up tomorrow morning f you're sleeping in, by the time you walk out the front door at 7:00 or 8:00 we'll have clear sky over the bay area. we're expecting fog on sunday. typically happens whenever we pick up the moisture and high pressure moves in, compressing the moisture. but for today we want to get you to work safely. we have more action on the way at the coast. and we have the weekend forecast locked and loaded. let's check the roadways with mike. >> the roadways are a big concern for the morning commute. we watch 580 where we have the accident. over the last five minutes asaw this section approaching. showed good slow down. it just cleared up over the last two minutes. they may have moved the cars off the freeway. they were blocking the fast line. it's a friday, a wet one. it could be a problem for the peninsula especially. >> got to be careful. we'll check back with you in a little bit calls to break up a group of protesters are growing louder and louder.

christie smith is live in oakland where a deadly shooting is forcing the hand of city leaders. that's especially true for embattled mayor quan. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you. the feeling among the demonstrators is they may be forced out sooner rather than later because of this horrible shooting that happened steps away from the plaza where they have their encampment set up. clearly that hasn't happened this morning. what is different is oakland police are here. they were told to keep a distance before. and demonstrators are trying to stress the shooting in broad daylight of a young man is not tied to them. though they are saying a couple of them that there are a number of fights in the encampment yesterday. they believe the victim may have volunteered here a few times before. mayor quan is calling for the demonstrators to leave peacefully after a raid last

month. then the demonstrators came back. at least one council member is trying to push a no confidence vote for the handling of all this. one demonstrator thinks the city will move in soon. it says they are two separate things. >> when shall be comes out behind a bathroom and shoots you six times it's not behind a movement. our movement is nonviolent. we don't condone violence. it has nothing to do with the movement. >> meantime a memorial, candle light memorial is set up here for the victim a t 14th and broadway. the bay citizen is now reporting if oakland police start another eviction operation, they may have a tough time recruiting outside law enforcement help who are frankly saying that they're tired of having to go into oakland and help them remove

people only to have the demonstrators allowed back in. they would come in the event of an emergency. >> christie smith, thank you for the report. >> speaking of oakland a group of veterans plan to march in oakland to protest what they call police brutality. they're marching in spoth of an iraq war veteran who says police clubbed him during a standoff on november 3rd. a south bay marine killed in afghanistan will be remembered in a memorial service held in san jose today. the 31-year-old staff sergeant graduated back in 1998. he was killed while attempting to disarm a bomb. his memorial service, which is open to the public, will be held at noon tomorrow at the jubilee

christian center in san jose. cities will hold events for veterans day today. they will kick off a fund-raiser at safeway and dublin. they will hold a special performance for veterans at the health center. they will host a veterans day ceremony at 11:00. santa clara will hold a ceremony to honor veterans at 3:00 p.m. in central park. is judge is throwing brakes on a plan. marla tellez is live with more on the reasons why and the impacts on commuters.

>> laura, good morning, this is not the first time the plan has been halted. it's been an ongoing battle for three years now. now in question is the high speed rail train. that could still one day share tracks with cal train. including those here at the station in san jose. despite yesterday's ruling the california high speed rail authority says it's not giving up. yesterday the judge ruled the authority failed to show how it would affect homes on the peninsula and in the south bay. the peninsula route has to be scrapped all together until that happens. the plan was to have them run up the peninsula into san francisco at the cost of $99 billion to california taxpayers. yesterday's ruling says the authority must study how traffic deep in the south bay would be

impacted. also how lane closures on the peninsula would affect commuters. on the california high speed rail authority website this morning in response to this setback, the chairman says in part, quote, with a new business plan in review i am hopeful we can move forward. ultimately if this would run from l.a. to up here in san francisco. that trip would take two hours and 40 minutes. we are still way off from that happening. laura? >> thank you for the update. a lot of expecting mothers are hoping their baby's birthdays will be today. that's a lot of pressure on the kid to get out. the good samaritan hospital, and a lot of pressure on the mom. they have four times as many mom ls scheduled to deliver babies than usual.

