in, not only did the line go up 48th street to fifth avenue but then went as ann said, six or seven city blocks to the north. those people have now filled in 48th street and i have a feeling if you're commuting in this area this morning, you are out of luck. >> that's right. this is actually one of i think the biggest concerts ever for the "today" show. meanti meantime the crowds are also gathering on the airports and roads because this is a huge time for people to travel. the thanksgiving rush is beginning. we want to find out about what the weather is going to be like. we'll go inside to al to talk about that. al, what can you tell us about the travel? >> ann and matt take a look. this is the pacific northwest, that's our one big trouble spot. snoqualmie pass, i-90 closed yesterday and they reopened it for a bit but it may close again today because we're expecting snow in that area. let's move a little further south to portland, oregon. snow not the problem but heavy

winds and heavy rain, causing flooding, cars being forced to drive through standing water and they're looking at more rain again today. let's go to the radar, you'll see exactly what's going on, heavy rain stretching from northern california all the way on up into seattle. rainfall amounts along the coast with 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts, we're talking anywhere from one to four inches of rain, four to six inches of snow and as we move east airport delays in seattle, portland, san francisco for rain and wind. here in the east we've got rain stretching from florida, all the way up to boston, snow in new england, and we've got a lot of snow to talk about, up to 12 inches of snow or more in parts of northern new england, and the rainfall amounts we're talking anywhere from one to three inches of rain, so not only are you going to have problems at the airports, boston, new york city, newark, philly, washington, atlanta, they're going to be looking at gusty winds. traveling along the i-95

those will be driving, 40% of those on thanksgiving day itself. the big volume is wednesday today and sunday, the end of the holiday weekend. some people know about the bad news of course having to do with gas prices up about 49 cents a gallon over this time last year. some good news, the roadworks guys are taking the holiday weekend off, too, so you won't have those obstructions at all and also the weather in the northeast as al said is likely going to clear this afternoon. break out the long version of "stairway to heaven" wait, i'm dating myself. >> mike taibbi in queens this morning, thank you. happy thanksgiving as well. how are things looking at the airports? nbc's tom costello is at reagan international airport. >> reporter: good morning. the rough economy, high jet fuel prices forced the airlines to cut back on the number of planes in service at any given moment. if you are flying right now or over the coming days expect the plane to be packed.

morning, thanks a lot. happy thanksgiving to you. let's go over to the news desk. natalie has a check of the top stories of the morning. good morning to you. >> good morning matt and ann and good morning, everyone. massive protests continue in cairo's tahrir square. they have the country's military seeking an exit strategy this morning. this as three american students are detained by officials there for allegedly joining those protesters. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in tahrir square with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. u.s. embassy officials in cairo are meeting with them today and were present yesterday as they were questioned by egyptian authorities for allegedly throwing molotov cocktails at security forces. on the ground, clashes are continuing today, as the egyptian military is seeking to deescalate this crisis, offering to hold early presidential elections. many political parties in this country are accepting that compromise, but here in the

square, the protesters say it's not enough. they want an immediate transfer of authority to civilian rule, so a standoff continues. >> richard engel in tahrir square, thank you. in yemen, state tv reports that president ali abdullah sal saleh bowed to protest to leave office. he's signing a power deal in exchange for immunity from prosecution. two new child abuse charges have been launched against jerry sandusky. peter alexander, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are learning about two new child abuse sexual allegations against jerry sandusky. in both cases the victims are still believed to be under the age of 18. the "harrisburg patriot news" reports this morning the two cases have been opened by child and youth services here in pennsylvania within the last two months. now if they are found to be

credible, this could raise some serious questions about why authorities waited until the end of a three-year grand jury investigation to arrest jerry sandusky. today there are new indications the penn state scandal may include obstruction of justice, according to a source familiar with the investigation, pennsylvania state prosecutors filed a secret motion in july to hold sandusky's charity, it's called the second mile, in contempt, after the organization failed to turn over sandusky's subpoenaed expense records. the motion was later withdrawn but some of those documents that may have contained details about sandusky's relationships with the second mile children, natalie, are still missing. >> peter alexander at state college, thanks so much, peter. unbelievable accident caught on tape this morning in a busy area of auckland, new zealand. the helicopter was installing a christmas tree, it got caught in some cables, snapping the tail and crashing to the ground. you see that guy in a are rowly

