"today in the bay." good morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. the time is 6:00. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez. we have breaking news that we're following in san jose this morning bob redell is headed to the scene. we'll give you a live look as soon as he's up. good morning, marla. west capitol expressway. there's a major intersection. that's the area where bob is headed. report os a police standoff is

going on. the live report will bring us more details on what is going on the rest of the south bay is looking all right. we have weak fog drifting from time to time in the bay area. >> no drama in the south bay. dangerous fog developing in the peninsula through the north bay as well. then the fog starts to lift and break apart. it will break apart in the south bay first. inland cities can hit the 50s by noon. 52 degrees with a lot of fog over the city. and we have flight delays out of sfo. we need the rain.

right now we'll send it back to you with tp stories. firefighters still on the scene of a fire that damaged two homes in the berk leley hills. this happened on miller avenue last night. christie smith is live now with an update for us. some big homes. >> yeah, they're beautiful homes. and we spoke with one man who lives up here. he says it was really scary. two of them here. and firefighters still here making this didn't flair up at one point the power line fell on a power truck.

they watered down their homes. some of them got out i know the people in the house were watering down their properties. >> four firefighters were hurt. two suffered heat exhaustion. no word on a cause yet. investigators will be out here first thing in the morning. >> new this morning a south bay bus driver in the hospital after his bus slammed into a semi trailer earlier this morning. right now a tow truck is on

scene. but it's unclear how long it will take to clean up the scene. the driver of the bus is expected to recover as well. east bay police are looking for a driver who hit a ped while fleeing from officers. they tried to stop him at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. she took off in a white suv hitting a pedestrian during the flight. the suv was found abandoned in oakland this morning. oakland police. it happened at 45th and international boulevard. sfpd officers were in oakland looking for kidnapping and assault suspects. the suspect spotted police and rammed their car to get away. the officers were not hurt.

a san jose mother accused of tossing her toddler out a window is in court today. she'll face child abuse charges, not attempted murder. her mental state will make a difference. the boy did survive with just some bruises. two oakland men accused of armed robbery free after targeting older asian victims wearing gold jewelry as they shopped. darrell dove and matthew howard will face probation violations when they appear in court. they would identify potential victims shopping in busy stores and follow them home and rob them at gunpoint. they robbed 20 victims from oakland to free mont in august.

police are watching this morning. one man was arrestedmented they also complained to police, nobody was injured during the raid. fer following breaking news happening in south san jose. they are involved in a standoff. this is in west capitol expressway? >> and snell. good morning to you, marla. you can see behind me they have a portion of the complex shut down and surrounded. specifically a building to the right. a man is holed up with a machete. police are trying to talk him out of there i just spoke with

the security guard. he says this gentleman has been a problem. the man he says flipped him off and told him to leave before something happened to him. that's when he called police. they said the man threatened them with a machete and has been holed up in the apartment ever since. there was a report maybe he's the owner of the gun. so right now they are trying to talk the man out. you've been able to hear him yelling back and forth. they also say he was drinking. we understand they'll be coming out here to resolve a situation.

peacefully and nonviolently. this is strictly a local issue as far as local roads are concerne concerned. >> now we're also getting wind that residents of neighboring apartments have been evacuated. are you hearing that? >> reporter: people who live here have been evacuated. we're not sure if it's the entire complex. we're certain he has been evacuated. >> we'll continue to follow the story and check back in with you soon. thank you. in other news. it's 6:08. santa clara county will start the new year off with amnesty for unpaid traffic tickets. the county will give us a 50% reduction if certain unpaid tickets are paid between january 1st and the end of june. but there are several

conditions. it only applies to tickets due before 2009. investigators don't know what caused a double tire blowout on a southwest airlines jet in sacramento yesterday morning. they know what didn't cause it. investigators inspected the jet and runway all day. they didn't find any signs the runway is to blame. it was the second blowout in more than a year. good morning to you. let's check the warmer forecast with christina loren. >> it's been rather dry. but it's been pretty nice each and every afternoon. that's good news with the kids at home with you. at least they can get out doors. december is notoriously a wet month in the bay area. but we've had so little rain. still the third driest on record for san francisco. the second driest on record in san jose. and we're dating back to the 1800s so we need the rain. you still need to get out and

wash your vehicle. the rain won't do it for you. san francisco, you're at 58 in novato. 46 in san jose. and that means we're going to see another comfortable afternoon with temperatures in the 60s. it's going to take a while for the sun to burst through the clouds. that will make for good air quality. and then cool and cloudy but staying dry. that's good news for the new years plans. we are tracking north. a few more clouds today. showers as far south as san jose.

