freeway. i have a note if you're heading out the door. sounds like that might be where the activity is. things are calmer as far as the winds go. >> i am the meteorologist. we are looking pretty good. the winds are calming down. still shaky in the higher elevations over the open water. overall the winds are decreasing. we have a three-hour period of gusty winds continue to pump through the bay area. we have your weekend numbers. right now i'll send it back to you guys. >> crews have been working through the night to clear broken tree branches off a lot of roads. marla tellez joins us live where several fallen trees caused problems on the freeway. good morning.

you can hear the workers behind me this morning on north 17th and joule yen. check this out. this tree near ly snapped at th base and landed on top of the jeep cherokee. obviously not a nice to come home to. i spoke to a couple neighbors. they say they didn't sleep much because of all the noise. >> i hurricane. i was amazed from all the stuff that was flying last night. >> so this isn't typical down here? >> no, it's not. >> now other downtown neighborhoods are waking up to down trees as well. we did a drive through and found branches and trees down at a few more locations. one home on north p 18th street. narrowly escaped a tree from collapsing on it.

crews had their hands full this morning. all in all close to 2,000 people are without power in the south bay right now. the hardest hit area remains to be the santa cruz county area where 25,000 people remain in the dark this morning. the entire san lorenzo valley unified district does not have school. there's no power in the santa cruz mountains. back here live. if you're doing to be in the downtown area, north 17th is closed between julian and washington. the guys behind me will be here for the next couple of hours. >> i would imagine. >> reporting from downtown san jose, i'm marla tellez. >> tough to be that car owner walking out there in the morning. all the high winds being blamed for fuelling a fire that destroyed two homes and damaged a third in livermore. that fire broke out yesterday

afternoon at a home in the 600 block of andrew street. investigators say strong winds propelled the flames to neighboring homes. damage estimated at $400,000. the cause is under investigation. >> this morning police are searching for a man maskqueradig as one of their own. wednesday night he stopped a woman. the man asked for her license, registration and car keys. he also asked if she had anything illegal or edible in the car. police say he took the keys and drove away. the man accused of shooting a police officer will remain under wraps. a judge issued a gag order. lawyers for both sides cannot talk publicly about the case. 37-year-old henry smith jr.

accused of shooting james capoot after a bank robbery and chase. he pleaded not guilty on dpes 9th. the judge will issue a guard order for the police. a funeral for a south bay community college player killed in a car crash. he died on november 18th. he was on life support since november 6th. he, two teammates and two other passengers were involved in a car accident. the other passengers were injured but they will recover. tomorrow's funeral will be held at the community college in gilroy at 11:00 a.m. this morning a new occupy camp popping up in san francisco. in time on the campus of san francisco state. students pitching seven tents last night according to the san francisco chronicle. they marched the plaza after meeting with the university president. students asked him to sign a letter demanding the csu system roll back tuition to 2009

levels. he says he understands their anger, but tuition hikes are the only way to keep the doors open since the state has slashed the funding. police tracked a murder suspect across the country. this morning he's charged with killing an occupy oakland camper. 20-year-old norris tarell was arrested in kentucky. cell phone video obtained by nbc bay area helped them track down the shooter. he's been charted with shooting a 25-year-old foster last month. three other suspects have been charged with assault. a couple reasons to celebrate. it is friday, and it started out warm. >> it's feeling a lot like christmas. all the lights going up.

that was one of the biggest gripes from people across the bay area. the christmas tree ornaments and decorations were flying around. this morning you are going to be waking up with us. take it easy. overall the trend is the winds will decrease over the next few hours. 92 miles per hour in mount hamilton. a category 1 hurricane starts at 74 miles per hour. los gatos, oakland, livermore. now today we'll see the numbers pretty much drop in half as we head throughout the next three hours, and then they'll really start to drop out throughout the second half of your day.