paid thousands of dollars to take the s.a.t. or a.c.t. exam for other kids. >> reporter: did you cheat on the s.a.t. snz. >> reporter: the students turned themselves in tuesday morning. they're all graduates of high schools in nassau county. the trio pled not guilty to charges of scheme to defraud, falsifying business records and criminal impersonation. >> we now know that this kind of cheating is really very easy to do, because of inadequate security procedures at test centers. >> reporter: these are the students accused of paying as much as $3,500 to have the test taken for them. they ran out of court tuesday with their faces covered. they're all facing misdemeanor charges because they're minors. attorneys representing the students say that this is not a criminal matter. >> the criminal justice system is not the place to push an agenda on the backs of schoolchildren. >> we teach our kids it's okay to cheat on wall street, it's okay to take steroids and get into the nfl, it's okay to gain

what we now define as success as money, gain it by cheating, when we teach our kids, we're condoning this type of action. i don't feel it's right to prosecute them. >> reporter: administrators at great neck north high, one of the nation's top high schools uncovered the cheating scandal back in september. they noticed some test scores didn't add up. seven students were arrested then. their cases still pending. now, the high stakes big money problem is growing, and people who live in this upscale community aren't surprised. >> in this town, it's the normal. you know, when you have money you can get whatever you want. it's not what you know, it's who you know, right? >> the at the end of the day every s.a.t. grade from our school is going to have to be taken with a grain of salt because of these kids. it's not fair. >> reporter: if convicted the accused test takers could face up to four years in prison. right now the d.a. here is currently working on legislation to reform the standardized testing process, while the s.a.t. is currently reviewing

up your holiday table this year. we begin with the latest on the natalie wood death investigation, two people connected to the 1981 case are now speaking out. nbc's miguel almaguer is in los angeles with details on this. hi, miguel. >> good morning. natalie wood's death was a high profile case 30 years ago, thrust back into the national spotlight last week when investigators said they would reopen the case. 30 years after natalie wood drowned, a potential witness tells nbc news she was interviewed tuesday by detectives for the first time, some three decades after woods' death was ruled an accident. marilyn wayne says her boat was 90 feet away from the "splendour" the night wood died. she spoke to cbs news. >> i heard a woman calling for help "help me, somebody please help me, i'm drowning. "wayne tells nbc news she never saw wood in the water but says police should have interviewed her about wood 30 years ago.

good morning. it's 7:56 right now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. major traffic problems to report on the peninsula. a crash on 101 causing major delays in the southbound direction. christie smith joins us live by sfo with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this accident was cleared out of here maybe ten to 15 minutes ago, southbound 101 right near the airport. it created a big backup, a big mess. here we are the day before thanksgiving. the drivers going northbound, the cars flipped over into the south lanes. unknown condition of the driver this morning. wanted to mention for those headed to sfo, this could be a real problem because the spokesperson is saying the planes are basically full and you want to do your best to get here on time.

they're not holding any planes waiting for anyone. the only way that would happen is if a crew member is still stuck in traffic. that's the latest from here. reporting live from sfo. it happens to be the busiest travel day of the year. i want to check in with mike with a look at the morning commute. >> on the roads and in the air. this is affecting both. as christie said, all lanes of 101 cleared at the scene. the northbound side cleared earlier than the southbound side. we still have slowing approaching the sfo exit. a lot of folks using 280 as your alternate. that's over on your left over towards 380. that's a little unusual. slowing out of san francisco through business bane and approaching 380 as well. speeds closer to 50. there's a 40. allow extra time heading to sfo. if you're going to sfo or oakland, b.a.r.t. has extended the trains, longer trains for today and sunday. keep that in mind. the air b.a.r.t. from the oakland coliseum station to the oakland airport runs every 10 to

carson's development was slower than his brother's, on thanksgiving week in 2003, his mom became alarmed. >> i couldn't figure out why he just kept crying. he would throw up. he was really sick. >> reporter: after a few doctor's visits, one immedia pediatrician was determined to find the problem. >> she kept feeling husband hid and asking him questions and decided to send us to a local hospital. >> reporter: a ct revealed a mask, doctors didn't know it was a tumor or brain defect. they told the family at carson's age nothing could be done. >> i can't describe the feeling that i had as a mom. and i didn't want them to take him from me and just can't imagine losing him. >> reporter: after two months of tests, doctors did a biopsy, carson was diagnosed with nodular meduloblastoma, a type of brain cancer. he was referred to st. jude. >> there was nothing you could do for a birth defect and they

told me there was something we could do, we would go to st. jude and he had a 30% chance of survival. >> carson had a specific type of megaloblastoma and we recognize this particular tumor is common in infants, but the outcome for these patients is very good. >> reporter: after the tumor was removed, carson's parents had a tough decision to make, should they allow radiation to maximize his chance of survival? >> we knew that radiation was so hard on babies, because their brain's not developed. >> reporter: carson was given a type of radiation that focused on the tumor alone, while preserving most of his devel developing brain. >> we decided that we could work through any cognitive problems that it caused. we just needed to make sure we had our carson. >> reporter: after treatment, carson developed at a slow but steady pace. his twin brother, cameron, was a huge part of his recovery. >> he had to keep up and figure out what camson is doing.