i think we'll see a little something in san jose. i'll take you through the extended forecast. let's see how the roads change with mike inouye. it looks like it's affecting the speeds. both bridges have fog advisories issued by chp. look approaching the benicia bridge. and we continue to see patches of slowing. that's definitely a possibility. a smooth drive on the freeway. not nice if chp catches up to you. speeds are okay. let's get a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's tougher to see the east shore freeway and fog making the lights glow.

welcome back at 6:14. north korea declared kim jong il's third son supreme leader today. it's the first public endorsement. it is the second day of funeral ceremonies for kim jong il who died of a heart attack earlier this month after 17 years in power.

it's safe to say this is not your typical police call. a fight between monks and priests in bethlehem. no joke. therm pun they were punching and swinging brooms at each other. the fight broke out while they were cleaning out the church for orthodox christmas celebration. not warm way to celebrate. the church shared by catholics, orthodox and armenians. this is not the first fight over the church. what a way to ring in the new year. >> much calmer here in the nbc studios. >> let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> the only thing i've been grappling with is the possible of whether or not we'll get showers as far south as san jose. it's looking pretty promising for that. this morning fog is certainly the weather factor.

we're watching really deep pockets develop in the inland valleys. we have a lot of clouds overhead. that's keeping your temperatures up this morning. i keep checking these. and we're just not budging. 46 degrees right here in san jose. so overall a mild start makes way to a comfortable afternoon. not rain. until tomorrow. temperatures work out like this. 60 degrees in san jose. you probably notice the haze suspended in the atmosphere. you went outside yesterday, what a difference. we got a little bit of rain

yesterday in the north bay. as a result we're back in the good range for air quality for the greater bay area. as we head through tomorrow. stronger onshore flow. good air quality everywhere. that's the good news. yesterday we might have the spare the air. not the case. the jet stream will set up on top of us. so we have enough wind in the atmosphere to mix up all the matter that was just suspended under the stagnant air mass. and it's going to be mild through the holiday weekend. at the end of next week we see a substantial dip to rusher in good rain chances all the way through next weekend. overall 2012 is more active. let's look at your drive with mike. >> walnut creek, heads up for 680. we have a new accident reported involving a big rig. it's in the third range leaving

from the change. so your third lane, with unof your middle lanes is blocked by the big rig. i'll track tla accident carefully. the rest of the area is looking light. highway 4. no problems through antioch and pittsburgh. concord is not reporting any problems despite that visibility keeps coming down from fog in the area. we did report the standoff position. west capitol expressway. that's where the apartment complex is. so it's only accessing that complex that you have to worry about. so bob will continue to update us there. we'll look to see how things are shaping up to the golden gate

bridge. the visibility is an issue here as well look, there's fog. back to you. >> you do that well. thank you, mike. 6:18. an unexpected knock at the door for law enforcement netting dozens of arrest in the east bay. officers searched for 550 suspects at their homes and workplaces. so the total arrest number could rise. >> there's about to be a show yn down between residents in campbell and people trying to ep up a nightclub. next week the proposal will get another look.

the residents are not pleased. that type of late night activity in downtown campbell is not what we want to be known for. >> property owner matt clemchuck said he's already invested $200 million into the proposal. still ahead a live update on the police standoff we're following in san jose. also, china is looking to take another giant leap for mankind. and we will take a look at the stock market and some of the g dogogf theear coming up ea in just a minute.

