opened door of negotiating this deal and try to get something done in the next two weeks. we can be optimistic about the deal. at the end of the day, if that deal isn't the right deal, i believe the players won't sign that deal. billy hunter won't accept that deal. and we'll have to move forward with negotiations with a labor lawyer. >> that said, how will you vote on this deal? i got to see the deal. from hearing from my agent and other players and the union, not much on the deal has changed. but the deal has given us a time line. it's critical right now for our season. we have a maxed out season right now that could possibly happen. it would be good for the players and the owners and the fans. if this is not the right thing for us to do, or sign, and players as a whole feel that way, we will not take that deal. >> you've come this far. you missed 16 games, a month

worth of paychecks. will you take this deal if it does not meet your standard? >> we prepared for this. a lot of the older guys in the league, five, six-plus years in the league, have an understanding of what's going on. i feel bad for the younger players who got drafted who left college or overseas. this is all new to them. this is a fight as a whole for us. and if we have to go the whole season without playing basketball, so be it. i know the guys that have been in the league longer than me, are willing to do that. at the end of the day, we're fighting, not just foryourselves but for the future of the nba. and the guys in college, can make a living playing this game of basketball. >> are there times you and the other nba players think commissioner stern and the owners take the players for granted? >> i don't think they take us for granted. i think us players, if anything, we might take them for granted and the fans also. they have a tough job.

couple late buckets at the end. but the outcome was not in jeopardy. it was never going to be a player win. exactly. here's the one thing that stern loses. he used to be the guy who drove the argument because he also had his hands on the pulse of the moderate owners who would come in at the end and make sure the deals got done. now, it's clear that the hard-line owners, who can give or take stern at this point, that came in and held firm throughout. stern is no longer the powerful guy in the nba he used to be. and i think within the next couple years, you're going to start hearing more names about commissioner -- >> really? that's where it goes next. great job. stay with us. up next, a special edition of nbc bay area news. for all of us at "xfinity sports sunday," good night.

right now on nbc bay area news, a long-time college basketball coach was fired today, after ability gaetjens of sexual assault by three boys. now, there's new audio evidence, as well. san francisco police released new evidence as they track down

a driver responsible for a thanksgiving day hit and run, that left a bay area firefighter with severe brain injuries. and there's a new front-runner in the race for the gop nomination. we'll show you who received a major endorsement today. there's a hint. the news starts right now. good evening. thanks for joining us. for this special edition of nbc bay area news after sunday night football. tonight, a bay area firefighter who is also an iraq war veteran is in critical condition at a san francisco hospital, the victim of a hit and run. it happened early thanksgiving morning. and tonight, police released new evidence in the case. we have the latest on the condition of the 27-year-old man and the investigation. >> reporter: good evening. late today, police released surveillance footage of a suspect in hopes that it would

lead to an arrest. meanwhile, the victim, 29-year-old albert bartal is listed in critical season. he is with cal fire santa cruz unit. early thanksgiving morning, bartal was involved in a fight with a man at a fast food restaurant. in this surveillance video, you see the suspect wearing a white t-shirt standing at the counter on the left side of your screen. bartal walked two blocks down to a shell gas station, where police say the suspect hit bartal with his suv. bartal, the father of a 3-year-old girl, suffered a traumatic brain injury. >> during the holidays, it makes it a little harder. we're all just a phone call away from something like this. >> you know it's going to be a long road. he's undergone some major

surgeries. with a dramatic injury like that, all bets are off. we hope that he makes the recovery. >> now, police have released photos of the suspect, describing him as a mixed race or latino man, between the ages of 18 and 24. they also released a photo of his suv, possibly a black mazda cx, with sport rims. if you recognize the suspect and help locate him, you're asked to call the san francisco police department. we want to update you on that apartment fire in cupertino last night. the fire forced as many as 60 people out of their homes. and eight people spent the night at a temporary shelter set up by the red cross. the fire broke out at the village green apartments on homestead road. it staged 16 apartments, 6 of which were completely destroyed. the red cross set up a shelter

inside the high school gym and is helping people who are not able to go back to their apartment. >> there's a variety of solutions we're working on right now. we're working with the apartment management people. we're going to get people moved into adjacent apartments. some people are staying with family. and we're keeping the shelter open for those who have no other alternative have. >> the fire department said the fire started when a woman was cooking french fries and forgot about them. officials said it was completely accidental. no one was injured. but the fire caused about $2 million in damage. syracuse university announced today it has fired a long-time assistant basketball coach after three men accused him of sexually abusing them when they were boys. bernie fine had been with the university for 35 years. tonight, the school released a statement saying, at the direction of the chancellor,

bernie fine's employment with syracuse university has been terminated effective immediately. fine has called the accusations against him patently false. investigators searched his home friday, after the third person accused him. also today, espn released an audiotape that was reportedly of fine's wife and one of the boys back in 2002. the boy asked fine's wife if she is the only victim. and she reportedly says, quote, there might be others. tomorrow will likely be a day of heavy protests of four u.c. campuses across the state. occupy protesters, many of them students, are supposed to protest during tomorrow's u.c. regents meeting. demonstrators say they want to show their support for occupy movements across the country. but they're also specifically protesting recent clashes with campus police at davis and cal.

