there is one car on the shoulder. we have slowing out of the altamont pass. this could be a tough one for 580. new this morning, police still at the scene of the occupy call camp today. we'll take you there for a live picture. we're hearing police did this at 4:00 a.m. they're taking down tents, asking students for i.d. officers in riot gear surrounding the plaza. and so far the students don't like like they're too concerned about what's happening out there. we'll bring you an update over the next half hour. today marks the first faculty strike in cal state university history. professors, coaches, counselors striking at two different campus campuse campuses. >> good morning to you.

this strike is just starting as we speak. some of the faculty members are picketing behind me. leading up to the east bay. this is unprecedented. it never happened before. it's our understanding that so many colleagues if not all will participate as they will shut down campus today. at issues are pay raises promised to them but they never received. they were supposed to go into effect between the two academic years. the csu system said they couldn't pay the raises because they say because of budget cuts for the state, they didn't have the money. the professor here for 20 years. what's the message that we want to send to the university? >> that you have a union. you're negotiating something. the university refuses to give it to you, what have we got? students are about to pay four times more than they did five

years ago. b just a week ago i was informed i'm going to have 65 students in a class that usually has 40. i don't get paid more for that. and the quality of the education goes down. >> do you have sympathy for the administration? the argument being that sacramento is in dire straits. they cut so much money from the system. >> 5% of the money that the cal state system has is paid for instruction. the rest goes to executive salaries and administrative look. look how much raises they give themselves. sooer increase in faculty. more students we have to teach. the students are paying four times as much. i have no sympathy for an administration run that way. >> thank you very much m one of 700 faculty members expected to participate in the general strike today. it's unprecedented.

the campus says they are open for business. this is something the students have been well aware of. the campus is expected to be shut down today. 95 people who occupy the san francisco bank are out of jail this morning. the group invading the financial district in the afternoon. they climbed up on furniture, wrote chak messages and walls. it took 40 police officers five hours to clear out the bank. many of those arrested were uc students protesting fee increases and budget cuts. they were taken to jail, cited and released. meantime occupy wall street protesters have big plans in new york. we've been showing you live all morning long. they're marking the two-month anniversary of the protests.

we've seen people gathering this morning. protesters say they'll wear suits and they are trying to get in on the floor and disrupt the opening bell. police have been checking the i.d. of people before they enter the building to see if they should be there. we're certainly keeping an eye on this. we'll let you know what happens this morning. the time is 6:05. a popular charter school will expand the campuses in san jose. >> this is one of five rocket ship charter schools currently in san jose. but soon there could be a few more. this is because last night the santa clara county board of education approved three more of

these k through 5 schools to open here in san jose next year. for those of you not so familiar rocket ship is the organization that oversees innovative schools. they haven't been around for long. but already they're eliminating the achievement gap. one was ranked the number one elementary school serving low-income students in santa clara county. >> this is the first time i've seen the kids invested. our kids know what reading level they're on. they talk to their parents about it. >> and the board vote means one rocket ship school will open in the district. two more within san jose unified

next august. not everyone is excited. five are threatening to sue saying they should be able to decide individually if they want a charter school in their territory. for now as it stands, next summer it will be home to eight rocket ship elementary schools. the state supreme court plans to release an opinion about whether california law gives prop # supporters legal standing to defend it in court. the option is not binding. but the u.s. circuit court of appeals asking for it. the case is now in the habds of the court. >> a federal report on the plane crash which killed three tesla employees will be released some time today. the safety board says the plane's engines and protellers

showed no signs of mechanical problems when it crashed in february of 2010. the tests showed the tesla executive doug born who was piloting the plane did not drink alcohol but took two prescription drugs at the time of the accident. several lawsuits have stalled in court, pending the release of the ntsb report. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we have really thick fog out there this morning. make sure to give yourself time to reach your destination safely. so thick that we have the drizzle in some areas this morning. by tomorrow we will start to see on and off showers ramp up. this weekend we have a lot of rain on the way. late saturday to sunday. we could be picking up anywhere between half an inch to an inch. right now we're watching thick fog all the way to the south bay where we don't traditionally see thick patches like this. a mile and a quarter in

