some traffic in the bay area. this is in san francisco? oakla oakland. it is friday, december 30th. this is "today in the bay." keeps us on our toes. good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. it doesn't matter because you can't see much. throughout the morning hours, you saw bob redell. as you look above his head. you can see the rain showers coming down in the light. watch for that. but that's actually drizzle because the fog is so thick. flight delays out of sfo. upwards of an hour. expect those to ripple

keep an kwi on partyiers. police have arrested more than 1,000 people in the bay area. almost 500 of them were arrested in alameda county. dui checkpoints will be set up throughout the bay area tonight and tomorrow. the state supreme court says yes, in fact, it is okay for the government to take away local redevelopment money that could take away money from the 49ers stadium project. they committed $40 million to the new stadium. no one is sure if the money will make it to the project. but one council member is not too worried. >> i believe it will move ahead because the funds were committed prior to this legislation. >> gilmore says the city cannot provide the cash the 49ers are on the hook for it. they are urging city leaders to

put pressure on lawmakers. the redevelopment ruling may mean an end to the ballpark. they wanted to build a new stadium to keep the team in town. but many of the proposed projects require redevelopment money to actually work out. city mayor quan is remaining hopeful. she says a new coliseum city. plan for that may be feasible without the redevelopment money. 6:04. a 16 jeerld bay area girl is claiming a san jose sharks fan hit her in the head during the game. she was watching the sharks. she's a native canadian and a die hard fan. the 16-year-old also has a benign brain tumor. she says she suffered a concussion after a drunk in sharks fan began harassing her and hit her in the back of her head. >> it was like both hands, like this part, just went down on the

back of my head. it still hurts. it feels like a big bruise. >> now she says doctors tole her the tumor is not affected. as of this morning, no one has been arrested. they interviewed the who stated the contact was accidental during the celebration of a shark's goal. beginning in january, you have to pay what verizon wireless calls a convenience fee just to pay your bill ls. they're charging you to pay your bills. bob re gel joins us live to break it down exexplain it. good morning, bob. >> good morning, jon, it's clear cut. verizon will charge a $2

convenience fee any time you use your debit or credit card to make a one time payment online or by phone. typically the phone carrier says those people are the ones making payments at the the last minute. by charging this fee they're trying to push those customers to pay through automatic credit card payments, which means the payments would be more than likely to come in sooner and on time. but the idea of having to pay verizon to pay verizon is not going over well with customers. >> it's a lot when it sums up through the year. >> you're going to get people on your bad side. >> it feels like a penalty to m me. >> customers can't avoid this fee by paying the bill in person at a verizon store like this one or at a kiosk. by mail. electronic checking or as i mentioned before, by signing up for automatic credit card

payments. last year you might recall verizon tried to impose a fee for those who used a credit card to pay for tv or internet service. the cell phone carrier decided to nix that idea once a lot of customers started complaining. are they going to do this this time around? not clear. bob redell, jon, marla. >> bob, thank you very much. 6:07. people in palo alto are trying to stop at&t's plans for a network of cell phone antennas. they want to put them on top of several yutility poles around palo alto. they left it open to appeals. one family filed an appeal yesterday. police caught the man responsible for a brutal 1999 cold case murder. prosecutors say the registered sex offender kidnapped the 21 yeerl and shot her four times.

>> does it give you any sense of relief? >> yes, it does. official years he thought he got away with this. >> he vanished from the home in november of 1999. her body was found two months later. the man involved in a standoff is in jail this morning. he faces multiple charges. police were called to the apartment yesterday about 2:45 in the morning after he refused to turn down his music and threatened a security guard. he refused to come out when police arrived and was armed with with a machete.

he wouked out holding a bottle of alcohol and tried to lung at a police dog. the dog bit him. no officers were hurt. a total of 12 of them have been arrested where they've b squatting since early september. work crews boarded up the houses, doors and windows. they also removed protesters camping out on a vacant lot. >> i was a little bit surprised to see the roads wet when i drove to work. >> a little bit. >> let's check the forecast with christina loren. >> good morning to you. you'll probably have to use your windshield wipers between now and the next three hours. the bulk of the moisture is coming down in the northern most portion of the united states. wii getting off shooting bands of cloud cover and really,

december in okay lan. the second driest in san jose. so this morning you have to use your windshield wiper ls. bring your umbrella if you don't want to get your clothes wet. throughout the morning hours, that's going to be the case. you can't gate away from it. the jet stream has been so far to the north over the past few days that we have not had the rain. at the end of next week that jet will be over the bay area. better rain chances. better sierra snow chances. take a look at this. two sides to every front. you have a warm side and a cold side. has this front continues to dip south, we'll see a few bans swing through the bay area. but we're getting the mist and drizzle now clearing out the air quality.