the santa rosa press democrat was sold by "the new york times" company on tuesday to a florida-based media group. the deal also includes the north bay business journal. china is making a big push to get to the moon. by the end of 2016 it plans to launch space laboratories manned space flights and the vetch wall

goal is to put a man on the moon. yes, a few big companies will be more than happy to put an toend 2011. three companies come to mind. two based in the area. that company stocks started the year at $300. more than $300 a share. now around 60. the other is research in motion around canada. if that company doesn't fire the ceo soon, i will be shocked. many have chosen to sell the stocks with tax purposes. there are only two days left. san francisco based gap joined netflix on the list of worst customer service. they ranked online interaction. amazon is the top. the study surveyed 8500 online shoppers.

police have surrounded a complex where a man is holed up inside with a machete. that story is coming up. good morning, everybody. i'm marla tellez. it is just about 6:28. good morning, everybody. we continue to follow breaking news in san jose where police are in the middle of a standoff with a 44-year-old man who barricaded himself inside an apartment. let's see what's happening. what can you tell us out there? >> good morning to you, jon. this is going on for three and a half hours. police have not been able to talk to the man.

they've had communication with him. but they've not been table to get him to surrender his machete that he has inside. you can see the police presence. a lot of prifrs have shut down a building. the security guard with the complex went to tell the man to keep his music down. this is a recurring problem with the man. it's the second time tonight he was trying to get him to turn the music down. when he went in the second time, that man threatened him sochlt this man called police. you have the situation where we're in right now. we spoke to other residents who know the man in passing. one person described him as paranoid, not all together. thinks people are after him. one lady said he's a friendly outgoing crazy guy. they were never afraid of him. never saw him threatening

anyone. they're surprised this is happening. police say he threatened them when he approached with the ma. they believe that he is the only one inside. that's one reason they're taking all the precautions out here. >> bob, thank you very much. police on the scene handling that now. we'll keep you posted throughout the day. bob redell will be back to check on that story. now she's onset with us. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren for the forecast. this morning we have dangerous fog developing. when we started the show at 4:30 a.m. you had three miles of visibility. now throughout the city of san francisco we're talking about visibility that we are measuring in hundreds of feet. so you really need to take it easy. and it's not just confined to the city.

the deep fog is settling in. we have rain in the forecast. that's all coming up. first let's see how the fog is impacting. now we have a disabled big rig affecting you as you hit the bay there. this is not looking very good now. they've moved the camera. we have a big rig blocking one lane out of treasure island. there's slowing approaching the scene. there's some debris out of san francisco as you're approaching the sky way. we'll give you the details coming up. >> new this morning, a south bay bus driver is in the hospital after his bus slammed into a semitrialer early this morning. it's still unclear who is at fault for the crash, which happened at 4:00 at 7th street in san jose. right now a tow truck on scene. but still unclear how long it will take to clear up the crash

scene. for now the intersection does remained shut dun. the driver of the semitruck is okay. and the bus driver is expected to recover as well. fir crews mopping up after a brush fire in the berkeley hills damages two multimillion dollars homes. one home then quickly spread to another. the narrow streets made this one tough to battle for the firefighters. people living nearby were evacuated. there were very, very intense moments. a live power line fell onto one of the fire engines. fortunately nobody was hurt. the fire was moving extremely fast. >> all the sparks were shooting up. people up hill from there were watering down their property. >> we brought our suitcases and put them in the car. >> scary stuff.

two firefighters were treated. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the bay area air quality management district is putting an end to the burn season. people all around. police are looking for a man who rammed a san francisco cop car making his escape. it happened at 5th and international boulevard. officers were in oakland looking for a kidnapping and assault suspect. but the suspect spotted police and then rammed their car to get away. the officers were not hurt. 6:33. walnut creek police are looking more for victims in connection with a child molestation case. john astor was arrested on ten counts of felon sex crimes. he's accused of assaulting a 14-year-old boy at his home and

another boy more than ten years ago. investigators say the victims were not students at the schools he worked in. police are looking for a suspect who attacked a woman on a trail. the woman says she was pushing her 2-year-old son in a stroller. that's when she heard footsteps behind her and was suddenly shoved to the ground. she said the attacker fell down and when her son started to cry, the attacker ran away. neither the woman nor the child were hurt. in marin county police have a robbery suspect in custody. he set off an alarm just before 5:00 this morning. he entered through the roof after climbing a nearby tree. the 42-year-old suspect was booked on several burglary charges. it looks like we're going to

