garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everyone. i'm jon kelley. let's get your day started with christina loren. telling us about the forecast. a lot of the fog on the window. at least it's not rain. >> i'll take the rain over the fog any day. it's really, really thick out there. and we have good air quality because of the rain. this is one of the days where it doesn't matter where you're waking up. san jose, oakland, santa rosa or san francisco, you'll have to drive through thick patches, losing visibility at times all the way down to 100 feet. then we have big time changes on the way in your forecast. first, let's get you through the fog with our own mike inouye. >> folks are making their way through the fog. no major accidents reported now. we have a disabled vehicle reported at the bay bridge toll plaza on the left bottom of your screen. let's get a look out there to see the volume of traffic starting to pick up. definitely we have low

visibility across this band as well as most of your other bay area bridges. lower the speeds. it's tough out there this morning. >> it looks ominous out there. >> yeah, it does. emotions are expected to run high at uc campus. occupy protesters will be out in force demonstrating as the board of regents gathers for a meetin meeting. >> good morning. it should be a big meeting. we got here at 4:30 this morning and police officers were already getting ready. they have barricades set up. a couple of dozen police officers are inside the mission bay conference center getting ready for what they expect this morning at this 9:00 meeting. that meeting begins in three hours. this is a rescheduled meeting. you might recall they had to cancel the last meeting because of fears of violence by angry students. at 9:00 a.m. the regents will

hold their meeting via television screen at four campus including ucsf, ucla and uc davis. they are sure to get an earful about the pepper spraying incident. the regents are allocating one hour for public comment this time. tuition hikes, however, are not on the agenda. but askording to nbc bay area political analyst, the cost of higher education will spiral out of control unless californians swallow a bitter p ill. >> more than a general strike. more than protesting going to classes, people need to realize if you want to type them down, you have to find a way to get revenues. that means taxes. from where? from whom? and how much? >> reporter: the regents will meet in closed session at 8:30

this morning for half an hour. the meeting begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. if you have a first grader and plan on them attending uc berkeley, the cost will be $230,000 for four years of schoo school. >> thank you very much. very painful. >> an american airlines flight headed to san francisco was forced to make an emergency landing. the plane was leaving new york city late last night when the pilot noticed smoke inside the cockpit. he made an emergency landing in buffalo. all 173 people on the flight got off safely. the new plane is expected to take off in about an hour and arrive at 12:20 this afternoon. mechanics are still trying to figure out what caused the smoke. >> this morning rescue crews will be back out on the water zenching for paddle boater near half-moon bay.

hodrigo ruiz was supposed to return about 12:30 yesterday afternoon but never made it back. ruiz is in his 30s, 5'5" and weighs 130 pounds. he has short brown hair with brown eyes and last seen wearing a gray wet suit. we do have a crew on the scene. >> a tragic ent for a man trying to run across a freeway to avoid a traffic stop in berkeley. several cars hit and killed him as he attempted to run across the eastbound side of interstate 80 on saturday night. officers spotted him in his car weaving in and out of traffic.

the highway patrol says it's unknown if he was high or on drugs or drunk. several police officers will soon be called to testify about allegations of theft and misconduct according to san francisco chronicle. the public defender accused the officers of stealing thousands of dollars in cash and valuables from suspects. the u.s. attorney's office is not commenting on the case hat this point. the president of the police officer's association says he is confident that cops did not do anything wrong. black friday was a big hit for retailers. and they're hoping the buying spirit will continue with cyber monda monday. >> good morning to you. the dough pushed higher because of midnight sales. it's reasonable to expect the trend will continue online. all kind of retailers offering deal. amazon, best buy, apple offering free shipping.

dense fog, less than a quarter mile visibility in oakland. then a quarter of a mile. every city that is reporting really thick fog this morning. even when you walk out your front door, it makes your surroundings almost unfamiliar. leave yourself plenty of time between you and the car in front of you. we stop the future cast right at 9:00 a.m. also the peninsula will see some sunshine. that will make for the warmest conditions in the south bay. by 6:00 p.m. a nice clear sky will prevail over the bay area. we'll have to wait for the clear sky 64 in san jose. 64 in los gatos versus 58 in concord where we'll be foggy throughout the day. go got the seven-day outlook ready to go. got winds of change coming in. taking you through the next six days, a little bit of a change. but you'll like the forecast.

