good morning on this christmas day. i'm scott budman. the latest on deadly christmas attacks in nigeria. plus, the grinch who literally stole christmas in morgan hill and left one family member short. we'll take you around the world for unique christmas day celebrations. and if you're looking to get out of the house, we'll tell you what is opened and what is not. this is today in the bay. all right. we're going to take a live look, not outside but inside.

this is the salvation army in san francisco putting the finishing touch on hundreds and hundreds of meals for those less fortunate today. we'll be visiting these guys all morning long. good for them. the salvation army working in san francisco to help those who need a little boost on this christmas day. with that, we say merry christmas. i'm scott budman. now we will check out the forecast with rob mayeda. >> part of the reasons why we've had an overnight freeze warning around the bay area, it's spare the air day due to the particular matter pollution. by lunchtime, you'll see 40s and 50s. cooler temperatures again today. highs mainly in the 50s. closer to 60 in san jose. 58 around san francisco. coming up, we'll talk more about a chance of finally seeing some rain coming back to the forecast and perhaps even some sierra snow. a look at those changes coming

our lady of baghdad and there were hostages and hundreds injured during the attack. people packed one southern california mall looking for deals and bargains. many waited until saturday to wrap up their holiday shopping. businesses usually shut down during christmas, but there are some shops opened during the holiday. here are several businesses which will be opened today, whether you're looking for something to eat, to be entertained, or pick up the last ingredients for christmas dinner. most of the dine-in restaurants, like i hop and denny's will be busy today. 7-eleven will also be opened. if you're looking to catch the latest blockbuster movie theaters, they will be operating all day, just be prepared for

long lines. a morgan hills family is suffering their own nightmare. they came home on thursday to find their presents gone including scrapbooks and personal photographs. the thieves may have stole their pet dog, a chihuahua mix named sharky. the family has a message for the thieves. >> bring the dog back, please. it's my daughter's dog. i won't say nothing. i won't say a word. you know, just bring the dog back. it's my daughter's, you know, and he's part of the family. the santa clara sheriff's department is still looking for suspects. they live in a rural area and there is one way in, one way out. they think the thieves may have been looking to see when they left on thursday. coming up -- >> i feel like i gave her a second chance at life and she

merry christmas, everyone. you're look at sun rise over san jose. if you are heading out today, we're going to get you the weather forecast. here is rob mayeda with the weather. >> good morning. just like yesterday, we will follow the freeze warning that is up through 9:00 for the inland valleys. another spare the air day with a lot of winds and cold air inversions. this is why we've had so many so far in december without any rain or wind around and then things start to change. tuesday and wednesday, finally a chance of showers creeping back in. but christmas day looks pretty good. air quality, not so much. inland valleys and healthy for sensitive groups as we wrap up the weekend. one thing that we'll watch is the high clouds off to the west spilling over the bay area as we head towards the afternoon. they won't produce rain but will probably filter out the sun and lead to slight cooling. notice the pattern that we're seeing. high pressure is off to the west and the jet stream tries to

break through. that will introduce the chance of showers midweek and the jet stream stays right on the oregon-california border. any showers will likely move back up north and away from the bay area. high temperatures wrap up the weekend. warmest places from san jose southward to santa cruz. upper 50s around san francisco. 50s, close to 60 for oakland and upper 60s in and around the north bay. as we head back to the short work week, patchy fog and inland spots for monday. late tuesday, north bay, chance of rain and showers on wednesday. again, i think those rain showers head off to the north as we approach next weekend. that's a look at your weekend forecast. back to you. >> thank you, rob. volunteers in san francisco are sharing for those in need. hundreds of people are helping

the salvation army deliver prepared meals to senior and disabled veterans. they cooked up 5400 meals. many will go to seniors who live alone. for many, this is their only contact during christmas. you've heard about fruit cake. three buddies from florida from been sending them the same fruit came for years. the same fruit cake. shipped with magazines and other memorabilia from major events each year. the fruit cake is now with one of the friends who lives in colorado and says it's a fun way to keep in touch. santa has completed its flight around the world, delivering gifts and it was a record-setting christmas eve for him. the tracking volunteers at

peterson air force base in colorado tells us that 1 is 02 telephone phone calls on his progress. that marks the previous 80,000 calls. santa tracking volunteers worked out of norad. santa doing even better in social media these days. the salvation army is doing pretty well in dallas, texas. someone dropped a valuable gold coin into one of their red kettles. it's a south african coin worth $1600. the donor written, he gave the coin in honor of his mother and a lot of love. this christmas is more special for families across the country. they are welcoming home loved ones returning from war. nbc's kristen dahlgren has the

reach the coast of california looking for warmer weather. it remains a mystery to science. while there are mormon nanc, th population is down since the 1990s. >> we haven't seen the numbers that some of us were in awe of in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. but this year we are seeing a slight rebound and so it's time again for citizens to get out and welcome them back and see what sites are occupied. >> reporter: one of many scientists here in the bay area, throughout the entire state of california, where they are not only volunteering their time to monitor the conditions of monarch butterflies and keep track of them, but to also help their populations thrive. >> there's a cluster hanging from a branch.