livermore. oakland and san francisco is looking good at the surface. ten miles or better. then santa rosa with quarter mile visibility. showers for the north. napa, half a mile visibility. and we set this in motion for you. you see the showers. here is the weather maker. this is slated to arrive later today. we're not expecting a lot of action. it will fall apart as it moving over to santa rosa. maybe up to a tenth of an inch at best in places that pick up the most rain today. the temperatures are cold this morning in novato. you're at 37 degrees. meanwhile, rather comfortable in places like oakland. and 51 in sunnyvale right now. headed towards a comfortable weekend. we'll take you through the seven-day forecast. i want to give you a preview. 2,500 foot snow level early on saturday. that could make for treacherous conditions if you want out head out of town. we'll talk about the biggest travel day of the year coming up and what the whether will hold. let's talk about your drive right now.

welcome back, everybody. it is the two-month anniversary of the wall street protest out there. the occupy wall street movement. the plan for all the people out there is to have a little sneak attack on the stock exchange. protesters say they will wear suit ls and try to get on the trading floor and disrupt the opening bell, which goes off very soon. we'll keep an eye on this one and let you know. the time now is 6:13. >> the state attorney general's office wants some answers from

mortgage giants fannie mae and freddie make. they are subpoenaed to answer questions about their activities in california. it is part of a larger investigation into lending practices in the state. fannie mae and freddie mac with thousands of foreclosed properties. this morning newt gingrich is facing questions about whether he profited from the housing crisis. congress slashing the salaries and bonuses of freddie mac's top executive as we learned that earlier in the year gingrich made over a million dollars as a consultant. his campaign says gingrich never lobbied for freddie mac. but critics argue he may have influenced policy. >> the point is that he took money to also influence senior republicans to be favorable to fannie and freddie. >> inside sources tell us the associated press gingrich was

brought to help freddie mac identify friendly lawmakers on capitol hill. it is 6:14 right now. president obama is in indonesia this morning. his last stop at a swing through the pacific. he is there to shore up alliances. yesterday he announced plans to deploy 2,500 marines to australia. it's a decision that is certainly not sitting well with china's leaders. but other countries are applauding. earlier today a spokesperson for the philippines says he thinks the president will be stabilizing for his country. >> quite the contrary. unstable air mass is moving in right now. we might see thunderstorms later on today. right now is the fog that we're watching for you. really starting to settle in. into places that don't traditionally have to deal with thick patches of fog at this hour. san jose, for example, taking a live look. and you can see your visibility is dropping off here.

not only is it foggy, it's cold this morning. livermore, a mile and a quarter. that's it for you in terms of visibility now. this is the weather still north of clear lake. you get the first showers over the course of the next 45 minutes. but nothing heavy. everything we see pass through the bay area will be light and mostly isolated for today. 51 degrees in sunny veil. as we head through 7:00 a.m. just after suchbrise, that's when we start to drop off. that's the coolest time of the day. if not the showers, likely the mist. the onshore has strengthened substantially. it is generating a mist. we stop the clock on the future cast for rainfall accumulation

whatever we pick up today, tomorrow, early saturday won't be much. as you can see here, probably less than half an inch. we continue to the clock to 5:00 a.m. on sunday. the yell he or moderate rainfall starts to arrive. heavy periods of rain on sunday. that's the day to not make the outdoor activity. good news, staying cool on tuesday. a mix of sun and clouds on wednesday. the busiest travel time of the year. that's the time when mike really comes in. how are you looking today? >> clutch today, too. not as much going on. westbound 237. christina, there's a disabled vehicle not far from the studio, and there's a little bit of slowing. it sounds like a person is out of the car and on the roadway. at the top of your screen here.

here we're looking good. the speed sensor just north registers close to the limit. you see the yellow blips indicating a heavier flow of traffic. expect slowing at 680 past the airport. the peninsula, a smooth drive right now. 101, no problems coming in either direction. however, the southbound direction alittle slowing through san mateo. might be heavier volume building as you get closer to 630. we'll see how things are shaping up on the roadway. we have one set of flashing lights right here. this is 880 north of 66. there is one set of flashing lights. no lanes. we saw a little slowing northbound and on the southbound side as the crew arrived. things are calming down here at the limit between 230 and the toll plaza where the metering lights were just turned on. five minutes of buildup. you'll see this for all lanes.

