area. it's going to be there for the next couple days as well. more of the same. cold start making way to a mild afternoon. temperatures below freezing in many cities. 32 degrees in livermore. 27 in gilroy. we'll drop off when we check the ratings in about ten minutes, they will be lower. stay tuned for that. also a little rain in the forecast. we'll show you when that arrives. mike has an area that could slow you down in the south bay. >> shifting our attention to san jose. southbound 280 heading towards mclaughlin, if you're heading to the 680/101 interchange, an accident happened in the last few minutes, a car went into a guard rail. ambulance is heading the the scene. we'll track whether or not anyone was injured and whether any lanes are blocked. none reported by chp. i'll give you the ep date in a few minutes. 6:01 right now. the occupy movement in san francisco has faced another police raid this morning. after rejecting an offer to relocate to a vacant lot in the

mission district last week, they were all moved out. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live where san francisco police moved in early, closing the encampment at justin herman plaza. what's it looking like here. >> reporter: there still is a police presence around the plaza. that's because there are still some occupiers lingering on the periphe periphery. what police are telling me is they want to make sure the folks from dpw, department of public works, can go ahead and clean here without being disturbed. it's important to make sure people keep their distance from there. it's much quieter than it was. the cleanup, i can tell you, has been going on here for hours since police moved in overnight. what's happening now is they're putting a lot of stuff into dpw trucks, and they're telling us that for the occupiers who want those things back, they're trying to separate the trash from people's belongings and

people's belongings will be taken downtown and they can come reclaim them later. what happened is that san francisco police moved in overnight, about 1:00 in the morning. they gave a five-minute warning over a loud speaker to occupiers at the plaza to leave. what police are telling us is that half the camp got up, packed up and left on their own, and then for those who didn't, those who stayed, they were arrested. new numbers telling us about 70 people were arrested overnight. some others left and they came back and blocked market street. police say that someone threw a metal chair at two officers, and they were arrested for assault, those people, we asked the chief why that's decided to move in this morning. >> the mayor has been really thoughtfully and patiently negotiating with occupy leadership.

as of about yesterday, director nuru who has been the point person for the day-to-day contact was getting no return e-mails. department heads went over and looked at the site in the mission. it appeared all communication had broken off. after the aggressive attack on the officers and other city workers last thursday, it appeared the group had deteriorated and had not only become a health hazard inside, but becoming a public safety hazard to the outside. so the decision was made to clean it up. >> reporter: i had one october prior tell me this morning that she was arrested and she saw some demonstrators being roughed up. we didn't see that ourselves. the october pirg are lingering. they felt the five-minute warning was just a little too short to gther their things and they're concerned about getting them back. at this point the question is what are they going to do next. we heard about plans that they were going to try to reoccupy this location.

police are saying for now they'll keep a presence in the short term at least to make sure the plaza is cleaned up. reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith, jon and laura, back to you. >> thanks very much for the update. this is not the first time police have moved in on the encampment. on november 20th police removed several tents from market street. they moved in after warning protesters several times the encampment was illegal. back in october police moved in within a few blocks of the justin herman camp. police called off the raid a few hours later without taking any action. several city supervisors stood with protesters and denounced the police action. 6:05 right now. san jose voters could have their say on a pension reform measure coming in june. the city council approving of the language in a 6-5 vote last week. mayor chuck reed pushing the plan to overhaul pensions to prevent more police lay-offs and

cuts in city services. city workers and retirees they object to the plan. the girlfriend of the man accused of running down a cal firefighter on thanksgiving day will be in court today. alyssa tejada will be arraigned as an accessory to the crime. prosecutors say she tried to cover up the crime but will not say exactly how. tejada's boyfriend, eduardo esquivel is charged with running over edward bar tall in san francisco. he was apparently upset after getting into a fight with bar tall had a nearby jack-in-the-box allegedly. bar tall suffered a severe head injury from that attack. police right now looking for a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in oakland. the attack happening while the woman was walking on 91st avenue in east oakland on sunday. the woman says the man approached her and physically forced her against a vehicle and sexually assaulted her. she says she was able to run away and finally get some help.

