>> we have showers that could slow you up in the north bay. we need the rain, and it looks like the bulk of the moisture from the area of low pressure will come through over the next few hours. we'll see sunshine for the second half of the day and temperatures close to 70 degrees. take a look at the batch of rain oon the the north bay. keep that in mind and we'll keep you posted on your 2012 forecast. first, let's check your drive with mike. >> natural air filter. that is not going on tonight. new incident, though. reports of some metal right over the highway. i haven't seen any disruption to the flow of traffic here. a light volume. we'll continue to track this and let you know if it continues to block any lanes. >> thank you, mike. 5:01. the new year started off as a very violent one for the city of

san jose. bob redell is live outside of police headquarters. bob, how bad has it been. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. happy new year to you. several people stabbed, two people shot, one, we believe, is still fighting for his life. all of this is taking place during what was just a four hour period on new year's eve. you can see these were separate incidents that took place in four different locations throughout the city. the violence started around 10:00 on saturday night. they shot a man and a teenage boy at the end of the year party. it was one of those victims who was in critical condition as of last night. around midnight there was a large fight in which several people were hurt. some taken to the hospital with stab wounds. a couple more incidents where people were hurt as well. police don't believe any of the crimes were related. while san jose pd is busy with

violent crimes, it won't be busy with burglary alarms. yesterday the department kicked in a new policy that says officers will not automatically respond to burglary alarms at homes and businesses anymore unless they know for sure that there is an actual break-in. and the department uses this number to back up their argument for doing this. unfortunately we saw it here this weekend. >> it's amazing to see the numbers. thank you very much, bob. >> it's 5:03 now. a man walking on interstate 80 in san francisco remains hospitalized after being hit by a car. it all happened around 11:00 on westbound 80 near 4th street. the driver who hit him stopped and cooperated with the highway patrol. the man was knocked unconscious

buzz w but was breathing when the officers found him. it's 5:0 #. san jose police arrested the person responsible for the 41st homicide of 2011. she was found outside a home in willow glen on friday night covered in blood. she called police saying a man had attacked her and killed another woman in the house. they found a bloody machete in the backyard of the home. the murder may have been the result of a domestic dispute. they have yet to say what her relationship was to the murdered woman. neighbors think it was the mother. a fire on new year's day sent one woman to the hospital. that fire burned three homes between frederick and waller

streets. christie smith is live in san francisco where firefighters, christie, we hear are still on the scene. >> reporter: good morning to you. i just spoke with one of the firefighters on the scene. she says as bad as it looks on the front, it looks much worse on the back. they don't know how it started. but investigators are expected back out here when it gets light. now they're on fire watch after everything started and quickly spread. big smoke and flames. neighbors evacuated. but with such a challenge is the homes are close together. they have a fire wall in place. that doesn't always work. the jump to three alarms. about a dozen people displaced. one person taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

another person suffered shortness of breath. the red cross is helping out people who need it. i'm christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you for the update. a man hunt is under way for a gunman after a park ranger was killed. i believe this is the wrong video. 34-year-old margaret anderson was shot to death yesterday morning during a routine traffic stop. she was the mother of two and her husband a park ranger. deputies identified benjamin colton barnes as a person of interest. the 24-year-old is an iraq war veteran with survivalist skills. >> we have a dangerous situation where we have somebody with a high powered weapon not afraid to use it. he has already done so. >> he is also the suspect in a

shooting of four people. just hours before the ranger was killed. more than 100 visitors in the park hat the time of the shooting spent the night at the visitor's center. they were escorted out of the park this morning. >> it's 5:06. a new year's day tragedy shaking up a normally quiet suburbs of san diego. four people were found shot to death inside a home just blocks away from a famous hotel. police and sheriff investigators remain at the scene where the body of three men and a woman were discovered yesterday. a s.w.a.t. team decided to use a robot to go inside to be sure a shooter wasn't holed up. neighbors say two of the victims were brother and sister. one of the men was in the military. investigators say it's a crime scene and it's expensive. friends and activists gathered to remember oscar grant, who was killed by a bart police officer three years ago.

