my favorite. good morning, everyone. 4:30. jon kelley has the day often. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. rob, good morning. >> good thanksgiving morning to you. we have rain across the bay area this morning. especially the north bay towards the bay. this is mainly light rain. good enough to wet the roadways around san francisco and oakland. 680 to san jose light rains at times. rain will change over to scattered showers. we'll see temperatures climbing into the weekend. >> good to have you here, rob. it's 4:31 now. an emotional night for the college basketball team. >> reporter: with heavy hearts the basketball team played wednesday, but it was a huge

loss for the team. >> our motto is not to play forward but to play differently. >> he died two weeks after a crash in milbray. devonte was in the car with him. he watched the team's first game since the crash on the sideline wearing a walking boot. >> that's how i keep myself going. >> the teammate billy herd was the driver of the car and is still in the hospital. friends and classmates came out to gavilan to cheer them on. >> you have to fight for those

who can't fight anymore. after making a spirited comeback from 17 points down, the gavilan rams fell a little short. just to be on the court playing a game they love after so much adversity is seen in their eyes as a win. >> the team says they're trying to move on. nbc bay area news. >> lost too young. devont devo devonte johnson is out for the rest of the season. they're continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. the toxicology report showed the driver was not on drugs or drinking. the case against former bart police officer johannes mehserle and four current officers on hold until monday. before the court recessed for the thanksgiving break, mehserle took the stand, defending himself against accusations he

beat kenneth carrethers during an arrest. mehserle told the jury carrethers was unruly and afraid he would attack another ufrs. ka roet e carrethers says mehserle used excessive force. a group of homeowners whose homes were damaged in a land side have filed suit against their names and the city. the three homes were damaged on march 24th during a mud slide. the homeowners filed suit against six homes on the street above them, saying they failed to take care of their property and maintain drainage system that contributed to the slide. it also claimed they were given notice well in advance that the slide could happen. the city has so far not commented on the issue. >> disappointment, anger, confusion in east palo alto. engineers told city leaders stop

signs are not needed at an intersection where a little girl was killed on the way to school. we take a closer look at a story we first brought you on wednesday. >> reporter: 2 months after a 6-year-old is hit and killed on a crosswalk, members of the city council are eager to make safety improvements. a consultant tells them stop signs may not be the answer. the mayor says they are still an option. in a crosswalk, maria, her mother and sister hurry across bay roads. day or night, they say the intersection at bay and gloria is dangerous. >> when she crosses, some people drive a little crazy, so she has to stop. zbr in east palo alto hit and killed a 6-year-old as she walked to school with her mother in september. will is a crosswalk, but no stop signs on bay.

they say a three-way stop would make it safer. >> there could be another accident. >> east palo alto mayor agrees something needs to be done. >> never, ever again should there be a tragic accident like what occurred. >> the city has added signs. they say based on state guideline it's not recommending guidelines. advice the mayor says the counsel will consider. >> yeah, we've only had four accidents. you need five or six before it triggers a stop sign, that doesn't mean we shouldn't have a stop sign there. >> and the stop sign will be debated, but he expects others will be a light-up crosswalk. larger school crossing signs. expanding the no parking zone near the crosswalk, and adding

service on christmas eve and new year's. >> let's check the forecast with rob maeada. >> rain in the east bay starting to reach the santa clara valley. a little cool. but not too bad. rain is really the big story for your thanksgiving morning. now we have a weather system that's weakening as it crosses over the bay area. still enough moisture left to bring us rain around us. substantial rain was seen at the altamont pass. you can see light rain falling down highway 17 towards san francisco. so it will split apart. part of it diving to southern california. the first half of the, hour by hour, you'll noticed scattered showers in the east bay hills. as we head to the afternoon and the evening things start to dry out in the bay area with some clearing and maybe some showers late tonight. but after today things start to

dry out. this morning rain in the east bay and south bay. rain changes to showers around lunchtime. things will watch up with matchy fog. >> thousands of volunteerses. the church is ready to feed families 5,000. starting with the thanksgiving meal. we'll check in with him a little bit later in this newscast. 4:39 now. a dream come true for the bay area marching band. they will start marching in the 85th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade. >> once in a lifetime.

