out of san francisco where a townhouse fire left at least one person dead. the two-alarm fire started around 5:00 this morning at a townhouse community at alves and tammy circle in the city's bay point area. firefighters have extinguished the blaze but smoke is coming from several buildings. two units were seriously damaged. we are following this story and will bring you more information as it becomes available. two children were hospitalized when their family car and another car crashed on highway 84 near sonole. this happened around 11:00 on 84 near the 680 interchange. the two cars collided between the east and westbound lanes. roads reopened after midnight. the children were hospitalized along with at least another adult. their conditions have not been released. the cause of the crash is under

investigation. a crash between an airplane and catering truck grounded nearly 400 travelers at san francisco international airport at 7:00 last night as the china airlines flight was preparing for takeoff. the catering truck hit the plane on the runway hard enough to damage the plane. the flight was canceled. fortunately, no one was hurt. the cause of the crash is under investigation. a burglary spree in the south bay that could serve as a warning in neighborhoods all around the bay area. morgan hill police sea say they honed in on one neighborhood stealing. police suspected the burglars are so efificient that they may be casing the homes of live among the victims. >> you can see they split the screen. >> and the handle they broke off the other side. >> an attempt to break into nikki's home on san ramon drive in december forced her and her

fiancee to install an alarm system. >> i noticed a couple items were missing. >> earlier that day, someone had broken into their suv unlocked parked on the driveway. >> we told our neighbor and when we came home, she came back and said, hey, i wanted to let you know i got broken into. >> the alarm will go off. >> reporter: jim ruis is paying extra attention to his security after a break-in two-doors down new year's eve. in all, neighbors here have reported eight burglaries in just the last four weeks. it is rare here in morgan hill and even more bizarre, they are happening in the middle of the day. >> late morning hours or early afternoon, seemed to be the most prevalent time for the burglaries. >> any idea why those times? >> no. we have no idea. >> investigators have an idea about who is behind the

corridor. two were grabbed from behind. a an anonymous identified the person of interest. the 32-year-old suspect is charged with numerous counts of sexual assault, kidnapping and robbery. if you have any additional information, you are urged to contact the police department. a map is in custody charged with sexually assaulting a customer. the 55-year-old is accused of assaulting a 29-year-old woman. he worked at this salon for five years and other salons before that. other victims are encouraged to come forward. a san francisco assembly woman convicted of shoplifting. a judge sentenced mary hiashi to three years of probation after pleading no-contest to

shoplifting. her lawyer told the judge na a benign brain tumor affected her decision-making the day she shoplifted from san francisco' nieman niemann marcus. she walked out about $2500 of goods. she doesn't have to step down from the state assembly but she can't run again. she will serve three years probation and must stay 50 feet away from that union square niemann marcus store. san francisco attorney is deciding whether to file charges against politician. they went to his home after a neighbor called to report an incident. his wife issued a statement saying that the allegations against her husband are false and she has never been abused. he was elected as sheriff last november and is supposed to be

good saturday morning. seven days into the new year. are you sticking with your resolutions? you have some leeway, right? another step forward for the san francisco 49ers and their dream of a south bay stadium. great america is agreeing to give up one parking lot for the stadium and its main lot to allow fans to park within walking distance of that stadium. the deal will cost the 49ers $12.5 million. the city council is expected to approve the deal on tuesday. officials say they can now start

building the stadium within a year so long as the nfl approves $150 million for the plan, which is expected. oakland, the u.s. hot spot for travelers. the only u.s. city to top "the new york times" prestigious list to visit in 2012. the only places that linked higher, pan aman, helsinki, myanmar and london. oakland was number five. kimberly terry headed to oakland and say they are happy oakland is getting positive notoriety. >> i am a little surprised, nothing against oakland, number five destination, i wouldn't have expected that. >> reporter: yes, that's right, oakland is named as top tourist destination by "the new york times." it is sandwich between london and tokyo on the list of 45 places to go in 2012.

the difference there is the fact the wind is starting to pick up. that warmer air loft mixing down towards ground level in fairfield north at 6. we will start to see more of this around the rest of the bay area. this is the coldest part of the day. we should see temperatures warming quickly as we head towards lunchtime. the hills will turn gusty, dry winds, 30-35 miles an hour. highs in the 60s. as the air dries out, the due points drop like a rock. that will support colder morning temperatures once the winds back off. how dry it has been as we approach close to halftime on a rain season. 20% to 30% of average bay area wide. no signs will be adding to that today. those offshore winds, what we have today is creating the winds, an area of low pressure diving down east of the sierra and high pressure nudging down behind it. the pattern we have seen from december into january where we

get these north winds. we haven't had any rain. fire danger is unusually high. we are going to see a fire weather watch for most of the coastal range hills north of the bay area. a red flag warning. speaking of how dry, this model will show us rain or clouds showing up in wlit. you can see how the moisture is really being taken away from the bay area. heading into sunday, not much in the way of coastal fog or any high clouds. the only chance of showers, late monday into tuesday. this system, like the one we are seeing now is going to drop east of lake tahoe. maybe showers north of ukiah. those going to be it. temperatures around the bay area. mostly low to mid-60s around the inner bay, places like fairfield and santa rosa, the places already warming up. the air moves from higher

