thanks for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist, rob mayeda. we got to see a lunar eclipse. >> yes, we did. >> we had some good viewing around the peak of the lunar eclipse that happened around 6:05. the moon passed into the earth's shadow. it took on a little bit of an orange that looked like that. that was at 6:05. we had it here on nbc bay area. the unfortunate thing, it is approaching the horizon. it is getting lost in some haze and high clouds off to the west. you are noticing if you are venturing outside. most of the bay area, 20s and 30s in the north bay. time to warm up. mostly 50s to low 60s. for highs today. a cold start to the morning. more high clouds coming in for the afternoon. cool day today. today is the dry day. tomorrow, rain. it has been a while since we have been talking about a chance of showers. we do need to see some rain. i will let you know how much

"today in the bay's" gene el wi lie has the story. >> reporter: mechanics are working late keeping the trucks rolling. objecting po occupy is planning to shut it down for the second time in two months. >> we may clothse. >> reporter: they say they are fighting for economic relief for the 99%. carlos florez says not working monday will hurt. >> in a way, they are forcing us to lose money.

they are standing us for us supposedly but they are forcing us to stop. >> reporter: objecting pooi scc the port in november. they are now promising to shut down every port on the west coast. >> our power is built through expanding our movement from solidarity and collective struggle. >> reporter: the plan is not supported by the international long shore and warehouse union. in november, oakland police kept their distance when protesters took over the streets. this time, police plan to keep the oakland port operational. >> obviously, the port has an interest of maintaining peace and also enjoying our free commerce in that area. our job is going to be trying to facilitate that as much as we can. >> reporter: chief howard jordan won't say what his plan is but officer's days off on the 12th are canceled. truck driver emmitt carlos says he was stuck in the shutdown for hours. >> continuing on that, the

shout-in. >> reporter: he plans to take the day off to avoid the chaos. a decision that will cost him about $700. >> reporter: the city of oakland says it is expecting action from "occupy" as early as 5:30, monday morning. san leandro police have a mother to thank for the arrest of the fourth suspect for a shooting in a walmart parking lot. 18-year-old gran foreman was turned in by his mother. foreman and three polices accomplices are expected of robbing before 2:00 in the morning on november 25th. he was shot in the neck but can't work because of his injuries. two suspects are charged with attempted murder, robbery and attempted robbery. foreman faces similar charges. a clayton middle school teacher is under arrest after confessing to a relationship

with a former student. walnut street police say that 41-year-old andrew cattrall confessed to 17 counts involving a female student under the age of 16. police say the incidents happened some time ago and that the victim is not a student now. cottrell is in the contra costa jail with bail set at more than $900,000. if you are unlicky enough to have your credit card information skinned at a lucky grocery store, they are trying to contact you. they have almost finished notifying financial institutions about specific accounts that were compromised at self-check-out lanes at hundreds stores in november. they are also trying to get in touch with customers. people who used a credit or debit card at a lucky self-check-out lane over thanksgiving week can call a toll free number. you should also contact your own bank and keep an eye on your statement. if you find something fishy in your account, you should file a

police report immediately. all of this information is posted on our website, by the way, nbc bay area.com. more than 300 ipads gone in 60 seconds. the investigators are trying to track down the thieves that seemed to know exactly what they were doing. george kiriyama has a surveillance video. >> reporter: gone in 60 seconds. all of it caught on tape. >> within a minute, they were in and out of that store. >> reporter: nearly 300 ipads worth more than $100,000 stolen from the san carlos best buy store. >> very well-conceived plan and executed well. >> reporter: this clearly shows how the duo pulled off the apple heist. this he got into the store by using a floor jack to open the security roll-up door. they easily pried open the front glass door. once inside, they made a beeline to a locked steel rack that contained the 300 or so ipads. >> this container in the store

that had the ipads in it had wheels on it. you could move it from area to area within the store. >> reporter: the suspects wheeled out the steel rack through a fire exit door and loaded the ipads into a car and took off. investigators say it was pretty obvious the thieves were going for just ied pas. >> i don't think you could go into your home, go get something and come out in a minute. more than likely, you are going to be looking around, where did you put that? they knew exactly where to go. >> reporter: george kiriyama, td in the bay. amazing. a teenager in the south bay had a lot more on his mind than ipads. he used a pick action to break into the apple store in los gatos. that ply good board is replacing the glass window. los gatos police say an officer who was driving two prisoners to jail noticed that broken glass and the ax. police surrounded the store and