cal tran failed to notify other officials that a technician who did inspections was being investigated for falsifying records on other projects. and the eastern span in 2006 and 2007. he allegedly falsified the tests and didn't check to see if the testing gauge was working properly. the commissioners say had they known of the investigation, the tests could have been redone before a steel tower was installed. if you're part of the late night crowd you could catch a ride with board. they will meet to consider a plan to hire buss to run between stations late on weekend nights. a trial run operating trains after midnight on friday is proving the difficult for bart to stay open past midnight. they would have to push train

service after 6:00 a.m. on saturday sow crews would have time to perform maintenance. disrupting travel for people who work on weekends is a problem. walnut creek is saying hello to new high-tech parking meters. they are set to install 1 thourk meters in the downtown area. they'll accept coins, credit cards and cell phones. officials say the meters are a lot cheaper than the pay stations. they should pop up over the next few months with all of them in place by the end of the year. an oakland city council member wants to give people a little bit of wiggle room. the council member is proposing a five-minute grace period for pay and display. she says the goal is to eliminate the gotcha aspect and allow people extra time to shop and do business. she said it should ease the

at 4:00 a.m. police in riot gear moving in on the occupy cal movement trying to push them out of the area. two arrests were made. so far a peaceful event. the time is 6 clrn 24. berkeley will open a large research and teaching facility in shanghai, china. the government will pay for the new center expected to bup and running in july of 2012. the scepter is part of a plan to increase the school's presence in china. santa clara county sheriff's office was set to take over at the airport in february. now city officials skost cutting have saved enough money. and the handover isn't worth the

did agree on raises for the two academic years covering 2008 to 2010, is csu has never paid. the reason, administrators say they've can't afford to because the state took away their money during the budget crisis. now a panel has recommended administrators cough up the pay raises, but again csu says the money isn't there. and if they were to pay, it could mean cuts to the number of classes offered to students. >> you can't have quality education when management breaks the contract. two independent neutrals have said they should pay the money they owe that we requested as a compromise for 2008-09 and 2009-10. they claim they don't have the money. two independent neutrals say they do have the money. >> the deal was reached based on

a promise by the state of california. we don't materialize the funding here on our own. we certainly don't have a printing press in our back offic office. >> this is a bit of history for the csu system. never have teachers and faculty performed. this was a surprise. stun students were informed in the days leading up to this to let them know there would not be class today. i'm bob redell, john and laura? >> interesting to see the activity there. campus police are still holding watch over the former spot of the occupy cal campsite. that's going on now. we've heard two arrests so far. apparently both were voluntary. so everything seems to be calm out there. we're seeing trucks pulling up on things the occupiers were having police moved in in riot gear at 4:00 a.m. they took down tents and started

to move the protesters out of the plaza. so we'll keep you posted as things progress out there. we now know more about a man killed during a raid with police at berkeley. according to an online video that documented christopher travis' life, the 32-year-old was a bright student who transferred to the university. he was also a self-described computer nerd who had a troubled past. but university officials are painting a different picture today. it doesn't know what he planned to do with that loaded handgun that he brought with him. on tuesday he was shot and later died after he allegedly pointed the weapon at officers. >> they were giving him the command to drop the gun. drop the weapon. >> at the same time, we need to think about the support system for students who are under a lot of stress.

we have a significant sign that thousands of american troops will seen leave iraq. today in the bay tracie potts is live in washington with the full story. >> the war is winding down. after today you will no longer starting today troops will no longer be able to get mail via the military post offices. we have 2400 troops down. way down from the height of the war. at this point, just over a month from the end of the war. 9 million remains unaccounted for.

picture of the golden gate bridge. why you can still see both towers. as we head through the next couple of hours, all the fog beneath the bridge will creep to the north. and we'll probably lose visibility here through 7:45 this morning. so, still getting a nice clear drive there. we're looking good in terms of your temperatures. mild in san jose. 45 in gilroy. 51 in sunnyvale. and 39 degrees this morning in places like novato. as we head throughout the morning hours, we'll continue to see more fog develop especially through 8:00, 9:00, 10:00. then the fog will hang out by the bay all day long. we had a lot of sunshine for the first part of the week. yesterday some cities hit the 70 degree mark. what a difference today makes. i'm forecasting temperatures in the upper 50s in san francisco. as you can see right now showers are starting to push into the northern most portion of the state. but for us, action is not too heavy just yet. we'll get a little bit of drizzly fog picking up on the radar returns.

