3rd, 2011. >> from nbc news, this is today. live from studio 1a. >> good morning, everyone. welco welcome to today on a saturday. >> we've got some breaking news this morning. jerry sandusky breaking his silence once again and claiming the sexual abuse allegations against him are false. >> sandusky told the new york times he's not the monster that people think he is. he also spoke about the alleged shower incident. we're going to bring you more to find out how his words might impakt the case against him. >> will the em battled candidate
5:02 am
withdraw from the race? >> a bit later on, he's the man behind pop culture icons like the odd couple, laverne and shirley and the fos? now, gary marshal is giving people a reason to believe again. i'll bring you that conversation coming up in our next hour. >> did you show him your fonz? >> oh, i wanted to try the leather jacket. >> did you know that consumers spend almost a day trying to figure out what to buy loved ones during a holiday season? many are still paying off last year's holiday shopping bill. we'll tell you about some of the biggest mistakes holiday shoppers make. >> a lot to get to, but, first, let's turn to the jerry sandusky story. michael, nbc news national correspondent joining us from state college. michael, good morning.
5:03 am
>> reporter: good morning, lester. in the interview, sandusky describes himself as a misunderstood father figure who gave gifts and money to children, but never sexually abused them. he also describes a crucial moment in 2002 when penn state's then athletic director confronts him about an allegation that he was engaged in sexually improper behavior with a young boy in the penn state locker room. let's listen to what he had to say. >> in my mind, there wasn't inappropriate behavior. and i said if you want, you could speak to the young person that was involved. >> and then what, did he take your key sns. >> no, he didn't take my keys. i still had my keys. i have still went in there and worked out. >> in another revealing moment, sandusky tries to explain his
5:04 am
seemingly hesitant response when nbc's bob costa asked him if he was sexually attracted to young boys. >> i was sitting there saying what in the world is this question? what, you know, am i going to be -- if i say no, i'm not attracted to boys, that's not the truth because i'm attracted to young people, boys, girls -- >> but it's not sexual. >> right. i enjoy -- that's what i was trying to say. i enjoy spending time with young people. i enjoy spending time with people. >> reporter: in addition to gifts, sandusky also says in the interview he even opened up bank accounts for children. he says it showed how much he cared about them. but prosecutors say that sandusky's financial favors fits
5:05 am
a pattern. it's an example of how he sought to gain their trust in order to sexually abuse them. >> state college for us, michael, thank you. joining us now with some insight is former prosecutor karen desoto. interesting that he admits some of the things liking young people, giving them gifts t same things that prosecution will use to say he was grooming kids. is this an attempt to muddy the waters to say it's perfectly natural to want to do nice things for children? >> attempt to muddy the waters? absolutely. the allegations are so there's nine different children who have very specific details. so, as you can tell from the interview, he cherry picks certain things and is very specific about what he's saying whand and what he's not saying. it's really interesting what he does admit to, which is being in showers afterhours, he admitted
5:06 am
to the incidents happen. this is why you don't allow your client to talk because these statements are definitely going to be used against him because it corroborates that the incidents took place. >> at the same time, if he could come out with blanket denial, that might not seem credible. but by coming half way and saying, listen, i was in the shower and trying to come up with other explanations, perhaps that works for the defense on some level? >> i don't think it does. when you cherry pick certain facts, it really corroborate that is these incidents took place. they were kind of inappropriate or half way appropriate sf really, lester, let's actually think about it. i played sports. i played high school sports. i never had a coach in the showers with me. ever. i can never think of an incident where a coach was actually in the shower. so he admits to showering with children. that is inappropriate. so now you're going to say it
5:07 am
was kind of inappropriate, but it wasn't really inappropriate. jurors don't look at facts that way. if it's inappropriate on one level, it's inappropriate. >> he's fascinating when they say they didn't take the keys away from him. he was told not to go anywhere with if children anywhere. but is this going to blow back on the university again? the notion that they didn't do enough to stop him? >> well, listen. the blow back on the university is already done because you have two officials who have been brought up on criminal charges. but curley and schultz were said to have made false statements. so i think that the administration already has serious issues. >> and then he says joe patereno never talked to him about the
5:08 am