welcome back, everyone. day two of december. it is early out there. that's up in san francisco. base yourself. it is 5:13. the wild wind we've been talking about causing a lot ov damage all over the state. this is what it looked like in cedar ridge. a tree fell through the roof of the home and into an elderry woman's lap. her son was in the home and had to call for help. the woman's condition is not

known at the time. my goodness. >> can you imagine sitting in the living room having a tree in your lap? >> can you imagine that? a tree in your lap. good thing that wasn't the case. very dangerous situation for places in the higher elevations over the past 48 hours. now this morning we have a lot of improvement already. especially if you divide the bay area into two sections. north and south. the south end we see the most improvement. instead of 30 miles per hour wind speeds, they drop to 5 to 15 miles per hour and continuously drop off throughout the day. that's all we expect thout the day. no more of the 45 or 50 miles per hour gusts. i want to point this out. we had a tight pressure gradient because of the area of low

pressure. this is working against an area of high pressure to situate over the great basin. winds are pushing off to the northeast, that's drying us out. it's a dry flow. you might have to use your chap stick or extra moisturizer because of the dry flow. now you can see that trough of low pressure moving in just to the north of the bay area. that is going to push both systems out of here. and that will bring about an onshore flow. the winds will relax throughout the morning hours. 62 in oakland. 64 in napa. where we're getting the strongest winds, that's where it the warmest. 64 in novato. 59 in fairfield. gilroy dropped to 30 degrees. that's because the winds are laxing. temperatures will jump to the 70s. as you can see here, we're going to hit the mid-70s in some cities like san jose and concord. onshore flow really picks up on sunday.

no major issues aside from one accident northbound 280. this shouldn't be affecting lanes or the offramp there. over the weekend, tonight and extending through monday morning. ing by 5:00 on monday. 101 closed between capitol expressway and the 280, 680 interchange. it will affect both directions. the peninsula looks really nice. however things will be stopped up for a tad bit more. construction crews should be clearing right now. but prepare for a minor detour through the area. they may still have it cleared by the time you get there. looking out to the bay bridge. on the okay land side. a smooth drive.

an easy drive down the east shore freeway. another live look shows you okay lan land. >> what happens on the markets could hinge on the monthly jobs report. for that we turn to jackie deangeles. >> the futures are higher. it's expected to show companies increased hiring in november. the forecast is calling for 125,000 jobs to have been created versus 80,000 in october. stocks closed mix on thursday as investors took a pause following wednesday's huge rally. the dough slipped 25 points.

president obama and former president clinton are set to announce a $4 billion commitment by the federal government an or companies to make buildings and factories more energy efficient. we could see that over the next several years. finally, general motors is offering to buy back chevy volts from owners who fear firing as they look into the electric vehicle's battery. the safety probe comes after crash tests resulted in sparks and fires from battery packs days or weeks after the test. >> it is 5:18 right now. major changes coming to a legendary bay area radio

station. they will all be off the air starting on monday. that is so kgo can go to an all news format. they own four stations in the market. including knbr. they want to be known as the bay area news and information station. commuters may spot game wardens toting tranquilizer guns. not the drivers they're after, it's the deer. happy to report that. they will track deer movements. the wardens will catch 15 deer and research them after fitting them with radio collars. they want to see how and wear the animals move along the

a new development in the north bay dog scheduled to be euthanized. the animal shelter has agreed not to euthanize him until a judge can rule on a pending lawsuit. a man sued the sheller saying the kill policy was questionable. the shelter says cash is

aggressive. the man says it's not true. that cash needs a little training. supporters of cash set up a facebook page called save the dog named cash. the former san francisco police department lab technician is now facing federal charges. 61-year-old deborah maden was named in an indictment. the san mateo woman skimmed cocaine from police evidence during a three-month period in 2009. they failed to gather enough evidence to charge her. she resigned from her post shortly before lab supervisors began to suspect she was skimming the drugs. the raiders are waiting to see if a key player will show up to practice this morning. starting middle linebacker rolan mcclan was arrested wednesday night. this was a picture of him smiling. he was charged with four snee

misdemeanors. he was released after posting bail. he was in indiana for his grandfather's funeral. on wednesday night he got into a fight with this man, richard tapscot. he told police he was on his way back to the car when he grabbed a pistol and aimed it at him. he held it next to his ear and fire it. the raiders believe he will be available to play on sunday. >> just like he is all over the world, santa claus is coming to contra costa county. this time he's not traveling by sleigh. he won't have a reindeer out there. he will drop in at 10:00 a.m. and then at 2:00 in the afternoon, he'll jump sbak into a plane and parachute into the byron airport. they'll listen to christmas

