good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check the forecast with christina loren. >> good morning. we're looking good where you can see. but we have thick fog at the coast. you want to travel cautiously. we're expecting all the vizabilities to drop off. really give yourself plenty of time to get to work. the air is compressing what's out in the atmosphere forcing all the moisture to the surface. so dense pockets of fog. we'll be tracking this for you. maybe more showers come into the mix. we'll talk about that coming up. first, let's check your drive this morning. you know the fog will be a factor. that map you just showed,

less than a quarter mile in san mateo. thick fog for the bridges. they all have fog advisories. we'll send it back to you. an east bay community is ringing in the new year with the reality of the same problem. some residents say they want to take their streets back. candles were lit for 5-year-old gabriel martinez jr. he was shot and killed friday night at 55th and international outside his father's taco, his father, choking back emotion, explained what happened. we apologize. we're attempting to get that sound from the father. police say they have very few leads in the murder. a $25,000 reward is being

offered for any information. still more questions than answers. police say the woman killed in friday night attack. they say the girlfriend is the main suspect in the murder. they lived together. she is currently on vacation in puerto rico. police will not say why ivan was at her daughter's are still trying to deal with the heinous crime. it's horrifying. not good news. >> she is a nurse who came from somalia in 1986. she was covered in blood and

injured. >> the bart airport connector is opening and controversy isn't far behind. they promised to create jobs and decrease travel times to the oakland airport. bart is falling short of a promise. good morning. >> good morning to you. laura. you can't miss all the construction, down interstate 880 all the way towards the oakland airport. this project is years in the making. this is bart's airport connector. for supporters it's a big sign of asuccess of moving forward. some vocal critics see it as an expensive sign. we shot new video at the coliseum airport where eventually smaller three-car trains will move passengers to the airport on an aboveground track that may be faster and ha little bit more efficient than

air bart. this according to the tribune. the cost is nearly $500 million is also supposed to create a lot of jobs that are really needed in the area and be a sign of growth. but critics are say there won't be that many jobs, at least as many as promised. and the system won't be that much quick. $30 million to $500 million. but bart defends it saying a lot of other things are going on, including a sour economy. the debate could go on and on and on. reporting live in oakland. i'm christie smith. back to you. a jury selection beginning in the trial of an alleged gang member accused of killing a father and his two sons. 24-year-old ramos is accused of shooting the two men back in 2008. police say tony and his sons were on the way home when they

drove by a car driven by ramos. one died and told police ramos. police think they were mistaken for rival gang members. >> the city of oakland is ready to take down a symbol of the occupy protesters. oakland has revoked the commit at the plaza. police say they're creating a threat by attracting illegal activity. protesters say the they should remain because they're not responsible for it happening outside the area. >> we'll get a better idea of how little snow is up in the sierra. the california department of water resources will conduct a snow pack survey this morning. it is a big time difference from this time last year when snow-packed water content was

202% of the average. officials say there's still more than enough water from last year to prevent a drought in 2012. we need that pack to come. let's check in with christina loren. we need that to set up in the pacific. the jet stream has not taken a substantial dip over the past two weeks. every time i check they nudge it up to the north. models taking it further north. i do keep checking. not quite the end of this week but towards the end of next week as we make our way to the middle of january, that's when we'll see a more active pattern. it's a la nina that you can blame for now. we're not ruling out a really good snow season yet. we could still see a couple big storms bring in the snow. it's the fog. really dense pockets, especially

on the coast this morning. you're dropping off in fairfield, napa, and santa rosa. now high pressure is moving in and compressing the moisture. it forces all of the remnant moisture to the surface so you can't see. especially in san mateo we're measuring the visibility in hundreds of feet. we take you to the overall pattern. it's a clockwise rotation. we call it a dirty ridge of high pressure. the clouds are making their way through. you'll notice the sirus clouds today, but you'll have to wait until in the sun comes out. down through the south bay will clear the soonest. a high around 52 degrees. 5:00 p.m. as you make your way home from work. we'll talk about the next chance for rain and what's to come. let's check your drive with mike. >> you mentioned the very dense fog through san mateo. over the last ten minutes i have seen yellow on 92.