allegations. >> in 1999 he got rid of him which kind of leds credibility where the first allegations really came out in 1998. so what happens? joe paterno, as we all know, is a very famous, notable person. what does he do? i don't know if my bos would talk to me about being a pedophile. it blows back both ways because on the one hand, you say he got fired in 1999, so they all must have known about it. >> are we leading up to a plea deal now? might this be leading towards a deal? >> no, i don't think -- obviously, prosecutors want to make a deal because they want to save the taxpayers the money and resolve a situation. but if somebody is that adamant, and i can tell you in the cases that i've done, i've never had a
5:09 am
defendant that would say, okay, with ped feel ya, it's such a stigma attached to it, they will go the whole way. they don't want to admit to themselves that these things took place. so these are cases that actually do go to trial because nobody ever wants to admit to doing that type of disgusting thing to a child. so we're going to go to a trial. >> difficult subject. we're going to talk more about this in the coming hours, so stick around if you will. >> lester, thank you. republican presidential candidate herman cain is expected to announce today whether he's going to continue on or withdraw from the race. nbc's peter alexander reports. >> reporter: late friday night, cain returned home. >> i am reassessing because all of this media fire storm stuff. why? because my wife and family comes
5:10 am
first. >> cain's most recent comments come just days after ginger white came forward claiming she and the former god father's ceo had a 13-year affair. >> my wife did not know about it and that was the revelation and the surprise that my wife find out about it when she went public with it. >> while cain has described his relation shim as a long time friendship, the unemployed single mother of two claims it was more than that. >> it wasn't a love affair. it was a sexual affair. >> this latest con tro ver si. down from 23% one month ago. but his campaign is still pressing forward, launching new ads in iowa, including this one, that targets the media. >> it's time for the truth. the media won't tell you what one of the four most lie dedeck
5:11 am
tor experts said about herman cain. >> david gregory is a moderator of meet the press. good morning, david. okay, one person that's an insider said that cain is staying in. another insider says he's out whach what do we know at this point? >> speaking to the campaign last night, they insists that he had not made up his mind, that he was meeting with his wife and there were mixed signals, too. that they were planning for a december camcampaign. he's announcing a new campaign headquarters where he'll be making the announcement today. but a source that i talked to indicated that all of the impact on his family, his wife because of these allegations. and he simply doesn't want to go through it anymore. the source telling me he's got a lot of work to do at home. >> now, of course, he was on the campaign trail yesterday before heading home here. how much of an influence do we
5:12 am
know that his wife has in this decision. he's spoken to her, but he also said she wouldn't ask him to leave the race. >> we know as he indicated in pet peter's report, the relation shim whatever it was with ginger white was a surprise to his wife. as i say, sources i've talked to say this is a real problem with his wife, as anyone can imagine. and, again, even though they insist that no decision has been made, but all indications are leaning towards getting out of the race today. we put the caveats in there because the people i talked to, there was some distension within the campaign. there were people pushing for him to keep on. it's impossible to know where his head is. but, as i say, leaning toward getting out. >> but if he stays in the race, he's down 8% in some of the polls in iowa here. how does he contend at this
5:13 am
point? >> well, i don't know that he does. and i think that political reality, the des moines register poil, going down to 8%, he had been up 22, 23%. that's a real problem. we'll have new polling out of ie with and new hamp chir that will give the latest indication of where the race is. i think the inability for him to raise money or get back on any kind of message. the damage that this is doing to his family at some point he's going to have to ask himself whether it's worth it. and i think that moment has come. >> let's say he does drop out of the race, part of the reason he was so popular is that he was likable. that they liked his energy. could he go on and maybe even be running mate or get some endorsements that count? >> i don't think so. when you have things like this, i don't think somebody wants to take that on. and don't forget, this has been amplified by the fact that he had demonstrated real problems to be prepared as president.
5:14 am
so i think a lot of his support has already gone to newt gingridge. >> so he would be the person that benefits most? >> yes. >> all right, david, i know you have a great show planned for sunday. we'll be watching. >> new job numbers out on friday are giving unemployed american hope. the unemployment rate has fallen down to 8.6% from 9 and that puts it at its lowest level in about two and a half years. but it's a mixed bag. a third of jobs are in retail, many of them temporary for the holiday season. we get more from nbc's tom costello! from the mall to main street to wall street, today's unemployment numbers seemed to catch the county by surprise. you've got to go inside the numbe numbers. >> part of the gain come frs peep dropping out of the work force. but another number come frs more
