begin with a day of solidarity. thousands of occupy wall street protesters took to the streets across the nation yesterday, marking two months of a movement seeking to stop the country's widening income disparity. nbc's michelle franzen reports. >> reporter: the protesters marked the two-month anniversary of the occupy wall street movement with day-long rallies and marches. but what was suppose to be a day of peaceful demonstrations turned violent. more than 200 arrests in new york city alone. starting earl i didn't in the morning as protesters blocked traffic near wall street. confrontations escalated at the park where occupy protest got its start and where just nights ago, nypd moved in to clear the park of tents, tarps and sleeping bags. demonstrators then took their march across the brooklyn bridge, where last month more than 700 people were arrested during a similar march. more confrontations and mover arrests. across the country, cities are

taking similar action. police evicted protesters in dallas and berkeley. >> every time we set up, the police are going to trample on our first amendment rights. >> protesters determined from coast to coast, turning out to show solidarity, holding rallies in los angeles, houston and portland, oregon, the movement sparked by outrage over the economy and fuelled by social immediate wra is now faced with the challenge of holding on to public support beyond a day of protest. michelle franzen, nbc news. elsewhere, president obama is ushering in a significant change in u.s. foreign policy with myanmar, also known as burma. and announcing that secretary of state hillary clinton will travel to the southeast asian country next month. this will be the first visit of its kind in more than 50 years. underscoring his commitment to human rights with the asia-pacific region, president obama acknowledged recent quote flickers of progress from

myanmar's historically repressive government. however, white house officials stress the move is only a first step towards diplomacy. the success of which depends on how willing myanmar's government is to continuing on the road to reform. well a homeless idaho man suspected of firing shots at the white house has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president. according to court documents, 21-year-old oscar ortega hernandez was convinced the federal government was conspiring against him and he considered president obama to be quote, the antichrist. investigators say ortega sat inside his car and fired off nine rounds at the white house with a semi automatic rifle. if convicted, ortega could face life in prison. elsewhere this morning, republican presidential hopeful, herman cain, is now being guarded by secret service, making him the first 2012 gop

candidate to receive such protection. sources tell nbc news, secret service protection for cain began last night. homeland secretary janet napolitano along with congress approved the request. here's a look at other stories making news "early today" in america. surveillance video of a brutal beating led to firing of two new mexico police officers. the footage shows the officers repeatedly kicking and punching an alleged car thief after catching him in a parking lot. a special prosecutor is reviewing case to decide if the fired officers will face criminal charges. highway traffic in south carolina came to a screeching halt after a semi tractor-trailer rammed into a sign post. the impact of the collision brought down an amber alert sign all across the lanes on interstate 8 5.

good morning, everyone, lynn will see it, not me. your forecast was very active on the west coast, especially up in the mountainous areas, winter weather advisories from the mountains of central california, up north to the cascades of oregon and washington state, northern rockies, winter storm warnings, montana will get hit. snow on the way for salt lake city. a very active weather pattern. cold air is plentiful with the storm as it comes down from the north. the storm is still spinning up here off the coast of british columbia, it's driven the cold front off the coast of san francisco, san francisco will have some chilly nights over the weekend. we should see snow levels dropping, down as low as 2,000 to 3,000 feet. people could see some flakes. you can see the white on the map as snow, it's nothing too organized, it's almost like three or four little systems as it moves through. it's not one centralized big storm. the highest snow totals will be here around jackson hole, wyoming, where they'll be skiing on fresh powder over the

good morning, and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn ber can and here are some of your top headlines this morning. energy secretary, steven chu faced hours of hostile questioning by republicans on thursday, about a $500 million federal loan that went to the now-defunct solar panel maker, solyndra. syracuse university has placed associate head basketball coach, bernie fine on administrative leave after two former ball boys told espn they were molested by him for a period of more than 12 years. syracuse police say they have opened an investigation. there was a brief hijacking scare on a new york-bound delta flight wednesday when the plane's captain accidentally locked himself in the lavatory. when a passenger with a foreign accent tried to alert the cockpit, the co-pilot became alarmed and notified air traffic controllers. fighter jets were called off

after the freed pilot radioed the controllers about the m misunderstanding. the los angeles police department has reopened their investigation into the death of natalie wood who drowned off the coast of southern california in 1981. homicide detective says they've received new information. ed army says it has tested a new weapon capable of traveling five times the speed of sound. the so-called advanced hypersonic weapon travels from hawaii to an island some 2300 miles away in less than a half an hour. well now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,770, after losing 134 points yesterday. the s&p dipped 20 points. the nasdaq tumbled 51. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei fell 104 points, while in hong kong, the hang seng dropped 326. well a sudden spike in

spanish costs thursday, fuelled new concerns that europe's debt crisis may be mushrooming. an auction of ten-year bonds left spain paying nearly 7% interest, the same rate which forced greece and ireland to seek rescue loans from the european union. that rate makes interest payments on debt so high, governments can barely afford them. once again, euro concerns overshadowed good news here. last week jobless applicants fell to the lowest level in seven months. also, october home building fell less than expected. our gauge of future construction surged. still another growing investor concern is the deadlocked congressional supercommittee. investors fear the consequences of huge automatic spending cuts, if there's no agreement. in earnings, net app plunged after forecasting below estimates. applied materials sank after warning current earnings would be weaker than expected. sears holdings fell after missing expectations. elsewhere, angie's list soared

today." in sports, he's not particularly fast and his game is anything but pretty, but once again, tim tebow has led the denver broncos to an improbable victory. here's an early look at all your sports headlines. >> he may not be the best passer and he may not have the strongest arm, but there's one thing you cannot deny at least at this time, tim tebow is a winner. here we go to denver, we'll get to tebow in a moment. tough game for the jets' mark sanchez, didn't throw a touchdown. unless you count this one to the other team. andre goodman with a pick six in the third. the jets took the lead with a field goal and tebow took over. drove the broncos the length of the field. capped off the longest drive of the season with a 20-yard touchdown run. denver took the lead with under a minute to play. tim tebow, silencing his critics once again. he's won four games as a starter and the broncos captured a thriller, 17-13. baseball, dodgers clayton kerr shah proved you don't need to be on a good team to win the

yesterday's guinness world records, they had thousands around the world attempting to set benchmarks. in london, the world's fastest toilet lined up in a race against the world's smallest car. both vehicles were left in the dust by the world's fastest disability scooter. in florida, a 91-year-old woman was named the world's oldest yoga teacher and no guinness world day would be complete without a group wanting to do something. in dublin, 262 people dressed as leprechauns gathered in a theater. and people crammed themselves
