tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  November 23, 2011 5:00am-6:00am PST

5:00 am
it's wednesday, november 23rd. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thanks so much for joining us. it is close to 5:00. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning everyone, i'm jon kelley. time to check in with meteorologist christina loren for the forecast on the day before thanksgiving. >> we have rain on the way. the good news is, it doesn't arrive until tonight. wait until i show you what they're facing on the east coast. we had flight delays yesterday out of sfo for low ceilings, pretty thick fog. this morning the fog is not that bad just yet. it could become a factor. we will time the showers out for you. we have your black friday and cyber monday forecast coming up. traffic is relatively light as we look at 87 approaching downtown. reports of big chunks of debris
5:01 am
87 at 101. no details on what the debris was. so far, the light traffic, what it was, should be able to get by. just prepare for it, guys. thank you very much. a dangerous intersection on the peninsula where a young girl was hit and killed earlier this year has been the center of attention for months now. this morning there's growing concerns after a new study finds what residents don't want to hear. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live with the new information for us. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. this is the intersection where 6-year-old sioreli torres was hit and killed. this is bay and gloria in east palo alto. you can see there are crosswalks here, even the yield to pedestrian sign. here is the kicker. there's no stop sign here. that's what residents want. a new study just released says one is not needed. after the september 28th
5:02 am
accident, the city hired a consulting group out of san francisco to analyze this intersection. the firm's report finds, though there have been five accidents at this intersection in the past year, it does not warrant a stop sign, primarily because two of the incidents were caused by right-of-way violations which are not correctable by a stop sign. instead this is what the firm recommends, school crosswalk signs be posted at the intersection. it also says slow school crossing markings should be painted on the pavement of bay road as soon as possible. sioreli torres was hit on her way to school who was hit and killed by a school teacher who said she never saw the girl because she was blinded by the sun. there is a significant windshield glare for southbound drivers at that time of the morning. last week the district attorney's office got the case
5:03 am
to see if they should file criminal charges. in the meantime, i have reached out to the mayor of east palo alto to get his reaction. i'm waiting to hear back from him. reporting from east palo alto this morning, i'm marla tellez. time is 5:03. a bicyclist accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian in san francisco will be in court for the first time this morning. 23-year-old randolph ang allegedly ran a red light back in july. police say he hit a woman and she died from her injuries a month later. ang being charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. the case against former b.a.r.t. police officer johannes mehserle and four current officers continues. mehserle and the four officers are expected to take the stand sometime today. they are accused of using excessive force on kenneth caruthers back in 2008.
5:04 am
caruthers says officers tackled him, hogtied him and kicked and punched him. b.a.r.t. says the officers used reasonable force after caruthers appeared to be threatening violence. an annual tradition, today expected to be the busiest travel dare of the entire year. more than 5.3 million californians say they're planning to travel, more than 4% higher than last year. christie smith live at san francisco international airport where officials expect a 2% increase for passengers this year compared to last. >> reporter: good morning, jon. i took a look at the crowds inside. it's really not that bad right now. they're saying most of the flights in the morning pick up around the 6:00 a.m. hour. i've been keeping an eye on the people. it seems the most tension is trying to get in here and parked. here is mike mccarron, spokesperson for sfo. i took a quick look at the board
5:05 am
and everything seemed to stay on board. >> right now everything is on time. that looks good for us. we're looking at the northeast weather right now. there's some storms going through the boston area. right now that has not had an impact. hopefully it won't throughout the day. we're hoping it will bb a good day throughout the day. >> i remember when the wednesday before was the day when you would see these outrageous lines. we're not seeing that. you were saying actually the friday before is a real busy day now. >> our busiest day of the whole travel period was last friday. we've seen over the past eight, ten years more and more schools take the whole week off so families are traveling not just on wednesday, but tuesday, monday, the weekend before. it doesn't mean it's not going to be busy. it's still going to be very busy here. we'll do about 135,000 people today. a normal day is 100 to 105. that's about a 30% increase over an average day. also for us physically at sfo,
5:06 am
we stretched our crowds out among four buildings instead of three. so that makes it better. >> how are the parking lots looking? >> we added about 1400 lots to long-term parking. even if that fills up, we'll issue vouchers and let people park in the short-term garage at the long-term rate. >> any advice for people coming in? anything else that people should know? >> the best thing anyone can do before they leave their house is check with the carrier about the status of their flight. they can be going someplace like hawaii, but it could start in boston and it could be delayed. get here at least 90 minutes early for domestic, two hours for international. bring a lot of patience. >> you're probably in a good mood if you're going to hawaii or mexico. >> i would be. >> thanks so much for talking with us. i'll send it back to you.

