those crews are clearing right now and slowing through the scenes. a typical pattern for your east bay commute as the day goes along. >> it is 6:01 now. and the effort to recall major quan is officially under way. supporters got the green light to sater up signatures to put it on the ballot for next year. good morning, christi. >> reporter: good morning to you. they have a couple of months to make that happen. the occupy encampment is gone. to mayor pout out a statement saying she's focused on jobs and public safety. the effort to remove quan is heating up. this group got the go ahead to

gather signatures. they need 20,000 signatures. they also launched a website. removejeanquan.com. they sha she doesn't done much to reduce crime and bring much-needed jobs to oakland. a second group is starting its own recall effort against her as well. she's saying the last thing oakland needs is a divisive and expensive recall election. >> christie, thank you very much. it is 6:02 now. several protesters say they used excessive force during the protests in october and november. opd say the video and audio recordings show the events as they happened, and it says it's

dedicated to releasing in a manner that is constitutional and ethical. >> san francisco mayor ed lee says occupy protesters can return but they can't pitch tents. about 200 returned last night and so did police. police immediately took them down voluntarily. some # 5 protests were arrested during a raid early yesterday. they were all cited and all released. san francisco says it has spent nearly a million dollars dealing with the occupy movement sitz it started. about 50,000 of that was damage to justin herman plaza where the main group was set up. it will continue to spend money as it patrols the area to keep them sfr setting up new camps. san francisco mayor is taking one last shot at keeping them from occupying san

francisco. lee is expected to meet with team owner jed york today. but he's not optimistic about the talks. he admits there's little hope of keeping the niners in town. santa clara announced it secured $850 million to finance the new stadium. the rest of the money for the billion-dollar project could come from the nfl and other city funds. the new stadium is slated to open in 2015. spoth supporters of same-sex marriage will rally in front of a courthouse ahead of a proposition 8 hearing taking place this afternoon. the federal appeals court set to hear two major motions. they are asking the court to slow out judge walker's ruling that struck down the same-sex marriage ban because he had not disclosed that he is gay. the court will hear arguments about whether video recordings should be made public. it's the world's biggest social networking site, an it's expected to have a big impact in the move to menlo park.

facebook could bring more than 6,000 workers to the new headquarters. but not everyone is liking the idea. bob redell is live in menlo park with an update. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. in all facebook would like to have close to 10,000 people working at the new headquarters at willow and bay front expressway and another location nearby. and that could be a problem. this is according to a new report just released by the city. facebook is capped at 3600 employees at the main campus. but the social network is asking the city for permission to remove the cap and allow extra workers. in exchange the social networking giant says it would somehow limit the number of trips to and from the main campus to 2600 during the commute hours. the report found that without the restrictions major commute

routes along marsh, willow, middle field, 101 and 84 which is the bridge would become heavily congested. you can learn more about it yourself. that's tonight at 7:00. jon and laura. >> efforts to bring bart to the south bay will come one step closer to reality. the board is expected to approve a $772 million contract today that will extend bart from fremont to san jose. $750 million less than previous cost estimates. efforts to bring bart to downtown san jose is still years away. >> time to check in with

christina loren for a look at the forecast. >> if you're catching bart this morning or taking kids to the bus stop where you have to stay outdoors, make sure you are bundled up. it is near freezing in most places. here's something we haven't seen all week long. that's keeping your temperatures more on the mild side in san francisco. we have the spare the air day. unhealthy air quality just about everywhere. temperatures are cold this morning. 32 in liver more. 29 degrees in fairfield and the coldest city is napa at 28 degrees. take a look at the difference between novato and napa. so 39 there versus 28. the same goes for san francisco. clear overhead making for very cold conditions. you know we've had some cold starts to get through. 7 degrees cooler than just 24 hours ago in oak town.

welcome back, everyone. a little foggy by the golden gate bridge this morning. another cool start to this day. 6:12 right now. >> well, the san francisco woman thinks somebody poisoned her pets right in her very own backyard. debbie lives in the inner sunset neighborhood on 15th avenue. she says her 11-month-old puppy dakota and her 1 1/2-year-old cat died within hours since getting sick on sunday. both were in the fenced in backyard before getting sick. tests found traces of methadone in both animals. >> an effort is under way to

preserve a san francisco landmark. they have filed paperwork to strictly limit commercial activity and private events. it would require the city to maintain the building and beautify the park. the group needs # nourkz signatures to get it on the ballot. 2011 is the worst year of weather disasters on record in the united states. each cost at least $1 billion in damages. the total losses are $52 billion. that's not even close to the most expensive year on record in 2005. hurricane katrina caused $145 billion in today's dollars. that's damage that it did. it also caused and killed more than 1800 people. this year's storm for the record is taking a total of about 600 lives. >> that's a lot, yeah. tough out there.