mehserle shot unarmed grant. friends and family continue to protest mehserle's conviction of manslaughter rather than murder. they say his death will be in vain if they don't continue to speak out against police brutality. >> the only way that change can come into effect is if we unite as one. and one things we have to come together and agree that police brutality is unacceptable. >> about 100 people gathered in downtown oakland for the march yesterday that ended up at fruitvale bart station. he served less than two years. he was released in june. >> it's 5:08. it's a spare the air day. mother nature is helping out acrossing to christi fa loren. >> we need the rain. we need better air quality. right now we don't have a lot of

activity. but certainly enough to lay down any particlat matter suspended in the atmosphere. we have high pressure coming in strong yesterday. we broke temperature records. today we'll be just about as warm in the south bay. i'll get to the forecast in just a minute. we have to see the showers roll through first. and they come through over the course of the next few hours. behind it we have a lot of clearing. it's only a matter of time before the sun comes out and you can see the better air quality. as you can see here, showers are starting to roll past san francisco along the bay bridge. we have a stall just to the north of redwood city that just developed. we'll continue to see spotty activity until 9:00, maybe 10:00 a.m. this morning. and then clearing. take a look at where temperatures are heading. you're at 45 in san jose. we stop the clock o on your future cast at noon. it's going to be really comfortable through the south bay. not as nice in the north bay. temperatures still in the 40s at noon. if you live in the south bay you'll get the warmest conditions. 65 in gilroy. 63 in san jose.

as the sun goes down so early, so close to 5:00, really our highs come in at 3:30, 4:00 p.m. this time of year. we're going to warm up. it's going to be nice. throughout the remainder of the week, another chance for rain. first, we want to talk to mike about your drive. >> i would love to talk about this. an easy drive right now. the maze and the approach to the bay bridge is not a problem. we're likely to see a lighter volume of traffic as folks start their school year back and get back to work in the new year as well. we'll move you southbound 880. the earlier debris just north of high street. indeed, chp says it's sticking out from the center divider and into the fast lane. definitely, definitely move over one lane or maybe two to the right. your middle lanes and slow lanes are just fine passing by if coliseum. the other side of the bay, 101 and 280 moving nicely with no delays between san mateo, highway 92 and san francisco

example of the city making it tough for businesses. when employers add in mandate from the city, payroll tax there at 1.5%. nine paid sick days and health care, many businesses say they're just getting squeezed. teachers will be tweaking their lesson plans this year to include gay and lesbian history makers. a new law requires public schools to teach about the contribution of gays and lesbians and bans materials that reflect negatively on gays and lesbians as well as particular religions. some parents are trying to get a referendum on the ballot to eliminate the new curriculum. right now it's 5:12. some cute stolen cargo is back home this morning. how this little guy got his way back into the san francisco zoo. plus, how about a 13,000 dplin your pocket? one transit trip that could cut major costs. and for all the information

him to get into his backpack. laura and i trying to figure out how he did that. police say they questioned the man but did not arrest him. banana sam looked cold and hungry, but otherwise he was like a champ. >> come here little monkey. 5:16 now. time to check in with christina loren. >> rest assured, banana sam is home this morning, everybody. i know, it's a good thing. and we've got showers on the radar also. right now you're still nice and dry on the local highways. but that cell is going to pass redwood city through the next 10 to 15 minutes, so get ready for light rain showers here and give yourself plenty of time to get to work, although the highways are very light, you don't want to race out the front door with slick conditions like this. as we head throughout the day today it's just a matter of time before the sun comes back out.

