let's begin this thursday morning in new hampshire with the presidential primary there. our savannah guthrie is there in manchester. good morningsing, savannah. >> reporter: good morning, matt. mitt romney has a double digit advantage in the polls here. the other candidates fear an early sweep of iowa and then new hampshire would make him unstoppable. so the attacks are intensifying and striking at romney's business experience. romney touts his experience as a ceo. now his rivals are trying to portray him as the kind of guy that would fire you. >> thank you. bye-bye. >> what did she say, governor? what did you say to her? >> she said she's with me. >> reporter: in a mad dash of 11th hour campaigning that turned into chaos in one case. >> there is a lot of congestion. >> reporter: republican candidates monday piled on the frontrunner, mitt romney, who provided a huge opening, discussing poor service he perceived in the past from insurance companies. >> i like being able to fire

people who provide services to me. you know, if someone doesn't give me the good service i need i want to get somebody else to provide that service to me. >> reporter: romney's opponents were quick to pounce. >> governor romney enjoys firing people. i enjoy creating jobs. >> reporter: rick perry's website offered a custom ringtone. >> i like being able to fire people. i like being able to fire people. >> reporter: born into a wealthy family romney raised eyebrows for saying he worried in his life about losing his job. >> there were a couple of times i wondered whether i was going to get a pink slip. >> reporter: campaigning in south carolina, perry delivered a blistering retort, ripping romney's tenure at the head of the investment firm bane capital. >> i have no doubt he worried about pink slips -- whether he would have enough to hand out because of bane capital's killing all of the jobs.
7:05 am
i'm sure he was worried he'd run out of pink slips. >> everything go to the people. >> reporter: and a super pac supporting newt gingrich plans to air a 30-minute film on mitt romney's experience. >> a story of greed, playing for a quick buck. a group of corporate raiders led by mitt romney, more ruthless than wall street. >> reporter: are you feeling momentum now? >> i'm feeling energy on the ground. >> reporter: jon huntsman who has bet it all on a strong showing here was eager to go on the attack. >> if you like to fire people regardless of the context is, combined with pink slips. >> reporter: do you think he's out of touch or a flawed messenger? >> i think the combination of some of those messages would strike a lot of americans as being not in contact. and would not encourage a lot of voters, i don't think. >> reporter: not every candidate took the bait. >> do you think that's a legitimate line of attack. >> i'm not taking shots at him for that. if capitalism is constructive as
7:06 am
well as destructive, and i don't see that as necessary. i think that he has a lot more about the record as governor to talk about than the record at bane capital. >> reporter: romney tried to brush off the criticism. >> i understand in politics people will grasp out of anything taken out of context and to make it something that it is not. that is the, by the way, nature of the process, and i have to been a adult about it and understand it goes with the territory. >> reporter: this morning the democratic national committee is using romney's statement without context in an ad. with romney so far ahead in the polls, this may turn out to be a race for second. but new hampshire is known for the surprises. remember when then senator hillary clinton was polling behind and came back to win. >> savannah, thank you. former utah governor john huntsman is also in manchester. good morning to you. >> ann, it's a pleasure being

obama, the bottom line is you've got to convince people who voted for barack obama last time to vote for you. that's the mathematical reality. we have taken a message to people in new hampshire. we have republicans, independents and democrats. the message of tackling the economic deficit and tackling this press deficit. we have people coming to us from all over the spectrum. that is what is going to prove mathematically electable. you have to have math in your favor to beat barack obama longer term. that means you have to reach beyond the republican party to get it done. >> let's look at the math. right now according to polls you're ahead of -- behind romney by 20 points. behind paul by at least 7 points. gingrich is nipping at your heels. if you don't come in the top three in new hampshire, are you out of the race? >> i don't want to play the expectation game. all i can tell you is new hampshire doesn't like to be told for whom to vote.

