this morning. watching the rain drops flying around the bay area. we have a weather system getting stretched across the north bay. you're seeing the rain shut down already for places like santa rosa. you notice the east bay hills down to san jose, that's where we're seeing the rain this morning. so 8:00, we'll certainly have cloudy skies and rain to start your day. then by lunchtime rain changing over to showers and by 4:00 not too bad. upper 50s, some clearing skies and a warmer weekend ahead. we'll have a look at the complete forecast in a few minutes. >> get the brew going for rob, too. hundreds of people lining up at glide memorial church in san francisco. >> they'll all be treated to the annual thanksgiving breakfast and dinner. damien trujillo is live at glide with more on the special feast. always great to see. good morning, damien. >> good morning, laura and scott. a couple of people lining up. the doors open up at 7:00 a.m. you can see the ham is ready. the volunteers show up at 7:00

a.m. the carving stations are next door. that's where they will begin their prep work for this annual tradition here at glide memorial. this is the vegetable aisle. this is where the bell peppers will be chopped up at 7:00. 5,000 people they're expecting to feed this morning and then later on early this afternoon. let me bring in, if i can, jean cooper. she's with glide. let me take a guess and say what you have this year is more demand and fewer donations. is that the case this year? >> it's true. we're seeing a lot more families and people who may have not in the past come to glide for our services showing up this year. and the money situation, funding situation is pretty dire out there. so we're working overtime to try to get enough resources to serve the people that come. >> 5,000. that's a lot of mouths. >> yeah, it's an annual thing now. we're getting used to it. but we have a lot of people showing up today. >> what would you do without the help of volunteers?

we have about 600 volunteers out here. >> we would be working really hard. so the volunteers that come to glide actually supply us with most of the labor to do the work that we do. right now we only have 16 people that work in the kitchen. it's not enough to serve 5,000 people. >> what does this tell you about the need in this nation, the fact that every year we seem to see thousands of people lining up. every day they need more help. >> well, it's pretty dire actually, we've seen an increased need over the last five years. i've been here for six years. every year is worse. and you see more extreme cases. and you also see people that you never would think would be here. so it's pretty sad, actually. but i feel grateful that i can be a part of the solution. >> they'll be here in less than an hour to begin their prep work. and then the meals begin being

served at 7:00 a.m. johannes mehserle said he feared a man was going to attack another officer in the incident at the coliseum station. mehserle said he was sure 43-year-old kenneth carrethers was going to hit another officer on the head. mehserle said he grabbed carrethers to keep him away from the officer. mehserle and four other bart officers are defendants in the lawsuit. this was three weeks before mehserle shot and killed an unarmed man at the fruitvale location. it's 5:05. east palo alto city leaders say something must be done to prevent another tragedy at a dangerous intersection. some of the advice issed aing more confusion. the intersection at bay and glor ya was the scene for a number of

pedestrian-involved accidents, including the recent death of a 6-year-old girl. the city added a reflective sign to warn drivers, but the community says more should be done. a consulting firm hired by the city is recommending to not install stop signs due to a technicality with state laws. it's something residents are calling for. the city council will consider all advice. >> yeah, we've only had four accidents. you need to have five six before it triggers a stop sign. that doesn't mean we shouldn't have a stop sign there. >> the next meeting is scheduled for next week. 5:05. a california lawmaker is taking action in the wake of the penn state child sex abuse scandal. he introduced legislation yesterday that would require all university athletic directors and coaches to report suspected child abuse to law enforcement. the bill would also increase penalties for those who fail to

do so up to 12 months in jail and $5,000 fine. former football coach jerry sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys. head coach joe paterno was fired after the university trustees determined he did not do enough to report the alleged abuse. a warning for people who shop at safemart. store officials say customers at several bay area stores had their personal banking information stolen. employees found credit and dent card readers had been tamperred with at the self checkout lanes at 19 lucky stores. one safemark location. new security measures were added to every one of these chains, 234 stores. if you're a customer you're advised to monitor your bank account for suspicious activity. a woman is in custody after stealing two cars in concord. one of them a concord police cruiser. concord police say they pulled

the woman over at 10:30 last night on farm bureau road near chestnut. she was arrested for stolen property and illegal drug possession. she was handcuffed and seated in a patrol car. she managed to climb into the driver's seat of the cruiser and drive off. she managed to get about a mile, where she ran off, attempting to hide inside a house. police took her back into custody. no major glitches for the millions of thanksgiving travelers who hit the railways, roadways and airways. 42.5 million americans traveled for the holiday this year. maybe a good economic indicator. it's the highest number of travelers since the height of the recession. a large number of travelers comes despite higher cost. last year both air fare and gas prices are up 20% this year. 5:07. for years it's been a thanksgiving day tradition in san jose. the silicon valley turkey trot. thousands of runners will converge for a great cause.

