will learn his fate. u.s. district judge susan ilson will sentence bonds for obstruction of justice before a grand jury the fraul probation department is recommending a sentence of probation and house arrest. given this is his only conviction and what he has done for the community. they sent other people who have lied and giving them house arrest. so that is his best bet for house arrest. she's already established the precedent. >> now, our legal analyst steven clark does see one possible wild

deputies say he's on the run after binding, gagging and raping a woman. they nearly captured him wednesday night. a toddler killed by a stray bullet will be remembered today. the boy was in his father's arms when gunmen began shooting at the crowd last month. this is on 66th avenue. it will be held at 11:00 this morning. and later tonight, organizer sas too many young children like hiram and carlos have died because of gun violence in oakland. 3-year-old carlos was hit by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting back in august. that's at the corner of seventh

street and willow. this is 6::06. salvation army is planning to distribute boxes of fruit and personal care items to thousands of families in the bay area. christie smith joins us live in oakland where the salvation army says while a loot more people are needing help, donations are once again down. stuffing, yams and all sorts of vegetables. they have to fill 1600 holiday food boxes. get them out the dpoor, distributed on tuesday. they're about three-quarters of the way there. they still have a little ways to g. what the salvation army is doing is asking for donations basically today. good morning. can you tell us what kinds of things you need?

>> we're looking for nonperishable things. we need canned green beans and corn and beans and lots of fruits and vegetables is what we're in the greatest need for. >> and you'll have folks in here try to get the boxes filled up. what sorts of families or maybe people you haven't seen before are coming in now? >> as we watch people come in and apply, a lot of them are people that are just maybe recently laid off or out of a job these are people out of their luck and need help through the holidays. >> so where can people go? >> stop by any of your local salvations army in the entire bay area. any salvation army will be happy

the radar has turned dry. the weather system that brought us showers yesterday is parked over baja, skra. we will not see rain today. just sunny skies after a chilly start to the morning. by lunchtime mostly 50s. a bit breezy in the hills. some of that will mix closer to sea level. 4:00, temperatures close to 60 in san jose. upper 50s in san francisco. 65 with north winds in santa rosa this afternoon. if you like today, you'll love the next seven days. not much change. >> and this is really what i'm focused on. a lighter volume of traffic as well out of the north bay, into the east bay proper. we'll focus on interstate 80 just south of the bridge. wb, your commute direction reports of a deep depression across all lanes. there's a dpip in the read.

that was in complete u.s. withdrawal from iraq. all that remains of the u.s. military in iraq are nearly 4,000 soldiers. it looks like more space junk is about to crash to the earth. the russia space agency says a probe will fall to the earth next month. it got stuck in the earth orbit and never made it to the intended destination. several dozen pieces of the probe, that could weigh a total of 440 pounds are expected to fall. they'll calculate where they fall a few day fs before it happens. the good news, it's friday. the not so good news, it's cold. >> no satellite or rain drops in the skies in the bay area. but maybe temperature records. look at the numbers in the bay

high pressure is really anchored here on the west coast. storm tracks stays off to the north. and this is the seven-day forecast in terms of the rain through next week. today is a deday after the start. close to 60 in san jose. thanks the north winds. speaking of wind, if you're heading up to the lack tahoe area, gusty conditions and a dry weekend in the sierra. maybe some patchy follow could slow things down. the south bay, no reason beyond the slowing down to the speed limit. a few sensors showing the 70s.

one of the key figures in the penn state sex abuse scandal is on the witness stand in a pre-trial hearing. the hearing for former athletic director tim curley. they're accused of perjury during the testimony. the defense is cross examining former graduate assistant mike mcqueary this morning. he said they testified that he gave them a less drask account. >> they will fill the three gas lines to full pressure on monday. they are giving the go ahead so customers in san francisco and san mateo will have enough gas to heat their home. all lines should be at full

capacity by tuesday. the news comes as they get ready to face a judge in san francisco. today's hearing involves a number of lawsuits filed against pg&e in the wake of st huge explosion. days ago they admitted it is liable for the explosion, this means it will cover the expenses of victims' injuries. the civil trial is expected to start in july. >> 6:20. oakland children's hospital is taking heat for what it puts on the cafeteria menu. nine minutes until the open of theofofq the wall ststreet. we'll talk about it coming up.

new studies criticizing the food at childrens hospital. they examinened the food at 14 different children hospitals across california. the children's hospital in oakland was given the lowest score. only 7% of the entrees for health were healthy. he criticized them for positioning high calorie items near cash registers to encourage impulse buying. free parking, consider it an early holiday gift from the city of oakland. meters parking will be free this

look at what the judge is considering. >> good morning to you. we're talking about u.s. district judge susan will sentence barry bonds in the federal court hours building behind me here in san francisco for his obstruction of justice convicti conviction, something he did before a grand jury. the prosecution is asking for jail time. they would like to see him spend 15 months in jail. the federal probation department is recommending a seasons of probation and house arrest. barry bonds himself and the defense team are asking for probation without the house arrest part. our legal analyst thinks house arrest is more likely given that this is bonds' only conviction. given what he has done for the kpurnt and there's precedence. this judge didn't sentence two