5:08 am
owner that signed off on removing all the protesters last night. it is 5:07 right now. in the meantime san francisco leaders are offering an only live branch to occupy protesters giving them a new place to set up camp. mayor ed lee wants protesters to relocate to a former high school site on mission street. it's essentially a parking lot with adjacent portable classrooms all secured by a fence. no word if occupy will agree. some protesters say the city is just trying to keep them out of sight. police say they know who vandalized a number of banks in the east bay. they just have not arrested them. 23-year-old jared viticara. he apparently confessed to writing on the windows of banks. police say brksetacari is an active occupy protester and said he didn't intend to damage the banks. he was not arrested.
5:09 am
the case was turned over to the district attorney's office. it is 5:08 right now. going to get some rain. it most likely will fall when everybody is snug in bed? >> kind of depends on where you're waking um this morning. the north bay will get the showers first. late this evening into tonight starting for you. as laura pointed out, overnight. that's when the greater bay area will get the rain. this is what we're working with right now. all the action is well off to our north. take a look at this storm versus what they're facing on the east coast. take a look at this monster storm. if you're trying to get anywhere along the eastern seaboard, check ahead with your carrier. right now we don't have any delays. i'm checking with the faa about every five minutes. right now you're looking okay. you can imagine there's going to be a ripple effect once we start to see the delays. that's a mean system. thunderstorms, the number one weather condition that grounds airplanes. seattle, moderate. some delays expected out of sfo because of the low clouds

buy and support clean energy, but it's not going to try to be the company that invents it. shares in los gatos-based netflix fell to the lowest level in two years a day after the company raised millions of dollars by selling stock to a private firm. netflix ceo reid hastings under a lot of pressure from disbelieving investors. take a look at this. netflix spent $200 million earlier this year buying back its own shares at $222 a share. then this week it sold $400 million worth of the company between $70 and $85 a share to raise money it needed that it didn't have. let me remind you, buy low, sell high. >> it's just been amazing the see right here in the bay area, being in our own back yard how well it's done and how it's fallen. >> it's having a lot of trouble. that ceo under a lot of

>> the call back is for everyone like me. that's isaac. nbl 101 has cleared from your middle lanes north of 380. now a new report of more debris, a different sort. it's a big rig strap in the lanes across the two middle lanes south of the airport. it looks like folks are already picking up and dropping off at the airport. we'll continue to follow this. >> thank you. >> the coolest bartender on the waters. parents living in one peninsula neighborhood calling for more action at one dangerous intersection after city leaders review a new traffic report in the area which contains details residents did not want to hear. "today in the bay's" marla tellez live in east palo alto with more on this story. marla, good morning. good morning. this intersection here was deemed one of the most dangerous in east palo alto last year. since then a handful of accidents have happened. the most recent included the death of a 6-year-old girl. now, she was in this intersection in the crosswalk
5:33 am
actually. this is bay and gloria, when she was hit and killed. the problem, according to residents is there's no stop sign here. a new study says one is not needed. sioreli torres rah mora was on her way to school when she was struck and killed. after that accident the city hired a consulting group to analyze the intersection. state guidelines require five collisions at an intersection in order to install something like a stop sign or a traffic light. the firm's report finds though there have been five accidents at this intersection in the past year, a stop sign is not warranted essentially because two of the incidents were caused by right-of-way violations on behalf of the drivers which are not correctable by a stop sign. now, instead, here are the firm's recommendations. one is to post school crosswalk signs at this intersection of bay and gloria. number two, paint the pavement of bay rode with "slow school
5:34 am
crossing" markings. the engineers also suggest prohibiting on-street parking on the west side of bay road. this is right across the street, in order to give drivers of vehicles and pedestrians a better view of each other. the east palo alto city council is going to be discussing the results of this study at its next meeting. that's coming up next tuesday, the 29th. reporting from east palo alto this morning, i'm marla tellez. jon? >> thank you for the update. 5:34 right now. the federal government's chances of recouping money from solyndra appears to be getting slimmer. appears there are no serious offers to buy the company. scott mcgrew joins us with the details. good morning, scott. >> good morning to you. it looks like solyndra may be sold in pieces because no one wants to make what solyndra made. there's no reason to buy the whole factory, lock, stock and barrel.
