we'll get back to him in just a moment. first we'll make a big turn and talk about this serious story that's leading our news this morning, this widening child sex scandal at penn state university. now the assistant football coach who allegedly witnessed jerry sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy is caught up in the firestorm as well. nbc's ron mott is live at state college with more. good morning. >> reporter: assistant coach mike mcqueary is set to be a key witness in the case against a former assistant. because emotions are raw and volatile the university is keeping him away from the stadium for tomorrow's big game. right now, mike mcqueary is in the eye of the storm. the penn state scandal cost football coaching legend joe paterno his job and other high ranking officials theirs. mcqueary still holds one but he's been sidelined. in a statement "due to multiple

threats made against assistant coach mike mcqueary the university decided it would be in the best interests of all for mcqueary not to be in attendance for the game." >> a lot of students cannot understand that, because it seems as though they both committed the same crime of negligence. >> reporter: according to the grand jury, mcqueary saw former assistant jerry sandusky allegedly sexually assault a young boy in a campus shower nearly a decade ago. mcqueary told paterno who notified his boss, the athletic director. both, along with sandusky, deny allegations against them. at paterno's home on thursday no, sign of the famed coach who has rallied students throughout the week. pattern know has reportedly contacted a prominent criminal defense attorney. some students are waiting to get

his take on the controversy. >> everybody wants to take his side, but until we can get all the facts and we want to hear from him, we want to hear what he has to say. >> reporter: governor tom corbett, the state's attorney general in 2009 when the current investigation into abuses began said there's plenty of regret to go around. >> any pennsylvanian who has any knowledge of this case feels a sense of regret and a sorrow to also see careers end, but we must keep in mind that when it comes to the safety of children, there can be no margin for error, no hesitation to act. >> i think it's going to be an absolute clean sweep of this football staff. it's hard to fathom that coaches who have been here 33 years, 34 years and another coach 24 years had no inkling of what jerry s n sandusky had been doing for over a decade and it doesn't stop

that? >> so you all will stop asking me about that. >> for perry, this is the last debate he's committed to even though there are five on the calendar next month. >> chuck todd who has a very interesting job. thank you for keeping tabs on all of this. let's get a check of the rest of the morning's top stories from natalie morales at the news desk. >> good morning ann and everyone. occupy wall street protests turned deadly last night in two cities. police are not sure if a shooting was related to demonstrations and in burlington, vermont, a 35-year-old war veteran apparently shot himself in a tent where protesters are camped out. police responded by trying to shut down the protesters' camp, meeting resistance from demonstrators. it was an up day finally for wall street thursday but eurozone fears linger this morning. cnbc's courtney reagan is at the new york stock exchange. what are we expecting today? >> stock markets are going to

focus on what's going on in italy today on what could be an otherwise quiet day for trading and economic data. italy's senate is voting on budget cuts that could lead to silvio berlusconi's stepping down. >> the stock market is open today but the bond market is closed due to the holiday. shocking footage from a deadly boat accident in key west on wednesday a racing catamaran went airborne. it flipped over and crashed. two of the racers died in that crash. new jersey police say they busted a drunk school bus driver with help from the children on the bus. some of the 25 students on the bus called and texted their parents to alert them. one middle schooler sexed

"mommy, i think our bus driver is drunk and she's not driving right." police say the 46-year-old driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.25%, five times the legal limit for operating a commercial vehicle. she's been released on bail. one 12-year-old on board said kids were yelling "i don't want to die today." how scary is that. he's done it before. he's doing it again. billy crystal will host this season's academy awards, it will be his ninth time taking the stage. the 63-year-old comedian is stepping in, now that eddie murphy has dropped out. crystal hasn't hosted since 2004 and said he's doing it again so "the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking his name" when he picks up his prescriptions. i highly doubt that. we'll be so happy to have him back. it's been a long time. >> he's a perfect choice because he's kind of that blend of just nice humor but also serving

humor. >> you're hoping he always does with the best pictures. >> cannot wait. go brian and billy. talk about the weather this morning. >> as we check things out we'll show you for today we're basically looking at a double barrel low pressure system coming into the west coast, subtropical moisture means some heavy rain from central on into southern california, anywhere from one to two inches of rain, from los angeles down into san diego, more rain in the pacific northwest as well. the rest of the country, snow showers and wet weather in the northwest and i should say into new england with some windy conditions. we've got plenty of sunshine in the mid section of the country and some lake-effect snow for northeastern ohio, western pennsylvania and western new york as well. that's what's going on in the countr good morning to you, we have a lot of rain, just about to move on shore at the coastline. so make sure you're ready for it. plan on giving yourself extra time to get to work this morning. especially if you work in the

