your not surprised you expected it to be that windy. >> still gusty. round two of the winds. not as strong as a couple of days ago. still, pretty breezy. dry air coming on in. look at the humidity. only 16%. not too windy in downtown. the foothills, wind gusts close to 30 around los gatos. sustained winds north of 24. that's the reason why the flag is whipping around from the shot you saw earlier. wind speeds around the bay area, 20-35 miles per hour. we will see this for our hilltops, especially for the north and east bay, probably through lunchtime. it will still be breezy and dry as we go through the day. we will expect high temperatures in the 60s, not quite as warm as yesterday. still pretty nice if you factor out the wind. pretty gusty at times. all this cool, dry air is setting us up for patchy frost. windy to start the weekend. quite chilly by tomorrow morning. a full look at the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >>.

>> today, "occupy san francisco" protesters are preparing to a mass march part of a planned day of action focused at tenant evictions and foreclosure. this is a video of a recent rally. before the mass march today, occupy protesters say they will rally at four different locations. the first starting at 11:00 at third street and palos avenue in the bayview district. another rally held at castro streets in the castro. at 1:00, they will hold a rally at 24th and mission in the mission district as well. they will all feed into the mass march headed to justin herman plaza. they will rally there at 3:00 this afternoon. religious groups will show their support for the occupy movement later today. several reverends will hold a march today to show their solidarity. this starts at 10:00 at fremont

and wall net and they will stop at bank branches where they will protest bank ceo salaries and call for compassion during foreclosures. from first to last one-time republican front-runner, herman cain, says he will make a big announcement on the future of his campaign. he is heading home to atlanta to meet with his wife and talk to supporters about whether he can continue on the campaign trail. this week, more allegations surfaced against him including a woman who claims a 13-year, extramarital affair which cain denies. cain says they were just friends. the presidential hopeful left carolina yesterday for his home state of georgia. "the washington post" reports that the gop candidate invited top supporters to atlanta this morning to give them advanced notice on his decision. a silicon valley company carrier, i.q., created cell phone technology that makes your smart phone more than just smart. it can turn it into an unwitting spy against you.

>> normally, the way you would protect yourself against something like this so that you wouldn't install suspicious software that you think of as an app. you wouldn't install a suspicious app. in this case, it was already installed. >> we don't know what they are doing with it. this lawsuit is designed to find out what it is and to put a stop to it. attorney ira rothkin filed a lawsuit to put a stop to the information gathering. >> they are installing the software whose only role it is is to siphon off the sites that consumers visit and other type of information and it does so on a real time basis. >> for its part, the mountain view company acknowledges its tracking technology in some 150 million phones. >> carrier i.q. released a statement on their website in response to the lawsuit saying in part they don't record, transmit or store information gained from your smart phone.

the company says software makes your phone better by delivering intelligence on the performance of your mobile device. >> a jewelry store heist caught on camera from beginning to end. >> we are shown 45 very dramatic seconds of surveillance video in which the accused thieves are less than subtle. >> the images were captured back in october at ben bridge july letters in valley view mall. two masked men walk in carrying handguns ordering employees and customers to back away, they then quickly pull out sledge hammers and get to work on the jewelry cases. swinging away as hard as they can, it takes more than a dozen blows to finally breakthrough. one thief reaches through to grab a handful of expensive rolex watches. the entire episode lasts less than a minute as they leave the store and take off in a stolen car. they didn't get away for long.

on november 9th, 34-year-old robert mcknight and 34-year-old robert shavira were arrested. they are suspects not just for this heist but for others as well as a casino robbery in san diego. >> that was garvin thomas recording. now, for the san francisco 49ers that say they have secured nearly all of the $1 billion they need to build a new stadium. the lenders include goldman sachs, u.s. bank and bank of america. combined, they are promising $850 million for construction of the ballpark next to great america theme park. the nfl and santa clara redevelopment agency are chipping in leaving a gap of $20 million. the city council is expected to give the final green light on the stadium's construction later this month. still on the bench, though, the oakland a's. this is a computer rendering of proposed sisco field for san jose. at a coalition group is throwing another curveball at san jose leaders who approved a land deal

in the breeze. rob mayeda says, not dangerous but certainly powerful winds that you will feel today. we want to talk about the elder statesman of american politics being treated at a hospital after suffering a fall. former south dakota senator and 1972 democratic presidential kand date, george mcgovern, fell on a cement floor on friday moments before he was to appear on a live c-span broadcast. we are told that mcgovern hit his head while walking to the set at dakota wesley an university. the daughter of the 89-year-old former politician says her father's condition could be very serious. during world war ii, the bay area made a significant contribution to the war errant. thousands of merchant marines were trained here to support troops in battle. nbc bay area joe rosato jr. has the story of a forgotten memorial for them in san mateo