can you guess where? you can't see much, because it is foggy there. a little bit of fog in san jose. rob says mostly clear and mostly chilly around the bay area. thanks so much for joining us on this saturday morning. i'm kris sanchez. meteorologist, rob mayeda is here with the forecast that is very cold. >> and still a little bit of patchy fog. >> right there before you head up into fremont. you will not find the fog but breezy conditions. interesting temperatures this morning. 30, napa. not too far away. 25 degrees warmer in fairfield. that almost looks like a morning low and high side by side. the winds are starting to pick up. what's left of the fog, that's going to get mixed out as the dryer air starts to drop down. as early as lunchtime, 50s to near 60. around santa rosa and fairfield, mid to upper 60s. lo he to mid around the rest of the bay. very dry. this will throttle up fire danger out towards the sierra where a red flag danger is up. this is very unusual for

state's three strikes law. it landed him in the jail. once there, he got into a scuffle with a prison guard and now faces a felony assault charge. his attorney says he is homeless and mentally ill and deprived of his psych medication while in jail. he has a prior criminal record. now, the prosecutor could decide to charge johnson with his third strike, which can carry a life sentence. >> then, because he doesn't have his medication, gets into a fight with a guard and now faces three strikes. i think that's not only terribly unjust to mr. johnson but it is terribly unjust to all of us. >> critics of the current three strikes law are currently gathering signatures for a november ballot measure which would reduce sentences for third strikers who commit nonviolent crimes. johnson is said to be arraigned on monday. a san jose family has a new place to call home. a couple of weeks before

sunrise. the weather headline is cold weather. if you are headed out for your walk, wear some gloves. >> for the first time in a long time, numbers came out on unemployment that made people take notice, the biggest monthly increase in jobs in four years. the other big number, the unemployment rate, a three-year low, 8.5% with job gains across the economy. nbc's tom costello reports. >> reporter: for countries still struggling to climb out of the great recession of 2008, welcome news. those 200,000 new jobs added in december were the sixth month in a row of 100,000 new jobs. unemployment rates ticked down from 8.7% in november to 8.5% in december. >> a lot of families are still having a tough time. a lot of small businesses are still having a tough time. we are starting to rebound. we are moving in the right direction. >> what kind of jobs were added?

nice, big, televisions this morning. look closely at the flag there. we have some offshore winds. notice the direction it is pointing. that is a sign not only of dry weather despite what the calendar is trying to tell you in january. we could see temperatures warming as much as the upper 60s in parts of the bay area. patchy fog out there. the winds in san jose are above this fog layer. they will eventually mix down. 39 degrees, san jose. 38, oakland. the wind starting to pick up. northeast at 3:00. you are going to want to crank up the heater. 33, santa rosa. no signs of the north wind. this is where the wind is starting first out towards solano county. northwest winds in santa rosa. we will see that temperature jump a good 10 degrees probably in the next hour or so as the

warmer air starts to mix on down. we still have watches of fog around the east bay. that will be gone as the winds continue to increase this afternoon with an area of low pressure heading off towards the rockies. this has been the pattern across the bay area for december into janua january. these offshore winds coupled with the fact we haven't had any rain for the last three weeks. we will continue to see very dry conditions and an unusually high fire danger risk, especially around the sierra. red flag warnings on the west slope of the sierra. you hardly see that in january. you are normally talking about winter storm warnings. windy and dry. we will see the humidity levels drop during the day. wind should ease off overnight. also, with the drying of the air, it is going to support some very chilly temperatures here for the next few mornings. notice the futurecast. clouds and rainfall, nothing out here. the offshore winds, we are going

mavericks surf contest with the contest window now open. organizers say they plan to ban spectators from the event. >> safety has become the forefront of the mavericks invitational. the last contest in february of 2010 is remembered not so much for the surfing as the massive rogue wave that pummeled spectators on the beach. >> we are closing the beach and the bluff because you really can't see the contest from the beach. to put all those people there, it is a dead end. >> instead, organizers will create a surfing village near the pillar point harbor with a projection screen for people to watch the action. >> probably safer from what happened last year, people getting washed into the lagoon. >> there we go. >> reporter: he will have to keep his lens cap on the day of the contest, he isn't that bothered. >> so much easier, so much better, so much cleaner just to

a rare sighting in california. a wild gray wolf. kristen reports he is on the prowl for a mate. >> reporter: in a way, it is a love story. >> he is probably looking for a mate and has to travel a long way. we have so few wolves in oregon. >> reporter: a lone wolf, one of 29 in oregon, heard the call of the wild and left his pack for a solo trip south. >> reporter: journey is his name after being tracked 1,000 miles over mountains and highways all the way to california. the first known wild gray wolf in the golden state since 1924.

>> it's exciting to know that they are actually coming back into the wild. >> reporter: for almost 90 years, the only wolves here in california have been like this, raised in captivity. these guys are used in movies. there is a new star in town. journey has picked up quite a fan club on social media. the contest to name him sought admissions from as far away as finland. there is even paparazzi. the only picture snapped by a motion-activated camera. his life isn't all glamour. he set out looking for love. >> he is probably very lonesome. i bet you where he is at he howls and then listens. >> reporter: wolves were reintroduced in the west in the 1990s after almost being hunted to extinction. >> journey's trip is only possible because we have the strong environmental laws and shows how far we have come. >> reporter: how far will he go on his epic quest for love? if he can stay safe from hunters