military and nuclear programs. iran has not released information about the alleged capture, and the u.s. has not commented on the claim. the defense attorneys for conrad murray say the doctor is already serving a lifetime punishment of self punishment. they're asking a judge to sentence murray to probation and community service in the medical field. prosecutors say murray showed no remorse for jackson's death and placed the blame on others. prosecutors want a four-year prison sentence for murray. murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. credit and debit card reads at 20 bay area stores were compromised. lucky says someone tamperred with the readers at the self checkout lanes. it's not clear in the bad guys got any banking information, and if they did, it does not appear they used any of it. for a full list of stores

affected in the bay area, you can visit our website, nbcbayarea.com and search lucky. 4:44. this guy is making national headlines for all the wrong reasons. the young man who broke into an iowa mcdonald's after one too many drinks speaks out. he turned himself into police after he broke into a cedar falls mcdonald's over the weekend. security cameras caught the 21-year-old climbing through the window. he admits he was drunk, but he still manages to operate a deep fryer, even though he's not worked in a restaurant. he said he was sorry and he hopes the incident will not change his college graduation plans. >> i regret it all. it's really messed up a lot of my life. my career plans and everything like that. it's something really tough on me. it screwed up a lot of my career

plans at this point in time. >> police slapped him with several charges of burglary, criminal mischief and theft. >> i use to live in cedar falls for a short period of part-titi >> the weather your thanksgiving morning, if you're headed out, you'll finds a little bit of rain. by november standards this isn't that big of a deal for san jose. just enough to wet the ground in a few areas. southeast wind at 12 miles per hour. in san francisco you're seeing 55 degrees southeast winds at 9 miles per hour.

northeast at 5 and fairfield. and a bit of a rainy start. mainly light rain. already decreasing to the north bay. as we head to the afternoon, the showers should shut down. by the evening things will dry out in the bay area. for the evening plans, watching what's happening at the har-bowl in baltimore, maryland, should see low 50s game time in maryland. close to home we have the turkey trot. temperatures in the mid-50s. 24-hour rainfall totals, really the inner bay not getting a whole lot. san francisco and oakland less th than .05 inch. you can see it from dublin to livermore. san jose still seeing light rain this morning before the system drives down to southern california. so this is a weakening weather system. main impact felt between now and noon. then things start to clear out

through the afternoon and the rest of the holiday forecast, actually, looks pretty nice. temperatures in the upper 50s for most of the bay area. 58 for livermore. northbay temperatures should be mainly in the mid 50s. once we get past today, tomorrow maybe morning drizzle on the coast. then mid 50s. a dry forecast saturday through the middle part of next week. think small, not big tomorrow. that's the message from bay area retailers. local merchants want buyers to flex their shopping muscle at mom and pop shops. they've coined a new phrase for the post thanksgiving day frenzy plaid friday. jodi hernandez has that story. >> these come from old car seats, basically. 1974 mustang. >> randy brewer shows us the unique gift options they have to offer.

so-called har-bowl will start. jim harbaugh and his 49ers ready to take on his brother john. it's going to be a tough test for the 49ers. heir going up against the ravens who have yet to lose at home. san francisco is running on an eight-game winning streak. the har-bowl starts at 5:20. >> the parents say they're not coming to the game at all so they don't have to show a favorite. a couple of fan favorites may not be back with the giants. san francisco will not offer salary arbitration to cody ross or pat burell. that means the team will not get anything if either player signs with another team. ross is the nl champion series mvp during the giants run for the world series title. burrel is a local guy. you can get giants hot stove news 365 days a year on the giants tab. >> it wasn't a high scoring

brown. now investigators say the car was stolen and the gun was found, they say, near where the 20-year-old was sitting. it is 4:55. you may remember us telling you about a half dozen puppies abandoned. now a seventh pup has turned up. authorities say they believe the additional pup comes for the same litter as the six other australian sheep dog puppies. humane officers believe whoever abandoned them drove them to a recycling center where they were dumped near a fence. the good news is they are blossoming under spc's care. the bad news for the perpetrator who could face jail and a $20,000 fine. the city of santa cruz is getting national recognition for getting ahead of the bad guys. "time" magazine says the program to predict crime is one of the 50 best inventions of the year. the program uses earthquake aftershock models to determine

where future crimes will take place. basically, the program predicts there will be after crimes following an initial crime. other gadgets featured on the "time" magazine list include the ipad and the electric car. it's in good company there. . >> it's just amazing they can predict crimes, those computers. it is 4:57. she was cuffed into the back of a cop car, seconds later driving the thing. an east bay arrest that ended with a chase coming up. plus getting ready for an annual holiday tradition. they're setting up for the macy's thanksgiving day parade. we'll have a live report from the big apple this morning.