county. >> reporter: at the eastern end of coyote point park in san mateo had views of the bay. jets rumbled overhead. an unlikely spot for a forgotten piece of the bay area's military past. >> the grounds are the same as beautiful as always with the u ka lip tus trees. absence is what we had. >> reporter: in 1942, these quiet woods weren't so quiet. with world war ii underway, they opened a center to train civilian mariners to deliver supplies to troops in battle. >> as part of our training, we would spend 24 hours in life boats out here in the bay overnight. >> reporter: they were known as the merchant marines. frank vitali was among the tr n trainees stationed here. >> another training was jumping into the pool and the water was burning. they would light the water to simulate a torpedo chip and

burning oiling. >> reporter: aside from the captain quarters and an arrested training tower, there is only a broken memorial as a reminder. >> it was broken off by vandals. it was dirt. it hadn't been taken care of that much. the site of the headless eagle upset san mateo park ranger. the eagle was replaced and new walls and plaques installed. >> they had a donation of the actual anchor. >> reporter: today, veterans and their families navigated the woods to visit the restored memorial for the first time. before getting cramer's call, many veterans groups didn't know the memorial existed. former coyote point trainee says it speaks to the merchant marines mostly overlooked contributions during war times. >> did you know that the merchant marines had the highest suspended of loss on a basis

these are sustained winds. not wind gusts. very gusty through solano county. winds generally out of the north/northeast. 50s outside. temperaturewise, not too bad. this very dry air and clear skies, things will be turning chilly a little bit later on tonight. let's talk about the wind advisory up at least officially through 10:00 this morning for the bay area hill tops. you will notice the breezy conditions through the afternoon. the winds will back off. we have seen highs in the low to mid-60s. tonight, as the wind stops with the clear skies, it is going to get cold very quickly, depending on how quickly the winds taper off. we could have patchy frost to wake up to tomorrow morning. radar view looks dry. we have mainly clear skies around the bay area. clouds zipping by to the south. we have a weather system cranking up the winds. gusty, northerly winds to start the day. very dry, high fire danger.

we are setting up for a chilly night where the lows to dip into a spot. almost everybody in the low 60s today. some of the exceptions were where the north winds come down through santa rosa. should see temperatures closer to the upper 60s. same story. 62, san jose. 62, san francisco. another set of temperatures i want you to take a look at. as you take me along the bay, temperatures akronk truck key, 34 for a high. lows in the high country, clothes to zero. that gives you an indication of how cold it is spilling down towards northern california. that cold air is helping to drive the winds, which we have from 20-30 miles per hour. tonight, things are going to turn chilly. we will see 30s and 40s tonight. tomorrow, less wind but it is going to be a cool day. we are going to have a chillier start to the morning. so it is going to take some time to warm up. dry weather for the first part

of december, that is an unusually dry-looking seven-day forecast. we could use the rain and some snow. >> the dry combined with the wind has created dangerous fire conditions. >> we will tell you a little bit about a fire in santa rosa. some of our bay area neighbors are still in the dark after two days of knock stop wind knocked out power. more than 14,000 homes and businesses in santa cruz county are still without power. in the south bay, 50 homes are in the dark. only a few scattered pg&e outages remain in parts of the north bay and east bay. in all, the wind storm is blamed for new yorking out power to more than half a million customers in central and northern california. if you are looking for something fun to do, head to san francisco union street hosting its fantasy of lights. it is entertainment that kids and adults like just same. thousands of holiday lights will transform union street into a

magical back drop for santa and the elves. the event runs from 3:00 to 7:00 from van ness to spy der street. in pleasantton, it is hosting the annual hometown celebration from 5:00 to 7:30 along downtown main street. there is a festive parade featuring a marching band. following the parade, a tree lighting in front of the museum on main street. main street will be closed to traffic starting at 4:00. the hometown holiday program is still in need of volunteers. you can volunteer by going to hometownholiday.com and there you can find more information. in oakland, the 12th annual comcast america children's holiday parade is set for this afternoon. this one starts at 2:00 at broadway and 11th and continues up to broadway and 20th street and south to lake merritt. we will have a story about an unusual band from jamaica which

complications from a surgery performed in the morning than at night according to a new study. some research has suggested higher complication rates from nighttime surgeries. the latest information indicates no such risk. any analyzed information from surgeries performed between 2005 and 2010. the rate of complications and death associated with surgery did not change significantly between morning, evening or even day, week, or month. so much for the saying, you can't chew gum and walk. a new stud did you says chewing gum five minutes before taking a test will increase performance. previous research showed any physical activity helped. the difference now is that activity can be as mild as chewing gum. there is a catch, though. you will want to toss that gum during the exam, because that was proven to be distracting.