i think over the course of three or four hours we see the front come through. behind that, clear conditions. so the sun will be out. we'll probably have better air quality in the north bay courtesy of the showers. still a spare the air day. we want to point that out. this front is pretty weak, and it's weakening as we speak. you can see the showers getting cut off. what's happening is we have the area of low pressure colliding with a big dry ridge of high pressure. that's what brought us up to the 70s yesterday. as we head throughout the morning hours the two continue to work against each other. so we won't see all that much rain, especially inland. a lot of that will take place along the peninsula and the marin county coastline. take a look at where we're headed in san jose. 45 now. up to 62, which is our average high this year, by noon. we round out the day with mid-60s everywhere across the board. your seven day outlook shows you we get another chance of rain as we head through late thursday into friday. i think we're going to see good

shower activity out of the next one. we need it. it's going to clear the air quality, but also we need the rain. it's the second driest december ever. it was for san jose, oakland and san francisco. so we'll take whatever we can get. we'll keep talking about the showers, pinpoint them for you all morning long. right now let's find out what mike is following on the roads for you. >> i'm following where the showers are going so we continuously update with you, christina. so far no drama because of those. no drama for the south bay. a nice, easy drive. that's where i showed you the earlier traffic shot with a light volume o north of tully to 680. the south bay is construction free and incident free. we'll move up through sunol without any problems for 680. we have a nice easy drive with 14 minutes registering on the travel time out of the altamont pass. 580 at 205. there was reports of a small grass fire, but i'll track that for you as well. no disturbance to the flow of traffic through the area. and no homes in danger, from what i understand. we'll get a look out here and show you the bart system. normal schedule for bart, no

delays for these tracks. also muni running a normal schedule. but holiday schedules or saturday schedules for many others. the ferries, ac transit. keep those in mind. check your agency for any changes they may have for today. holiday for many. golden gate bridge, or bay bridge, i'm sorry. let's check the bay bridge with a light volume of traffic. looking at just a few cars. you can count them. one, two, three, four, five. a nice, easy drive out of the north bay into the city. christina has woarned, light showers through the south bay. >> thank you very much, mike. $13,000 is a lot of money to save in san francisco if a two-person household uses public transit instead of driving. a new report breaks it down. nearly $1,100 a month was saved by taking public transit. annually that amounts to just over $12,000 in extra cash. >> not bad.

hit 70 through the midsection of the week. we have a warm-up on the way. let's check with mike to see if there's problems out there. >> despite a lighter volume of traffic, we've had quite the number of accidents. the latest is northbound 87 as 280. your connector through downdown. it sounds like the accident is blocking the roadway after the car hit the guardrail on the side. this will affect your view on the traffic. these flashing lights, one lane is partially blocked. >> it's 5:31. investigators trying to figure out what caused the new year's day fire. they believe it may have been deliberately set. the fire burned three homes. >> reporter: investigators are expected back out here this morning when it gets lighter. i spoke with one firefighter who is on scene this morning. i asked her if she knows how it

started. she said not yet. but they're out here this morning on fire watch to make sure the fire doesn't flair up. it was so big. it quickly spread to two others. this is about 8:00 when it started. neighbors evacuated. took more than 100 firefighters an hour to knock it down. they tell me the real challenge is the homes are so close together and there was no real wind last night. but one person was take on the the hospital with unspecified injuries. another person has breathing problems. a dozen people displaced, but the red cross is helping them out. so is san francisco animal control for the people who have pets. i'm christie smith, jon and laura, back to you. >> it's 5:32. l.a. police say there have been a dozen more arson fires

overnight. investigators released surveillance video of a person of interest. police stress he's a person of interest and is not a suspect. some 50 fires have been set this weekend. investigators believe they're all linked. >> every possible rumor, perception, our investigators are active. they're taking this really personal. >> most of the fires were in parked cars and in some instances the flamed jumped the carport and apartment. anchts 5:3 #. occupy protesters planning to occupy today's rose parade. thousands of demonstrators planning to trail the marchers with an octopus shaped human float. they say it's supposed to represent the hold corporations have on the country. occupiers estimate anywhere from 4,000 to 40,000 people could

