their gift cards they received for christmas. very good day after christmas to you. >> customers driving up as we speak. retailers are cautiously optimistic. they think they'll do better this year compared to last year. the big thing to look at as you mentioned today is the gift cards. waiting to be spent in the next few days. that adds up to a $5 million gift from shoppers to the retailers. in california, most gift cards come with nothing.

they decorated his room at the rehab center with a tree and ornaments made by sto with's children. this morning a toddler recovering from injuries after his mother dropped him from a second story window. inclear if she'll go to jail or be placed at the psychiatric hospit hospital. the 24-year-old locked herself and her son in a room on christmas day. she dropped the 22-month-old baby boy out the two-month-old window. cortez suffered broken bones when she decided to jump out of the window. also in san jose, a 69-year-old man in police custody after he fought through a taser shot and broke an officer's nose.

investigators say paul pierce resisted arrest when following a hit and run accident. the 6'2", 220 pound man allegedly attacked police and pmpbled an officer in the face after being tazed. he now faces multiple charges including felon battery on an officer. firefighters asmoke quickly filled the home. this happened last night. rescuers pulled three elderly residents from the burning home with who were trapped inside in wheelchairs. fire investigators say smoking products caused the blaze, but they're not sure what kind. the house did not burn down but the garage is a total loss. marla, another raging, fast moving fire. this one a five alarm fire that

raced through several buildings in san francisco caused $8 million in damage. it all started in an law school. by time firefighters arrived, high winds up to 40 miles an hour. three hours later, 27 residents in four different buildings were damaged. 4 dln 36. this morning santa cruz county deputies know why an elderly man decided to shoot his wife before turning the gun on hims. investigators believe a 90-year-old husband shot his 88-year-old wife before killing himself because both were in

many new state laws take effect on january 1st, including one that bans police officers from towing car of unlicensed drivers. the only offense is not having a license. 4:38. san francisco arts groups are scrambling to schedule performances to coincide with the upcoming america's cup sailing race. so a handful of theater and dance groups are raising money and rehearsing for shows in 203 that will coincide with the race. the america's cup is slated to start in august of 2012 and last through 2013. all right. well, it is 4:38. time to get another check on the the weather.

want to turn their backyards to a home made ice rink have a huge mess on their hands. the winter has been mild in contract and other neighboring states. the families figure it will get cold soon enough. they stretch 44 feet by 2 feet. they line it with plastic sheets trying to hold the ice in place. the families say it took about three days to fill the temporary rink with water with the garden hoses. if it doesn't get cold enough soon thousands of gallons of water will have been wasted. or they can brave the cold. >> you don't want to swim in that either. >> it depends how brave you really are. >> let's check the forecast it's chilly out here. >> no one did the polar plunge. that's a new year's tradition.