>> a little amounts to a lot of different charities. that's how you get on numerous mailing lifts. the better business bureau puts charities against their accountability standards. >> we look at 20 different aspects of the charity's operation ranging from website disclosures to financing. >> you can check out the charities report on the bbb's website. it includes the way they spend their money. they say 54% of the charities it checks out meet the accountability standards. >> we are tough, a little over half of them meet our standards but that's what we are here for, to separate the cheat from the chaff and help people make good giving decisions. >> bewarery wary of charities spring up overnight. watch out for similar sounding names. they will use a name that sounds just like a legitimate one when they are phoney.

bay where in los gatos, a little hot day parade, a community parade, very cute. everybody gathering together. we will beholding on to our hats. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist, rob mayeda. the wind is going to continue? >> still pretty gusty. one gust getting close to 30, 40 miles an hour. san jose, 52 degrees. notice the humidity. call this breeze dried, whether you have the humidity down to 17%, northwest wind at 12. oakland, northeast winds at 14. 54 degrees, very dry. san francisco, 54 degrees. right there on water, humidity, 38%, very dry air that's spilling into the bay area this morning. north wind at 22 miles per hour. there, you see the peak winds. some of the stronger winds. through this morning and the north and east bay hills, we seal those gusts, 20-35 miles per hour. temperatures slowly climbing through the 60s as we head

through 4:00. warmest place, up towards santa rosa. breezy and dry. slight risk for elevated fire danger as long as the winds stay up. as they go calm, patchy frost. hope you are watching that. >> we will take any humidity we can get. new this morning, firefighters worked overnight to put out a wind blown fire in santa rosa. firefighters are keeping an eye out for hotspots. the flames just shot right into the air. this one happened near phillips avenue and todd road. the flames blackened about three or four acres. it has been windy overnight. investigators are trying to figure out what happened to spark the fire. also new, a motorcyclist crashed and died in san francisco. this happened on interstate 80 on the ramp that connects to southbound highway 101 just after 12:30. the man was taken to a hospital where he died. the accident closed several lanes of the connector ramp but

those lanes are now open again this morning. walking the beat to try and figure out who is behind the hail of bullets that left a 1-year-old oakland boy in critical condition. mayor jean quan went door to door in the very neighborhood where he was shot. today in the bay, cheryl hurt says the embattled mayor wants the violence to stop. some of her constituents say she is more worried about her reputation than the living conditions. >> we need to stop the code of silence around these shootings. >> reporter: a plea from the mayor. she and the acting chief go door to door asking people to help identify suspects in monday's mass shooting. seven people were injured, including 23-year-old hiram lawrence who is fighting for his life the achildren's hospital. >> $35,000. a yuck kid fighting this. what other motivation do you

need? >> reporter: they say the police detained five people that could be linked to the crime but are held on unrelated charges. the mayor and the chief and clergy want them caught. >> reporter: they know violence is wrong but it is a way of life. some people welcomed the mayor's surprise visit. others did not. >> i think the mayor coming outgoing door to door is a bunch of crap. her going door to door is not going to keep these people from killing each other. >> i have been on the streets 24 years and it takes a kid whose father i saw grow up down here to get shot in the head for the mayor and the chief of police to bring all you people down here and bring a light on this area. this area has been bad for a long time. >> these are tough times. a lot of people are pointing the finger at you. what do you have to say to them? >> i am just really trying to finish my street.

thank you. >> that was cheryl heard reporting. hiram lawrence remains in critical condition at children's hospital. there is a $35,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooters in this case. meanwhile, the family is clashing with hospital administrators over the child's care. the 23-month-old is in critical condition fighting to stay alive. the hospital says that he is not improving but she wants her baby to be given more time for recovery. >> unfortunately, we have come to a crossroad. we are unable to agree on the continuum of care for baby hiram. as a result, we are seeking support from patients' rights attorneys. >> the family is hoping to raise money for the baby today with a car wash that they are holding at 9901 pippen street in oakland at 10:00 this morning.

in oakland, a $10 million federal grant will help oakland strengthen its police force. 4 of 25 new hires will be filled by reinstating officers laid off last year. the additional officers will be assigned to areas outlined in mayor quan's 100 block anti-violence initiative. the occupation is not over despite concerns from the city. police and nearby businesses, san francisco's occupy protests is not leaving. thursday, the tension increased when police tried to put up barricades as they planned to start, watch rallies that are planned for later on this morning. they set up a perimeter police work to make sure the rally and march are orderly. religious groups in fremont will show their support for the occupy movement later today. several reverends will hold a

the group "stand for san jose" failed to form a proper review. the lawsuit alleges city leaders violated citizens' rights by not putting the land deal to a public vote. whatever happens in san jose, the a's must still wait for approval to move away from oakland. that approval has to come from baseball commissioner, bud selig. busted for serious worker violations, osha fired the san francisco fire department for safety violations in the death of two firefighters killed while battling a house fire in june. they say they failed to keep in contact with lieutenant vary lez and anthony valario after they entered a burning building. it said they failed to respond quickly to their radio call for help. it says the department did not have the required number of firefighters on stand by to assist perez and valario.

crawling, flying technology. >> it looks like a giant cockroach from a science fiction movie. remote-controlled critters equipped with a camera and transmitter made to look like a bug. >> we look at animals for our inspiration. they are designed to do things with a small body size. >> reporter: kevin peterson is working at uc berkeley's lab designing and tweaking these robots while government agencies eagerly wait for the perfect model. they want to use robots in war sending machines in for a look before troops have to. after earthquakes and tsunamis like we saw in japan, emergency workers can send robots walking into dangerous tight spaces to search for survivors. >> search and rescue or investigation of places where humans are, one of the scenarios we look at is collapsed build, and earthquake rescue. you can't send humans in because it is too unstable and