caught the 15-year-old before he could run away. they found a large duffle bag filled with apple products. thieves have set their sights on cat lit ti catalytic converters because of the metals inside. they were stolen since the end of november. police got six reports in a single day. apparently, the converters are not very hard to steal. thieves can cut them and unbolt them and sell them to dealers. the crooks can make anywhere from $20 to $200. the owners have to spend between $800 to $3,000 to replace them. facebook may have to foot the bill for traffic improvements to set up shop in menlo park. traffic delays on the bay front expressway near that campus would be significant and unavoidable if the company is allowed to bring 6600 new

employees to the site. they say they have plans to improve traffic but it needs approval from caltrans before they can start. they say they will pay the cost to the city of menlo park if they do not go along with it. music in the park with il not get another curtain call. after 23 years, the city pulled the plug on the popular series. it will focus its limited resources on new events aimed at attracting more visitors to the city. the summer concert series began in 1989 and offered 2014 free shows during its run. money was not the only consideration. increased violence during some of those concerts, also a part of the decision. still ahead on "today in the bay," snail mail is about to get more sluggish. the post office's latest move to cut costs. virginia tech students pay campusn orki campus on the same campus that endured a

good morning. looking live at san jose where music in the park is gone. you can still enjoy christmas in the park. virginia tech is healing from another tragedy this morning. the murder of a campus police officer. hundreds of students attended a memorial service in honor of derict crouse who was shot and killed by a man on campus. that gunman killed himself. students remembered the officer as a caring man. those who knew him personally say he was a great friend. last night's vigil was held at the april 16th memorial, the same site that commemorates the lives of 32 people killed on campus in 2007. europe's financial wows kept

wall street investors on their toes. >> a lot of progress was aimed at mapling the debt crisis from getting worse. every european nation agreed to consider a new treaty that gives a central oversight over each budget. jon corzine apologized for driving mf global into bankruptcy with bad betts on european debt. he said he has no idea where the $1.2 billion in missing client money could be but he hopes it will all be recovered. some say it is a sign of greater consumer confidence. americans borrowed $7.3 million more. if you think snail mail is slow now, wait until next year. the u.s. postal service plans to save $3 billion by closing half of the mail processing centers nationwide. 252 in all. i'm sue herera. get all of your business news on

good morning. looking live at the golden gate bridge. traffic moving smoothly. salmon and wine is a pairing that goes beyond the dinner table in wine country. napa county vendors are sacrificing thousands of dollars to give steelhead and chinook salmon a place to spawn. the silt from the steeply erodes banks buried the gravel where they lay the eggs. it is part of the reason where the salmon population has dropped from thousands to just a few hundred.

wineries along the stretch of the rutherford reach have donated easements of phase one for a project to save the river and fish. take a look at the video from hawaii where lava is spewing from the volcano kilauea. lava is now moving through abandoned subdivision and burning everything in its path as it crawls towards the water. it has been erupting continuously since 1983. if you were up early enough this morning, you probably were able to see the total lunar eclipse in the sky. this is video of the eclipse this morning. the moon passed through the southern part of the earth's shadow early this morning starting just before 5:00 and lasting until about 7:00. if you missed it, you will have to wait a while before the next one. the next full law nar eclipse is expected to happen in the spring of 2014. rob mayeda in away from the windows and doors, it was very

easy to see. it was so clear. >> this is what makes it fun to be here and see it on big screens instead of being outside where it was in the 20s and 30s outside. very cold. it was fascinating to see the moon as it went through the earth's shadow. this is what happened. about five minutes ago, the moon has set. the max viewing time was right around 6:05 around the bay area. this was as the moon went into the earth's shadow. the copper color was the light scattered to the earth's atmosphere. specifically, stratosphere. it tends to be a pretty dark-looking lunar eclipse. we did have a nice shade of red at 6:05. it looked just like that courtesy of jh chem to bring you the gorgeous picfres at the loo you nar eclipse. speaking of the temperatures, still 20s and 30s around the north bay. 27, pnevada, 29. san jose, 38. sunnyville, 35. not much wind. if you are watching us in marin county or up in the north bay

at a potential deal in san francisco. today they have the latest on where the warriors, the raiders and the a's could call home. >> if you take away our heart and soul, the a's and raiders, all we have bragging rights about, what do we have left with? >> reporter: managers at the restaurant are worried about a possible sports swap taking place here in the bay area. >> we want to save & keep all three teams. >> reporter: major jean quan knows how important it is to keep the a's here in oakland. the oakland a's have considered a possible move to the south bay for a while. raiders want a new stadium. san francisco mayor, ed lee is courting the warriors to move across the bay bridge. the president says he loves oakland but the team is keeping all options open. >> we expressed to her that the warriors are a bay area team. we are just at the beginning of this. we are open to talks to any

feasible solution for a long-term new arena for the warriors. >> losing all three sports teams would be disastrous for oakland. precious seasonal jobs would disappear along with millions of dollars. >> in talking to the raiders and the warriors and that we are working as hard as we can to make sure that oakland remains the home of major sports entities. >> reporter: council president, larry read knows oakland is a hard sell but in the end, he thinks all three teams will stay put. >> no different than chicago, los angeles or new york. it didn't stop those people that believed in a vision, those sports franchises and build upon it. oakland is in that same position. >> reporter: larry reed says he will be meeting with the oakland president on monday. cheryl herd, "today in the bay."

