as we transition to the second half of the month, we are with going to get our active weather pattern back. 46 in hayward. 46 in san francisco. it's chilly in hayward and novato and we have fog out there. let's see if that impacts you on the roads with mike. >> it will impact you on the drive. lower the speeds. we had a fog advisory issued which doesn't often give the fog advisory. take a look at the golden gate or the bay bridge. it's a smooth drive. but we have the fog advisory issued for the drive to the north bay. the bay bridge still monitoring an accident on the lower deck. i'll bring you an update in a couple of minutes. it's 5:01 now and nothing short of a wild ride in san francisco, and now it's over. one neighborhood left on edge after gunshots were fired from the roof of a costco store. christie smith is live in san francisco. she has the latest on what happened next. good morning, christi. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. and happy friday.

it's really quiet now. but what a night here in san francisco. it started around 11:00 when police started getting calls of shots fired out here. from either a building or the rooftops. when police arrived they heard it, too. sha shut down the streets immediately in intersections of all directions to figure out where it was coming from. what's so scary is there were a lot of people around here. there was a recording studio, a bed bath and beyond. a trader joe's. there was a lot of people around. they determined two men were shooting a rifle from the area. not necessarily targeting anyone, they say, just shooting. one clerk walked right into it. >> some shots were fired off. i heard three shots and kept walking further. i heard four more rounds go off and the cops drove up and told me to go back inside of the store. >> now, the man eventually came down from the rooftop through a

fire escape, and s.w.a.t. teams went in and cleared tout building to just to make sure no one was hurt inside. those two men were taken into custody. this are reports this morning that those men may have been drinking. they asked for time before they came down, they asked for time to finish up their cigarettes. frntdly in this whole incident nobody was hurt. reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith. jon and laura back to you. >> thank you for the update. san francisco police are looking for your help solving a 5-year-old cold case. officers will hold a news conference today to talk about the homicide of 20-year-old alberto casillas. he was shot to death on january #th of 2007. his mother will be at today's news conference. police looking for more possible victims of a san francisco school bus driver accused of molest twog girls.

55-year-old roberto is convicted of committing lewd acts with a girl under the age of 14. another girl with special needs also accused him of molestation. he worked as a school bus driver from 1994 to april of 2011. police are looking for the driver who hit and killed a man in a sunnyvale crosswalk. police say the man was crossing the street when a driver made a left turn against a red light, hitting the man. the driver took off. right now the only vehicle information investigators have is that it's a black or dark blue mini van. police are looking for a bank robber who walked into a chase bank and walked out with 3 thourk in cash.

he said he had a gun and he wanted cash. nobody was hurt in the rob i can. hundreds of health care workers could be out of a job and some some of the county's poorest residents moved out. laura, good morning. almost all the employees who work here at the burlingame long-term health care center could be out of a job. the patients would be force to find a new home. it all comes down to money. the health officials here are recommending the facility be shut down because the county is facing about $9 million in state budget cuts and because they say it just does not make sense to update the outdated 49-year-old building. what you're looking at here is

file video. so if the board of supes follows the recommendation, about 200 workers would be let go. the tougher news, of course, the 230 patients inside would have to find a new facility and of course, this is easier said than done. only one other public facility offers long-term care. and that place has fewer than a few dozen beds. the board of supervisors is expected to make a final decision on the issue february 14th. there we're talking potential layouts. more concrete here in the bay area. the state compensation insurance fund announced 500 jobs will be eliminated by april. so it looks to be a tough winter and spring for hundreds of people herement reporting live in burlingame. i'm marla tellez. laura and jon? the charges filed gns the state assemblywoman will going

forward this morning. she is excused from today's proceedings. she's accused of stealing $2,500 worth of merchandise back in october. she's not yet commented on the case. san francisco major ed lee is inviting the public to his inauguration ceremony this sunday at city hall. lee will be sworn in as the first elected asian mayor. he was appointed last february and elected in november to a four-year term. senator dianne feinstein will be there to swear in the mayor. willy brown will serve as the master of ceremonies. it's 11:00 a.m. if you would like to go. america's cup organizers have hit their first mayor fund raising goals, that is covering san francisco's coast in holding the race. they agree to host the 2013 america's cup on the condition no taxpayer money be used.

the committee hopes to raise 32 million dollars over three years. the finals will be almost a year later. >> looks like they're on track. that's a lot of money in this economy. 5:08 now. want to check in with christina loren right now. little fog by at the golden gate bridge. and that's going to be the dimpbts in terms of us not reaching records levels today. but we'll only see a little bit of fog for the first part of the day. inland city is looking really good. we could see the fog creep through the delta as per usual. what a difference a day makes here with the onshore flow. low cloud cover in the city by the bay until 10:00 a.m. we're running four degrees colder than we were at this

point yesterday. and you want to grab a jacket. but dress if layers again. the warmest locations. it's going to be nice. about 65 degrees in places like livermore. the jet stream still taking the storm track well to the north. it looks like the jet will come south far enough for us to see a little bit of moisture pass through the bay area. even if it's only in the north bay. any improvement in the air quality with additional moisture coming through is definitely well received. we'll hit 64 degrees in places like san jose with an absence of fog now. could see the fog develop through the next few hours. so we're looking good here. temperatures today are also comfortable. 66 in santa theresa. 64 in pleasanton. i'll take you through the seven day outlook in my next report.

