no rain this week. good news, right. >> that's the same thing i'm talking about. specifically calling out the ve venecia bridge as well as interstate 80. all the way up to solano county, as your maps showed, very thick fog. tough to see at times. below 100 feet. lower the speeds. >> caltran already has it posted, heavy fog. a flight had to land after smoke filled the cockpit. american airlines flight 177 landed safely into buffalo. they were headed from jfk when the pilot noticed smoke in the cockpit. all passengers were escorted off

the plane. so far no injuries have been reported. crews are working through the night to pinpoint the problem. so far no word on the cause. it will arrive at 12:20. protesters will be out in force at several uc campuses. they'll demonstrate as the uc regents gather for a scheduled meeting. damien trujillo is live with more on what we can all expect. good morning, damien. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this meeting here at ucsf gets under way at 9:00 this morning. it will be heated. you can see some police are still arriving. police have been all around this campus making sure things don't get out of hands. they had to cancel their last meeting for fears of violence by student protesters. this morning they'll hold their meeting on a television screen at ucla, at ucsf and at uc

davis. davis is where students say they'll shut down the campus just days after that now famous pepper spraying incident by campus police. the students this time will have one hour of open forum to voice their concerns or anger at the regents. the allotted time during normal meetings is 20 minutes. the system cannot continue to function without one big change. what people need to realize is you have to find revenues. from where, from whom? how much? >> and again security will be fight at today's meeting. some might say it's presidential with the security sweep and one hour and a half academic-in prior for all the media. just to give you an idea,

tuition will not be on today's agenda. but i did a quick survey. a quick google search to see if we have a first grader what it would cost you for them to attend uc berkeley for four years when they are ready to do so. according to the hartford group, the 529 plan, that will cost you $225,000 once they turn of age. this morning the suspected bank robber accused of killing a police officer in vallejo is expected to be in court today. smith is charged in the death of veteran officer james capoot who was shot almost two weeks ago while chasing smith after a bank robbery. smith is being held in the salono county jail without bail.

it is 5:04 now. an unsolved murder left a grieving mother searching for some kind of answers. christina evans came up asking investigators to help figure out who killed her son. brandon was at a party near the horseshoes pit when he left to get a cell phone from his car. that is when police say he was shot. he was on his way to this the hospital when he died. police say the case is still open and they are looking for brandon's killer. >> all i could do is beg the community. come forward with this information. please give us closure. my son didn't deserve what he got. and that's why i come out here. because i can't go on in life without knowing that the person that took my son's life is

paying for it. >> heart wrenching. the 20-year-old is only in the city three weeks when he was killed. a $100,000 reward is available for information leading to his killer. rodrigo ruiz did not return from a paddle boat trip. the u.s. coast guard has been searching for him since then. now ruiz is in his 30s, about 5'5" and weighs 130 pounds. he has short brown hair with brown eyes and was last seen wearing a gray wet suit. we do have a crew on the scene right now. and we'll bring you any breaking developments throughout the morning. anyone with information is asked to contact the coast guard or police. it was a tragic end for a man trying to run across a

freeway, possiblily y lto avoid traffic stop near berkeley. several cars hit him as he attempted to run across saturday night. before the incident officers spotted him in his car weaving around traffic when they tried to pull him over. the man drove off and got out of his car and ran across the freeway. this man has not been identified and they say it's not clear if he was drunk or high on drugs. a dangerous intersection on the peninsula could have drivers slowing down. this is continuing coverage of a story we've been following for months. the east city council will decide what decisions should be done at gloria way. some say more crosswalk signs and pavement markings. last year an engineering firm hired by the city says a stop sign is not needed. there have been several accidents at the intersection,

including a fatal one that killed a 6-year-old girl. parishioners on patrol. this morning members of an antioch church are standing guard to keep thieves from targeting their place of worship. thieves hit the church four time this is year, usually stealing copper wire, which leaves the church without power hours before worship services. the church says several members of the congregation started taking turns keeping an eye out for thieves overnight and during the early morning hours. oakland is putting a freeze on new pawnshops to curb crime. many secondhand dealers are prime destinations for criminals who want to get cash for stolen gold. city leaders say the most affected area is the fruitvale district. the ban on new pawnshops lasts until december 30th to give lawmakers enough time to tighten rules and regulations.