♪ it's almost hard to remember them not together, because together they shine. last night, kate, in a gleaming one-shouldered silver gown, she likes the silver lately, cinched at her yes, still tiny waist. they joined to help raise money for fallen soldiers. william himself has lost friends in battle. >> the national arboretum has become the iconic focal point for the remembrance of the nation's heroes. >> reporter: william's service come february will bring him all the way down here, the falklands. not exactly a tropical paradise, where william will live in a sparse room on base, was warned, there's no atm or shoe repair here. and at last there won't be a walmart like brother harry had near his training in california,

procuring royal necessities like pizza and beer. >> you are clear. >> reporter: lieutenant william wales will face some tough rescue training in trying conditions. >> the locals say you can have four seasons in a day and that is quite true. i've seen that, so you could wake up to lovely sunshine and it could be snowing four hours later. >> reporter: in really important matters, what about kate? the newlyweds not yet even moved into their 20-room apartment in their palace will be able to celebrate the holidays together, catherine's birthday in january when she hits the big 3-0, but then it's six long weeks apart. >> it is the first time that william and kate have been apart for such a long time and maybe she'll have to focus more attention really on her royal duties and what she's going to be doing in the future. >> reporter: the timing of will's expected deployment so far away is kind of quashing the questionably founded rumors that kate might be expecting. but it shows right now as a

antilles. they have an expression life didn't begin on barbados but it was perfected here. the people celebrate four basic seasons, christmas, cricket, cropover and carnival. cropover is a festival that lasts about five books. the island is 21 miles by 14 miles, about a quarter of a million people call this home. while it may not be big in size, it is not short on indulgence. if peace of mind came in pictures, it might look something like this. for 70 miles, the sands that ring this tropical island make up some of the best beaches on the planet. fall into the 80-degree ocean. doesn't get better than this. one of the most popular attractions here, the sea turtles. they're friendly, swimming right alongside divers and snorkelers,

guiding them through an underwater adventure. the east side of the island faces the rugged atlantic, a surfer's dream. >> the water's warm, the waves are perfect. it's a perfect place to come with your family and have a vacation. >> reporter: once you brave the elements how about some pampering? the resorts catered to a-list celebrities like simon cowell, the beckhams and superstar rihanna was born and raised in barbados, she's now an ambassador for tourism in her homeland. with summer-like temperatures year round, the entire island is a tropical garden. among the rich foliage the barbados green monkey. these tiny creatures roam free and wait patiently for tourists to offer up some lunch.

with our own savannah guthrie for a candid interview. >> good morning to you ann. only two people know what happened inside michael jackson's bedroom in his final hours. dr. mur ray agreed to tell us hs side of the story and answer some questions in the case, why he didn't call 911 right away and how long he was really out of the room the morning jackson died. june 25th, 2009, michael jackson returns home after a long night of rehearsals to what had become a nightly ritual, dr. conrad murray waiting to give the exhausted entertainer what he wants more than anything, sleep. do you feel guilty that he died? >> i don't feel guilty, because i did not do anything wrong. i am very, very sorry for the loss of michael. michael is a personal friend. it's heartfelt. it's been painful. >> reporter: murray admits for two months every night he gave

jackson the powerful anesthetic propofol, nicknamed milk of amnesia. he said he tried to wean jackson off the drug in the final days but on june 25th when nothing else was working murray says jackson demanded his milk and the doctor gave in. you said that you gave him 25 milligrams. you watched him and then you left for two minutes. >> okay. how long as far as all of that you've heard would the effect of 25 milligrams of propofol last. >> how could you be sure? wasn't it reckless to leave? >> no. >> reporter: murray contends he gave the singer so little pro foe follow the effects of it were long gone before jackson stepped away but jackson's autopsy showed he died with much more in his system than murray admits giving. >> 10:20 phone call. >> reporter: murray originally called police he left jackson's room for only two and a half minutes to use the restroom but cell phone records show murray

was also on his iphone talking and e-mailing for more than 40 minutes, and in our interview, dr. murray made a key admission. he stepped away during that time and was gone from the room far longer than the two minutes he has acknowledged. how could you really be monitoring michael jackson at the same time you're making calls, you're texting, e-mailing, were you distracted? >> no, i was not. i looked at a man all night deprived of sleep, who was so desperate for sleep and finally is getting some sleep, am i going to sit over him, sit around him, tug on his feet, do anything unusual to wake him up, no. >> you walked out of the room to talk on the phone. >> absolutely. i wanted him to rest. >> you said you were talking on the phone but you could see him. >> i could not see him from where i was talking. >> but you could hear him. >> i would think if he got up and called for me i would hear him. >> if he stopped breathing, could you hear that? >> no, i cannot but he was not on an infusion that would cause him to stop breathing and that's the reason they talk about i was