pittsburgh. that's the yellow line. on the roads we're looking at the bay bridge. on the incline there may be a stall. speaking of the bridge. there may be gusty winds, but nothing like yesterday. what's going on today. >> nothing like yesterday. foeg expl -- nothing explains it like this. the santa cruz mountains finally getting a break from the relentless wind over the past two days. in napa and fairfield, it's still strong. strong gusts in the north bay, and in the east bay hills as well. that's the higher elevations. we'll see the numbers drop off through the next few hours. i'll show you this map and show you how the winds are dying down. we are dealing with aftermath in the cities that don't usually see this kind of wind. san jose, which brings us to our

own marla tellez. she's out there. what is that behind you? what is cleanup. >> yeah, talk about timber. check this out. this tree on north 17th and julien in downtown san jose took a beating from the long-term heavy winds. this is the result. snap, right on tap of this parked jeep cherokee. it has north 17th shut down between julien and washington. they made quite a bit of progress in the last hour. this tree may have gotten three quarters of the way finished. neighbors cannot believe what they're seeing. one man tells me it sounded like a hurricane for much of the night. >> yeah. i was actually amazed from all the stuff that was flying last night. >> so this isn't typical down here? >> no.

not at all. now in other areas of downtown san jose, more trees are down. branchs and limbs on many streets. the late es numbers for pg&e show close to 250 people without power. the bulk of the powerless, they remain in the santa cruz mountains where close to 25,000 people are in the dark this morning. the entire school district is closed because there's no power there. back here live on north 17th. north 17th is closed between julien and washington. crews tell me it will be another hour or so until they get the tree completely cleared away. reporting from downtown san jose this morning, i'm marla tellez, laura, jon. >> marla, thank you very much. may want to get yourself some

ear plugs. for the most up to date weather where you live, log onto nbcbayarea.com and click on weather. >> it is 5:31 now. the woman accused of killing an east bay nursing student is expected in court this morning. 27-year-old giselle esteban is expected to enter a plea. she's charged with killing 26-year-old michelle le. she disappeared in the middle of her shift on may 27th. her body was found in mid-september. is this. police think they found the suv used to run down a san francisco firefighter. it was a rental car that was never returned. they found it in the bay view neighborhood. there was front end damage to the suv. ed doe is accused of using the vehicle to ram and critically injure albert bartall. the two got in a fight at a restaurant earlier in the day. this morning the family of

an attorney killed during an evening jog is hoping a reward will encourage witnesses to come forward. in struck and killed 63-year-old don casper while he jogged back in august. it's a white ford f150 lariat with a gold stripe on the bottom. his family is offering $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver. casper was a prominent attorney in san francisco. an active republican who worked on establishing benefits for city employees. the mayor of san francisco says time and patience is just wearing thin when occupy protesters camped out. mayor lee says he's getting close. if protesters don't agree to move to a city sanction site. the department of public health

says the tent city in the plaza is unsanitary. lee is fhas not given a time li for how long he'll give the protesters. he says it's an all or nothing deal. protesters have been camping out for two months. a looming budget has been slashed by more than half. damien trujillo joins us live where the unions will hold a news conference later today challenging city leaders. anger is certainly building over this. >> a lot of anger 689 a huge risk to the unions and city halls. the mayor would ask them to declare a fiscal emergency at tuesday's city council meeting. now this is urging the city council member to hold out.

we were sandwiched between the two systems. all the wind came out of the northeast. drying as it moved from land to sea. if high pressure retreats to the east. same with low pressure. leaving us with a nice mild second half of the day. lots of sunshine and warm temperatures. we'll see mid-70s and quite a few in the bay. gusty through the hills. gusts i think will stay below 50 at this point. those poised in the higher elevations. look at what the temperatures are like where you're getting strong winds. you'll hit 75 up there later on today. >> let's look at folks heading throughout the east bay. got a few things to watch out.

welcome back, everyone. a nice clear picture of the golden gate bridge. a stark difference to this what we saw yesterday. the shake, rattle and roll view. the winds are slowing down. christina loren will fill you in on everything. the time is 5:42. monthly jobless numbers just released. tracie potts joins us live in washington with the details. they thought the 9 pblgt jobless rate would stay flat. it dropped to 8.6%. 120,000 new jobs were created last month. plus revisions for the two-month up 72,000 more jobs than they

arjly counted. certainly good news for a struggling economy and a struggling recovery. one thing to have an effect on growth, next year, economists say is whether or not congress can get the payroll tax cut extended. they have yet to come up with a way to pay for that. so now they have a couple of weeks to figure out how to get that extended, plus, unemployment benefits for the $13 million american who is remain unemployed. we haven't seen this unemployment number since march of 2009. >> big difference. big numbers. governor jerry brown will be introducing a plan to raise taxes on the wealthy and bump up the sales tax here in california.