impersonators are ready. >> we have good showers coming down. for the time being we're going to get a little bit of a break. right now rich monday is getting a little bit of rain. there is more on the way yochlt you can see the deep moisture band starting to move in. you look at the left hand side of your screen. 7:45, places like san mateo getting significant rainfall from this band, which is getting closer and closer by the minute. we'll show you what's happening. we have a core of low pressure cut off from the jet stream. continuing to circulate and move south. as it digs south, it's pushing a moisture band up at the coastline. not expecting rain inland. but the coast could get pounded for three or four hours at 8:00 a.m. lasting all the way throughout the afternoon. even in the evening hours get more rain as the moisture band

moves onshore. it's significant. still 40 miles from the peninsula. 100 miles for the eastern portion of san jose. this is what we're looking out throughout the day today. we're going to get significant accumulations. especially south of san mateo. we are watching for puddling and ponding. they will come down at 9:00 a.m. that's when it will get active around here. from san francisco to redwood city. los gatos. we'll tell you what that means for inland cities as well as the sierra nevada a little snowfall is coming down. so far a light volume of traffic. it's friday and a holiday for many. the disabled truck, a big rig blocking one lane.

paterno's representatives are right now reaching out to a prominent criminal defense attorney. the same attorney who represented former president george h.w. bush during the iran controversy hearings. paterno does not face charges in the case. the man at the center of the scandal, jerry sandusky could face more charges. the dooim released by prosecutors earlier this week says sandusky took a boy to that city for a game in 1999. >> 6:15 now. time to check in with christina loren. she's watching the storm coming our way. this is a pretty significant area of low pressure. all the meteorologists across the bay area. what will this cut-off low do. will we see rain from it? the answer is obviously yes. the biggest bone of contention that we have right now is whether or not this big band of

moisture will make its way inland. i don't think it's going to happen. what i think will happen is it's going to set up shop over the peninsula all the way up to ma rin county. heavy rain on the way. we're timing it out for you this morning. it will reach san mateo by 7:45 elsewhere. by that time we'll see a lot of the action wind down. if you're waking up with us near the coast, get ready for heavy rain all day long. it comes to a close and heads off to the east. it continues to dig south. that's pumping up the moisture at the coastline. this doesn't have anywhere to go. so this thing will fizzle out fast. we could pick up anywhere between half an inch to three quarters of ang inch in the cities with the most rainfall. you can see the deep green and

yellow embedded in here. that's moderate rain on the way to the bay area. we continue to track the storm for you all morning long. i can tell you we'll see the most moisture from san mateo south along the peninsula. 17 very dangerous conditions as we wake up tomorrow morning dealing with the aftermath there. inland cities will hit the 70s with sunshine coming in. it's going to take time for moisture to make its way inland. i don't think it will maintain organization all that much at this point. san jose could pick up to a quarter inch. we're talking heavy accumulations at the coast. a mix of sun and clouds. 58 degrees near the water. monday looking nice and sunny. mid 60s inland. 60 in san francisco. is we do have fair weather back

john chung says california has fallen $1.5 billion behind in revenue in the first four months of the fiscal year. add it up and more than $3 billion in the hole. under the budget signed in june, if california is between $1 billion and $2 billion short, there will be cuts. if it's more than $2 billion short fund willing be cut to k-12 education and community colleges. a number of high-tech free speech issues making news this week. scott mcgrew joins us with details and insight. if you run a really big high-tech company you want to fly under the radar. you want to do what you want

without a lot of regulation. facebook is the the latest to get caught on government radar. the fdc will force facebook to get user approval before making changes to their profiles as part of a government settlement. facebook makes changes all the time. under the settlement you have to opt-in. this hamstrings facebook. a federal judge has ruled twitter has to hand over user information to help the government the judge says you're not entitled to privacy over your ip address. that's the data your computer sends out that says you can find me here on the internet. this is a big deal. if you have an iphone or ipad, apple sent out an update to the ios, the operating system.

good morning. happy veterans day to you. it is 6:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. we want to find out about our friday forecast. a little rain and then it's nice. >> a little rain if you're inland. a lot of rain on the peninsula or the city of san francisco. take a look at what's headed our way. a deep band of moisture slated to arrive in the city by 7:26 this morning. that will hit froo mont at 8:11 this morning. that's when it will start to get active. after the band comes onshore we could be dealing with steady rainfall for three or four hours, potential flooding. we'll tell you where. skiers and snowboarders, it's the time of year you want a ski report. 6:31. first, let's check your drive with mike. >> about 7:30, 8:00, that's when 880 is jammed up past the coliseum. a live look shows you things are pretty nice right now.

it's a vacation friday for a lot of folks. so extra light. but we just saw the southbound side with the headlights. have a traffic slowdown because of a caravan of flashing lights heading southbound. nothing scheduled from cal-tran. it looks like they're moving a large trail ter through the area. i'll show you the rest of the back up. the pattern is different today. >> because of the holiday as well. it is 6:32. crowds are breaking up the encampment, growing louder after a deadly shooting close to the camp. christie smith is live in oakland this morning. christie, the occupy group is distancing itself from the violence. it may be the action that really forces the city's hands on this one. >> reporter: demonstrators are worried about it. they are leaving candles and writing notes for the man who was shot and killed here yesterday in broad dlt.