not supposed to be monitoring him at that time because there was no need for monitoring. >> so you don't regret leaving the room? >> i regret that michael has passed. >> reporter: so how does dr. murray explain what happened? at trial, his defense argued jackson secretly swallowed several anti-anxiety pills while murray was out of the room and then injected himself with one final dose of propofol, a lethal combination. is it your theory he woke up and somehow in the two minutes you were gone injected himself, gave himself lidocaine so he wouldn't feel the burn? is that your theory? >> well, something happened when i was not in that room as to how it happened and the mechanisms, i don't know that. >> let's say he did take this propofol himself. don't you bear some responsibility? the propofol is in that room because you prescribed it to

him. >> this is the situation. it's difficult to think that i met michael with a situation where he was absolutely having use of that substance long before i got there. >> but own your portion of it. were you right to leave him in a situation where he had the opportunity to inject himself? >> well, i'm going to say that was not a foreseeable situation. if mr. jackson -- >> it wasn't? >> no, no. had i known what i knew today in retrospect, if mr. jackson was an addict and he had shared that information with me, addicts may behave in a way that is unreasonable and you may consider it. >> reporter: you yourself just said he was a desperate man. >> desperate for sleep. >> reporter: and you left him alone with propofol. >> he was asleep. >> reporter: murray came back to the bedroom to find jackson wasn't breathing. why didn't you call 911 right

away? >> no one is allowed to come upstairs except for mr. jackson. his security are not allowed to enter the house. >> you called his body guard. couldn't you have said call 911 and meet him at the gate? >> call 911 would still require him to call me back. i don't think he would do that and i was not about to leave a full explanation on the phone. >> reporter: murray did eventually tell a jackson security guard to call 911 and the paramedics were there in less than five minutes. why didn't you tell the paramedics when they came that he had taken propofol? >> that's a very sad reason, because it was inconsequential. 25 milligrams and the effects gone means nothing. >> wait a minute, why not let them be the judge of that. why not supply the best information you have? >> paramedics depend on me. >> you told them about the other drugs but you didn't tell them about the propofol. >> because it had no effect, it was not an issue. >> please be seated. >> just before paramedics arrived the security guard

testified dr. murray asked him to put empty vials and bottles into a bag. if you add all of this up, you don't call 911 for 20 minutes, you don't tell the paramedics or the e.r. docs about the propofol but you mention other drugs. the body guard says you're in the room telling people to clean up the vials. it sounds like you knew you had done something wrong and you were trying to cover your tracks. >> well, if that's the way it appears to you, i think, unfortunately, you have the wrong perception. >> nbc news confirming legendary singer michael jackson has in fact died of cardiac arrest. >> reporter: experts have said that if you hadn't delayed, if you had actually called 911 right away, there's a chance michael jackson would still be alive. >> i think experts can say whatever they want without a full deck but who knows, by the time i discovered him, had he

in barbados and we wanted to take a second to remind you how we got here. we left the top of europe yesterday after the show, we jumped on a chopper, flew down into the valley below. from there another chopper 68 miles to zurich where we got on our plane and flew some 1,850 miles to santa maria in the azores, picked up some fuel and flew another 2,700 to barbados, getting here at about 1:00 in the morning. so if you are keeping track and add that to what we've done so far, we've traveled 29,778 miles, and we are not finished yet. i want to talk about calypso, traditional part of the culture. alison hynes, great to see you. >> pleasure to meet you matt. >> let's take a little bit of a walk. here's something i've never done before. tell me about calypso. what makes a great calypso?

welcome back to day five of where in the world, for this year. every time we take the show on the road we like to sample the local cuisine. what did you find, giada? >> i had the pleasure of tasting the finest rumz s in the world on the planet and i got my first cooking class, kind of felt like being in the room with my grandmother. the cuisine of barbados is just as unique as it's made. madelyn foster is head chef at brown sugar, one of the best places for authentic bejian food. this is the classic flying fish. madelyn showed me how to make the national dish of barbados. cuckoo and flying fish. is there a seasoning on it? >> inside. >> i want to try. can i try it? >> not yet. >> why not? >> no, i have to crush the