it would also increase the the sales tax by half a cent. the measure could raise about $7 billion. but it would have to be approved by voters on the 2012 ballot. >> it's a ruling that could prevent thousands of cancer deaths. bonn m bone marrow donors can be paid. it makes selling vital organs a felon. an appeals court says it's very similar to giving blood or plaza. the donors can only be compensate compensated -- if they use the new technology. this morning a deadly air bag problem is forcing honda to recall hundred of thousands of cars.

honda is recalling 304,000 cars worldwide, including models like accord, civic, odyssey, pilot and cr-v. they were all made in 2001 and 2002. honda says air bags can inflate with too much pressure in a crash, sending metal and plastic pieces flying. on da says the there have been 20 accidents related to the problem so far, including two deaths in 2009. >> we've seen a little bit of everything this week. thick fog, a lot of wind. now the sunshine is coming. for the past four weeks we've had thick fog or very strong winds and rain. this weekend is looking quiet. 92 miles per hour wind kbuss. that was not the highest that we clocked. just one hour flights out of

oakland. saw wind gusts of 150 miles per hour. that's 11,000 feet. but that is a very, very strong wind gust. category five hurricane. starts at 155 plus. that puts it in perspective for you. they have died down substantially. still getting strong gusts in the north bay and higher elevations. cameras are shaking a bit. we do have higher elevations. take a look at what's happening. you can slice the bay area in half. that's where the winds are really starting to relax. especially san jose, sunnyvale and gilroy where we have strong winds at this time. the first time in about 48 hours. the reason for the wind, a very tight pressure gradient. we have a low pressure system that's been sitting and spinning just to our south. and an area of high pressure to the north. so what happens is the two work against each other. you see the clockwise flow from the high pressure working against the counter clockwise flow on the really strong air

j johannes mehserle has been cleared of using excessive force in a separate case. weeks before grant's death kenneth carrethers said mehserle and four other officers kicked, punched and hog tied him after he complained his car was broken into. he thought he was about to attack him and the other bart police. yesterday the seven member jury in the federal civil suit rejected carrethers' claim, deciding the officers acted appropriately. 5:49. the bart board approved a first of its kind cell phone policy. only in the event of extr extraordinary set. the board is drafting the policy after the agency was just blasted for shutting off cell service to divert a protest back in august. under the new plan the agency would only be able to shut off service in ha 911 type of event.

this holiday season, smart phone mugs are on the rise, and police say holiday shoppers are the prime target. police reported 40 cell phone muggings last month in san francisco alone. a good portion happened near the heart of the mecca in union square. the targets are women, disabled and young people. the robberies almost always involve some sort of physical violence. a punch in the face, a knife, or a gun to the head. >> the 49ers are on fire on the field. not literally. but they won't try to cash in on this success next season.

welcome back, everyone. it is 5:54. a routine trip to the grocery store turned into a possible hate crime. a 32-year-old man says he was leaving a lucky supermarket in san jose when he was assaulted by a group of men. he says they beat him, hit him with a tequila bottle, hit him and called him a terrorist. he had to go into surgery for a broken jaw suffered during the attack. he came from india as a child and works as an industrial designer. investigators working into whether the store surveillance camera documented the attack. >> it is 5:54. a staged robbery scene was mistaken for a real life crime

in san francisco. it happened at alpha market in the city's coal valley neighborhood. a film crew was shooting a robbery scene at the store. police say a passerby called 911 to report a masked man inside the store. officers arrived to find a man pointing the gun at the ceiling. police tackled him and discovered the gun was fake. the they had received the storm's permission to film but hadn't applied for a permit from the san francisco film commission. no one ruz arrest. the holiday has people in the helping spirit. an outpouring of the support from our viewers over the bay area for children living in foster care this holiday season. alternative family services has received hundreds of dollars in donations since they shared their story. they are serving over 500 foster kids and hopes to put presents under the tree for all of them. donations are a good start. the organizations still have a long way to go on this.