not so much the case in the north bay and especially along the peninsula. we are starting to watch the visibilities drop in san francisco. take it easy. give yourself time for the fog. high pressure is starting to drift a little bit to the east. onshore flow is kicking into high gear. we haven't had any moisture to add to the fog. we won't see it as widespread as tuesday. without the moisture the fog is not as thick or widespread. we have thick pockets in the northbay, but nothing you're not used to. and visibility is looking good elsewhere. temperatures in the 60s. 65 in fairfield. 65 in concord. 64 in san ramon. overall staying much above average for this time of year.

he was just 14 years old when the city supervisor walked in 1978 shooting and killing moscone and harvey milk. you may be able to help save the life of a 4-year-old san mateo boy in critical need of a bone marrow transplant. but because he's caucasian and asian he needs a multiethnic donor. a bone marrow drive will be held for him tomorrow. it's a simple cheek swab to determine if you may be a proper match for kyle. it will be in san mateo from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. >> more problems for netflix. the hits keep coming.

two ways to make it harder for netflix to get movies. first, hbo will reportedly no longer sell netflix dvds directly. netflix usually gets dvds from the publisher on huge spindles, but now they have to buy hbo content from retailers. just like you and i do. also, you're going to talk about warner brothers and the inable to get them to netflix. warner brothers says that it is going to delay the amount of time it takes to send movies to netflix from 28 days to 56 days. so once again another problem if you want your latest brad pitt movie. a.m.son getting heat for sending a bizarre message to users of the kindle fire offering a new service called kindle compass.

but over here, oakland, we can see the roadway just fine from the coliseum camera. reports in lanes. i haven't seen it. we have scanned it. >> thank you very much, mike. it's 5:# 1. san jose police investigating the first shooting of the year. it happened in east san jose around 8:30 last night. police say when they arrived on scene they found a man with gunshot wounds. he died at the hospital. >> call this one life in the digital lane. ford looking to go high-tech with a new research center here in the bay area. it's a move several au auto companies have already made. ford and other automakers envision a future where your car will be connected to the

down. the numbers are solid in all of them. so to recap, we got 200,000 jobs added in the month of december to the local -- or to the worldwide -- national economy. i'm so excited. good news on the job front. now meanwhile in san mateo county hundreds of health care workers may be out of jobs. let's go to marla tellez. she's live there. good morning, marla. >> reporter: scott. good morning. apparently i'm the bearer of the bad jobs news this morning. this place behind us here has been here for almost 50 years which makes this so much tougher. it could be shut down. for the hundreds of patients, no more home. most of the patients are elderly. we just got a peek inside. you can see many of the patients are wheelchair bound. county health officials say it comes down to the age of the building and finances.

the county cannot afford to upgrade the building, especially when they're facing $9 million in state budget cuts sochlt the county is recommending to the board of supervisors that it agrees to close the building. that would affect 230 nurses and 230 patients forced to find a new home. these long term care facilities are hard to come by. the board of supervisors is expected to vote on this issue next month, february 14th. now other layoff news in the bay area. the state insurance fund announced it's laying off 500 jobs here in the bay area by april. more than half of the jobs are in pleasanton. live in burlingame, i'm laura tellez. fremont will bid an emotional good-bye to the mayor. hundreds expected to attend this afternoon's public memorial service.

he served fremont for 35 years. he was police chief for 16 years before being elected to the city council and then elected mayor of 2004. he's credited with transformi i freemont from a sleepy suburb to a major player in the silicon valley. today's services will be held at 4:00. the family of a 5-year-old boy shot outside his parent's taco truck last week will attempt to say good-bye today. funeral services will be held in oakland. the young boy with with his parents when a man opened fire. gabriel was hit and killed. police are still looking for the shooter. it is 5:35 right now. and we've been spoiled all week long. not quite as sweet, right? >> not quite as sweet.

