afternoon hours. we're watching the fog really develop in the north bay. give yourself extra time up there. by noon you're peeling off your first layer. rounding out the day in the mid 60s. we'll get to the forecast. first want to check your drive with mike. >> this week has seen a rebuilding of the commute. we're looking over here at the bay bridge and on this friday a mild backup for the cash lanes on the oakland side. >> there you go. thank you very much. >> it's 6:01 now. a south of market neighborhood in san francisco finally back to normal after a wild night that included gunshots for two members of the jury perched atop a rooftop. christie smith is live with details on what happened out there. >> good morning. it's really quiet out here. what a night here in san

francisco. police started getting multiple calls about shots komging from a building. san francisco police immediately shut down the neighborhood in all directions near 9th and brandon streets. they weren't sure where it was coming from or why someone was shooting in the first place. this is a busy area near a trader's joes. there are stores here and a freeway off ramp that had to be shut down. the shooter used a rifle, not necessarily targeting anyone. one worker described hearing the shots. >> i closed down the sho store and shots were fired off. heard about three shots and then kept walking a little further. heard about four more rounds go off.

zbloo once police had the building surrounded the shooting stopped. now within two hours two men came down a fire escape but not before asking police if they could have time for a smoke. they were detained. unfortunately no one was hurt. i'm christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you very much for the update. and right now police detectives are investigating the first san jose homicide of the year. it happened around 8:30 last night on alexander avenue. police arrived to find a money sufferg from a gunshot wound. he later died at the hospital. no suspect so far have been identified. the woman accused of killing nursing student michelle le could enter a plea today. this is the fourth time a

preliminary plea hearing was scheduled. it was postponed twice because of her hearing and once when she gave birth to her baby. >> police are looking for your help in solving a 5-year-old cold case. officers will talk about the homicide of alberto casiing llas. police seem to think the shooting happened after a dispute at a nearby nightclub. his mother will be at attendance in the news conference today. funeral services for 5-year-old oakland boy will be held today. someone shot gabriel martinez jr. outside of his taco truck. so far no arrests have been made in the shooting. today's funeral will be at saint elizabeth church in oakland.

hundreds of people also expected to attend the public memorial for fremont mayor bob wasserman. his service began in 1976 when he was appointed police chief. he was elected mayor in 2004. a long history. today's memorial starts at 4:00 this afternoon at the harbor light church on thornton in fremont. occupy protesters say they'll show support for two people arrested trying to occupy city hall. demonstrators storming the doors of the mayor's office. later several protesters were allowed inside to talk with the leaders. both groups say they thought the meeting went well and a compromise in the works. >> we're in a moment in the country where change is taking place. we have choices about where we're going to go to do that.

nine miles of visibility in san jose. dropping off to two and a half miles as the fog is creeping in through the delta. still holding onto good visibility through fair field and right by the water looking good. ten miles in san francisco with patches drifting around and nine miles in oakland. i think it will be the worst between 6:00 and 8:00. by 10:00 mostly clear conditions across the bay area. 44 in livermore. 38 in san jose. as a result, we're going to be three or four degrees cooler this afternoon. 55 at noon. 55 in santa rosa. making way to comfortable conditions. not as warm as yesterday. but not too bad.

if you are someone holding onto a season pass, we may get some snow. not your money back. but i'll let you know when we have a good chance of getting snow. i know you guys are getting angry at this point. but let's talk to mike and see any angry drivers. >> there probably are some angry drivers out. they' they're keeping it under control folks, i'm just the messenger. in the westbound commute direction. we see speeds into the 50s. should seize those turn from yellow to green in a few minutes. no major slowing throughout the maze and the east shore freeway. we have a fog advisory there. christina showed you that a minute ago. a quarter mile visibility across

welcome back, everybody. along with being friday, there's good news all around. and the latest federal jobs report. the labor department says employers added a net of 200,000 jobs in december. the national unemployment rate fell for the fourth straight month to 8.5%. now that's the lowest level since february of 2009. and it is the sixth straight month in which the economy added 100,000 jobs or more. now that hasn't happened since back in 2006. well, in san mateo county, budget cuts could force the closure of a long-term care facility that served some of the country's poorest residents. marla tellez is live in burli burlingame where hundreds could be out of a job. good morning, marla. >> reporter: jon, good morning. we're talking more than just layoffs. the patient who is call the