a woman was already on radar before she was arrested for shoplifting. a nooe man marcus salesclerk suspect an assemblywoman of shoplifting a dress just one week before she was arrested. a week earlier she noticed she was back in the store. social security started to track her with surveillance cameras. she was arrested outside the store for shoplifting more than $2,400 worth of merchandise, including a pair of leather pants. it's all about the fog lights this morning. extremely low visibility out there. christina loren knows all about this. >> it means to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination safely. not a great morning to blast that stereo. as you can see the dense fog advisory is not just for the buy

area. the entire valley with thick fog this morning. so you want to take it easy. let me show you the numbers we're reporting for visibility. areas within san jose less than a water mile of visibility. four miles in san francisco. a quarter mile in napa and fairfield checking in with half a mile. so take it easy out there. travel cautiously. 49 degrees at 7:00 a.m. as you make your way out the front door with a fair amount of fog. by noon a mix of sun and clouds over the bay area. by 5:00 p.m. as you make your way home from work, 59 degrees. not too shabby inland. i'll have that seven day forecast coming up in the next report. we'll talk about how much snow the sierra nevada picked up over the weekend. first let's get you out the front door with mike inouye. >> we'll show you the east shore

clouds overhead. what a gorgeous, gorgeous sunday we had on the bay area. as we head throughout the day, i'm thinking we'll lose a little bit of cloud cover in the south bay. east bay will probably see the clouds all day long. i'm talking about the tri valley where the fog st really thick this morning. at least until 9:00 a.m. possiblily until 11:00 a.m. we'll be watching that for you. and your visibility dropping off across the board. but five miles in san jose. a quarter mile in livermore. less than a quarter nile in oakland. really need to take it easy out there. that's a slow commute as it normally goes on a slow business day. so give yourself ample time to reach your destination safely a mile and a quarter in santa rosa. and fairfield, really thick fog throughout the central valley this morning.

headquarters. after the u.s. markets saw their worst week in two months, we're watching the futures on the rise. this, of course, on the latest proposals out of europe to contain the debt crisis. germany and france are explores radical ways to impose tighter budget control. in addition, some reports are saying the imf is prepping a rescue plan for italy, and is of course spurring a worldwide rally. last week in the u.s. the s&p 500 fell 4.7%. the dow was off 4.8%. and the nasdaq lost 5.1%. all the markets were getting back a lot of october's gains. retail sales this black friday rose 6.6% from a year ago. this according to shopper track, which measures it. in 2010 there was a mere 0.3%

gain on black friday. overall sales over the thanksgiving weekend grew 16.4% according on the national retail federation. this year's shopping extravaganza is setting a new record. sales are estimated to reach over $52 billion for the four day weekend. and consumers are bracing themselves for cyber monday. just this past friday cyber sales jumped 26% according to comescore. in 2010 cyber monday sales were over a billion dollars making it the biggest online spending day in history. we have a lot to live up to today. >> jon is online right now buying his christmas presents. with all of us going bananas on cyber monday, not much business happening at oakland city hall. city offices will be closed because of budget cut backs. most workers are required to take unpaid leave to close a $58

million short fall. also the oakland public library. parks will be open, but the gaits and restrooms will be closed. and no street sweeping. police, fire and emergency services will not be affected. california schools are getting ready for a new grade level. transitional kindergarten. it will move the birthday cut-off date from december to september. it will require them to offer a new grade level for children with fall birthdays who are just too young to start kindergarten sochlt this coming fall districts must offer the new program for kids who turned 5 between november 2nd and december 2nd. the cut-off birthday date will move to september. say it suspect so. the annual two day sledding event on the streets of san

morning's agenda. but that won't keep sfunts for making a raucous. the time allotted is usually 20 minutes at these meetings. this is far from a regular meeting. so the time students will have is one hour. this is a rescheduled meeting. they had to post tone the last one for security reasons. fears of violence by angry students. since then the student anger has only been fueled by the piper spraying incident. today the regents will hear it all. nbc bay area political analyst says taxes might be the only answer to save higher education. >> more than a general strike. people need to realize you have to find revenues.