others to jail time when they were convicted. he doesn't see her doing the same with bonds. however, there is the wild card. >> let's face it, greg anderson did over a year in jail by helping barry bonds apoint the case. is it fair that greg ander southern did so much time and he didn't participate at all. >> greg anderson, his personal trainer, spentd over a year in jail for refusing to testify against his friend. he was held in contempt of court. marla, laura. >> thank you very much, bob. >> developing news in the south bay. police are still on the scene of

an officer-involved shooting. police say an officer shot and killed a man in self defense overnight. we have a live look at the scene now. police say the officer shot the man after feeling threatened. plenty of crews are still on scene. officers won't say what the man was doing or even if he was armed at the time of the shooting. the incident is now under investigation by the department's homicide unit. we expect an update later this morning when we get the new information we will bring that tow you. the last occupy tent city can be move soon. they're fed up with violence, drugs and fillth at civic center park. they're putting campers on notice that more citations are on the way. police say at least 23 crimes were reported since october 23rd, including a massive fight

and allegations of domestic abuse. and also a suspected thief with a machete, a hammer and a bb gun. oakland is taking steps to crack down on future protests at the port. on tuesday city lawmakers will vote on new rules to keep protesters from shutting down business at the port. protesters have blocked access to the port twice in recent months. the most recent shutdown on monday cost the port $4 million in lost business. the ceo of zynga rang the opening bell on the nasdaq marketplace. it's the big day. >> it is the big day. they raised more than a billion dollars in their initial public offering, originally pricing the stock there at 10 bucks a share as mark rang the opening buzzer on the nasdaq remotely to get

democrats and republicans are close to an agreement to keep the federal government up and running. tracie potts is live in washington w a look at the billion dollar spending bill. good morning, tracie. >> marla, good morning.

they've protected your paycheck as well assuming these votes happened today as expected. lawmakers are meeting now to determine how they can rush this through before this midnight deadline. the bill that republicans agreed to by democratic leaders as well. and republicans gave up some restrictions they wanted on money and visits to cuba by people in this country. the bottom line the government funded through next september in the bill. payroll cuts, that extension will happen for two months. the temporary extension. they have to come back to it in february. also, unemployment benefits remaining at 99 weeks. a two-month extension on that. they won't see a 27% cut at the beginning of the year. all of that wrapped into this bill that we expect the house and the senate to pass later today. for the president's signature.

francisco at the federal courthouse there as a judge prepares to sentence barry bonds for an obstruction of justice conviction. bob, good morning. >> good morning, marla. we'll know the answer to the question in just over four hours. she will sentence him for obstruction of justice before a grand jury investigating illegal steroid use. the prosecution is asking for 15 months in jail. they're recommending much less. barry bonds himself is asking for probation our legal analyst thinks house arrest is most likely. because of what he's done, and also because of the precedence set by the judge. susan, in two previous cases involving athletes lying before

they leaked the news of the associated press. the official announcement is later today. school districts across california are going to put the brakes on a plan that eliminates state funding for school buses. on tuesday they announce sod-called trigger cuts will force the elimination of $238 for bussing beginning next month. that makes california the first state to completely eliminate funding for school buses. the largest school district has filed suit to block the cuts. other districts will have to use reserves. >> this morning a spike in kmant as tough economic times push a lot of people to charities. the request for help are up while donations have dropped. good morning, christi. >> good morning. happy friday. it's a tall order. 1600 families in the east bay signed up saying they would need

a holiday food box. you can see they have quite a ways to gochlt so they're asking for the public's help with food donations. they need it today because the boxes have to be delivered out the door on tuesday. so they're looked for vegetables, fruits, perishables, that sort of thing. they've raided the smaller east bay pantries to fill a short-term need for the holiday food boxes. they have dropoff locations for donations in oakland, newark or hayward. most locations will be open until at least 4:00 today that's what we have from here. reporting live in oakland, i'm

chris christie smith, back to you in san jose. a san francisco bell ringer isn't looking for donations, he's going for a world record. he has been ringing the bell since yesterday morning. he's one of 24 ringers around the country trying to break a world record for nonstop bell ringing. they started at 9:00 at macy's square and moved to wal-greens. the unofficial record to beat is 36 hours. we wish him luck. >> this morning a meeting will be held about a local jewish community center that is abruptly shutting the doors. administrators say financial trouble is forcing them to shut down the 30-year-old center in

walnut creek. they have more than 400 members and features a preschool and an adult day program. for seniors suffering from dementia. the center will lay off all the employees and put the property up for sale. for the first time a majority of americans say they should be voted out of office this year. 52% of those surveyed think the president should not get another term in office. 43% said he should be reelected. that's down 10% from a poll in may. obama's approval rating stays slashed at 39%. >> it's 6:55. today show coming up in a few minutes. here's matt lauer to show us what they're working on. the gop presidential field squares off in a final debate before the caucuses. some are saying it was a good night for mitt romney.