end up 2011 on a smooth, warmer ride. let's check in with christina loren to tell us what's happening. >> always a smooth ride with you two. we're looking good now. we have clouds rolling in. onshore flow. high and mid level clouds in addition to the low level cloud cover. and we're also picking up drizzle on the radar. might have to turn on the windshield wipers. really thick fog at the coast. and this morning we're dropping off across the board. a quarter of a mile from santa rosa through novato. a quarter mile in san francisco with delays out of sfo. hundreds of feet of visible. now we're starting to drop in mountain view. san jose, you're next. get ready for visibility to continue to follow through the next couple of hours. i'm forecasting between 8:00 and 10:00 today. limited sunshine for the second half of your afternoon. nonetheless we're starting out mild with plenty of 50s. it's a comfortable afternoon. we'll reach the 60s. as we head through your friday, the last friday of 2011, can you

believe it, light showers, good air quality. the moisture is passing through the bay area. today we have two counties in the moderate range in the north bay and the south bay. as we head through friday, everybody will be back in the good range. so looking good across the board. the storm track is still to the north. for us we might see a little bit of drizzle. but the rain doesn't move in until tomorrow. the best chance for rain is through the mid-morning hours. when we wake up we might have showers on the radar. we need the rain. 62 in redwood city. 62 with sun and clouds today. and 60 in san jose. staying nice and mild. want the to talk about the air quality really quick. today moderate range in the

north bay and south by. by tomorrow, good air quality overall. and you don't have to worry about sparing the air any longer for the first day of the year. it will breakthrough the clouds. let's find out how they're treating the drive. >> as you're talking about that rolling in along the peninsula and the north bay. going to have to lower the speeds. keep the beams on. right here we do have a disabled truck. so we have slowing approaching the area from san francisco. still reports of glass on the roadway. there's a crew out there cleaning things up. we have a little slowing into the city on the upper deck of the bay bridge. we'll look out to the other roadways for the south bay.

the commute route is going smoothly. but the police activity that bob reported over near capitol expressway and snell avenue. capitol expressway and snell are open. those are major roadways. i want to make sure folks know that. >> good information. thank you, mike. the state supreme court is ready to make an important ruling about local redevelopment money. here's is the deal. the court will decide for the state will take $1.7 from cities to close the state budget gap. redevelopment agencies including the cities of san jose and union city have filed a suit, claiming the move violates proposition 22. that's a measure designed to keep the state from using local funds to pay off the bills. they argue the legislature has final say. a decision is expected by 10:00 this morning. tune in to the news at 11:00 a.m. for that ruling. you can also log onto nbc bay area.com.

welcome back, everyone. 6:41 now. this morning the republican presidential race influx in iowa. the newest candidate to become a big time player, rick santorum. brian mooar is out near capitol hill this morning. the latest polls show a big shift among republican voters, correct? >> yeah, jon. it's showing volatility in the electorate in iowa. it's showing that social conservatives are still shopping around. they haven't settled on any one candidate. they're going back and forth kicking the tires, not liking what they sigh and moving on. mitt romney is a big beneficiary. ron paul is still hanging on. 22% of the support. rick santorum, the big sur prize, he's been gaining momentum. now the story behind the story. some are knocking the methodology because it's only a

registered republican. in iowa on the day of the caucus, you can go in and reregister. so there's some thinking this poll could understate ron paul's popularity and overstate rick santorum's. it shows there is a lot going on right now, that the social conservatives are canceling each other out, and, jon, we know a lot can happen in the next few days. if everything continues on this line, mitt romney could walk away with iowa and then new hampshire back to back. >> wow. that would be monumental. coming up next on "today in the bay", we are live at the scene. breaking news. police standoff in south san jose. bob redell will give us a live report coming.up. and we'll look at the markets on the last few days of 2011

meteorologist christina loren telling us about the weather. >> we don't have to worry about rain. a lot of people are coming to celebrate the new year. across the country it's going to be more mild than what they'll see at times square. we like california for that reason. we have three quarters of a mile of visibility. something we are known for in the bay area. our thick fog. and this morning is one of the days where it's really, really thick all the way down the peninsula. and we'll see the fog drift east over san jose through the morning hours. right now you saw a look at the golden gate bridge socked in with fog. quite the contrary in san jose.