police now offering a $2500 reward for information leading the an arrest. they are working on a suspect sketch. it is 6:06 right now. a cheerleading coach at a san jose high school faces child molestation charges. 23-year-old anthony loza remains in the santa clara county jail. he's a cheer coach at andrew hill high school and also at san jose's energy athletics practice gym. prosecutors claim the alleged abuse occurred during a three-month period. he's being held on half a million dollars bail. police are asking for any other possible victims of loza to call silicon valley crime stoppers. bundle up before you go outside. more cold weather on the way today. some parts of the bay area, it was freezing overnight. homeless shelters right now preparing for this. this day in the bay's damian trujillo live with more on this story. good morning, damian. >> reporter: good morning, jon.

envision is providing quite a respite for the homeless during this cold weather. they have 85 beds here at envision. so quite a bit of help for those who need a roof over their heads and a bed to sleep on which means only a few people hanging out at st. james park. that's over in downtown san jose, very popular with the homeless. we found just a few people sleeping on one of the park benches. it's popular with the homeless. now, the city of cher conducted its first over homeless census this year and found that almost 11,000 individuals experience homelessness every year in san jose. that's a 21% increase from only two years ago, and one-third of them are female. here is what's really disturbing, 126 of the homeless were children under 18. let me bring in lori collins the director of the shelter here. you kind of go into a different mode when the temperature goes

below a certain level. tell us about that? >> when it goes below freezing, about 32 degrees we go to cold weather in status where basically all of our multi-service centers, the ones like here in the background open up 24-7. we allow folks off the streets even if we're full and we pull out some cots and mattresses and let them come in on the floor, intoxicated or not. it doesn't matter to us. we want to get people out of the streets so no one dies. >> that's quite a possibility. we see all the time about how many people die in santa clara county every year. it's more than a dozen. >> yeah. we've lost several this year already. we keep a running list. it's very unfortunate, but it is part of the job. the guys are great out here. people are great. appreciate to have a place liken vision. we welcome them, especially tonight. we'll make the announcement, post some signs. folks can come in. we usually get four or five guys

welcome back everybody. b.a.r.t. in the process creating a task force to try to battle copper thieves. the transit agency says thieves delayed a project about ten months that was supposed to speed up trains in contra costa county. thieves stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars of metal. the team wants to team up with other agencies to fight the growing problem. california's high-speed rail project has seen plenty of criticism over the past few months. now even the people who supported it are jumping ship. a new public opinion poll shows 64% of registered voters want another public vote on the project. 59% now say they would reject a proposal if they could vote on it today. pry stag on the high-speed rail

we've got an area of low pressure that might bring us a little rainfall. that looks like sunday, monday, into tuesday, it sits to our east. we are watching for a cut-off low that could bring us showers. this system is not packing a lot of moisture. late week, more significant area of low pressure could bring more active weather wednesday, thursday into friday. enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. we'll check your drive with mike. we'll give you an update to the accident in the south bay. southbound 280 approaching 101, still no slowing, although that accident the blocking the slow lane for southbound 280, noncommute direction. this is the commute direction, westbound 230. reports of a blown-out tire. the r car spun out across the roadway on the right-hand shoulder. that was enough to trigger a slowdown. now it's slow from 880 towards first street towards sunnyvale and the rest of the silicon valley. looking at more slowing now as well for antioch. the typical slowing over towards

summers villevilville into pitt heading into concord in the next half hour or so. looking at livermore, a 20-minute drive into livermore. heading towards airway, speeds in the 50s. in the 60s heading toward the dublin enter change. a live look at the bay bridge. the cash lanes are building up. the fast track lanes still not backed up yet. it's 618. they should turning the metering lights on any minute. appears the south bay is poised to lead a new resurgence. despite a tough economy, reports show an upward trend on job growth in the heart of silicon valley. "today in the bay's" bob redell live with a look at the jobs report. >> good morning to you, jon. the u.s. bureau of labor statistics, actually shows the south bay job market is not leading just the bay area, but the country. basically talking about the area covering san jose, sunnyvale and

santa clara. statistics show job growth was 3.2% growth between the last two octobers, the fastest growth in the country, almost three times the national average. you can see houston is not too far behind. seattle is a little further behind and third place nationwide. economists are not calling this, though, a job boom. more of an upswing. another sign that perhaps the bay area son its way toward an economic recovery. the neck industry leading the charge. what makes this difference than the dot com boom and bust is instead of being led by the pet coms, the job growth is headed by apple, google, linkedin and facebook. in another report, the ucla anderson forecast predicts the bay area economy will be the fastest growing in the state of california over the next few years. one economist ex-peblgs the magic will spread throughout the eight other counties.

