happens, there's a disabled vehicle. it might affect the on-ramp. most folks are focusing on the off-ramp because there's a mall there. we'll be checking the mall traffic. we'll do parking lot patrol coming up when the chopper hits the air. back to you. we start you off with an update for breaking news. there's been a shooting in the wal-mart out there. let's go live to monte francis covering the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we just got an update from police. a man is in critical but stable condition following in the shooting in the parking lot. at 1:50 a.m. police responded to reports of shots fired in the parking lot of wal-mart. they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was taken to a nearby hospital. police have arrested a man in his 20s, but are still looking

for at least one more person wanted in connection with the shooting. they tell us a family was just leaving wal-mart with their purchases when they were approached by a group of armed robbers. when a male member resisted the robbers shot him and police are now interviewing witnesses. right now police aren't sure if the man they have in dis is the shooter or not. >> you know, whenever you have a lot of shoppers on a day like today. people get angry. things like this happen. wal-mart has since reopened, but the parking lot is closed. police are talking to witnesses, and they are working on a description of the robbers. and we will keep you posted with any new developments. monty francis, "today in the bay." many stores have already

been open for hours. take toys "r" us and fremont, for example. they opened the doors at 9:00 last night. shoppers told us that they spent their thanksgiving night in line. >> this year they're turning thursday night into friday. so you can get the things and enjoy it on friday. >> good way to work off the turkey dinner. some of the folks at toys "r" us got their gifts and then headed to bed. things less orderly at a wal-mart in southern california. a woman used pepper spray on fellow shoppers inside a wal-mart. as the crowd rushed in for a deal on video games. firefighters treated at least ten people with injuries ranking from burning eyes to difficulty

breathing. they were eventually loud back inside to continue their shopping. black friday, and yes, all the festivities go along with it. many shoppers have been out for hours since yesterday. bob redell is live in san jose where things are calm still, is that right, bob? >> reporter: yeah, good morning marla and jon. normally on this time we would be covering the mad rush into a store like best buy. but best buy and other retailers decided to open up earlier this year at midnight, and it seems like it might have paid off. some of the door buster deals, people were coming for $2 $200 42-inch lcd tv. a $300 laptop.

occupy oakland after a scuffle between police and protesters. protesters became heated after police reportedly told the driver he was not allowed to enter frank ogawa plaza because he zid not have the proper permit. that driver was trying to deliver portable toilets but was told to leave. protesters got into an argue with police. one person was arrested. well, it is no secret, black friday in full force right now. people out there losing their minds, seeing the deals. they want to know what kind of weather they'll be facing. >> we're seeing out there the storms. if you're going to head outside you'll need probably a nice coat. no so much the umbrella this morning, unlike 24 hours ago. we have 30s out around gilroy. 38 degrees. you see the wind somewhat on shore this morning at 14 miles per hour. so we've seen a little bit of light rain and sprinkles in the north bay. you can see that in napa county.

look at this hay long the coast approaching san bruno mountain. you can see misty skies across the santa cruz mountains as well. this is the story for the first half of the morning. the main concern into the weekend with high pressure building in is fog. it could get thick in spots especially by the weekend. the high pressure acts like a lid and traps in the morning fog. this is something we'll be watching throughout your seven-day forecast. today temperatures not too bad. low 60s in san jose. 61 at livermore. close to 60 in san francisco. and a few areas of misty skies for the morning. and as we head to the afternoon, partly cloudy conditions and for this time of year, actually very dry looking seven-day forecast with morning fog and inland temperatures in san jose by the weekend, looking pretty good. maybe upper 60s. we'll take that, rob. speaking of dry, i hope you had a great turkey. we're looking to the eastbound. 880 southbound. a disabled vehicle right at 66. let's get to a live shot at oakland. we'll show you 66 avenue to the

45 in san jose. 43 in santa cruz. in the north bay a weak system is dropping in. just a slight chance of seeing drizzle. a little bit of light rain on the coast. and this afternoon partly cloudy, cool sunshine. as high pressure builds in our temperature is going to climb on up. right now not much on the radar. you'll notice here along the coast we have a little bit of drizzle out there. this is a main concern. some of the fog, you can see it on the east bay. this is what we see. that moisture tends to get trapped and sometimes as the wind flows slightly offshore, you'll see the fog machine set up on the central valley.