governor. huntsman says the voters in new hampshire don't want their vote taken for granted. also newt gingrich, who has said that i'm going to stay positive with my ads but challenge his record is questioning yet again whether or not romney is the conservative candidate, the bold conservative reagan candidate, as he's put it. but the big question, what's going to happen now with rick santorum in new hampshire and then onto south carolina? he calls that essentially a tie. he's not shying away from religion, calling himself the jesus candidate. >> big shoes to fill there. sticking with the gop as he campaigns, rick santorum is talking big changes that would dr directly affect california. he wants to shrink the court

system. the court of appeals in san francisco. it has the largest jurisdiction covering nine states. santorum wants to cut that down to two, just california and highway. many conservatives target the circuit court, accusing it of liberal bias. larry says even if the jurisdiction changes, the rulings won't. >> the ninth circuit is, in fact, the largest circuit court of the bunch, and so for that reason one could see why it might be a good idea to go ahead and cut it down. but that doesn't mean that the decisions coming from the ninth circuit are going to be different any way. >> it's the largest court of appeals in the entire country. it has the highest percentage of active judges appointed by democratic presidents. governor jerry brown is getting a lot of flak for his proposed budget. it includes a warning to approve higher taxes or see another cut

to education. the budget will come with cuts, mainly to cal works, med i-cal and support services. it provided voters approve his tax ines creases in november. >> that's what it takes to balance the budget. and that's assuming you get our tax revenues. >> republicans say the proposed budget is full of scare tactics. brown was supposed to unveil the new budget this coming tuesday. but it was accidentally posted yesterday. we hit the power ball of weather this weekend. sounds like more of a scratch off. >> yeah, but the wind dmending where you live will dictate how warm you'll end up today.

some cities will be just as warm. but the onshore flow is the reason for the cooling. you saw the fog. we did not have to deal with that on the golden gate bridge. take a look at how warm it was. 70-degree weather. today temperatures will be just about as warp, but not quite, especially by the coast with the additional fog settling in. watch out for thick pockets in there. by 8:00, 9:00 a.m., once the sun comes out we'll start to see it dissipate. the offshore flow we had, not the case today as high pressure is taking a trip to the east. just enough for the fog to settle in at the coastline. 3 degrees in san jose.

32 in novato and 46 in hayward. i've taken you from 70 to 67 in hayward. 65 in redwood city. san francisco, unfortunately you're done with the mid-60s with that additional cloud cover. let's take you through the next seven days, take you through your weekend. if you want to get outside and wash the car, you can do so comfortably. the rain won't do it for it. we get a chance of rain tuesday into wednesday, it will be very light and mostly in the north bay. the good news is we're looking at all your long range models. by the 15th of this month we're going to start to see more active weather pattern. we'll keep tracking that for you. they are starting to end their day and start their weekend for a lot of folks. remaining spots. those two onramps to southbound 680, those remain. the rest have cleared without incident and without major

slowing. to yum is just starting to pick up. we see slowing because of the increase and the amount of traffic out of the altamont pass. the bulk of the slowing, this blob of traffic over through livermore will see that settle at north vasco road all the way to the isabelle interchange over the next half hour. but we're looking at a nice drive through the dublin interchange as well. a nice drive through suno and to the south bay. the northbound routes are the commute directions here. no accidents or incidents. construction in that area only remains for the embarcadero road off ramp. we'll get a live look at the other side of the bay. send it back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. the woman accused of killing east bay nursing student michelle le is expected back in court today.

giselle esteban is supposed to enter a plea this morning. esteban has had multiple plea hearings scheduled and postponed. she vanished from hayward back on may 27th. her body was found in a nearby cannon in september. occupy oakland protesters tried unsuccessfully to occupy city hall. police arrested a dozen protesters and dismantled a tepee outside city hall on wednesday. in response demonstrators tried to occupy the mayor's office. they were stopped by police and city hall was closed. several protesters were later allowed into the building to speak with city officials. both groups say the meeting went well and a compromise is in the works. change is taking place. and we have choices about where we're going to go to do that. >> mayor quan did not attend the

welcome back, everyone. a live look outside on the east bay. 880 in oakland. traffic is picking up just a bit. we'll check the morning commute with mike coming up. a world war ii veteran and his wife can thank two complete strangers for saving their lives. they were inside their home when it caught fire thursday morning. a couple of guys immediately called 911 and then they saw the elderly couple trying to get out of the house. they ran to help them and move away from those flames. >> we're not firefighters or anything. but we know each other. we work with each other. and we were just in it. try to help somebody. that's what we have for people to rely on. >> big time hero representing the silver and black.

the home remains charred and many family heirlooms were lost including the air force uniform from world war ii. he hasn't seen the two men since, but definitely wants to give him a big time thank you. >> the window for the mavericks surf contest officially opens today. it will be u marked with a traditional prayer ceremony. but everything else will be different this year. at a meeting last night. mavericks organizer laid out new plans. they included restrictions on where spectators can watch the competition. it won't be from the beaches of the bluffs. people who try to get too close will meet a lot of sheriff deputies. >> and we're looking to have a safe event for the community and really protect our environment and the crumbling cliffs. >> organizers have until march 31st to call the contest. surfers in the community should get about 48 hours notice that the monster waves will be breaking. >> all morning long we've seen

this with the camera and the ipad. everybody has it a digital camera. maybe one they would be willing to lend their small child. but this, with the software, you can do fun things. i'm not thrilled with the camera itself. it's one of the first times we've seen the two do them together. >> i like your pictures. and that was pluto. we found a dog in new mexico with expensive taste. >> her wedding ring disappeared a few weeks ago. you know where this is going. they searched everywhere before they expected the basset hound.