foreclosures and predator lending practice. carmela harris pulled out of the settlement talks with banks in ok. she says the settlement falls short and leaves too much immunity for bank executives. california and nevada are two of the states hit hardest by foreclosures. santa clara city council crunched the numbers for the first time last night t. council will have to sign off an on $850 million plan to help fund a stadium. stadium revenue will be used to pay off the loan, revenue the 49ers say is already pouring in. luxury suite sales have reached $200 million. there will be stadium builders license sales and money from naming rights and financing, of course, from the nfl. stanford school of business professor george foster says the financing is solid and the deal protects santa clara. >> the cost overruns on the

"today in the bay's" christie smith live in san francisco with the latest. good morning, christie. >> good morning, john. it got kind of tense out here overnight as san francisco police moved in, they pulled out a loud speaker and gave occupiers a five-minute warning they would have to go. some of them did. right now it's pretty much down to the cleanup. the encampment was dismantled and for hours now public works crews have been power washing justin herman plaza. fran police moved in about 1:00.

the police chief tells us about half the camp agreed to move out on their own. new numbers, 70 people arrested. there was a group that actually separated out onto market street and two people were arrested there for throwing chairs at police officers. one woman who tells us she's been camping here at the plaza for about a month, says she had trouble leaving and got arrested. >> i walked this way and there was a wall of police in riot gear. i said can i walk out and they said no. i stood there all my stuff. and there were other people saying they won't let us lead. they were starting to form in this corner. i stood there by myself, not causing any problems. waiting to leave. they wouldn't let me leave. then the cops came and they arrested me. >> reporter: now, the chief says that what happened is that talks between the city and the occupiers had broken down, that they actually hadn't heard from the occupiers in some time.

so the decision was made to go ahead and move in overnight. occupiers, the few that we've talked with that are still lingering here say they plan to meet up a little later today and talk about what their next move will be. some of them saying they were kind of upset with that five-minute warning. they thought it was too short and they want to get their belongings back. public works is separating trash from people's personal belongings and saying people can get them back later today. reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> appreciate the update. 6:33 right now. the parents of the 1-year-old boy shot in the head in oakland are expected to talk about his treatment this morning. hiram lawrence remains in critical condition at oakland children's hospital. the little boy was injured on november 29th when three men opened fire into a group in a parking lot. in the meantime, hiram's family apparently came face to face with a person of interest in the shooting. the "chronicle" reports the man

was at children's hospital and the baby's family saw him and attacked him. when police arrived, they arrested him on unrelated charges. a new warning many morning. investigators say this man pretends to be bank manager, calls victims by phone and meets them outside of their bank, and then tells the victim he's investigating employee theft and convinces them to go inside and withdraw thousands of dollars. if you recognize this man, you're asked to pleases call san francisco police. we talked about it all week, temperatures freezing in parts of the bay area this morning. homeless shelters are preparing to host an influx of people trying to get out of the cold. this do for the homeless. we went out this morning and shot some video to see what was going on. at 4:00 we spotted a handful of people sleeping at st. james park. the park is popular with the homeless. it seems many found another place to spend the cold night. the city of san jose conducted its first ever homeless census this year. it found almost 11,000 individuals experience homelessness every year in san jose. that's a 21% increase from only two years ago. and one-third of them are female. 127 of the homeless were children under 18. the director of the envision shelter here in san jose says they go into a different mode during freezing temperatures. when it goes below freezing, 32 degrees, yes go to cold weather in status where all of our multi-service centers, like what we have here in the background

open up 24-7. we aloe folks off the streets, even if we're full. >> also the bay area air quality management district has declared a spare-the-air day today. that means no wood burning today because smoke pollution would reach unhealthy levels. again, laura and jon, it never reached freezing temperatures here in san jose, but i'll tell you what, it's freezing. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." speaking of frezing outside, time to check with meteorologist christina loren. >> depending on your threshold for cold this morning, that's how much you'll have to bundle up. basically all across the board except for right by the water, san francisco and oakland in the 30s this morning. some cities actually reporting the 20s. i want to point out a couple differences here. between yesterday and today, you saw the clouds overhead. that's keeping things more mild. in addition to the cloud cover we have a little more of a

