7:15 am
conditions. we have some offshore winds. look at our temperatures. 50s around san francisco and concord. the breeze is still going around the bay area. 30 now in gilroy. it's those northeast winds through napa keeping things quite dry this morning but getting us off to a warmer start to the day. it's like a running start for our temperatures. more 60s today, but a chance of getting close to 70 in a few spots. if we do that, that could mean more records around the bay area. tonight, as the winds are definitely light tonight into tomorrow morning, we'll see 230 to start the day. a slight chance of a few showers getting into tuesday. the last time we've had significant rain around the bay air yarks you have to go back to november 24th. this is the reason why the hillsides are all brown. we haven't had any significant rain. only 19% of average for our snow pack. hopefully we see this change. this is the wettest time of year
7:16 am
here, as you can see. we really need to catch up in the rainfall department. not going to do it today, but maybe a little later this week. right the now you see the north winds around the east bay hill tops. we have high pressure building in, holding off these incoming systems and giving us these windy conditions, which picked up yesterday. it will probably stick around through about lunchtime today. as the winds go offshore, they warm up and dry out. that's the reason why fire danger is high, unlike our typical marine air, which spills in from the coast and brings in the humidity level. we're seeing the opposite effect. fire danger, unfortunately higher than it should be for january. we have them up for this morning. we should see those winds backing off into the afternoon. the chance of showers for tuesday. notice it looks like the bay area may miss out. there's a chance of snow in the sierra on tuesday. the models are having a tough time with this system. piece of energy also drops down the coast. as we go into maybe friday and saturday, that low could swing back to the bay area.
7:17 am
hopefully that happens because we certainly do need the rain. today, we're talking 60s. maybe close to 70 in mountain view. 68 in san jose. mid 60s around the east bay hills. the sierra, windy and dry. seven-day forecast shows a bit of a cooldown for tomorrow. tuesday, slight chance of showers. stay tuned. maybe next saturday a few scattered showers. still, overall a dry-looking seven-day forecast. kris. >> thank you very much. even if the forecast doesn't reflect it, we know it's january because it's time for decision 2012. we're two days away from new hampshire's first in the nation primary. republican presidential candidates are debating right now in new hampshire. in last night's debate, it was rick perry who made perhaps the biggest surprise when he announced what he would do with the war in iraq if he were president. here's a look. >> reporter: as they met in new hampshire days before the vote, the republican candidates debated who would create for u.s. jobs, like the 200,000 in

doing pretty well catching up on mitt every single day. >> reporter: but romney's far ahead and got through another debate relatively unscathed. steve handlesman, nbc news, new hampshire. >> as steve mentioned, mitt romney continues to lead the polls. a survey released friday has romney ahead of his closest rival by better than a two-to-one margin. for more, let's bring in political analyst larry gerston. let's talk quickly about rick perry. he said he would send troops back into iraq. is that going to get him traction? >> it's going to get him traction with the part of the republican party that's military oriented. there are people who would like to see that. i think most americans are weary of war. but the problem always is going from the primary to the general. the voters who turn out at primary are much more
7:20 am
conservative. there will be a larger cohort there. >> all right. well, let's talk about whether or not the deal -- what happens on tuesday in new hampshire, first primary in the nation nation, will seal the deal. >> maybe not seal the deal, but romney's victory, if there is one, and many think there will be, will probably up the ante. take a look at that poll for a second, kris. we see what's going on here. you can see that romney enjoys a nice lead. no question about it. 42%. ron paul remaining strong. iowa is more of his kind of state. rick santorum bumped up more than twice as last week. john huntsman at 12%. that's his make or break state. now, a couple things to bear in mind here. first, romney's lead is solid. no question about it. but not quite as solid a it was two weeks ago when he was near 50%. all, ron paul.
7:21 am
this guy ron paul, he seems so out of step with so many people. he continues to show strength to. santorum, nice bounce. the question is, is there enough time in that short week for santorum to come up? the conclusion here is, romney looks good. the situation remains fluid. >> okay. every time we go to these pry primaries, we say, we're in the west, what does this have to do with us? is this more reflective of us here in california than what happens in iowa? >> a scosh. in some ways, some of eastern new hampshire, of course, is a bedroom community for the boston area. that's the suburbs. the suburban vote is very important across the country. particularly here in california. there's no question about that. oh, my goodness. on the other hand, we have other issues here. new hampshire's about 90% white. you can see how that goes in california, which is less than 50% white. 99% white in iowa. about 76% nationwide.
7:22 am
why do we care about that? just for a second. we care about that because we know that latinos, african-americans, asian-americans, all went disproportionately democratic, heavily so, in 2008. it's not really an accurate perception, if you will, of the country as a whole. new hampshire also has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. just over 5%. contrast that with california, which is over 11%. that said, it's not very reflective of the way the nation is as a whole. but still, it's giving us more insight than we would have had in iowa. >> okay. you know, we started off this talk with the fact that mitt romney looks like he is going in and will likely come out, but surprises happen. right? we could see a surprise. >> this is a volatile election year. there is no question about it. so things can happen. one of which, by the way, could happen on that debate on "meet the press." it's the last debate. they only had two. it's coming up this morning. one out of six, as of last

friday, new hampshire voters was undecided. that's a large number. that's 16%. if that group coalesces, it's a tight race. every one of these primary states has its own things. they have their own things that make it different. in the case of new hampshire, you can go ahead and cross over. that is to say a democrat can voted for the republican primary. look at kind of mischief the democrats can make if they win. oh, okay's going to win. we know that. let me vote for candidate x, y, or z. suddenly, an undesirable candidate may surface and do very, very well against the popular mitt romney. put those things together and, yeah, things can iffy. if it romney nails down a solid

win on tuesday, wow, he will have taken a major step forward toward nailing down the nomination. he still has south carolina. no question about that. let me tell you, winning two in a row, not bad. even if the first one was by eight votes. >> but this is where we start to see candidates kind of trickle out and say, i can't recover from this. >> yeah, michele bachmann. rick perry trickled out and trickled back in. i think there will be another dwindling. >> thank you very much, larry. you can always get larry's political insight any time of day on nbcbayarea.com. just do a little search for prop zero. don't forget to watch the "meet the press" debate happening today. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a surprise delivery at a texas zoo. this baby rhino is making headlines, but her mother's atin.tog w youhy 'lwel tell you why. -dad, why are you getting that? -that's my cereal.