burlingame long term health care center home, they would be fair game, too. now the county is facing about $9 million in state budget cuts, and because they say it just does not make financial sense to upgrade the outdated 49-year-old building. so if the board of supervisors follows this recommendation, about 200 nurses and other workers would be let go, and the tougher news here, the 230 patients inside, many of them elderly, many of whom are wheelchair bound, would have to find a new facility capable of taking care of their needs. that's no easy task because there's only one other public facility in san mateo county that offers long-term care. bottom line, many of the patients will be forced to move out of the county. now the board of supervisors is expected to make a final decision next month on february 14th. the state kpen station insurance

fund just announced it's eliminated 500 jobs in the bay area by pral. most are in pleasanton, san jose, and santa rosa. wan to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she has our forecast for today. >> that's how long it looks like it will take before we see more of an active weather pattern in the bay trear. the models are picking up on that and they're remaining consistent with the pattern change i think we'll see three or four systems come through the bay area. hold onto your season pass and we'll get really nice weather in the second half of the month for skiers and snowboarders.

you don't have to worry about dodging showers or staying indoors huddled up next to the heater. 45 in san francisco. it's cold out there. grab a jacket. 43 in livermore this morning. little chilly in san jose. so throughout the day ha little bit more fog between now and 8:00 a.m. the future cast will start to clear. by about ten till noon, you'll see changes in the temperatures. high pressure moves to the east just a little bit. so onshore flow has increased. so this morning watch for fog until about 10:00 a.m. you can see we'll get a nice

cloud cover with moat of it confined to the bay. mostly clear conditions for the bay area. so fairfield, dropped you off from 5 yesterday. 60 degrees still holding onto the 60 stz even in san francisco. i'll take you through your seven-day outlook. we'll talk about the snow/rain chances coming up. e i'll take you the south bay. 101 northbound. but it took 20 minutes to clear from the system. it may be while we're seeing a lit slowdown approaching the area. this is that typical time when we see the area show a little bit of slowing even on a friday. so we'll contribute this to a higher volume of traffic as well. we had earlier construction that just cleared through palo alto. the southbound side will see slowing around sunrise.

that's where our guys took him. he told us that there's also construction equipment on the the side of the road. there is dust. the sun is coming up. listen to our general manager. because i try to. let's look at the other side of the bay with a live shot at the toll plaza with a nice, easy drive. look at that. no problems in the east shore freeway. looking good. still a lot of folks aren't coming back until monday. that's when we see more congestion in places like livermore. speeds on average about 55 right through livermore. and slowing through antioch as you might expect. a little slowing through pittsburgh and bay point. pretty typical pattern. back to you. >> opening ceremonies will be held for the mavericks surf

the same way you do. are you saying that to go into stores and buy them. >> really from the stores. back when i first went in the '90s they had a staff of people who would take dvds and unwrap them. these days netflix buys dvds from studios on huge spindles, except home box office, hbo, will reportedly no longer sell dvds directly to netflix. they usually get them in bulk. they will have to buy hbo content from retailers just like you and i do. warner brothers, meanwhile, says it will double the length of time it waits before offering dvds to netflix. warner brothers will make that 56 days. red box, netflix, all those guys in hopes that you'll buy the movie instead of waiting to rent it. the futures call for a solid

morning on the markets this morning. after a strong showing in the labor market. take a look. here are the numbers. in december we added 200,000 jobs. that reduces the unemployment rate to 8.5%. i think you'll hear a lot of the politicians talking about the 8.5% unemployment rate. what really counts is the plus 200,000. if you look back it was a plus 70, plus 80, that kind of thing. now plus 200. >> how reflective do you think that is of the holidays? >> we are seeing this adding to all kinds of different job categories. from transportation to education to medicine to even construction, which has been hard hit. so these are probably not. there are holiday jobs. but these are probably more widespread. >> that's the good news as well. thank you very much. 6:25. still to come, governor brown

right know we want to talk to mike about the drive. >> overall things are good. the friday, the week after new year's. so we're seeing the commute rebuilding. about a minute and a half ago i saw flashing lights and a large truck traveling westbound. that's the commute direction. i see flashing lights over on the right. it looks like the truck stopped just to the right of 92. there may be activity blocking the lane. we'll bring you an update in the next report. there may be slowing in that commute spot. it's 6:30 now. a south of market neighborhood in san francisco is back to normal after what was nothing short of a wild night of gunshots. allegedly from two men up on a rof rooftop. christie smith joins us live once more from jsan francisco with all the details on a bizarre night.