morning. very chilly start to the day. tomorrow, could be chilly and wet too, maybe. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist, rob mayeda. finally, a change in the weather we needed. we could see a little bit of showers. this morning, clear skies, which was nice to see the lunar eclipse right around 6:05 this morning. kind of a rust-colored moon until some of the haze and high clouds made things a little bit gloomy. close to 7:00. perhaps your face was as red as that shot of the moon. it was cold, still cold. 20s and 30s across the north bay. 46 in fraesan francisco. notice as you get closer to the walk. san jose, 39. notice we will see high clouds at times today. tomorrow, chance of showers coming back in. it is going to take some time to warm up. low to mid-50s around lunchtime. 4:00, upper 50s to near 60 today. tomorrow, month are clouds and highs probably in some spots. only in the low 50s tomorrow.

a chance of showers. we will talk more about the timing of when we think the raindrops will arrive in the full forecast coming up in a few minutes. a shootout on a hollywood street looked like something out of the movies but was much more terrifying because it was real. police are still not releasing the name of the gunman who opened fire, though nbc's beverly white did get more details. >> reporter: walking and shooting into traffic. amateur video shows a man with a semi-automatic pistol near sunset and vine who took everyone by surprise at around 10:15 a.m. >> i saw him coming up the street with the gun in his hand. i thought, he just held up the store or one of our local businesses. >> starts blasting, shooting everywhere, bam, bam, bam. >> randomly running and shooting at vehicles. it was very concerning for something like this to p ha in the community here where people walking around feeling like they are safe. >> reporter: police say the gunman, a 26-year-old white man, aimed at peds and vehicles and

struck a few. the only man hit by his gunfire was driving this silver mercedes. >> this guy walked right up to him, three shots in the driver's side of the right windshield. we could see his silhouette slump to the right. >> reporter: the lapd says it was overwhelmed with radio and 911 calls. >> the officers ordered him to drop his weapon. he refused to. one officer shot a number of shots at the suspect striking him. at that point, the officers converged on him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: two other male drivers were slightly injured but the grazed wound to the leg and the face. ten hours after it began, the coroner took the gunman away. >> i was like, is this real? is this real? >> that was beverly white reporting from l.a. police are still withholding the shooters identity until they can notify his family. a tragic end to save a

toddlers life. the oakland family is grieving the death of their babe bip after making a heart-breaking decision to take him off life support 11 days after he was hit by a stray bullet. ♪ >> dozens of clergy, police, lawmakers and community members marched in support of hiram lawrence. they protested the violence. they say too many young children have died because of gun violence. they say the city's culture has to change. >> unless the police and the mayor's office and the chief of probation join with the community, nothing will change in oakland. >> hiram lawrence was in his father's arms when gunmen fired into a crowd outside a liquor store on november 28th. he was hit in hess head. both hiram and his father were

injured. >> was she kidnapped or was she faking it? an amber alert is over for a teenage mother. police found 17-year-old christina alonza at a home yesterday two days after she disappeared. her disappearance sparked a statewide amber alert and effort. her familiar lay says she left a voice message saying she was being held by several men in a basement with two other girls and she didn't know where she was but the city police say it appears no crime was ever committed and they have made no arrests. investigators say there is a possibility that alonza could be held responsible for the cost of the search. sheriff's deputies in san mateo county are trying to figure out how thieves broke into a best buy store and stole nearly hundreds of ipads. they were stolen from the best buy in san carlos. surveillance video clearly shows

protesters sparked outrage from police and university officials. they are bringing in a new york based firm to examine the police tactics. no word on how much it will cost but a university spokeswoman tells our sister station, kcra, that the probe is pektsexpected last a 30 business days. the city will rededicate the carnegie library as the chinatown/him mark lai branch library. him mark lai was a chinese historian that taught one of the first classes at san francisco university despite having no formal academic history. community activists move to rename it after his death in 2009. bay area fans of military history are getting a chance to visit a famous battleship. the "uss iowa" is in richmond where it is undergoing restoration.