five or six shots fired right over there. and if steve can pan over, you can see how close that was to the occupy oakland encampment that is still here this morning. now as you said, they're stressing that there is not a tie between the shooting and the movement, but they feel that one will be made. this morning they tell us that there were some fights in the encampment yesterday. and there are still more than 100 tents out here this morning. they're telling me the victim may have volunteered here before. many on the city council have made it clear they want to pull the plug on the encampment that's been here since october 10th. mayor quan who called in police to trade the camps and allowed another to return is calling on them to leave. she wants the camp to end. but how and wednesday that might happen is anyone's guess. one demonstrator described the

feeling in the camp now. >> the movement in the camp was now something will really happen. they'll take this place apart now. this is what they've been waiting for. this is the mood. they've been waiting for this to happen, and what happened was things got out of focus over here. >> now occupiers, we've seen at least a dozen of them keep returning to the candle light memorial. and if oakland police decide to move in again, they may actually have some trouble getting help from outside law enforcement agencies. at least according to the bay citizen. some outside agencies saying they can't afford to keep moving police officers in for raids and demonstrations if the city ultimately allows them to just come back and set up again. of course, they're saying they would help in the event of an emergency. reporting live, christie smith, jon and laura, back to you. over in san francisco the occupy movement seems to have worn out its welcome. business owners at the ferry

building at justin herman plaza tell the san francisco examiner they've seen a spike in shoplifting and break-ins. the managers say there are reports of occupiers using the buildings restrooms as washrooms. and some taking sponge baths in the restrooms. managers say they tried to get police to crack down on the the protesters but the city has not acted on those requests. if you're in antioch, you may be waking up without power after a woman crashed her suv into a fire hydrant and a utility pole. the woman was pinned inside her car on east 18th street for about an hour and a half. before she was finally pulled out. during the rescue pg&e turned off power as a precaution. the bay area has two first-place team this is morning. the raiders moved ahead of the pack with a win over the

chargers. carson palmer threw for two touchdowns. michael bush rushed for a season high, 157 yards. the raiders now have 3-1 record on the road this season and 2-3 at home. san diego police are looking for a suspect in a stabbing at a parking lot after that game. two men started fighting after the game. one stabbed the other. the victim is expected to survive, but so far it's not cooperating with police. police say it does not look like the fight had anything to do with the rivalry between fans. south bay and peninsula commuters will have to wait la little bit longer now for a new faster way to get around. a judge putting brakes on the plan to bring a bullet tray line through the peninsula. more twoon bay area cities and the states. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. the battle has been ongoing for three years now. it's not over yet.

the high speed rail train could still share tracks with cal-train, including those here at the station. despite yesterday's ruling, the california high speed rail authority says it isn't giving up. yesterday a judge ruled the authorities failed to show how the route would affect traffic and homes on the peninsula and in the south bay. until this happened the judge ruled the peninsula route has to be scrapped. the plan to ultimately have the high speed train run from gilroy to san francisco at cost of $99 billion to california taxpayers. most riders in favor of train. what they don't like is the monumental price tag. >> it's too much traffic. like i said, i was born and raised here. trying to get out of the bay area on a friday takes hours and hours.

the area of low pressure is digging in from the south. for us, that means not a lot of action inland. probably the most moisture from san mateo through santa cruz. this is what we're forecasting for today. throughout the next 45 minutes, the system of low pressure will continue to dig south. as we head throughout 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., lit be very active at the coast. your highs will be comfortable inland today. areas expecting the most moisture will really struggle to mike it out of the 50s. so we'll get to the forecast coming up at 6:39. we're tracking storms for you. i can tell you when they do arrive. places like concord and livermore coming up. >> we're fortunate it's a vacation friday for a lot of

this morning a big time push to get war vets back to work. tracie potts is live in washington to tell us about this. good morning, tracie. >> good morning. jon. here's the problem. in many parts of the country including california it's harder for veterans to get a job than everyone else. the unemployment rate is 11.9%. half a point higher for vaet rans at 9/11. congress is trying to do something about that. democrats and republicans have teamed up and agreed on part of