bob redell is live in downtown san jose with more on what's happening. good morning, bob. >> scott, you and i have both been in silicon valley for years. to see this where it first started to where it is today is tremendous given the fact it is now a tradition. when the silicon valley turkey trot started seven years ago, carl, head of the silicon valley leadership group was hoping for maybe 1,000 runners. he ended up with 2,000. 21,000 people are registered for the 7th annual turkey trot. that's a ten-fold increase in a short amount of time. that means the registration is full. if you're thinking of walking up and signing up, it's too late. if you are racing. 6:30 a.m., in about an hour and a half is where you going to be starting to pick up your bib ls outside the hp pavilion. they'll do that from 6:30 # to 8:00. at 7:50, the 10k run.

then the 5k walk and run. this is all for charities. it's been about six years since the race started. they raised $1.5 million for three local charities. they're hoping to add to that chunk of the change. the santa clara county children's health initiative. if you are racing today, the organizers are asking you bring four canned goods of food to donate to charity. they're trying to reach 15,000 pounds today. scott, laura, happy thanksgiving by the way. >> thank you very much. >> and actually, it's pretty decent weather for the turkey trot. >> right now we're seeing the worst of it, and it's not all that bad. we have what we sometimes call hairspray rain, real fine drizzle coming down. a little cool as we get the day started. as we go through the morning near guadalupe park, should see temperatures in the upper 50s

around 11:00 and some sun in the afternoon. and most of the rain has been in the north bay. look at san francisco, oakland and san jose. just enough to wet the ground. as we're seeing a system here, your eyes are not deceiving you, it is getting stretched across the bay area. upper level winds taking the frj off to the north and to the south. right now the north bay is seeing pockets of light rain. certainly rain for san francisco where it's 55 degrees. see a southeast wind at 9 miles per hour. over to the east bay you can see the rain following you down sunol towards san jose. lighter rain falling at times. this will be the trend the first half of the day. then we should see clearing. this is ha slow moving system. the future cast does pick this up by the afternoon. we should start to see some clearing. next system bringing drizzle to the north bay coastline as we head into tomorrow morning. highs the today will be running cool, even with the few sunny breaks we seef. upper 50s by the tri valley.

u. welcome back, everyone. a deadly plane crash is caught on tape in arizona. chilling security video shows a small plane crashing near phoenix. the six passengers including three children died on impact. the crash then sparked a wildfire that in the area. the rescue crews had to be air lifted to the very rugged terrain. they say it looks like the plane disintegrated when it crashed.

the rockwell was based close to phoenix. lawyers for michael jackson want them to have probation rather than a prison sentence. the doctor is already serving a lifetime sentence of self punishment. they're asking a judge to sentence murray to probation and community service in the medical field but prosecutors say murray showed no remorse and placed the blame on others. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of jackson earlier this month. republican presidential candidate michele bachmann has received an apology from nbc following an offcolored song played during her appearance on late night with jimmy fallon. she received a personal letter from an nbc executive who said the incident was unfortunate and unacceptable. fallon also spoke with bachmann

expressing his regret. earlier she spoke out. this television station, of course, is owned by nbc. 5:15 now. one lucky turkey will not be on the thanksgiving table during this holiday season. president obama spared the bird on wednesday. the president accompanied by his daughters pardoned liberty during a ceremony at the white house. liberty, the bird and another turkey will spend their time at george washington's farm and estate. president obama also wished the country happy holidays and to keep our service members in their thoughts. another thanksgiving tradition in new york city. ing the it's thanksgiving morning. that's the macy's parade. the giant balloons. inflated ready to make the route through the street.

avenue r avril lavine and some newcomers as well. we'll go live to new york city in 20 minutes to see how things are looking. >> meteorologist rob maeda is in for christina this morning. >> trying to dry hout the forecast around here. it's dried out in new york. yesterday we had travel delays due to the fact that we had snow and rain in the northeast. let's take you to radar view. you'll she in a moment that the northeast is dried out. that's a view of the golden gate bridge. you have wet roadways closer to home. there's new york. notice things have cleared out. that's good news for the macy's parade. you'll see that here on nbc bay area. dry, and also keeping an eye onball more. kind of a big game today. the har-bowl. we'll see temperatures in baltimore in the low 50s. mostly clear, cool, excellent football weather later on this evening. actually, 5:20, our time out here in the west coast. we have 40s and 50s outside right now. still seeing rain, not much wind

out there. but we have over the bay area is a system really falling apart at the finish line as it crosses over the bay area. we did get half an inch of rain in the north bay. notice things have moved off. in san francisco, yes, it's enough to wet the roadways this morning. so use caution if you're heading outside. in the east bay you can see the rain. probably the most rain we're seeing in the bay area. right from castro valley to livermore. maybe light rain in san jose. as a lot of the energy of the system for the afternoon dives to southern california. so the future cast shows that things start to dry out for the afternoon. other than a few sprinkles across the far north bay late tomorrow, it looks like things will trend drier towards the weekend. so high temperatures today running in the 50s. not too bad with partial clearing and temperatures actually cool for the north bay. mid 50s in hillsberg. seven day forecast takes you through the holiday weekend on a warming and dry note.

