got yet another storm to deal with as we head through the weekend. but what we're watching for right now is possiblily record breaking low temperatures this morning. now napa, the record is 32 degrees. that was set back in 1918. the early 1900s. it's not be this cold on this date since early 1900s.

we're expecting to break the record. we're already at freezing in fairfield sh santa rosa, gilroy is one degree above. temperatures will be warmer today. so a frosty start. we're talking the best weather of the week if you're looking for sunshine or warmer conditions. at the end of the week showers move through. watch out for ice over your bridges and overpasses. frost advisory in place for a good reason until 9:00 a.m. your highs are warmer. i bumped you up 5 to 8 degrees in concord. 62 today. 63 in fremont. 65 in san jose with a lot of sunshine coming in for the first part of the day. that will last through tonight. and tomorrow the clouds increase as onshore flow resumes as the cut-awe low sneaks in from the south.

this is a tricky forecast. it looks like the center of low pressure will remain offshore. we'll see bands of rain moving in at the coastline in particular. a lot of models say it will turn stationary. we could get a lot of rainfall at the coast late thursday all the way through saturday. we'll be able to pinpoint those for her through wednesday. i'll have a good handle on the exact timing of the storm. something i really like to do. so i'll keep watching that for you. if you have outdoor plans, 11-11-11. stay tuned to the forecast. things could get dicey. >> it's getting crowded in the south bay. northbound 101 starts the slow zone. coming up north of 680, 280, the interchange towards 880 and the parkway. a new accident here in the

northbound direction. that's where the start for the slowing should kick in right there passing by capitol as well. livermore. still out of the altamont pass. a 20-minute drive registering slow in through livermore. now speeds are just a tad bit better towards the dublin interchange. still it's a slower drive. we'll get live looks to see how things are shaping up. wee see more taillights northbound. speeds dipping to the upper 50s in some spots. especially by the coliseum and then downtown. still a 17 or 16 minute drive up to the toll plaza. there's the backup. the metering lights still turned up. filled in as far as the screen goes to the 880 and continuing to build. back to you. >> thank you very much. this morning we prove sometimes it's a good thing to have your head in the sky.

bob redell is at the space and science center. you're not wearing a helmet. >> reporter: i don't have to duck yet. this isn't expected to come close until 3:30. it's a large asteroid. 1,000 feet wide by some estimates. or the equivalent of three football fields. i came up with that on my own. conrad young is an astronomer here at the space and science center. do we need to get our affairs in order? >> not this time. we'll all be fine. >> how close will it be coming to planet earth? >> about 200,000 miles. >> which is a buzz cut. >> yes. >> but there's no reason to think this would take a left or right hand turn and slam into us. it's going to keep ongoing?

>> it will keep ongoing. it will make for an interesting show for stargazers. you have your 36-inch telescope here. people can come here tonight. what would we see? >> it will look like a star slowly drifting among the stars itself. >> from an astronomer point of view, if i had my telescope at home, would i be able to see it with that? >> you should be able to. you have to know where to look. are we going to learn anything we didn't know about the heavenly objects in the sky when it comes past earth tonight? >> astronomers are trying to answer those questions.

there's an observatory in puerto rico, taking radar observations of the asteroid to make more accurate measurements of the size. it's actually called 2005 -- wu. a very large rock that will give us a buzz cut. not going to slam into us. people may want to start showing up. they'll have the big telescopes pointed to the sky. >> thank you very much. looking dapper in that monochromatic. >> got his own buzz cut working, too. 6:20 now.

san francisco this morning who says that having extra monitors in the san francisco election is frankly not all that unusual. again, the state oversight came at the request of several mayoral candidates after allegations surfaced just last month of the independent group supporting lee may have engaged in some sort of voter fraud. his camp has distanced themselves from the group and activity. and said they welcome the oversight to maintain the integrity of this election. as you said, 15 challengers in this race. some of them already hold an office ranked choice voting being used this time as well. as for the extra monitor, the elections deemt is spartment is they basically welcome it. >> to me it's an extra set of eyes and ears. if there's election rigging going on, if the polling places is locked in the morning, it's a chance to hear about it. i don't think it's a negative thing at all. >> and in another twist, right

and at sonoma state university from 7:30 to 9:45 this morning. in the meantime t yunon that represents the professors librarians and coaches voted to strike on november 17th. that means classes will be canceled for tens of thousands of students at csu's east bay campus. the faculty union has been at odds with the university management for years now. this is the first time the union ever approved a strike. we could learn if san jose leaders are reprepared to step up to the plate to bring the a's down south. if the a's move to south bay, they'll be named with the san jose sharks. that's the set up shop where we are this morning. directly behind me. this is hp pavilion. just a couple of blocks away. to my right, the cal train station.

today the city council will meet with the development authority to talk about the proposed land sale that could have the oakland a's moving to the south bay. they'll talk about establishing a public hearing. the tale would total five acres along south montgomery street between west san fernando and park avenue. today they'll talk about how the sale could clean up the area, primarily industrial and not very neighborhood friendly. a couple weeks ago san jose leaders came out ready to offer the a's a major league discount. they propose selling the five acres for 7 million, which is just a quarter of what the city paid to buy it. now the a's owner said the organization will not buy the land unless major league baseball allows the a's to relocate to san jose. so they will hold the land until

if passed it will declare a fertilized human egg, banning almost all abortions. this initiative is not one of a kind. >> they're calling it the person hood intishive. it would ban not only abortions collected by mothers, but those in the case of rape, incest. for the mother's health. some types of birth control. like the morning after pill. it would prevent researchers from destroying embryos in laboratories. both the democrats and the republicans support it the republicans are the cochair of the group. this could end up in a long and expensive court battle. for now groups that are women's health organizations. the doctors say it could be dangerous. not for only women's rights, but

so i know each eye piece has different magnitudes. where is it going to look like? how fast will it travel? >> it will be a star like object moving among the stars. the rate of motion will will be travel about the distance of the moon in five or six minutes. fast enough this would be different. >> that's true. >> you're part of a network of astronomers that keep tracks of object like this. this one we'll be okay with. >> the ones we know about, we don't have to worry about.

frazier, of course, will be remembered and always linked with mohammed ali. the rivalry transcending the world of sports and capturing global attention. especially in madison square guard garden, 1971. frazier beat ali. they are also part of the thriller in manila. i remember it well. ali issuing a statement saying the world has lost a great champion. joe frazier is 67 years old. cheney will be the keynote speaker at an asian invement conference at the palace hotel. he'll share his views on the political state of the world, as well as his personal reflections on his role in the white house. several groups will be protesting, demanding his arrest.