# even though there's no construction through the area, likely lower the speeds because of the fog in the area. a fog advisory for the san mateo bridge. the dunbardon bridge is moving clearer. the carquinez bridge also has a fog advisory. and a live look at the connector from san francisco. we typically have fog there but it seems extra thick this morning so we'll send it back to you with the warning. coming up, you've heard of red light cameras catching drivers in the act. now cameras could be coming to every car in california. in an effort to save lives.

welcome back to you. a foggy start. fog is thick in most bay area bridges. take it easy as you head out the door. 4:43 right now. >> it's a terrifying thought for parents, but each and every year children are killed when a family member backs over them in the car. one group says a simple addition no every car could save lives. >> kids move fast. many are injured or killed in their own driveway when they back up. dr. kevin whitelaw treats victims every year. >> we've seen kids with did he feel no injuries who are just knocked down and we screen them and send them home. we've seen kids who have had their torsos or head or chest run over and died. >> they asked seven california

hospitals to collect the injuries from january of 2005 to january of 2007. 46 kids were killed and 100 injured. the group wants rear view cameras to be required in all new american made cars. some in the auto industry say it will cost too much. the national highway traffic safety association has been considering a mandate since december of 2010. moms say it's a good idea. >> she would love that. because we see her little one running around and doesn't want to stay in one place. i mean, kids are curious. all my mirrors are behind me. but if you look in the rear view camera, you can see the coast is not clear. it's ten feet behind our car, directly in our path. that cone is about the size of a

this week topped by jobs report. today we get data on manufacturing, construction spending and last month's fed meeting. the dow fell to 12,217. the dow was up 5% for the year. the s&p 500 was slightly lower and the nasdaq lower as well. retailers could start feeling the new year's hangover today. they will get 550,000 online holiday gift returns today alone. that's 8% jump over a year ago and it would be a record. apple plans a media-related event in the bigger apple. reports say it's not related to a new version. it could be a year of publishing announcement, itunes or the icloud store. we just opened a beautiful apple store in grand central station. we'll see what's ahead.

back to you. >> we sure will. always on the mind. >> 4:46 right now. f.o.g. there's a lot of fog out there. >> making it hard to s-e-e. i'll stop myself before you want to slap me. we're looking good out there. make sure you wake up. have maybe two cups of coffee before hitting the road. when you have fog this thick, your surroundings that you're so used to, the familiar surroundings become unfamiliar. we have thick fog drifting along the peninsula. it's starting to creep in through the delta, livermore, concord, you're next to drop off below a quarter mile. san jose through the south bay, we're not going to see as much of the fog. but still nobody is spared from the very low visibilities this morning. we'll be watching those for you. it's still early. it's only 4:47. we're expecting the dense system of fog to develop through 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 this morning. so we have really comfortable temperatures out there. not too cold.

45 in hayward. 43 degrees in san jose. another mild start will make way to a comfortable day with temperatures in the 60s. tomorrow we're talking about the 70s. i put a 70-degree temperature on your seven-day. so we'll get to that in a moment. we have the clockwise rotation. high pressure is in control. but we're seeing a few of the clouds drifting in from an area of low pressure getting to the north. so we'll see a few high clouds go through the area of high pressure. you might not get out of the fog until 2:00 p.m. it all works out like this. warming through your wednesday. a lot of sunshine, offshore flow kicks into high gear tomorrow. clouds increase thursday. we're talking about potential for rain.

pretty foggy. 4:53 now. today is the day. iowa becomes the first state in the nation to choose a republican presidential nominee. many candidates boldly predicting victory, but a lot of voters still weighing their options. tracie potts is in iowa with a final look at all the campaigning. >> this late in the game for many voters is not just about issues, it's about trust. >> he's humble. and i trust him. i don't trust anybody else in hollywood. >> you heard it here first. ron paul is going to carry iowa. >> paul is polling just two points behind mitt romney who boldly predicted victory on monday. >> we're going to win this thing. >> rick santorum thinks he can win, too, and iowa's biggest poll suggests he's moving in that direction. >> i didn't have the money to compete here. but we were able to do it, why?