breeze. that tends to mix up the air so the cold, cold air can't settle right to the surface. overall about the same as yesterday. some cities reporting temperatures a touch warmer, give or take a couple degrees. 31 in santa rosa, 32 in napa, 32 at livermore and 27 degrees this morning in gilroy. you still have time to protect your sensitive vegetation and turn the sprinklers off. hazy sunshine in the forecast for today as we head throughout thursday. things will be a touch warmer. we'll see a little more wind. that will keep your lows two to four degrees warmer as we wake up at this time tomorrow morning. more of an onshore flow as we head through friday. getting tons of sunshine each and every afternoon all the way through the weekend. another chilly start caused by high pressure. driving the storm track way to our north. we call it a blocking range

presidential candidates have debated more than ten times. now some are refusing the take part in one moderated by donald trump. tracie potts is live in washington to tell us more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. top republicans in the party have been putting the pressure on, fearing that this could become a media circus. here is how it lines up so far. the front-runner by double digits newt gingrich says he'll be there. he met with trump just the other day. rick santorum says if newt gingrich is going, so am i. it looks like rick perry is going as well. but mitt romney who is run ag strong number two in this race says he's not going. he's called trump to let him know that as well as jon lunts man, ron paul, both of them say they won't be at this debate. right now all eyes are on iowa and the latest polls that show newt gingrich leading by double digits, 15 points according to the latest gallup poll. gingrich as a result is being

hazy sunshine later today. tomorrow morning, warmer with more cloud cover and wind. friday we'll get more of the fog that we're so accustomed to. that fog will keep your overnight lows more on the mild side. this morning, satellite imagery shows a big area clearing over the entire area. the sun comes up rapidly, we'll see all the cold air mix out. dry air mass makes for easy conditions when it comes to warming. cold, that's what the area of high pressure is doing at this time of day. as we head through the day later on, it's going to clear our skies and make for warm mild conditions. clear conditions prevail. but we will have that thin layer of haze. 60 in fremont, 62 in san jose and 62 in gilroy. want to show your futurecast. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, a little onshore flow effect especially in the north bay. that will keep you more mild.

down the encampment at justin herman plaza. >> reporter: right now it looks like a handful of demonstrators are still here talking where police. some of them have their helmets back on. they're not lettinging people back into justin herman plaza after police made a surprise move with a five-minute warning for demonstrators to leave at about 1:00 in the morning. police say about half the occupiers packed up and left on their own after that warning. police moved in arrested those who stayed. they're telling us a group broke off and there were some tense moments with police out here on market street overnight. someone threw a metal chair at two officers. fortunately they had their helmets on, some demonstrators saying they were roughed up as well. in all 70 people arrested. police said they decided to go ahead and make this move because talks had broken off between the city and demonstrators. in fact, they're saying they hadn't heard from them in quite

elect ross mick rim many says it would cut down on the repeat offenders. supervisor mark farrell called it a slap in the face to people looking for work. the tech accused of steeling co-kaine from the san francisco crime lab is due in court. deborah madden is expected to be arraigned this morning. she's accused of skimming cocaine from evidence locker rooms during a three-month period in 2009. the state tried to charge her with a crime but failed to gather enough evidence. she quit her job before supervisors began to suspect she was stealing drugs. barry bonds urging a federal judge to take it easy on him. instead of prison, the home run king asking for probation. the 47-year-old giants legend will be sentenced next week for his conviction earlier this year on one count of obstructing justice. in court papers filed just yesterday bonds arguing he should not go to prison because

he has no criminal past. bonds' conviction stems from his grand jury testimony in the balco steroid case. police are looking for a to being ton man who may have lived in an apartment with a corpse for months. police think the woman died four months ago. they're investigating her death as a possible homicide. one of the best places for finding a new job is right here in the bay area. new reports showing the south bay leads the country in job growth. "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us with details. does this mean we could see another job boom? >> not necessarily. economists aren't calling this a job boom, but more of an upswing. new numbers from the u.s. bureau of labor statistics show the south bay job market, basically the area covering san jose, sunnyvale and santa clara grew by 3.2% between the last two

octobers. that's the fastest growth in the country, almost three times the national average. you can see houston and seattle not too far behind. the tech industry is leading the charge in this burst of hiring. what makes this different than what we saw ten years ago, instead of being led by the dot coms of the early 2,000s, it's from heavies like apples, facebook and linkedin. forecasts say the bay area economy will continue to be the fastest growing over the next few years. one economist expects it to spread throughout the other eight counties in the bay area. we have yet to see much of that. the east bay has only seen growth of .1%. statewide unemployment is still at 11.7%. experts forecast that number will improve, dropping to the 10% range by 2013, not seeing single digit unemployment until