well, it's quiet right now. but at the height of the thing you couldn't get through here at all. reports of gunfire from a building here on ninth street. when police finally showed up they could hear, too, loud. and someone was spotted jumping over the rooftop. there were still workers in the area who heard it, too. some ran. some went back inside. overall, quite a night. >> officers heard multiple shots building fired still by these subjects. we quick ly contained the perimeter of the building. we blocked off the streets. a short time later the subjects did come out from the building and were detained. >> now those two men came down from a fire escape on one of one

of the buildings. they were detained. but apparently first they asked police if they could finish off the cigarettes they were smoking. fortunately no one was hurt. i'm christie smith. back to you. >> police in the south bay on the lookout for a motorist who killed a pedestrian in the crosswalk. the name of the man who died has not yet been released. right now the only information the investigators have is the vehicle was a black or dark blue mini van. governor jerry brown has a work for voters. the governor officially unveiling his budget yesterday

after it was prematurely leaked on the internet. the bottom line, a $9.2 million deficit. one year ago it was almost three times that amount. the target of the proposed cuts 1.4 billion less to cal workers. and $163 million in cuts for home support services. there will be no significant cuts to k through 12 if california voters approve a tax increase on the november ballot. >> that's what it takes to balance the budget. that's assuming we get our tex revenues. >> republicans calling the budget proposal scare tactics. ford matter company is looking to go very high-tech with a research center in silicon valley.

this move followin follows othe automakers that are already woshing on new automotive technology. they're expected to discuss the plan some time next week at the consumer electronics show in las vegas. an anti-stadium group in santa clara is gearing up for a weekend of protests against the 49ers' billion-dollar prajt. thea wab to get people to sign their petition. the group questions a decision by the santa clara authority to take out an $850 million loan to build the new 49 erz stadium. the city attorney are looking into whether it's legal. they're not sure if the issue is one that can be challenged by a referendum. >> for the team currently on the other side of the bay, that would be the raiders. they're getting something they haven't had in a long time. how about a general manager? they're close to hiring mck

mckenzie. he spent 18 years in green bay's front office. they served as team's manager until the death in october. our resident raiders fan, christina lauren with a look at our forecast for today. even now as all the nineers gloat about the playoffs, i'm sticking to my raider who is really blew it last sunday. we're looking good no matter what the plans are for the weekend. you can probably give your heater a break each afternoon. basically our lows are on on par with our seasonal averages. they are under pressure a little bit above average today and not quite as much as today. two and a half miles of visibility in santa rosa. pockets of fog drifts around since 8:00 a.m. then we'll see a lot of

clearing, especially 10:00. mostly clear conditions over the greater bay area. just low clouds around the local bridges and the bay. by noon we're going to jump up to 57 in fairfield. 55 in livermore. 50 in san jose. 66 degrees later on in livermore. even santa rosa is staying nice and warm with the chilly start. 64 degrees later today. so we'll talk about when the next rain chance arrives. we'll talk about what that means for the sierra nevada, and of course, we have the weekend numbers as well. stay tuned. let's check in with mike on the drive. i've been trying to figure out what is going on for highway 92. let's show you the current view. saw some flashing lights over on the right side of the westbound traffic flow. and we saw a good deal of backup. just in, a report of a disabled

vehicle over at foster city boulevard. but it may p be what we are watching on the flat section. if it is, the flashing lights have just cleared in the last few seconds. expect a little slowing on highway 92 for the time being. we don't see any drama off 880 with a light volume of traffic there. an easy approach at the bay bridge shows you no problems and no metering lights at the toll plaza itself. we have slowing still westbound highway 4 out of antioch. speeds in 20s and below at times. pittsburgh and bay point show the 40s with the yellow chiplettes. joran van der sloot stands trial for murder today. what his attorneys are asking for coming up. before that we have a live report from washington with more on the jobs report that shows, well, a lot of new jobs out e.

the nation's unemployment went down from 8.6% to 8.5%. it's what economists predicted. but they did not predict the number of new jobs related. a lot of it retail and holiday jobs. now what we really need to see the rate get under 8% are more manufacturing and construction jobs. we're seeing weekly claims goes ch critics say it has to do with the fact that a lot of people are dropping out of the system. no longer looking for work, making the claims or ineligible for them. in california the situation is much worse. 11.3% unemployment. moody's is predicting job growth over the next year, specifically in the bay area of just over 1.5%. and they say the top three areas for job growth are going to be construction, a big one nationwide and in california.