they're also upset about tuition hikes. protesters at davis say they're planning a general strike tomorrow to try to shut down the entire campus. the regents' meeting was supposed to happen earlier this month. still ahead on nbc bay area news, mitt romney takes a hit in the race for the republican nomination. we'll show you who has emerged as the front-runner for in week. and a royal rescue on the irish sea, with prince william leading the way. we're seeing things cooling quickly around the bay area. 40s and 50s right now. watching patchy, dense fog heading into norm morning. fog isn't the only thing we're seeing. gusty winds coming back. it's about building cars in america. it's all about jobs. it's all about respect. security. the american dream.

republican presidential candidate newt gingrich picked up a key endorsement today, ahead of the new hampshire primary. the union leader, the largest newspaper in new hampshire, has endorsed gingrich. and many say that nod has the potential to change the race. brian moore has the that story. >> reporter: newt gingrich has just gotten a big boost in new hampshire. "the union leader" newspaper endorsed the gop front-runner and snubbed mitt romney saying, we would rather back someone with whom we may disagree, than one who tells us who he thinks we want to hear. >> imagine that as president. >> reporter: the other candidates are shrugging off the endorsement. >> the main endorsement i'm looking forward to is the one here in iowa on january 3rd in the caucuses. >> reporter: the caucuses are just under a month away.

it's been a volatile race. and each is hoping for a surge like the one newt gingrich is seeing now. >> not long ago, it was a two-man race. it was perry. and it was romney. >> reporter: herman cain had his moment. and he's trying to get it back. >> obviously, false accusations and confusion about some of my positions has contributed to it. >> reporter: but the gop presidential candidate says, hope isn't running short, time is. brian moore, nbc news, washington. in pakistan, all kinds of questions about yesterday's deadly nato air strike. and the situation is threatening an already tense partnership between pakistan and the united states. today was a day of mourning as pakistan honored the 24 soldiers killed in the u.s.-led nato air strike. the soldiers were reportedly in two border posts where militants are active. afghan officials said today that troops and nato forces called in the air strikes after they came under fire. but the attacks sparked protests

across pakistan today. while most of the anger was aimed at the u.s. some blamed their own civilian government, as well. >> translator: our existing political leadership has become the guardian of american interests. our leaders have mortgaged the pakistani people and put pakistan for sale across the globe. >> pakistan has also ordered the u.s. to vacate an air base used for cia drone missions. right now, we want to check in with rain mayeda on the weather. >> we're seeing a mix today. look at morgan hill. down towards gilroy. 70s today. completely different story. almost 15 minutes away on the drive up to san jose. 61 for a high. 59, san francisco. and across the east bay valley, 60 today around livermore. mid to upper 50s around the north bay, as the fog lingered. it was two layers of clouds.

high clouds above. it limited the ability of the sun to break up the low cloud deck this morning. the two layers reflecting the sunlight away today. keeping things cool for most of the bay area. 40s and 50s outside right now. a dense fog advisory for tomorrow morning. for the inner bay, north bay, east bay, over to sacramento, visibility has dropped to a quarter-mile in fair field and concord. an offshore breeze pumping in the central valley fog. the morning will start out with more fog. we'll see a hazy afternoon sunshine. temperatures warming up a little bit inland, by a couple of degrees. but the big headline in the seven-day forecast is the wind that is really going to crank up for the east bay hills for the middle part of the week. satellite radar shows you we have rain on the north coast. but the system that's bringing all the clouds to the bay area is going to continue to weaken as it flies to us overnight.

areas north of lake county, maybe a few sprinkles. the main effect of the system is a lot of clouds. we'll get clearing skies and warming temperatures. in the morning, we'll see 40s and 50s. the fog thick in a few spots. and like we had today, that fog will linger around the east bay valley. as we head around 4:00, with the fog breaking up a little earlier tomorrow, 59 degrees in fair field. 63 in livermore. south of san jose, that's the warm locaon, as you find the numbers close to 70 in santa cruz and gilroy. the seven-day forecast, looking pretty dry. not only dry. gusty winds. we could see 40 to 50-mile-per-hour gusts, in the east bay hills. bring in the lawn furniture now. could be gusty for the middle part of the week. and dry as we head through next weekend. >> we're giving you a couple of days' warning. thank you. prince william joined a rescue mission today after a

cargo ship broke apart in the irish sea. britain's ministry of defense confirmed prince william was the co-pilot of a helicopter that rescued two people from a life raft. they received a call from the cargo ship saying it was experiencing extreme weather. and a rescue helicopter from prince william's base was sent to the scene to help. >> there's no way he could be posted, like his brother, prince harry, to the front line in afghanistan, because of his role as the future king. he is a serviceman. he's not going to shirk his responsibility. >> sources say this rescue was williams' most harrowing mission to date. the two survivors rescued by the man second in line to the throne will have quite a story to tell. can you imagine? you're stressed and cold. and there's the prince helping you out. >> coming to save your life. >> i guess at that point, you don't care who it is. thanks for watching this special edition of nbc bay area news. we have "30 rock" coming up