>> reporter: volunteers citizen scientists, counting clusters on albany hill in the east bay. >> i've counted all of them. about 600. >> right there? >> yeah. >> reporter: last year when you were here, there were hardly any of them? >> there were 8 or 12. >> reporter: from 8 or 12 here last year, bill and george are now counting thousands on albany hill. the monarch population appears to have rebounded. no one is resting easily. >> it's been since '97 that there have been these kinds of numbers. >> reporter: a major way is under way at preserving winter locations like this one and by growing the old species that monarchs will lay their eggs on. george has planted native milk we'd to give the monarchs more

this morning. the pontiff prayed that aid would come to the world torn by bloodshed. he wants middle east peace talks to resume. he urges those to continue suffering from famine in africa. last night, the pope resided over christmas eve service. he talked about the commercialization of christmas and urged faith to look beyond the superficial glitter to discover its true meaning. to bethlehem where this morning christians celebrated mass at the church of the nate tift. the church is the birth place of jesus. there was midnight mass on christmas eve. halfway around the globe, troops

one carrier will even dress up as santa claus. this will be express and special holiday schedule with 40 trains operating between san francisco and san jose. there will also be one round trip scheduled to gilroy on new year's eve. people can hop aboard for free with the last train departing the following day just after 2:00 in the morning. in the peninsula, samtrans will saturday schedule. and in the south bay, vta will operate on a sunday holiday schedule through monday. then, next saturday, new year's eve, free rides are available beginning at 7:00 p.m. until 4:00 sunday morning. they will extend hours for light rail and bus service to the

fremont b.a.r.t. station. police, meanwhile, are investigating a deadly overnight shooting. this occurred near d street and 86th avenue. three suspects shot on a sidewalk into a passing car, wounding the driver. the driver was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. so far, there have been no arrests or a description of the suspect. anyone with information is asked to call the oakland police department. in southern california, a soldier may never walk again after being shot as his own home welcome home party. he was shot once in the neck, once in the rear. witnesses say sullivan, who earned a purple heart in afghanistan, was trying to break up an argument between his brother and another man. >> he's a very good boy. and he defended our country and he didn't deserve to come home

going to look at people doing very good things in the bay. volunteers in san francisco sharing the holidays with those in need. you're looking live now at hundreds of people helping the salvation army to deliver prepared meals to both seniors and disabled residents. the agency cooking up some 5400 meals. two-thirds of those meals go to seniors who live alone and for many, the contact with the volunteers is their only contact on this christmas. sculptors in eastern india are spending the day at the beach. they belt this 35-foot tall sand sculptor of santa. they worked 12 hours a day for three days. they were trying to make the biggest sculpttor.

others making a difference in time for a santa clara woman who had her motorized scooter stolen from outside of her home. george has more on this. >> reporter: christmas was delivered by this chrysler minivan. inside, a motorized wheelchair. >> it's like a miracle happened. and now i'm going to have a nice christmas. >> reporter: but for a while, it looked pretty depressing. a thief stole her $4,000 wheelchair outside of her apparent. her ability to move around and freedom has been taken away. >> i'm so sorry what happened. >> reporter: tracy and her husband were so moved, they wanted to make a difference and help someone in need. >> i immediately realized that we had an extra wheelchair in

our garage. when jim got his wheelchair a few years ago, we kept the other one and so i immediately approached jim and said i think we found a home for the wheelchair. >> jim can relate. after suffering a stroke, his wheelchair became his life. >> without this chair, i'd be stuck nowhere and so i can definitely understand how she felt losing the chair and glad to see that she's happy now. >> reporter: happy because the new chair feels just right. >> it feels great. the pain is my back is is gone right away. so it's just -- it's just great. i got my freedom back now. >> reporter: the spirit of christmas alive and well on marianne drive. a holiday miracle come true. >> there are some good people out there. >> george, "today in the bay". let's turn do sports. the nba returns to action. current champion, dallas mavericks looking for a repeat.