6:13 right now. cool start to the morning. once again. >> yeah, we had some fok out there. it was an extreme year, even for us. we had snow in san francisco. then we had to deal with the tsunami. so finally getting a stretch of fair weather. we hit that dry. we continue all the way through your weekend with some really nice conditions. you can see here on the golden gate bridge this morning, that's the biggest difference. what a difference a day makes here. you have the fog keeping your temperatures a little bit more mild. but really only moderating the temperatures right at the coast. inland cities are still below freezing. through the next couple of hours, i hate to say it, but we continue to drop off just before and right after sunrise. the coldest part of the day at sunrise is 7:10 this morning. we have unhealthy quality as a result of the stagnant air mass overhead. that's across the board. getting a breakthrough the region of the bay area. overall unhealthy air quality. if you have asthma, try to limit

your outdoor activity it really makes sense. that's when we get the worst air quality of the day. 32 in santa rosa. freezing in concord. 33 in livermore. but you're getting a break in san francisco and novato, court see of the low cloud cover. throughout the morning we are going to continue see a little bit more of the onshore push. so we should see the marine layer tread all the way inland. after that we'll see temperatures above the freezing mark. we stop the clock at 10:00 a.m. getting a nice clear bay area for the most part. a little bit of cloud cover hanging out over the east bay but clearing out nicely. the cold dome takes a hike to the east. as we head through the the weekend, that will make for mild, overnight conditions.

patchy a.m. fog possible. filtered sunshine and temperatures in the 60s. 62 in san jose. 60 in san francisco. 61 in santa cruz. so not beach weather. but if you want to sit on the water, you're going to get a nice clear sky later on as we head throughout the weekend. that perfect clear sky will be obstructed by foggy conditions. we're expecting more and more cloud cover. so saturday is your better day if your looking for sunshine to get outdpoors. then we'll tell you what that means. maybe, just maybe a little bit of rain in your city. >> oh, that sneaky low pressure. glad you're on the case. i'm watching a sneaky construction crew. the rest of their friends have cleared from northbound 880. but one crew remaining as they're making their way off the off ramp. so it's still closed for another few minutes. if you wait more than 10 you should be just fine using that exit through the area.

northbound sensors are not a problem through the south bay. now you're looking at a 19-minute drive. slow past the interchange and heading over to air way for westbound 580. clear by the time you get to the dublin interchange. park boulevard, the earlier accident has completely cleared off the shoulder, out of the roadway, and so has the slowing that we saw earlier. and the rest of the approach to the bay bridge are also looking good. as far as speeds go, getting a little more crowded. the bay bridge toll plaza is also getting more crowded as a result. still fast track is moving smoothly. we should see the metering lights turned on right now. we'll have an update in the next report. no problems for 101 and 280 out of the area. a nice drive as well. >> thank you very much. it's 6:17. the woman accused of helping her boyfriend cover up a hit and run that critically injured a bay area firefighter says she's not

guilty. prosecutors say she delayed the investigation and tried to order parts to fix a damaged suv. her boyfriend, ed war is accuse using the suv to run over the firefighter on thanksgiving day. they apparently got into a fight at a nearby jack in the box for the accident. looking to avoid layoffs san jose police union looking for more pay cuts. a 10% pay cut to help balance the city's budget. reports showing the city will save $25 million. the agreement must still be approved by all members of the san jose police union. voters in richmond could cast their votes on a law that will make them pay more for soda. the they have given the nod to dress the ballot measure that

would impose a penny per ounce tax on so da and other sugary drinks sold in the city. a recent health report found that 42% of richmond's children are expected to be obese. >> in an effort to steer kids away from sugary drinks, five san francisco schools providing schools with their own reusable water bottles. this is part of a pilot program to move the district to compliance with state and federal laws requiring school to offer children free water at launch time. they can. >> i like the old drinking fountain. >> 6:19 right now. coming up, a bay area man accused of bilking $65 million to pay off gambling debt heads to court. >> how about $1.2 billion? somebody says they don't know where the money went.