first let's get you out the front door with mike. >> highway 4, speeds are very slow past "l" street. likely to lower the speeds down to the 50s because of the fog. the low visibility right here, for example, they still have fog advisories from chp. very tough in the north bay as well. a live look from the oakland side. this is the upper deck approaching treasure island. a little clearer here. >> thank you very much, my man. this one sounds like it's out of a fairy tale, rescued by a prince, and we're not talking about harry. prince william helping to save the crew of a cargo ship that broke apart and sank in the irish sea. he was the copilot on the

mission that rescued two people from a life raft. they received a distress call saying they were experiencing extreme weather. the coast guard still looking for five missing people. george lucas is ready to create a new fi m making fortress in the north bay. he wants to turn it to a three-story studio complete with film stages and screening rooms along with a cafe, a general store and a day care center. the plans even call for a caved age kask of whine from the vineyards. the building is expected to be as big as two football fields to house 340 employees. >> napa valley can add another star wine maker to the list. we'll show you who is debuting new wine. >> plus the bay area city trying

stepping forward in the jerry sandusky sexual abuse investigation. penn state received a letter from a man who may have been assaulted by sandusky. the letter was sent to the state attorney general's office by an inmate in oklahoma. they are not saying what the letter alleges so far. he's accused of assaulting eight boys over the weekend. and assistant men's basketball coach bernie fine was fired after a third accuser came forward with a child molestation allegations. fine was first accused by two ball boys, one who was abused at his home at syracuse. fine has denied the allegations. good news from the nba as basketball fans will get their season back. the owners and players have come

up with a tentative labor agreement. the nba would hold a 66-game regular season. that will start on december 25th. the playoffs would run through june 26th. the deal unofficially ending a 149-day lockout. former nba superstar yrk yao ming is now a wine maker. the wine is made by his company yao family wines. it's expected to be on the market for $600 a bottle. come on. bring that price down. he ended his basketball career in july. >> he's a hero. he can set pel rocks and get

rich. she can't afford the wine. she already pointed that out. just kidding. >> yeah, hey, maybe for christmas this year. we're looking good this morning where you can see the visibility is coming up in some spots. there are dense patches of fog kind of swirling around the bay area. especially the areas that add the moisture. we picked up the rain on friday. high pressure moves in, compresses the moisture and then you lose visibility. we are seeing the numbers come up and down. still working with less than a quarter mile in oakland. and basically wherever you're headed it will slow you down. so you want to give yourself time and stay alert. that is your best bet through the fog.

dense fog advisory until 9:00 a.m. i have a funny feeling they'll have to extend for places like the tri valley. the fog will settle in until # 1:00 a.m. ch 56 degrees at 5:00 p.m. in san francisco. we'll see the sunshine. we just have to wait for it. high pressure in control to set up over the bay area. then on wednesday it sets up on top of us. we are concerned about windy conditions. howling winds in the east bay hills and nor bay hills wednesday morning through thursday night. let's take you through the seven-day forecast. turning o the breezy side wednesday through thursday. chilly start on friday. but the good news is we are done with the rain chances at least for this week. now the sun will burn off top layer and we start to see a little bit better visibility. we'll keep watching that for you. how is that impacting the drive? >> the fog is always an issue

with the speeds. allow more space between you and the car in front of you. you have to increase the reaction time because it's tough to see. here we're increasing the travel time. the earlier disabled vehicle has cleared from the roadway. we still see a patch of slowing here. over to 680, 21-minute drive for the commute. over here, san jose looks really good though. but i want to call out the slowing at northbound 101 around 880 up to the airport. low visibility called out earlier and 280 around edge wood. we get a live look outside at the the bay bridge. there's the toll plaza camera barely making out the lights. so visibility is a problem hon the oakland side approaching the

bridge, across the span it's a little better. watch all the bay area bridges. back to you. >> thank you very much. it looked like an orange shot from mars. santa clara county is bracing for the cold season to open three homeless shelters starting tonight. the shelters in gilroy, sunnyvale and san jose will open at 6:00 a.m. they'll provide 365 emergency beds from now through the end of march. now these beds are in a first come, first serve basis. the county is making an effort to help the long-term chronically homeless. they will try to find permanent housing for those in bad health and have been on the streets the longest. >> oakland is putting a freeze on new pawnshops to curb crime. many secondhand dealers are prime destinations for criminals to get cash for stolen gold. so they're putting a moratorium on pawnshops to give themselves enough time to tighten rules and

regulatio regulations. the most affected area is the fruitvale district. sad but true. but the grinch could get in the way of a northbay holiday tradition. every year they spread know on the streets of downtown but the city will not have the money to pay for the event next year. the city says it can only come up with $20,000, but it needs $20,000 more in donations to ensure the parade of lights and winter wonder land will go off as planned. a massive apartment fire leafs a number of people homeless. the latest details coming up. plus the bay area arrested shoplifting may have a history of theft. >>