thanksgiving day. he is listed in critical condition after suffering traumatic brain injuries. on early hgz morning he got into a fight with a suspect shown wearing a white t-shirt here at the restaurant on 11th avenue and gary boulevard. after being separated he walked to a nearby gas station. police say the suspect got into his car and rammed him before fleeing. the firefighters are keeping a vigil at the hospital. >> this is tough, as you can imagine. it would be tough for anybody. i really can't explain what the family is going through. >> police describe the suspect as a mixed race or latino man between 18 to 24 years old. he was seen driving a black suv, possiblily a mazda cx with front end damage.

this morning we're getting word that several san francisco police officers will go before a grand jury to answer allegations of theft and misconduct. a federal grand jury is looking into criminal misconduct charges levelled at officers. he's accusing them of stealing thousands of dollars in cash from suspects arrested in drug buys and other cases. the u.s. attorney's office is not yet commenting on the case. the president of the police officer's association says he is confident that cops did not do anything wrong. well, this morning new plans are in the works for protesters to reoccupy frank ogawa plaza in downtown oakland. protesters say they plan to retake the plaza tomorrow with a 24-hour a day, seven-day a week vigil. activists say it's not part of their bargain with mayor jean quan. protesters were forced out when

police raided the tent city and tore down the encampment. wall street protesters are holding firm despite a deadline to leave their encampment. police have not taken any action against hundreds of protesters. yerler police said arrests were likely. a commander says police want to clear out the park as quickly as possible. officers say the crowd is cooperative so far. yes, it's been a fog by morning, but the silver lining on the clouds is there is no rain in them. ri right, christina? >> yeah, throw that umbrella in the corner. more so tomorrow than today. in some cities it will take the first part of the day to clear.

probably until 11:00 a.m. we'll keep it posted until 9:00 a.m. this morning. take a look at your visibilities reduced to less than a quarter of a mile. it is really thick out there this morning. you can only see hundreds of feet in certain locations. give yourself plenty of time. we are going to get a little bit of a break. thaes mostly the case for the south bay and the peninsula. that will make for a warmer afternoon today than in the locations. not going to be quite as warm in the city that holds out the fog all day long. as you head out to work, temperatures will climb. noon 48 degrees. by 5:00 p.m. 59 degrees inland. i have the seven-day forecast coming up. no rain but a lot of wind on the way. we'll talk about that in moments. first let's see how the fog is

welcome back. 5:42. some surprising news on the gop campaign trail. presidential candidate newt gingrich is on a roll this morning after getting a key newspaper endorsement. brian mooar is in washington, d.c. this morning with the latest twist on the race for president. >> well, gingrich, the former house speaker picked up an incredible endorsement from the newspaper in new hampshire. he says gingrich is not a perfect candidate, but he's a heck of a lot better than mitt romney who they call the play it safe candidate. gingrich is the front-runner now. but it's been a merry go round. everybody has had a turn. john huntsman says he's getting whiplashed from watching the other candidates go up and down. he's hoping he'll be able to

ride a wave. what we're seeing now is really a continuation of the story line that has been playing out all along. mitt romney is very strong. still unable to fire up that conservative base to get the conservatives excited. but he's in a heck of a lot better position than rick perry. and he doesn't have the endorsement that will get people to vote for you in iowa and new hampshir hampshire. >> doesn't have that widespread appeal. this morning long lines at voting stations throughout egypt as a landmark election is under way. today is the first parliamentary election since former president hosni mubarak was ousted from office.

the election has been overshadowed by deadly crashed between protesters and police. for decades few egyptianses cast ballots because every election was rigged in honor of his ruling party. the three american students arrested during protests are back home in the u.s. now one of the students is speaking out about his ek pee s experience on the "today show." >> they put our shirts over our heads so we kon see where we were. they hit nus the face and the back of the neck a lot. we spent about seven hours in the fetal position with our hands behind our back handcuffed in the dark. they were behind us with guns saying if we moved at all they would shoot us. they were detained last weekend,

and the poor. new data by the census bureau says berkeley topped the list. the annual median income for excites was $77,000 compared to 26,000 for african-americans. that also shows berkeley has one of the highest areas of poverty. >> the gap between the haves and have notes have growing elsewhere. scott mcgrew, 14 million people out of work. sales and profits aren't the same thing. especially if you're selling waffle items for $3. scenes like this paint a picture of two very different americas. two very different christmas. another good one at mom or dad and employees. another tough one if not.