president obama's job plan that would provide tax breaks for companies that hired these veterans. particularly up to 5600 for hiring veterans up to six months or more. also doubling the current tax breaks for hiring disabled tax breaks. 10,000 for each veteran hired. almost 10,000. this would provide money for training, career counseling, community colleges, tech schools so the veterans are better suited for the jobs available out there. it would be paid for by fees on loans that are backed home loans. mortgages backed by the veterans administration. bottom line, it's expected to pass the house later next week. it is 6:44. a veterans group says more and

pushing a deep band of moisture along the coast, so as we head throughout the next couple of hours, starting to get dice sigh around here. could pick up half an inch to an inch of rainfall before we wake up saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. the good news is as we wake up tomorrow morning, we'll see a good amount of clearing. things are looking good for us. temperatures today rather comfortable. inland not expecting much rain. probably one-tenth or less. 59 in san francisco with limited sunshine throughout the day. probably on and off showers through 10:00 p.m. 61 in redwood cities. 62 in los gatos today. your seven day outlook shows you through the weekend we are going to see comfortable temperatures sunday and monday. 60s inland and upper 50s at the coast. however, it will be dry so you'll be able to get outdoors. the other good news i have to bring to the table this morning is we are going to see a nice fair stretch of weather starting next monday, lasting the through next thursday. very seasonal for this time of

year inland. then at the coast the upper 50s, low 60 rz, and a mix of sun and clouds. let's check your drive with mike. despite some wet roads in the forecast that you have a lighter volume of traffic helping things out. the south bay, we are looking at southbound 680 at the top of your screen. the big rig there still blocking your slow lane. right here, northbound 101 at julien, there's an accident. that's off on the shoulder, but it's adding to the distraction. so from capital past the accident to about sjc, the airport, we have some slowing here as well. parade in down town san jose today. veterans day parade. reroutes for traffic and eventually for transit as well as throughout the midday. here at the lower bay shore. 101 and 84 coming across the water. and 280, no problems. at the limit between here and san francisco. both directions. the north bay, look hat this, travel times are looking really nice. no interruptions. a smooth drive in novato down through san rafael to the city. where there's also a parade on

and they are distancing the movement from having anything to do with this shooting, but they also are telling me this morning that the victim may have volunteered here. now mayor quan is saying now that it is time for the camp to go. she wants them to leave voluntarily. at this point what the demonstrators are telling us is they believe that the city will be moving in soon. that's the latest from here. reporting live in oakland. i'm christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you very much, christie. it is 6:51. lawyers for the occupy oakland lawyers hit by a car during the group's strike. we'll talk about that incident today. the protesters say they were marching the through an intersection in downtown oakland on november 2nd when a car tried to cross through. two protesters stopped in front of the car and they started banging on the hood. the driver then tried to go around the protesters, but ended

up hitting them. this afternoon their lawyers will hold a news conference at jack london square. well, protesters down in los angeles have plans to occupy the rose bowl parade in january. anti-wall street protesters planning to set up encampment ls along the parade route. in san pasadina. they hope to get a worldwide television audience. they hope to march with a massive human float in the parade. it's scheduled for monday, january 2nd. more and more american who is fought in the vietnam war are returning to the country for the visit. it's according to a veterans group we spoke with. bob redell is live with a traveling vietnam wall matter in cupertino. bob, i know this story hits home for you and so many others. >> good morning, laura. the there are over 58,000 names listed on the wall. some of whom my own father served with, and as you're about to see, this helps explain why he decided to make his own return trip to vietnam a place

that other veterans would rather forget. >> this is the vietnam i remember. >> reporter: this is not the vietnam bob redell left. this time on his return, no guns, no enemy, no fear of death. >> coming back to say good-bye to the guys we lost, but also to look and just see what is left,. >> reporter: vietnam is remarkable in her beauty, which makes the horror and devastation that dad and others witnessed here that much harder to fathom. he led a platoon of marines through a bush and mountains. >> it looks the same. at a camp that today is overgrown and unrecognizable. all that remains is a vietnamese monument reminding visitors who won the war. but his dad would say both sides lost. >> that's buck. he got killed. >> what would you tell your men? >> when they got killed? what can you tell them? war sucks.

this is the izon camera. it allows you to kind of peek in on your house. you can plug it right in. so we have live pictures inside the control room. there's ben and mark in the background. we showed this earlier. i was saying there's some lag on it. these are not used for online conversations. the sort of thing where you chat, as much as spying in to make sure ben st doing his job. way to go, ben. he showed up to work. the other cool thing is it's a totally private communication between this camera and my ipad. you can feel secure about putting in your house and no one will look at it. >> thank you very much. time to check in with christina