no heavy rains just yet. we have to wait until sunday for the heavy periods of rain. 49 degrees as you make your way off to work. 63 degrees, so kind of comfortable in places like san jose as you break for lunch. 56 and staying cool in san francisco. you make your way home from work with more shower activity, not much, though. but you can see here we are expecting probably half an inch in the places that pick up the most rain. probably saturday night into sunday. you see yellows moving in here. that's when it starts to get active. 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. we'll see heavy rain push south. that could be the time for showers that interrupt. maybe you have somewhere to be over the course of the weekend. maybe you're just going to pick up a turkey. the good news is, just like the past couple of weeks the showers are arriving at the end of the week. they last through the weekend. they clear up in time for the start of the next week. next week is huge when it comes

to holiday travel, holiday shopping. to the good news is we'll clear out just in time for that. let's check out your drive with mike inouye. >> we're working for a heavier flow of traffic. a lot of folks heading to work in the south bay. a couple of accidents off the shoulder. right here we see slowing from capitol expressway pass 880 into the airport. the accident right there is 880. that is out of the roadway just moving off to the shoulder over the last couple of minutes. this might affect your peninsula drive. there's a stall there possiblily blocking the slow lanes. and the crews over the next few minutes. but 101 and 280 both moving smoothly between here and the city, both directions are nice. another side of the bay, 880 is slow southbound out of san leandro down through hayward and into fremont, expect that to

build over the next 10 to 15. and an earlier accident in livermore has cleared from north livermore. got to show you the bay bridge. 25-minute drive to that spot. look who is waiting for you. thank you, mike. it's 6:50 right now. police in riot gear raided the occupy cal campus this morning, taking everyone out of the area. we want to show you cell phone video that captured the raid. it happened about 4:00 this morning, we understand. where police went in the riot gear, moving everyone out of the plaza there. they then reportedly went down ripping down tents. we know at least a couple of people were arrested. as we've been following the story all morning long. people remain on the campus site. close to where the actual encampment was. and they may try to reoccupy later. this is cell phone video that really captured everything that was happening this morning at 4:00 a.m.

but they have never paid because the state took the money away from them. sacramento withheld $650 million this year. now an independent panel has recommended that the sad mrgs at least cough up some of the pay raises, but again the university system says the money just isn't there. and if they were to pay, they say it could mean cuts to the classes offered to students. the faculty says this is unfair. especially since they believe the very administrators withholding the pay raises are, in their opinion, overpaid. now campus is officially open for business today, but it's up to each individual instructor whether they're going to be holding class. if you have a situation where all professors and lectures decide to stay and picket. they are open for business, whether the instructors show up

children. five school superintendents within santa clara county are not happy with the board's decision, and they are threatening to sue, saying each dprikt should have the the right to decide individually if they want charter schools within the territory. by next summer they could be home to eight rocket ship elementary schools. >> danville police calling on witnesses to come forward on a deadly traffic accident that killed a mother and her daughter. the pair died earlier this month when their car was broadsided by a red toyota pickup. the driver of the truck survived the crash. the accident happened in sycamore valley road. family members telling police some witnesses have come forward claiming to have seen the accident. anybody with information is asked to contact the danville police department. a santa rosa man will stand

trial for hitting a 4-year-old boy in a crosswalk. a judge ruled there is enough evidence to charge him with three counts, including felon hit and run. police he say he hit christopher rowe in a crosswalk and then drove off. he died the next day. lopez was caught with the help of a good samaritan who spotted his car and then reported it to police. los gatos police are releasing the sketch of a man wanted for attempting to kidnap a teenage girl. here's the sketch. the suspect is described as a hispanic man in his mid-40s. clean shaven. 5'6" with a stocky build. he was last seen in a four-door station wagon. the suspect allegedly tried to abduct a 17-year-old. it happened sunday afternoon on lark avenue just east of winchester. the girl punched him in the