60 people are homeless this morning after a fire tore through their apartment building. the fire broke out at the village green apartments in cupertino on homestead road just before 6:00 saturday night. it happened right next to homestead high school. 16 apartments were damaged including 6, which were completely destroyed.

the fire department says the fire began when a woman was cooking french fries and forgot about them. no one was hurt, but the fire caused $2 million in damage. an east bay assemblywoman arrested for shoplifting was already on the store's radar. a neiman marcus sales clerk thought she was shoplifting a week before she was arrested. then on october 25th she was back in the tore. so security started to track her. she was arrested outside the san francisco store for allegedly shoplifting more than $2,400 worth of merchandise. well, it's a strong day ahead on wall street. scott mcgrew joins us to tell us all. >> technically the markets were open on friday. but trading was very light. the dow could jump more than 200 points on really strong retail sales. new records were set over the black friday and black friday weekend. and of course, cyber monday

good morning, everybody. it's closing in on 6:30. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everyone. i'm jon kelley. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren to tell us about the fog forecast. >> cyber monday. a lot of people probably want to take their smart phone and start working away. it's against the law. but this morning we have dangerous fog out there. if you're not alert, it could catch you off guard. really thick pockets. less than a quarter mile visibility in oakland. so just hold off on the smart phone. remember, we have all day at the office to handle that business. how we doing on the roads, mike? >> well, i'm not going to touch the shopping. the low visibility is an issue. if you're looking for the roadway, that's great. watch out for this southbound 880 at industrial parkway. reports of wood in the middle two lanes. it's tough to see.

tougher to see anything there. so lower the speeds and give yourself more reaction time. >> okay, mike. thank you very much. 6:29. it's going to be noisy at several uc campuses as protesters gather for a day of action with a meeting between members of the board of uc regents. damien trujillo is live at ucsf with a look at the demonstrations taking place. i know security is high right now, huh? >> it is. the meeting begins in two and a half hours. security is really tight. you can probably see the barricades in the background and still a couple of dozen police officers inside the mission bay conference center here at ucsf. we're in the industrial area around the corner from at&t park. this is a rescheduled meeting buy the board of regents. they canceled the last meeting for security concerns. fears of angry students storming the event. now we have big screens from four campuses, including here at

there are already a couple of dozen of them inside at this point. they're expecting a lot of protesters. we haven't seen one protester yet, but we will be waiting. we're live in san francisco for today in the bay. >> the officers are filing in one at a type. >> it is 6:32. police looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman as she was walking on the del delta de anza trail. a man grabbed her from behind. he reached up under her skirt and fondled her before running away. the man is described as hispanic in his 20s, about 6'0" with a thick build and curly black hair that covered his forehead. he's reported to have pimples on his cheeks. call the east bay regional park district if you have information about the attacks. funeral plans under way for a community college basketball player killed in a car crash. the funeral for 19-year-old

gaines will be held at 11:00 saturday morning in the gym in gilroy. gaines died november 18 thd. he had been on life support since november 6th when he and two teammates and two other passengers were involved in a car accident. the other passengers were not hurt and will recovery. rather they were hurt but they will recover. the police are looking into what caused the crash but say it appears the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. an unsolved murder left a grieving mother searching for my kind of answers. christine evans came from san francisco to san diego to find out who killed her son. brandon evans was shot and killed on november 29th in golden gate park. police say he was at a party near the horseshoes pit when he left to get a cell phone from his car. that is when police say he was

shot. three years later the case is still open. >> all we can do is beg the community. come forward with this information and please give us closure. my son didn't deserve what he got. this is why i come out here. because i can't go on in life without knowing that the person that took my son's life is paying for it. >> brandon moved to the city just three weeks before his death. a $100,000 reward is being offered in this case. parishioners on patrol. members of the antioch church are standing guard to keep thieves from targeting their place of worship. burglars hit the church four time this is year, usually stealing copper wire.

presidential candidate newt gingrich is on a roll this morning after getting a key newspaper endorsement. brian mooar is live in washington, d.c. with the latest twist on the republican race for president. brian, good morning. hi, marla. newt gingrich, former house speaker, has gotten a pat on the back from the new hampshire leader. that's a coveted newspaper endorsement. but it's almost a little bit of a slap in the face. it says that gingrich is not a perfect candidate, but says that he is a lot better than mitt romney. it says that mitt romney is a sort of play it safe kind of guy, and it almost frames newt gingrich as the lesser of two evils. but make no mistake about it, with iowa just 36 days away now, it's an important boost for the gingrich campaign, which is really starting to pick up a lot of momentum. with the momentum comes a lot more campaign cash, and at the same time a lot more scrutiny. it's been a bit of a