it is 6:22. a former executive in a u.s. district court to find out how much time he will serve for money laundering. prosecutors say he could spend a maximum sentence of six years behind bars. the lawyers are asking for three years. he was accused of taking $65 million in tick backs from vendors. in february pleaded guilty he was on house aarrest ever since. a plan to improve cellular phone coverage in palo alto getting static from neighbors. on toll of utility polls throughout the city. community leaders learn about the health risk. a meet willing be held to discuss the matter at 10:30 this morning.

weekend forecast. first, let's check your drive. >> i'm sorry, i have to deal the thunder, or at least the fog. chp issued an advisory for drivers across the bay bridge. you can see, look at the fog in the area, watch for that. you'll have to slower the speeds. the metering lights are on. >> getting pretty thick out there. also to oakland, the push is on this morning to recall major quan. after getting the green light some oakland residents have already started gathering some 20,000 signatures. he is live in oakland with the timetable to gather up the signatures. >> good morning to you. they have to get 20,000 signatures in 160 days. very soon you'll see them in front of oakland supermarkets and at parties trying to gather the signatures. the occupy oakland encampment is

gone. things are starting to get back to normal in oakland. for her part mayor quan is saying she's trying to focus on the the business at hand. and that is trying to create jobs and increase public safety here in oakland. but it was that handle iing of encampment ma upset many business owners here in oakland. she says she is trying to stick to what she needs to be doing. but those behind the recall says that she hasn't really done enough on any of the fronts here in oakland. may 14th is the deadline to submit all of those signatures to the city clerk here in oakland. reporting live in oakland, i'm christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> it is 6:31 now. the family of an oakland toddler right now fighting for his life after being shot in the head is making a public plea. the boy's mother says doctors at oakland's children's hospital want to run more tests to check for brain activity. but she and the family are

worried they will take her son off of life support if the tests prove negative. 1-year-old is currently in a medically induced coma after being shot along with six adults in a west oakland liquor store parking lot. police have detained several suspects, but at this point no arrests have been made. it's 6:32 now. with over 800 million users statewide, the social networking site is moving to a new campus and hiring more employees. but with more people comes more cars. more traffic. today in the bay's bob redell is live with a look at the number of dislags on facebook's big expansion. >> it could be if it turns out the way the city hopes it doesn't turn out. good morning, laura. right now 2,000 people work at facebook's new headquarters here in menlo park. eventually the company would like to have five times as many

7:00. jon, laura? >> at least they'll get people's input. >> one bay area city looking to become more energy efficient right now. it's looking for help from one of the world's biggest oil companies. chevron was hired by livermore to make the city more environmentally friendly. the company will give the know-how to city leaders and if the city leaders like it, chevron would be paid to make the upgrade. as part of the deal, chevron would install 30 led street lights made from a local company. reports show livermore spends more than $2 million in utility each and every year, most of it from natural gas and electrical bills. it's 6:34 now. alameda county could fine you up to $2,000 for dumping food scraps in the trash. they will discuss a plan to make recycling mandatory. the new mandate wouldn't reduce the tons of waste generated by

the 1.5 million residents, but it could divert up to 700,000 tons of recyclables that would end up in landfills. it is 6:34. it is very cold outside. meteorologist christina loren tells us, yes, we do have sunshine in the forecast. >> yes, we do. something we haven't had in the forecast in quite some time, though, fog. and visibility is down to a quarter of a mile this morning. that's for santa rosa and novato. as we head throughout the morning hours, we'll see a little bit more of the fog develop, especially right at the coast, and even your inland valleys will get a little bit of fog this morning. spare the air day, try to limit your outdoor activity. if you're someone who suffers from respiratory issues and asthma. a little bit of a change as we quick off the next workweek. you're at 32 and freezing in livermore this morning.

