people. christie smith is live in oakland with details on bart's vision for the future. christi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. it's been more than 54 years since bay area planners had the first vision for bart. now they are talking about what they can do to serve the people. can you talk about the ideas that you guys are looking at moving forward? >> bart metro is the name of the concept. it remains a viable, reliable service for people. >> what sorts of things? i was reading about expanding service, adding stations on existing lines. >> at least three key concepts.

capacity, being able to carry more people, not only on the trains, but in the station as well. more frequent service to the city and to key commute areas that are growing, like walnut creek. and then there's the coverage area. adding stations between existing stations and extensions within the district already. >> are there any specific areas that you're looking at. i assume the thought was people came from the suburbs and went into san francisco to work. >> the bay area has grown ex exponenti exponentially. this is a seven to eight month long process. we'll invite the public to be part of the process. your viewers and our writers will have a chance to make thaur voice known. we also have to look at reinvesting in what we already have. that's a big concern of ours.

>> thank you very much, jim, for being out here this morning. that's the latest from here. i'll send it back to you guys in san jose. this morning a toddler is recover from injuries after his mother dropped him from a second story window. so far it's unclear. san jose police say family members called 911 after 24-month-old -- actually 24-year-old lupita cortez locked her and her son in a room. when officers forced their way in, cortez dropped a 22-month-old boy out the window. the toddler was not seriously hurt, but cortez suffered broken bones when she decided to jump tout window as well. six people are lucky to be alive after fast moving fire ignited a home in the south bay christmas day.

smoke quickly filled the home on amira lane last night. rescuers pulled three elderly residents are from the burning home who were trapped inside in wheelchairs. investigators say smoking products caused the fire, but they're not sure what kind. the house did not burn down. the garage is a complete loss. >> high winds and low humidity helping fuel a five alarm fire in san francisco. $8 million in structural damage. the wood structure of the building also helped the flames burn very, very fast. thursd thursday's incident was the first five alarm blaze in six years. it started near an alley on golden gate avenue and pierce street. three people were injured.

it left three dozen children homeless. authorities know why an elderly man decided to turn the gun on himself. they believe he shot his 88-year-old wife before killing himself because both were in poor health. the wife was critically wounded but died yesterday. deputies found the elderly couple at their home last friday. >> this morning police are upping the award for information leading to the arrest of a bank robber who struck twice in three days. he wears dark framed glasses with purple tinted lenses, a black hat and coat. he's wanted for two robberies and a second at the wells far go branch on mountain boulevard december 16th. both times the man approached the teller and demanded money before he ran away on foot with the cash. the reward now stands at $2500.

well, it didn't get what you want? stores are packed with shoppers looking to spend their gift cards. damien, folks pouring in already? >> reporter: yeah, just a few people, marla. we're at the wal-mart store on story road. we're supposed to open at 5:00. the doors are still closed. this is a big day for retailers. this is the third busiest shopping day of the year. now if the shoppers come come for exchanges and refunds. shoppers will pull out stocking stuffers give retailers one last push for the new year. sales are expected to be up from last year. believe it or not, some shoppers

will never use those gift cards. about 5% of those cards actually go unused every year. and consumer advocates call that a gift worth billions of dollars from shoppers to the stores. in california, most gift cards do not have an expiration date. if the balance is less than $10, then the stores give you the balance back in cash. so stores are hoping if you didn't like the scarf you got yesterday that you'll drop by the store and exchange it and pick up something else along the way. not a big rush here. but a few folks are trickling in. i'm damien trujillo, today in the bay. you won't be alone too much longer. >> reporter: i wouldn't be here. i don't get it. >> we would all rather be asleep. i'm happy to be here.

season. big waves are crashing along the gulf of thailand today, leaving some tourists standed on an island off the mainland. those are reported to be as high as 13 feet in southern prove sinces along the gulf. in japan people are bracing for blizzards. 20 inches of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. the snow will continue to fall through tuesday. and sigh cone grant is battering northern australia with wind and rain. some beaches were closed and people were warned not to go in the water. cyclone is weakening to a category one storm as it moves over land. and closer to home, bad weather is forcing good old nick to hand out a couple ious. there's a backlog of 50,000

have to get to work like us. 8:00 a.m., cloud cover hovering the coast. i don't think the fog will hang around long. 58 in fremont. 68 in san jose. you'll hit 61 in places like gilroy. the south bay looks to be the warmest. it's not as frigid down in the south end of the bay area. this little area of low pressure. so what i think as we head through the next 48 hours we'll see increasing clouds. the second half tomorrow i think the system will run just to north and probably bring light showers to the north bay. we need the rain. we're looking for any sort of precipitation we can find. breezy to windy conditions, limited sunshine, and then we stop the clock at 1:00 p.m. wednesday on your future cast. we are going to stay high and

we round out the day with mid-50s. where we might get rain. which cities have the best chance. we'll take a look at 2012. back to you guys. thank you, christina. the time is 5:29. bart is looking to the future to see how it can change and improve service for the riders. christie smith is live in oakland with ideas they've come up with so far in the campaign. christi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. one of the original concepts for bart was that everyone got on, everyone had a seat. that isn't how it is now. bart is turning 40 years old. planners are looking on ha new vision for the future. now these ideas aren't written in stone, but they could include things like all night service, express trains, adding stations on existing lines where there's

a long gap between stations and adding extensions to livermore, ocean beach. it's called metro concept. >> the key concepts are capacity, being able to carry more people. service, being able to service people br better and coverage. being able to have stations we don't have now in places where we need them. >> bart is already ordering cars with three doors to make it quicker for people to get on and off the trains. one of the crickier concepts would be the all-night service because of the overnight maintenance issue. that's when bart does repair work. the study should last eight months, and the public will have a chance to give their input on what they would like to see happen. the cause for all this estimated to be in the billions of dollars. reporting live in oakland. i'm christie smith, john and marla, back to you.