this will change. we'll show you changes throughout the "today show." let's take you to the maps and show you where the thickest fog is. check ahead with your carrier or if you're trying to pick somebody up from the airport. we have flight delays at sfo. three kwearls of a mile in napa. that means the fog is starting to drift. in san jose, you're 15, 20 minutes out from starting to lose visibility there. we'll see comfortable conditions. temperatures are starting out mild. 50s in san francisco and novato. 47 degrees in hayward. 36 in fairfield. low pressure continues to ride to our north. but as we head through tomorrow, the jet stream starts to take a dip. so today we're talking about onshore flow and thick fog.

out of his unit here in south san jose. but so far they've had no luck. so testimony complex is part of it. a man wouldn't turn down his loud music and threatened the guard. loud music is an issue where the resident for some time. now officers believe he was drinking. he was 44 years old. he lives by himself. a little out there. one woman described him as the friendly outgoing crazy guy. >> he says, oh, you're so beautiful. give me a kiss. no big deal. it has never scared me. >> san jose merge, their version of s.w.a.t. is arriving to join the plain clothed officers who have had the unit and the

building surrounded for quite some time now. this by the way is not affecting local traffic. and we're talking about capitol expressway and snell. where this apartment complex is. all this activity is isolated to the area behind me. jon, marla? >> bob, thank you for the update on that. east bay police are looking for a driver who hit a pedestrian trying to get away from officers. they tried to stop him 4:00 yesterday afternoon near 98 in oakland. police say rojas took off in a white suv hitting a pedestrian during the getaway. the suv was found abandoned in oakland, but police are still looking for that woman. police are also looking for the man who rammed a san francisco police car. sfpd officers are looking for a kidnapping and assault suspect at 45th and international boulevard in oakland last night.

now the suspect spots police and rammed their car as they made a get away. no officers were hurt. oakland police are keeping an eye on a vacant lot to make sure occupy protesters do not reoccupy that site. officers raided the cypress triangle encampment last night. one man was arrested. 14 others cited for trespassing. the owner of the lot complained to police about the camping, and they moved in. nobody during the raid was hurt. one south bay community is on the fence about plans to open a high end pet store in their neighborhood. the san diego based chain petco is opening an unleashed boutique store in willow glen on lincoln avenue. now some pet owners say it could put mom and pop stores in the dog house. the stores are smaller than a typical petco store. they specialize in natural, organic and higher end products. the u.s. government is

ordered to pay $18 million to a man who lost his family to a marine corps jet crash. the wife and mother-in-law all died when the aircraft crashed into their home. they blamed a mechanical failure. investigators blamed a series of bad decisions by the pilot trainee. he survived by ejecting before the crash. the man accused of shooting an afghan war veteran at his homecoming party goes to court today. the 19-year-old man shot christopher sullivan friday when zun value tried to break up a fight over a football game. christopher sullivan is still listed in critical conditions. doctors say he may be paralyzed from the neck down. it's 6:53. the "today show" is coming up. here's matt lauer. >> good morning, a last-minute shakeup in the republican presidential race in iowa.

night. christie smith is live in berkeley with an update on the fire. good morning, christi. >> good morning, marla. we're starting to see neighbors walking around trying to see the damage for themselves. it's pretty bad. this home here and the one behind it tucked away in trees. investigators will be here in an hour or so. one man saw sparks in the trees and looked closer and saw it was his neighbor's house that was on fire around 8:30 last night. to make matters worse, a power line came down and crashed over a fire truck. and there was really nervous neighbors who hosed down their own home. this is in an area with a lot of trees and bushes. some of the neighbors evacuated. no residents were hurt. four firefighters are recovering. two suffered from smoke