he learned to work and took first steps and now we laugh and say he doesn't know how to walk. he runs everywhere he goes. >> reporter: despite the amazing progress, more challenges were ahead for carson. earlier this year, a routine mri revealed a second brain cancer. >> i just lost it in the halls of st. jude. >> reporter: the cancer turned out to be meningioma. >> those tumors are characteristic of patients who have had exposure to radiation therapy and most instances curable by surgery. >> reporter: this time radiation was not used. >> pediatric oncology is evolving always. >> reporter: carson bounced back quickly from the surgery. he gives credit to st. jude's. >> take some yucky, yucky stuff out and make me feel better. >> reporter: his parents say that although the radiation may have caused the second tumor, it also very well may have saved carson's life. they don't look back on their decision to allow it.

native to north america in celebration of thanks giving. >> that's right. thanksgiving is a north american holiday. national wildlife federation actually focuses our work in north america. we have a new campaign called choose your cause that lets you pick what animals you want to protect. our first animal -- >> he's not being protected this year. >> he's a wild turkey. this is the only domesticated animal -- >> why are you holding him? >> -- that has come out of north america. >> why is he holding him? you did that on purpose! >> turkeys can fly. people don't think that they can. wild turkeys can fly. they walk around on the ground for the most part but they spend the night up in the trees. they have to be able to fly also to get away from their predators. this is the wild version of the turkey that we eat. it was domesticated originally in mexico, brought back to europe and really bred. and then the european colonists actually brought it back. it's possible that it was on the first thanksgiving dinner plate. the records just say fowl. it might have been duck. look at the color on this

"today's holiday kitchen" is brought to you by ocean spray. tastes good, good for you. >> time to head into "today's holiday kitchen." if you need help with your menu, consider the job done. >> if you're still looking for sides, scott conan's got them. chef and owner of scarpeto's restaurant. glad you weren't downstairs with us. it was scary, what happened. >> we've got to show you. maybe you could do a size dish of turkey. >> look at the bird! when it was over, oh, oh, oh! he's fine. >> he's fine. >> feathers grow back. >> tell that to the bird. >> he feels naked. what are we making, scott? >> that was so apptizing. >> because we're so hungry after that segment. >> good thing we're not doing turkey. we're doing a couple sides today. one of the things that we're doing is a -- kind of an autumn harvest casserole. so we have some eggs whisked here. i've roasted these vegetables. we throw the kale on top. finish it back in the oven for a few minutes. we put it in a casserole dish.

>> what did you do? where'd you put the kale? >> the kale goes directly on top. we make this kind of custard mixture, this royale. cream inside. >> it was so healthy until you did this. >> what's that? parm? >> parmesan cheese. >> of course. >> roasted garlic inside there as well. >> bring it. >> freshly grated nutmeg. freshly grated nutmeg makes all the difference. >> does it? i don't know that i'd know if i tasted it. >> you would know it. >> okay. >> we take this beautiful light royale mixture. very light. >> pour it right over there. >> over these beautiful vegetables. we'll pop it in the oven. the importance of a water bath, i think, is really a good thing here. because we'll put it in the water bath, put it in the oven for about a half hour at 350 degrees. and then turn it around and finish it for an additional ten minutes. >> kath, you want to try? >> yep. >> i don't think i can do it. >> oh, my gosh. >> it's good, right?

>> really healthy for you. >> the water bath again, why do that? >> it just really makes the temperature nice and even for the entire cooking time. >> what's the next side dish we're making? >> caramelized onions with potatoes. really simple. one of those things you can put it in the oven and kind of forget about it. that's the convenience of cooking for the holidays. you need to make things as simple as possible. >> garlic. fresh red pepper. >> we'll let that get brown color on those potatoes. a touch of chicken stock inside there. braise that in the oven for a little while. >> how long does that cook for? >> this will cook 20 minutes or so, it should be completely done. this is what you end up with. >> that looks good. >> roasted carrots with hazel nuts over the top. touch of chives. >> i can't eat an onion like that. it's got to be with something else. >> it's with potatoes. >> i'll try a potato. >> scott, delicious.