32, cold up there in santa rosa this morning. it's that fog that is keeping your temperatures mild like we've seen over the past few days. you're at 39 in novato. seven degrees warmer than we were at this time yesterday. so as we head throughout the next few hours we are expecting more fog. we stop the clock for you at the end of the broadcast. we'll see a good amount of cloud cover over the bay area. by 10:00 a.m. the cloud cover will break apart. we'll see the sunshine and temperatures on the warm side. 62 in san jose. 62 in gilroy. 60 in san francisco. we do have some changes ahead into your weekend. the cold buildup of high pressure finally takes a hike off to the east. that means a little bit more fog each and every morning. saturday and sunday. sunday more foggy than yesterday. we'll tell you what that means for the weekend numbers. first we want to get you out the door on a good note. we bring in mike inouye. >> the good note is no big sur prizes right anyway aside from

he's live from the scene now. what can you tell us? >> we do understand from sources that police have made about 14 arrests from here. this raid is just about winding down at this home. not sure what they're searching. you may recall on october 14th there was also a massive raid here in gilroy called operation garlic press. police arrested more than 100 people. the drugs and gangs and stolen cars. police bloelieve that was part the mexican drug operations around gilroy and the rest of the bay area. santa cruz included. so this is an extension of the raids, i'm told. there were several locations hit in gilroy. again, the raids are winding down now. 14 arrests at least. so far police are being mum. obviously because if they're at another home right now, they don't want to tip off any

suspects or potential suspects that might be there right now. but police say this is in conjunction with the bureau of narcotics enforce. . they bust down doors and seize pot and meth from all the drug dealers the bay area. that unit will be closing, or most of the unit will be closing. so this is one of the last operations by the bureau of narcotic enforcement. because the budget cuts. they're trying to work a deal out with governor jerry brown to see if they can keep the unit alive. 14 arrests at least so far in the city of gilroy. in an extension of operation garlic press. we're live in gilroy. i'm damien trujillo, back to you guys. >> sounds like a strong finish to the department.

thank you very much. we'll continue to follow this morning and have more on the 11:00 news as well. it is 6:45 now. meteorologist christina loren is back. it sounds like the key words are frost and fog. >> yeah, you know. one of those days where you'll get hit but both. if you're inland it's going to this be the frost. if you're waking up by the water this morning, especially by the coast, we have quite a bit of fog developing. visibility dropping off significantly. san jose, good luck to the sharks. gilroy for instance, we have the 20s up until just about an hour ago. your temperature finally came up to 32 degrees. take a look at this. in santa rosa and novato where visibility is reduced. you're down to a quarter mile.

it's keeping your temperatures more on the mild side. serving as a blanket trapping in the warmth. 39 degrees in novato. you're at 34 in stran. where it's completely clear in oakland, just a hike over the bay bridge, almost a 10-degree drop off in temperatures. 36 in oakland. that's the coldest you've been all week long if oakland. make sure you're ready for that. you want to dress in layers, though. as we head through the afternoon, we'll see mild conditions and abundant sunshine, hazy sunshine, we do have a spare the air day. all day long. it is illegal to burn that firewood. and we have unhealthy air quality in a few more counties than we did at this time yesterday. moderate air quality in the south bay. otherwise if you're someone who suffers from asthma or respiratory. 60 in fremont. 62 in san ho. san jose. we do have changes on the way in the weekend.

the big cold dome of high pressure is finally moving to the east just a little bit. that will enable more of an onshore push. that will enable more cloud cover in the bay area. hence, mild numbers like we're already seeing in novato and santa rosa. seven-day outlook shows you staying nice. we continue our stride. we hit the stride of fair weather. as we head through monday and tuesday. a little area of low pressure will try to make its way into the bay area. maybe, just maybe a few light showers in the north bay. overall, greater bay area is staying dry all the way through the next seven to nine days. if you're heading out the front door right now, before you do so, wait one moment. mike inouye tells you what could slow you down. >> the slower weather -- cold weather viewers will be slower. we're looking over here. it's slowing down because of the volume of traffic. we have warm-blooded viewers. we still have the concern. because we have slowing for highway 101. and over the last few minutes i've been seeing 50s showing up

asked to think smaller when it comes to parking on the campus bob redell joins us live with why some people aren't liking his facebook plans. >> good morning. facebook would like to have close to 10,000 people working at the new campus here and another location nearby. if that does happen it could cause a problem for people trying to get through here. this according to a report just released by the city. right now facebook is asking for permission to have that many people allowed on the campus. right now it's capped another 3,600 people. in exchange, facebook said it would limit the number of vehicle trips to and from the main campus to 2600 during the commute hours. it would also encourage employees to car pool and use shuttles. the report found that without that caveat, the major commute routes here locally, marsh,