joe rosato jr. shows us the public and rare peak on board. ♪ >> reporter: it is one thing to read about military history in books and another to see it from afar. there is nothing like the experience of tactually walking its plaengs. >> it has a soul of its own. you get to see it every day. >> reporter: the docs of richmond have become the tem pore many rather home to the historic battleship, "uss iowa." >> the deckhouse is corroding down to the main deck. >> reporter: after more than two decades in the sassoon moth ball fleet, it is undergoing restoration before heading to los angeles to become a floating museum. there is plenty of work before the ship's final trek. 60,000 square feet of wood deck need replacing. acres of steel to paint. decades of neglect to reverse. >> we are breathing some light back into it. we intend to operate some of the systems and make it a living memorial not just a silent

museum. >> reporter: for members of the pacific battleship center, the work is a labor of love. >> we have this gigantic passion for this ship and think it is really important that she be saved. >> reporter: the iowa was christened in 1943 and fought in world war ii. it has the scar from a japanese shell to prove it. >> think about the number of people that have come through here and the number of stories and the kids lives. >> since the ship's arrival five weeks ago, it has inspired plenty of phases pressed against the gates looking in. now, those gates will swing open. >> the first time the general public as been able to go on board the battleship iowa in 21 years. >> the ship's saviors plan to open it up to public tours starting this weekend. much of it is still off limit but visitors will get to walk

good saturday morning. 7:45. a live view of point bonita off in the distance. some of the waves crashing over the rocks. nice, gorgeous start to the morning. earlier, you had a nice view. the lunar eclipse at 6:05. the maximum color we saw. a little rust color to the moon. now that the moon has set at 7:15, hopefully, we will continue to get pictures from those of you able to wake up extra early and see it. if you did go outside and see it, you paid a little bit of the price in terms of temperatures. we are in the 20s and 30s outside. look at the north bay numbers. 21, fairfield, 33, livermore. 38, san jose. a bit warmer as you get closer to the water. san francisco, 46 degrees. now that the sun is up, even as the high clouds, should start to see temperatures rebound. later today, expect to see the sea breeze pick up. that will push low clouds ang. o

visibility down to a quarter to half mile near novato. weather headlines, cold start to the morning. highs, mostly 50s and low 60s. tomorrow, increasing clouds on top top of some pretty chilly air. highs tomorrow in the low to mid-50s for most of the bay area. satellite view, quick shot of the radar. nothing showing up right now. what's happening here, a little bit further off the coast. that system you see spinning across the eastern pacific diving down towards southern california. that's a system we are going to have to watch. notice with the clouds we see, low clouds pushed on to the coast. pum upp pumped inland by a stronger sea breeze. notice where all the green hangs out here as we go through the day tomorrow. mostly south of san francisco. the main low is going to cross the central coast. we are kind of getting this moisture wrapping around counter clockwise over the bay area tomorrow evening into early

monday. gradual clearing. highest day around the bay area. i know it is cold outside. we are going to get 50s to low 60s. filtered sunshine. mixed bag and high-level clouds moving in from the south. upper 50s around san francisco and to the north bay. we should see the numbers close to 60. tomorrow, i'm betting north and east bay valleys, you could see highs in the low 50s, because the clouds are going to spill in on top of chilly temperatures tonight. showers, off and on. monday, things will dry out in time for the monday commute. at least we had clear skies at times to see the lunar eclipse. >> it was very cool. we won't complain about the rain returning. we need more. much more ahead. still to come, a silicon valley company throws a different kind of christmas party. we will show you why they are getting down and dirty. first, here is mike inouye with our community calendar.

lots going on today in the bay. i'm the traffic guy. i am used to reporting this sort of thing from the chp. today, instead of giving tickets, they are collecting toys, from 10:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon, their program, chips for kids, is hosting a stuff the patrol car event today in san bruno. chp officers from around the bay area will also be on hand to give child passengers safety inspections when you drop by. get those car seats checked, please. then, you can stuff the patrol car there in san bruno. if you want an even bigger challenge, talk to the marine corps. in conjunction with their annual toys for tots campaign, they have teamed up with the valley vta. bring an unwrapped gift to christmas in the park and load it on to the vta hybrid bus by the fairmont hotel. remember, you can take the bus or the light rail to this south

looking live once again in san francisco. a little bit of blue sky. enjoy it. tomorrow, we could see some rain, scattered showers, rob says. this is the time of year when many tech companies have christmas parties. despite big success, one tech company is avoiding the party scene for a good cause. nbc bay area business and tech reporter, scott budman, has story.

>> reporter: it didn't have to be this way. tamara richards could have been dressed up and sipping champagne. instead, her company, silicon valley based inindividual ya canceled its christmas party and worked on a farm. >> i think it is important to do what we are doing right now. it is good for the community. a lot better than spending the money on us. we already have a job. >> reporter: 1500 invidia employees came here to full circle farms, building, digging, painting murals and planting the future. >> today, we are just playing the foundation. we are going to go up ten stories. >> reporter: all to help local students and families get fresh produce. >> instead of our christmas party, let's take the financial resources and go do something great for the community.