investors are focused on europe. they sell yesterday after comments from french and german leaders about the central bank's role in containing the debt crisis. they cut portugal's credit rating and moody's downgraded hungary as well. u.s. stocks dropped an wednesday. this is raising concerns that trouble in weaker countries like greece and portugal may spread to the more stable nations. there's no economic data expected in the states. we saw it fall to 11,257. the nasdaq losing 56 points. we already have an early read on how the holiday shopping season is shaping up. u as of yesterday afternoon, online thanksgiving sales were up 20% from last year. the national retail federation

merchandise because of black friday. >> that's right. one man is listed in critical but stable condition. and another man is under arrest. the parking lot has been roped off, but wal-mart reopend this morning. a short time ago police told us what they believed happen. a family just leaving wal-mart with their purchases. when a male member of the family resisted, the robbers shot them. and when police arrived they found the victim lying in the parking lot of this wal-mart in san leandro and he was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. police arrested a man, but they're not sure if he was the shooter. they're looking for one more person in connection with the

shooting. there's no word to police if robbers got away with what they're trying to steal. there are security guards here. so it's surprising this attack would happen. there are also surveillance cameras, which police are now reviewing. that might help them identify the robbers. jon and marla, back to you. investigation is under way after a police officer shot and killed an armed man. police say they got a call from a woman who lives on fellers lane. she tole them her ex-boyfriend was pounding on her back door. the first officer on the scene shot and killed an armed man he found there. investigators have not yet released what led up to the

shooting. u. a public memorial will be held this weekend for the 19-year-old marine killed in afghanistan. they will hold a tribute to joshua at 7:30 tomorrow night at his school's football stadium. we have video here of a candle light vigil held for him on tuesday night. he was part of the class of 2010 at san ramon high school. he died last friday during combat operations. his body will be arriving monday morning at travis air force base. so far, we have no details on funeral plans. believe it or not, already, hundreds of thousands of people out shopping on this black friday. that's right and our shopping warrior hit the streets to find out how crazy it really is. he's at a best buy trying to hold off the masses. bob, what is happening.

>> reporter: good morning, marla and jon. if you take a look around, it's somewhat empty. if you were to look at this scene 365 days ago, last black friday, this place would be jam packed. the reason it's not now is because best buy and a few other retailers opened at midnight. they did have quite a crush out there. some people camped out since wednesday morning. and by some estimates, the line outfront this year at midnight was much longer than 5:00 in the morning last black friday. so maybe that worked out. good morning to you. happy post thanksgiving. what's your vibe? how did it go? >> we had a successful day, morning, and it still is morning. i'm confused right now. it's been really great. customers are being helped out. we got through the lines quickly. but we did have long lines. >> the door busters are done.

looking gloomy. 45 degrees right now. east wind at 5 miles per hour. in oakland we're at 49. southeast wind at 6. in san francisco, a little bit of drizzle at times. we've been watching a weak system going on by. eventually later this afternoon we'll see what's left of the patchy fog inland clearing, and a nice forecast as we get into the start of the end of the holiday weekend. you can see the north bay did have showers around napa county. those have moved on. and a little bit of light rain in oakland. it should be gone. eventually the next 20 minutes. reaching sunnyvale to san jose. high pressure is building in. they'll give us a dry weekend where patchy fog will really be our only main concern in the seven-day forecast after today. 62 in san jose. should see temperatures close to 60 in san francisco. low 60s across the north bay. and your seven-day forecast will have morning fog.