turn out for the protest. this is video of a min demei demonstration on friday. disrupting or impeding the parade is punishable by fine and jail time. parade preparations getting final touch this is morning. this is the 123rd time the floats will make their way through the streets of pasadena. normally the rose parade happens on new year's day. the parade operates on a never on sunday policy instituted way back in 1983 to avoid interfering with religious services. that's why january 2nd, this year's theme of the parade is just imagine. now you can see the whole thing this morning here on nbc bay area. coverage starts at 8:00. $25,000 reward is being offered for information about a friday night shooting in oakland that killed a 5-year-old boy.

it happened in front of his father's taco truck. little gabriel martinez jr. was helping unload supplies whensho. a man who either just ordered or was waiting order opened fire and jumped in a car and took took off. this new year started as a violent one. bob redell is live. i guess this is the reason police say they'll no longer respond to burglar alarms. >> reporter: yeah, that's a new policy that went into effect yesterday, jon, january 1st. it was planned in advance, not in response to what happened over the weekend, several people were stabbed twochlt people were shot. all of this took place during a four-hour period. four different locations in areas throughout the city.

republican presidential candidates making their final pushes before tomorrow's caucus. tracie potts is live in des moines, iowa, where final poll results could be surprising. >> we're watching rick santorum closely because of the latest upswing in the polls. particularly if you look at the last couple of days of the des moines register poll. in that poll, here's the breakdown. mitt romney, the front-runner, but ron paul, only two points behind.

that is a statistical tie. in that poll rick santorum is third. but if you look at the the last couple of days of the poll, he's only three points behind romney. that also is a statistical tie. and so they're very close at the top right now. >> terms of what may happen in the caucus. who is the most conservative candidate? they all say it's me. and that's been a big issue here as well. what's interesting out of the latest numbers is that four out of ten iowa voters say they could still change their minds. this is a caucus system that's so different from primary. no secret ballot from behind the curtains. it's friends and neighbors coming out frying to convince each other to change their vote. we could see more movement on the day of voting. laura? >> thank you very much, tracey for the update.

nine of the presidential candidates get perfect marks for the america civil liberties union. all were graded for their stance on issues like immigration, gay rights and abortion. president obama received an "a" on only one issue, allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. he received lower marks on immigration, abortion rights and going back on the issue of guantanamo bay. it gave low ratings to most of the republican candidates. scoring the worst, mitt romney, rick santorum and michele bachmann. police in new york city investigating a fire outside an islamic center in weeks. late last night a molotov cocktail was thrown at the building. they are trying to if anything you out if it's linked to two similar ones. it shocked many in the community. >> i was shocked. why was anybody attacking it?

>> how could we be attacked? i'm a citizen of the u.s. how do we do this, you know? >> police report the molotov cocktails were made with bottles from starbucks. the islamic center is one of the most prominent shiite mosques in new york city. nobody was hurt in any of the attacks. overseas iran has successfully test fired a long range missile proving it could hit u.s. and israeli military bases in the region if attacked. it comes days after iran's threat to halt oil shipments through the strait of hormuz. they have threaten an oil embargo. iran denies it's involved in producing such weapons. and ousted egyptians leader hosni mubarak was wheeled into the courtroom on a stretcher.

he faces charges in connection with the deaths of more than 800 protesters during the uprising that led to his ousting. mubarak is 83 and is in custody in a hospital where doctors say he has a heart condition. and and his two sons face corruption charges. he was in power for 29 years. nasa is shooting down the doomsday myth that 2012 will bring the end of the world. and we're all very happy to hear that. the mayan calendar ends on december 21st, 2012. nasa wants you to rest assured it's not written in the stars. thank you very much. some fear a planet could crash into the u.s. but nasa says there's no evidence this thing is real or that any objects are close enough to earth to collide in the next year. they have also ruled out solar storms and the flipping of the earth's poles. >> we'll keep you posted.