the weather system moving into the bay area. it's going to bring cold wet weather along with it. but nbc bay area's cheryl herd caught up with dedicated shoppers and trotter who is are bracing for the storm. >> from the south bay to the east bay, people are willing to weather a storm for a good deal. >> we trying to buy tvs and xbox's and all that. >> francisco is the first in line at the best buy store. he's got black friday fever. he's willing to get wet to cash in on some low prices. we have everything prepared just in case it rains. we have covers. we have tents. we have more than that. tarps and things like that. >> the owner of it's all good bakery in oakland says he was concerned about his customers on this thanksgiving eve. he anticipated a lot of rain and he knew they would have to stand in it.

do the turkey trot. there's a turkey trot in san jose as well. bob is out there. >> this black friday bay area retailers are urging clientele to think small, not so large. local merchants are asking credit card wielding, bargain hunting shoppers to flex their muscles and mom and pop shop. they've coined a new phrase. they're calling it plaid friday. >> old car seats from 1978 ford mustang turned into a coin purse, watches, vegan shoes from recycled fabrics. just a few items you can buy at the berkeley boutique. they're hoping folks bypass the big box stores and bring their hard-earned cash to locally owned shops. >> we really want to promote just going to your neighborhood first. for resources for holiday shopping, for anything that you need. going -- putting your community

basketball team hit the court for the first time since a teammate died. they are also without devonte johnson and billy herd. both were in the same car with gaines when they got into an accident. johnson watched the game from the bench. it's a great challenge for the team. >> i can take them to help them move on. and those guys did that today. >> the chp will continue to investigate the crash. the driver, billy herd, not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. gavilan fell short last night. they lost 56-53. it is 5:33. a group of homeowners whose homes were damaged have filed

suit against their neighbors and the city of san pablo. the three homes were damaged during a slide on march 24th. they say they failed to keep up the property and maintain drainage systems that contributed to the slide. they also claims they were given notice well in advance that the slide could happen. the city has not commented on the issue. crab probably will not be on the thanksgiving menu this year unless you're willing to go catch it yourself. many of them used the traditional nest. but here you see some used unconventional methods. it did work. for goodness sake. i have been called wrong here. crab season has been delayed because fishermen and seafood distributors are locked in a pricing dispute. they want $2.50 per pound for their catch. distributors only want to pay $2. the family of injured giants

fan bryan stow says they have a lot to be thankful for this thanksgiving. in a an update on the plog, stow's family says he's working hard. when asked if he wants to take a break, he usually says no. while he struggles to remember answers to some questions, he remembers the most important things in life. well most of us will be stuffed with thanksgiving treats. hundreds will create room by burning calorie miss the turkey trot. that includes, perhaps, bob redell. he is live in downtown san jose. got the running shoes on? >> my brain thinks it's a good idea. i don't know if my stomach would be on board with all the cramping involved. good morning to you. just off the hp pavilion near the start line of the seventh annual silicon volley turkey trot.

to the point where they are today. you can't do day of signups. first time you haven't been able to do that. steve wright, you were surprised how many people showed up. >> hour stretch goal was 17,500. now we're at 21,000 in the 5k and 10k. that's not including the thousand kids that are renl stered for the fun run at 10:00 today. so it's really closer to 22,000 people we'll have down here this morning. >> why do you think this is becoming so popular and such a tradition? >> it's become a community event. there are really hardcore people running. a vast majority of people come down and walk the 5k. it's a three hoof mile walk. they come down with grandma, the extended family, the boyfriend, the girlfriends. people enjoy having fresh air, exercise. we don't sell anything. nobody is trying to get your money. it's all about getting exercise

and fresh air. >> should this be held in the evening after you have eaten? >> i think most people -- health nutritionists say it's a good idea to stretch in the morning. pace yourself into the thanksgiving meal, is. >> and it's raising money for three charities. so if you showed up today they're asking for four canned goods. today you're thinking about 2.2 million over the pags seven years. that's tremendous. >> last year we raised 450,000. this year we plan to raise $600,000 for second harvest food bank, the health trust of santa clara county and the children's health initiative. >> happy thanksgiving, steve. stay dry out there. rain or shine it's going to be going on.

you can't sign up this morning? >> no, 17,500 was the goal. they've got too many. capacity is full. you can cheer on your favorite grandma or grandfathers running. >> this is a completely different fib today. >> bring on the pie. that's all i know. let's check in with rob maeda. >> the forecast for the turkey trot doesn't look that bad. mid 50s. temperature wise not too bad. we have a little bit of light rain. we'll see showers shut down as we get closer 11:00. 40s and 50s outside. it is breezy. you can see we still have rain moving across the bay area. most of the substantial rain falling now across the east bay hills. off to the east, light to moderate rain in the golden gate bridge. you can find that rain 60 south. here you go, downtown san jose looking at mainly light rain.

nbc bay area. >> last night pizza was the meal of choice. pizza joints were hopping last night because sometimes people take a break from all the cooking, i think, everybody getting ready to create the feast. >> nobody wants to cook tonight. the stuff they've got done is still in the kitchen waiting for tomorrow. a lot of college students reuniting. he's making headlines for all the wrong reasons. the ayman who broke into a mcdonald's speaks out. he's known as the real life hamburglar. whitney teslo turned himself into police after he broke into a cedar falls mcdonald's over the weekend. security cams ra caught the 21-year-old climbing through the