will come to the malls, they're also hoping they will get them online. cyber shopping is a big trend we've seen the last several years. this year the new battle ground is mobile sites. a lot of stores offering special deals only available on their mobile sites, and they are sent to your smart phone. some are getting so aggressive they'll sending deals to people when they think they'll be in line checking out at a competitor's store. they hope those people will get the deals own their smart phones, leave the checkout line and come to their store instead. sew it is aggressive. there is backlash to this. with people saying that black friday shopping. starting online petition. 200,000 signatures. not open on thanksgiving day. saying it should be kept off for employees to be able to enjoy the holiday with their families. target responded by keeping closed stores until this

businesses -- >> american express says small businesses need help. new research showing small stores account for 11% less of total retail sales. two new allegation -- in ans week, sandusky's lawyer confirmed one is a family member. the lawyer calls the allegations ridiculous and unfounded. both of the new alleged victims are under the age of 18, and yesterday a friend of former head coach joe paterno told the associated press paterno's wife was turned away when trying to use a campus pool. the university responded to the story last night, saying she was turned away, but only because the pool was closed for the thanksgiving holiday. new details about the death of the leader of the san jose chapter of the hell's angels.

the witness say it was not an assassination plot or declaration of war. simply a loud mouthed loose cannon who provoked a fight that ended in the shooting. jeffrey pettigrew was shot and killed in nevada on september 23rd. the witness says just an hour earlier it looked like there was a -- the witness who claims to be a high ranking member says he was kicked out of the game. plenty of fast cash ideas floating around the state capitol this morning. a private investor group pushing the state to sell off the 11 office properties to $1.2 billion in immediate cash. the deal would include prime real estate including the earl warren building. that's in san francisco, which houses the state supreme court. the the sacramento bee reporting

it would come from public bonds instead of private equity firms. under the new deal the state would take back the properties after 30 years. the governor has already rejected the plan twice. skiers and snowboarders have something extra to be grateful for on thanksgiving day. it was opening at sugar bowl ski resort. one skier called it perfect. i guess it's perfect if you like your snow soft, wet and very heavy. only one run was available. more than 250 people strapped on the skis. but they didn't last long. most were off the mountain by noon to go enjoy their thanksgiving dinner. 5:47 now. meteorologist rob maeda is here to give us a look at the post thanksgiving weekend forecast. >> should be easy for travel the next few days. this morning we still have areas the dealing with light rain in spots.

45 in san jose gilroy dropped down to 38. 46 at livermore and santa rosa is close to 48 degrees. now winds southwest hat 14 through fairfield. we have an onshore breeze. the winds slip back in the opposite direction. we have to watch out for the central valley fog to keep the east bay temperatures running on the cool side. today we'll be tracking those sprinkles, which dropped out across the central bay. by the afternoon partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the 60s sochlt one more weak system that did drop some light rain around the hill top there. you can see a few showers south and west of the city. you can see the radar is really tough to pick it up. a very weak system that will be here and gone by the afternoon. the storm track is steering off to the north. so what we'll see here is not tracking rain, but rather how much inland fog we'll see.

as we head to the start of your weekend, you can see this in the delta and east bay valleys. it tends to trap the low level moisture and gives us these foggy mornings. the limiting factors on temperatures this weekend. we'll see dry conditions. but depending how much fog lingers toward the valley we may see temperatures down a bit. in santa clara we'll get numbers in the mid to upper 60s. 62 in san jose with a few sprinkles for the morning. if you're headed to the high country, nice after patchy fog and icy conditions for the morning. mid-60s looking pretty good into the holiday season. live with a shopper over southland mall. there we are in hayward look at all these folks on the freeway.

look at that parking lot. thigh got to the major stores. they're doing business over there. i did see them pass over union landing. it's crowded over there through union city as well. the side of the tunnel. there's a fire on scene now. no lanes on the eastbound 24 are blocked. but it's a distraction over to the other side. they say no lanes are blocked. right here. i saw flashing lights with tow truck crew as they moved things off the shoulder over the last five minutes. very clear commute.

research center in spain arrived at lax yesterday. they spent their entire lives in a lab. most have never seen the sun. los angeles was their first stop in their new life of freedom. as you can see, some were a little bit timid. others happy to run free. >> these dogs have lived their entire lives being poked, prodded, opened up, cut open, and now they get to be free. >> the beagles are headed to foster homes in los angeles. this is part of the beagle free process. once they're medically clear, the pups can be adopted. they could all have homes by christmas. let's hope so. san jose's christmas in the park kicks off with the annual tree lights. you can catch of glimpse of mike inouye.