5:35 am
solyndra tells a bankruptcy court in delaware, it will probably have to auction off the machinery, real estate and patents separately. that hurts taxpayers because we invested hundreds of millions of dollars in solyndra and we want our money back. to make it worse, under a strange deal, washington is allowing private investors to get paid first. we're in the back of the line for what's looking like a smaller and smaller pool of money. so why won't anyone buy solyndra out rite? solyndra made thin film solar which is state-of-the-art but much more expensive than the poly silicon solar cells you see everywhere. solyndra figured out how to turn gold into silver. frankly, nobody wants to do that. >> thank you very much. most of us certainly know how tight times are right now. imagine the struggle local charities are facing. this morning we're learning a major food bank in the south bay is still short on holiday turkey this year.
5:36 am
"today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside the second harvest food bank in san jose. there's still time for us to help? >> reporter: maybe not for thanksgiving, but definitely for the rest of the holiday season. good morning. second harvest here in san jose says it needs a minimum of 11,500 frozen turkeys to feed its clients. right now they're about 1,000 short. the situation is much better than it was last week when we checked with the food bank. they had just over 7,000 turkeys donated at that point. now they're just over 10,50, still shy of the goal of 11,500. second harvest serves about a quarter million people in santa clara and san mateo counties. what's frightening is that the food used -- is used to supplement the meals of those in need where before we used to
5:37 am
supplement the meals of those in need. now this is all they got. it's just their primary source. you can still help out by dropping off a frozen bird to second harvest to the collection center location. you have the one in san jose. there's also a second one in san carlos. of course, they always are reminding us cash is king. they're more than happy to take your cash and make it go a long way. to get more information, you can go online and google second harvest food bank or look right there. there's there website, shfb.org. >> easy to remember. thank you so much, bob. all right. it is 5:37. time to check back in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. we're still looking good. we don't have flight delays outs of sfo, none out of san jose or oakland. we're expecting moderate delays later today out of san francisco and seattle. major delays expected out of new york city and philadelphia. philadelphia this morning already reporting 15 to
5:38 am
30-minute delays due to low ceilings. check ahead throughout the day today. overall, if you're traveling by vehicle, looking good, especially if you're heading to southern california this morning. the rain not yet moved into the bay area. still about 12 from our significant steady rainfall. as you can see here, pretty good rainfall starting to push into the northern most portion of the state. a little spotty activity, prefrontal participation. main event arrives by about 10:00 p.m. in the greater bay area. i don't think we'll see too much of that heavy rain. definitely moderate and light rain on the way. by 5:00 a.m. thursday, the showers completely subside by about 11:00 a.m. thanksgiving. looking pretty good there. temperatures stay a little on the cool side. you'll probably need that jacket throughout the day, especially if you're waking up near the water. 58 degrees at 5:00 p.m. as you make your way home hopefully pour the abbreviated workweek. let's check your drive right now. stick around for the seven day outlook. 5:38. mike, how are we doing out
5:39 am
there? >> it's a pre holiday weekend. highway 4 shows the slowing, speeds into the 30s as you're traveling between hillcrest and loveridge. it fluctuates back and forth. closer to 40 in most spots than 30. that's better than we often see. looking at slowing at bay point as well. queueing the fact that concord will see slowdowns in 40 to 30 minutes. north bay times travel is very nice right now. no slowing from highway 12 through novato and continuing down to the golden gate bridge. a live look out there shows you the bay bridge which is an easy flow of traffic down the eastshore freeway. no backups here. looking at the reports on the computer. just getting report of an accident? san jose. i'll show that to you in the next reporting coming up. >> thank you very much, mike. another week, another showdown between the gop presidential candidates. we'll tell you which candidate is breaking away from the pack when it comes to immigration. hundreds turn out to remember the danville marine who died while serving his country.