the lack of rain has been so bad out there with particlat matter to spend in the atmosphere. the winds will pick up as the front approaches. showers in the north bay. it's so mild. i don't know if you have your heater on now. that will make way to the mid 60s. gilroy, 65 there. 63 in los gatos. your temperatures are going to stay in the 60s. so unseasonably warm this time of year with good air quality. we thought that would be the case. so much moisture, that's not going to be the case. u long enough for us to see good air quality before another round of rain in there. u late wednesday to thursday is when the action starts to ramp up. that jet stream starts to dip over bay area and then we're

talking about the potential for rain showers wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday of next week but look at the 60s. you can't beat that for the first week of 2012. a group of 250 kids from the bay area will hit the slopes without their weed. a police chief stopped several bus us bound for utah early this week, confiscating marijuana, pipes and bongs along with rolling paper ls. police gave the teens a choice. turn over all the marijuana and paraphernalia or spend a night in juvenile detention. the kids gave it up. the police say about 17 teens were in possession. 6:18. a bay area chapter of the boy scouts is one of the latest victims of metal thieves. the famed symbol was stolen from

welcome back at 6:22. most people are taking time off for the holidays, the national debt is not. at the end of the day the nation's debt will come within $100 billion of the limit. that means president obama will need to alert congress and get to work on increasing the limit again. right now the debt ceiling is $15.194 trillion. well, people in samoa won't get to say tgif today. that's because they're skipping friday all together. they are moving to the other side of the international date line to sync their calendars with the biggest trading partners. san francisco is one of the u.s.'s top destinations to welcome the new year. travel ossy ranks it as number

eight. surprisingly orlando actually tops the list, and then new york city, south florida, las vegas and los angeles. 6:23 now. a letter accusing former hp ceo mark herd of financial misconduct has been made public. scott mcgrew joins us now. this is a scathing and damaging letter. >> it is the letter that cost herd his job as the head of hp. a court released the letter. it was held as evidence in a lawsuit. written by lawyer gloria allred on behalf of her client, former actress and hostess jodi fisher. the letter accused herd of repeatedly propositioning herd as she worked as a hostess to out of town parties. they left after it was sent to the board of directors. this is miss fisher in an nbc reality show. this is the tawdry and

stories. >> 6:29. christie smith is live in oakland with a look at what the changes could mean for you. there's almost 1,000 know laws. >> there's quite a few. yesterday we got used to the hands-free laws. some of them are big changes, like where you can buy your alcohol. specifically at supermarkets you can no longer go to the self service checkout area to buy your booze. similar to how it works with sbrets and spray paint. your little one is going to have to sit in the booster seat a little bit longer instead of six years old, they'll have to wait until they're at least 8 years old or over 4'9" tall.

potential witnesses. she's under investigation right now. bay remains in jail serving multiple life sentences. thieves are looking for more than a hot meal at fast food joints. two armed men burst into the mcdonald's on springs road wednesday and then leaped over the counter and demanded money. in that case three suspects matching the robber's descriptions were arrested. >> come january 15th you could be paying a little bit more for your cell phone bill but only if you are the largest cell phone company. bob redell joins us live to expl explain. >> good morning, customers are

already grabbing smart phones to express their disgust over the proposed fee did the guys in customer service get a lobotomy? that's one tweet tr a verizon customer after hearing that starting january 15th the largest cell phone carrier will be charging this $2 convenience fee for any time you make a credit or debit payment online or by phone. by charging this fee they're trying to push the customers to pay with electronic checks or through automatic credit card payments. this fee can be avoided if you pay in person snail mail will avoid the $2 fee. using your online bank, electronic checking, or as i mentioned earlier, automatic

credit card payments. last year they tried to impose for a fee for those who used a credit card to pay for the tv or internet service that verizon offers. will there be enough complaints for them to nix the $2 convenience fee? still to be determined. this has only been out on the ethernet for 24 hours now, if not less. during the next 24 hours it's more likely you're going to get caught if you're breaking tlau. officers will be out in force today and tomorrow with special orders to crack down on drivers using their cell phones. you can use the hands-free dwoiss but don't hold the phone to your ear. more than half a million tickets

were issued by the chp. bob wasserman has died. he passed away yesterday in fremont. he served for more than 35 years starting back in 1976 as the chief of police. he was hospitalized for an ailment. hi is survived by his wife and their son and daughter. he was 77 years old. a memorial service for a devoted citizen watchdog who died at the young age of 55.

be prohibited from using uv tanning devices through a doctor a lot of these laws go into effect later. the ones i just mentioned go into effect on sunday. i'm christie smith. jon and marla, back to you. >> thank you for trying to help us clear that up. appreciate it. 6:50 now. fire investigators are still determining the cause of a three-alarm fire that damaged two homes in the berkeley hills. the fire happened wednesday night on miller avenue. not far from grizzly peak boulevard. the two homes are surrounded by heavy brush. residents had to be evacuated during the fire. four were treated for heat exhaustion and minor sprains. none of the residents were injured. >> the nationwide closure of sears and k-mart stores won't

to nix the plan. jon and marla. not making friends. thanks. >> a federal judge says they reduced the kor bonn emissions is unconstitutional. the judge says it discriminates. the regulations require producers, refiners and importers to reduce the carbon footprint of their fuel by 10% over the next decade. the judge's ruling mean thas cannot punish them for now. a georgia woman says she knows of three men who escaped decades ago. her two brothers clarence and jon escaped from the prison in 1962 with another man. they were in prison for robbing the bank with a toy gun. she says they made it out alive. >> the only reason they put them in alcatraz was because they

could not keep them anywhere else they kept getting away, getting away. >> she is planning on coming to celebrateth anniversary of the alleged escape. if her brothers are alive they would be older than 80 years old. the hiker rescued from a southern california clip. this is all caught on tape. firefighters were called in after a man slid 100 feet down a hillside, trying to get his dog there. yeah. as you can see, this one very dangerous and not easy for the rescue. the hiker we lowered to safe ground. we are very happy to report they all got out of there and made it away. the build a bear workshop is recalling 300,000 bears.