there. one of the mornings where i'm not going to sugar coat it for you at all. really, really thick patches, basically wherever you head. take a look at this live picture from high atop san bruno. and this is really cool observational science lesson. what happens is the sun comes out. it warms up the top layer, so it actually clears for the top down. that's what's starting to happen. you can see the fog swirling around. so just because you walk out your front door and you don't get socked in immediately doesn't mean your not going to encounter thick patches on the highway. take it easy out there. give yourself ample time. and we don't see a lot of day where is the fog is this widespread. really no relief from this from san jose through the north bay. let's take you live to sunol. you can notice the fog is creeping up from the highway. that's good news. our highway man mike inouye is watching the roads. let's get to the maps. as we stop the clock on the

future cast at 9:00 a.m. we'll see a break. some sunshine over the south bay on the peninsula. that will warm you up to the 60s. it looks like the warmest in the south bay, and then we'll clear out through the evening hours. it's going to take time for places like livermore to see the sun. quiet start to the week courtesy of high pressure. that's why we have the dense fog. all the way across here. you'll find reduced visibility. so take it easy out there. as we head throughout the week we'll see changes on the way. windy conditions develop. those will last all the way through thursday. good news is no rain in the forecast. let's check the drive with mike. >> the traffic note of the day is the same as your weather. dense fog around the bay area. now we are seeing commute traffic kicking in northbound 101 starting right here.

capital expressway all the way up to the airport. no other freeways showing major slowing yet. but that will have a ripple effect as it builds. 680 through sunol. we have the fog just above the highway. it's causing an issue as you head up and the roadwayizes. slow also into the area down through pleasanton and in towards sunol as well. we'll get a live look out there and see how things are shaping up at the toll plaza. we have a nice layer of fog. so lower the speeds so you have more stopping distance. guys, back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. 6:47. in los angeles wall street protepr protesters are holding firm despite a midnight deadline to leave their encampment. police still haven't taken much action against protesters at a

park by city hall. earlier police said arrests were likely. and so far just four arrests have been made. officers say the crowd has been pretty cooperative so far. new plans in the work for protesters to occupy frank ogawa plaza. protesters plan to retake the plaza with a 24 hour a day, seven day a week vigil. they have not cleared it with the police department. they were forced out of the plaza earlier the month when they raided the city and tore down the encampment. right now a bay area firefighter who served in iraq is fighting for his life this morning. after suffering traumatic brain injuries. he got into a fight with a man

shown in this video. he got into his car and intentionally ran into him before taking off. >> as you can imagine, it would be tough for anybody. you know, what the family is going through. >> police say the suspect a mixed race or latino man between 18 and 24 years old. he was seen driving a black suv. possiblily a mazda cx. the police officer is expected in court for today. 37-year-old henry smith should enter a plea this afternoon. smith is charged with killing veteran officer james capoot who was shot almost two weeks ago after a bank robbery. smith is being held in that

salano county jail without bail. today his lawyer will ask a judge to exclude cameras from the courtroom. a funeral procession will be held for a marine killed in action. his family will receive his remains at travis air force base this morning. they will make their way southbound 680. his body will be sent to a funeral home on hearts way. this morning police are looking at half-moon bay for a missing bother. rodrigo ruiz did not return yesterday afternoon. the u.s. coast guard along with state and local agencies have been searching for him since then. now ruiz is in his 30s, about

the consumer accounts for 70% of the american economy. the dow industrial is up better than 300 points this morning. s&p 500 up 35. local stocks, electronics rocking up 5%. netflix is up almost 6% this morning. as far as cyber monday goes, you can see lots of deals. a couple of different companies requiring you to follow their tweets or follow facebook, like them on facebook to get some really good deals. a billion dollars is the number to beat as far as last year's record goes. cyber monday invented by the national retail federation back in 2005. these days we don't need to go to work to get the high speed internet. we have our smart phones. >> it's scary. >> the time is 6:55. time for one final foggy check

>> they are not acting. now the crowd first thought the fight was a joke, but clearly it's not. former cal coach and his former cfl rival angelo moska were being honored at a luncheon. both men are 73 years old. it looks like the fight started when he offered maska a flower. he said something we cannot say on morning tv. then the fight broke out. apparently there was an incident more than 30 years ago on the football field between the two. you think? well, stanford is number four according to the latest bcs poll, and that means the cardinals should get to play in a bowl game. the top five teams in the rankings are guaranteed a bowl bid. the question is which one will the cardinals get. two of the four teams ranked above stanford still have a game to play as both are upset. there's a slim chance stanford could work itself way to the bcs