6:44 right now. we want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> we made it to the weekend. so we're already doing well in that department. we're also doing well in the weather department. mid-60s inland and low 60s at the coast. san francisco getting unseasonably warm weather. first week of january is going to go down as one for the record books. we tied records yesterday.

broke records even. today not quite ads warm. that's one of the reasons why we have fog out there this morning. it's not that dense just yet. we'll continuously update you throughout the "today show." 40 in santa cruz. and we do have some fog out there. mostly up in the north bay, but you might find pockets drifting around the peninsula and creeping in through the delta this morning. as we head throughout the day, it all works out like this. high pressure finally moves east just a little bit. it's the offshore down sloping winds that kept our temperatures up in near record territory. we do have a little bit more cloud cover to deal with probably until 8:00 a.m. by 10:00 your future cast shows you we get a lot of clearing. most of the cloud cover sitting over the bay at the time.

then by noon mostly clear over the bay area. temperatures work out like this today. 64 in fremont. 65 degrees, not too shabby. want to get outdoors and wash your car, do the gardening, i highly recommend it. the showers we go hado have are looking all that promising. another round of round thursday and friday. some mild slowing all the way pass the airport. speeds into the 50s. right around allen rock we're

registering at 37. there's a good deal of slowing just around the intersection. we have highway 85, the southbound direction toward highway 101. we have a disabled vehicle getting cleared from the road. likely getting pushed off there at the offramp. but no major slowing at the scene. that's a nice easy drive throughout the south bay. we have a smooth flow of traffic through san mateo. both directions at 101. we should see a good amount of fog, and that will burn off eventually. and we're looking at 101 off interstate 80. the skyway, there's a disabled vehicle in the third lane so that will present a distraction. you'll have to watch the slowing, but no major issues out of the city to the oakland side. getting in, the live look tout there, we show you the bay bridge toll plaza. and a good backup forming in the cash lanes from time to time.

but prepare for it. >> all right, we will be prepared. in san mateo county hundreds of nurses could be out of a job after the proposal of a long-term health care county. marla tellez is live in burlingame with the not such great details. good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning. this place has been around almost 50 years which makes this news even tougher if the long-term care center is shut down. this means lost jobs and essentially lost homes for hundreds of patients here. many of whom spend their final days here. now we just got a look inside, and you can see that many of the patients here are wheelchair bound. it comes down to the age of the vehicle and finances. they cannot afford to upgrate the building when the county is facing # million in state budget cuts. so the county's recommendation is to close it all the glitch

here is these long-term care facilities are hard to come by. there is just one there's only one other in the county. so many of the patients would have no other choice to move out of the county. we're live in burlingame. i'm marla tellez. jon and marla? >> reporter: san francisco police have two men in custody this morning after a bizarre scene south of market overnight. they got the call about shots fired on ninth street in between harrison and bryant just after 11:00. when officers arrived they heard more shots and set up a

perimeter. they think one of the men that's being held fired a rifle from the building in the area. police closed streets nearby the scene until early this morning once they determined that everything was clear. >> 6:49 right now. actually, 6:50 on the nose. and police are looking for more possible victims of san francisco school bus driver accused of molesting two young girls. during the investigation police say another girl with special needs also told them she was the victim. he worked as a school bus driver in san francisco from 1994 to april of 2011. police are still looking for more victims. >> it's 6:50. the woman accused of killing the mother of her partner plans to plead not guilty. sagal sadig appeared in court

with a cast on her left arm. prosecutors say her partner was trying to end their three-year marriage. there might be motive for the murder. sadig is being held without bail and has been ordered by the judge to stop trying to contact her partner from jail. the man walked in around 12:45 yesterday afternoon. the bank robber made off with more than $3,000. occupy oakland protesters will rally to support those arrested in this week's protest. they tried unsuccessfully to occupy city hall. they arrested two people for trying to force their way through the doors. later several protesters were allowed to meet with city officials and they say a compromise is in the works.

police and protesters have been at odds since the dismantling of an occupy tepee. good news for america's cup organizers, they hit the first major fund raising goal. and that's to cover san francisco's coast in hosting the sailing race. supervisors agreeing to host the 2013 america's cup on the condition that no taxpayer money be used. this morning the san francisco chronicle reporting race organizers have reached their first year fund raising goal of $12 million. the committee pledging to raise $32 million over three years. exhibition races are skenled to kick off in august. that will be followed by finals in july of 2013. it's 6:52. it's another sign of the brain power of the silicon valley. ford announcing it will join other automakers opening a high-tech research center in palo alto. you know ford along with

automakers envision a day where the car will be a sensor providing realtime info about road conditions to you and other drivers on the road. it will be based somewhere in palo alto not far from stanford university. they also plan to team up with local start-ups to help bring wireless connectivity, cloud computing and cleaner technology to the automobile. we've already got a glimpse of that future with ford. already offering drivers mobile applications. now the new location they describe as being that of a start-up firm for it to be offering up more details at the consumer electronics show in las