in a statement thursday night, the university said, "due to multiple threats made against assistant coach mike mcqueary the university has decided it would be in the best interests of all for mcqueary not to be in attendance at saturday's nebraska game." according to the grand jury, mcqueary saw former assistant jerry sandusky allegedly assault a young boy in a campus shower a decade ago. mcqueary told paterno who in turn notified his boss, the athletic director. paterno hasn't been charged but his boss and another school official have been charged with failing to report the crime and perjury, both along with sandusky, deny the allegations against them. >> be the best! >> reporter: paterno has reportedly contacted a prominent criminal defense attorney. governor tom corbett, the state's attorney general in 2009 when the current investigation into sandusky's alleged abuses began, said there's plenty of regret to go around. >> every pennsylvanian who has

dr. gail saltz. >> good morning. >> physical hunger, a lot of us grazing throughout the day probably not ever experiencing hunger like we think. what do we feel with physical hunger? >> biological hunger, true hunger is something you need for survival. we're hardwired to survive. we need calories and mostly this is protein, essential fats. it's not eating for pleasure. that's something that's learned. when you're biologically hungry we most often don't get to that point because we pre-eat, feeling fatigued, your stomach feels empty, growling, you feel a slight headache. i need to eat. these are brain signals sent to you for true hunger. we confuse the issue of i need to eat. that's biological. i want to eat is something else. >> the emotional hunger gets in the way a lot and a lot of us when it comes to struggling with diet, that is often what's happening there, we're reaching for food as a comfort.

>> i would say pretty much that's almost always at least a piece of the case that psychologically you're driven by your mood state. i feel sad. it makes me feel better and in the moment it does make you feel better. i feel anxious. i have to eat. i need to stay awake. i'm bored. i want to eat because i want to be part of socially what's going on. these are different emotional drivers of eating. they're legitimate in the moment but don't work long-term >> why does it feel when you eat something it does feel it is comforting but at the same time you feel like you're satiating some sort of hunger? >> because you are filling yourself of course. >> yes. >> and that just positively r l reinforces the idea the feel good that you get, brain chemistry is definitely involved but the satisfaction of an emotional need. now i just ate this chocolate in those ten minutes, boy, i felt less sad, i felt less anxious. >> food really does taste good when we feed that need, it is

reinforcing. the problem on the back end there's guilt and shame with this eating. if you're eating for biology you eat and move on. when you're eating to are emotional reasons you feel good in the moment and that turns into a lot of bad feelings, negative going why am i doing this? i'm a bad person and it fuels more overeating and that's a huge problem that has to stop. >> you came one strategies how to make sure you know which is which, emotional eating or because you are hungry. madelyn, keep a food and feelings journal. >> you need to connect what you're eating and when you're eating and why and connect your feelings with this because you have to take a step back and go, you know, am i upset, did i have a fight with someone? am i turning to food and just grabbing it mindlessly or has there been three or four hours between the times i'm eating and the only way you can do this is to be accountable to yourself and that's what a food log does. >> when you see it in writing and do it over a period of time you're able to see which emotion tends to trigger your eating the most, which is really helpful, because then you can cope with

that, you can find other ways to cope with that emotion and you can say to yourself, oh, here i am anxious again, that's probably going to make me feel like eating. i'm not really hungry. i'm anxious. >> part two, do a mood check, make sure you're assessing the mood at the time. >> for each people different things. if it turns out it's anxiety, you want to deal with anxiety. >> madelyn you say the thing is to avoid skipping a meal which can backfire when you skip a meal. >> right, because you need to create some structure, when you skip a meal, you send all of the biological signals awry, you don't know if you're hungry or fool. when you skip meals, food and mood are really tied so you have to do an assessment on both of these and not keep the food separately and not keep the moods separate. >> and assess if you're content. how does this help control your hunger? >> there's full like i'm overfull. there's i'm filled, and you have to sort of get in touch with that feeling, because that will help you from just going

overboard all the time, and contentment of course is also about your mood state so as i said, you want to, if you use this to fix your mood in the moment, and you've really got an ongoing mood issue, you haven't dealt with that at all. you can come up with coping skills, so maybe you're going to say when i feel anxious next time i'm going to take a bath, listen to a relaxing song, i'm going to take a walk, some other coping skills so that food doesn't have to be a reaction to that. >> find some other non-food activity. >> non-food activity but sometimes you can use food, but low calorie foods or things that satisfy that oral need, the hand-to-mouth. take a bagged salad and go hand to mouth instead of chips or herbal tea or sugarless gum. if you're an oral person you often turn to food and need to find low calorie activities to keep your mouth busy without a lot of extra calories. >> 100 to 150 calories. ladies, thanks so much. >> thank you. >> i am still hungry, though. coming up next, ice dancing