>> hopefully an expensive gift that pays off. the family of injured giants fan bryan stow is expressing hope for the new year despite a minor setback. he had to have a feeding ub reinserted after doctors discovered a bladder infection. but the family says stow was eaching mashed potatoes and graef on christmas. the family decorated his room at a san jose rehabilitation center with a tree and ornaments made by his children. a 69-year-old man in police custody after he fought through a taser shot and broke an officer's nose. it happened before. he resisted arrest following a hit and run accident. when they tracked him. the 6'2", 220 pound man attacked police inspite of being shocked

by the taser. he's facing multiple charges. on new year's day california become store clerks will have to dhek i.d.s. it's an effort to crack down on a trend called robo tripping which happens when people take too much cough syrup. in high doses it causes intoxication, hallucination, seizures and lost of motor control similar to pcp and lsd. one in ten teenagers say they've used dxm to get high. ha long list of state laws take effect, include one that bans police officers from towing cars. if a driver's only offense is

not having a license. thousands of cars are towed each and every year under this scenario. san francisco arts group are scrambling to schedule performances to coincide with the america's cup sailing race. fans are expected to head downtown for plays, music and dance but the city has overlooked them, failing to fund the arts. so a handful of theater and dance groups are raising money and rehearsing for shows to coincide with the race. the america's cup starts next august. let the madness begin. shoppers will be going elbow to elbow at most bay area stores today, and with a growing number of them, they'll be looking to spend the gift cards. damien trujillo joins us live at a wal-mart in san jose with more on this story. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this wal-mart opened at 5:00 this morning, about a half hour ago. it's been steady as she goes so far. it hasn't been a huge rush, but there have been a few customers

trickling in and out of this wal-mart store. so maybe perhaps some good news for the managers here at this particular store. this, again, is called megamonday. it's the third busiest shopping day of the year. so wal-mart opened an hour early. consumers flocked to the mall ls and stores to return the gifts they didn't like for christmas. but stores hope you also pick up another product while you're at the store. today is also when gift cards should see a lot of use. in the end retailers are expecting quite a spike in sales compared to last year, but consumer advocates say the stores also make out on unused gift cards. they say consumers every year give stores nationwide $billion worth of unused cards. one shopper said his trip today had nothing to do with christmas. i'm not interested in the sales. too early.

right now, you know why there's nobody out there. it's because it's so cold out there. and why would you want to get out of your comfortable, comfortable bed watching us? just wait until about 7:30. that's the coldest point of the day. after that time the sun will be out and we warm up nicely. 36 in oakland. we stop the clock on the the future cast at noon. you're in the upper 40s at that point. we'll be at 53 degrees as you break for lunch in livermore. 51 in san jose. want to point something out on the map here. you see all the blue shading keeping temperatures cool. well, that's onshore flow. that's fog that we're expecting to develop and push on as we head through the next few hours. as a result, san francisco, you only hit 57 degrees today. you'll hit 60 in oakland. 60 in san jose. 61 degrees in santa cruz. nice, comfortable weather for sitting on the beach and watching waves. too cold to get in there. a nice day to watch the waves at the beach. we had better air quality than yesterday. that should improve as we get showers coming up.

have a huge mess on their hand. they created a 19 # 0 square foot puddle. the winter has been mild. they figured, why not? it's going to get cold soon, right? the problem is, the answer is no. way to warm out there to turn the water into ice. the families built wooden mold stretching 44 by 33 feet and lined it with plastic sheets to hold the ice in place. if it doesn't get cold soon, thousands of gallons of water will have this family swimming in buckets of chilly h20. >> something broke loose in the backyard. i feel bad for them. christina loren, what is going on with the forecast? >> well, we have frost out

there. we're getting conditions cold enough to freeze any moisture. give yourself time to hit the malls this morning. those are open. you might find frost on your windshield. typically you have a carport with the back end exposed to the air. even san jose, now we're one degree away from that freezing mark. we're going to continue to drop out through the next couple of hours. as we thead through the morning you notice more moisture. it's that additional moisture that will make for more frost this morning. we're also dropping off in visibility across the board. and i am expecting flight delays out of san francisco due to fog developing. we already saw on the golden gate bridge. we showed you the shot. we'll see cloud cover push back

out to sea. we'll check the flight delays for you throughout the morning. really comfortable second half of the day. by noon it's comfortable enough to take off the third layer. we have an area of low pressure that may or may not bring us rain showers. the area of low pressure moves closer on wednesday. it will pass to the tail end. it will bring showers to the north bay in areas north of the golden gate bridge. i don't think we'll see much in san jose. limited sunshine. we're not expecting much. we stop the future cast at 1:00 p.m. on wednesday. just a little bit of precipitation in the northern most portion of the north bay.

house fire. flames erupted early yesterday morning at this connecticut home owned by an advertising executive. she lost three daughters and her parents. she and a mail acquaintance escaped the flames. the cause of the fire is under investigation. homicide investigators remain at an apartment building trying to determine a motive behind a christmas day shooting that left seven people dead. it happened in the suburb of ft. worth. the shooter is among the dead. investigators say four women and three men between 18 and 60 were all found dead in the kitchen of an apartment. a 911 call was made but no one was on the line. two handguns were found at the the scene of the crime. the white house is condemning the senseless christmas terrorist attack in