7:13 am
>> he doesn't play a big role in the campaign but the uncertainty, the shake-up within the administration, as we are nine months away from the election, does it just look bad? >> it is a -- i'm having a little problem hearing you, matt. but it is dysfunction. it comes on the heels of the book about the first lady and relationships in the white house. there is a campaign team for the president. any kind of dysfunction is an unwanted story. they have enough of a challenge facing this economy and this kind of condition as they move forward. >> david gregory and chuck todd both in place in new hampshire. a busy day ahead. guys, thank you very much. >> thank you, matt. >> going to be interesting. in the meantime, let's go to natalie morales at the news desk for a check of the other top stories. hey, natalie. >> good morning, everyone. mahmoud ahmadinejad in a meeting defend i defending his country's nuclear program with venezuelan

♪ teach your children well >> today's moms is brought to you by vick's nature fusion cough and cold medicine -- powerful multisymptom relief flavored with real honey. >> time for "today's moms" and the touchy topic of spanking. you might be surprised to hear 4 out of 5 parents still spank their kids. and you might be one of them as well. >> is spanking the dirty little secret most parents don't talk about? the editor and chief of parents magazine is here, and dr. janet taylor is a psychiatrist. welcome, ladies. >> thank you. >> there's a stat that says 81% of parents admit to spanking and i think it's 22% do it at least once a week. >> yes, from our parents.com survey we just did. we were sort of surprised to see that 81%, but it's actually very consistent with what other national studies have found.

the 1 in 5 parents who are hitting their kids once a week was also really stunning. >> did you break it down to what spanking meant to those different people? does it mean a swat? does it mean -- >> a belt? >> hitting your child. >> hitting your child. >> the definition of spanking, whether you hit with an open hand or an object, a switch or a belt, it's all considered spanking. >> spanking is about physical discipline, and not to vilify parent who is spank, even though it's not optimal, as we know, it's important to know there can be long-term consequences from spanking, and most parents done understand that. >> if your child is about to dart out into the street and he freaks you out and you grab his handle and your adrenaline is pumping, you're upset, you swat him on the bottom. that seems like part of parenting. you get frustrated sometimes and you get a little freaked out. >> true. if you look at the data, you'll see 1 in 4 parents who say they hit their kids describe it as "just losing it," they lost it in that moment. you need to look at how to do it
10:48 am
differently the next time. >> to understand the context, the age of the child, a 2-year-old, spanking may not have any consequence for them. the key point is discipline is about teaching. it's not about punishment and control. sometimes in the heat of the moment we lose that, but the key focus is to think about what am i teaching my child by grabbing them or spanking them or picking up something, heaven forbid that i want them to learn? we all want to keep our kids safe. >> so many single moms out there, though, one-parent family, and they ear exhausted, they're doing everything, and what do you say to someone like that who says, really? you have no idea what my life is like. >> i think we say we understand your pain, however, if your child is under 5, spanking is is not what you need to do. it's about time-outs, whether you agree with them or not, it's about understanding developmentally that a 1 1/2-year-old to 2-year-old is going to cry, may hit, may smack you, they're not hurting you on purpose. you have to understand them developmentally. there's a responsibility to being a parent whether you're a single mom or not. >> a child who is hit is more

likely to turn around and hit. you're only going to make the problem worse by hitting them. >> a generational thing. all of us were talking, oh, yeah, i got spanked. now it's such a taboo. it doesn't feel like this group of us has grown up to be such terrible, you know, aggressive people. >> right. there are pretty consistent patterns generally generati generationally, but people who were spanked as children are more likely to spank. there are regional differences. in the south in the united states, people are more likely to spank than in the north or the west. >> and economic. >> definitely. it's about balance. if you were spanked and five minutes later your mom was giving you a hug and baking you cookie, when you have warmth as a parent, that can balance that. if you're continuously spanked and talked to negatively, you'll be more likely to become aggressive and not understand what the parameters really are. >> i'm going out this weekend to phoenix, arizona, for an event for child health, which battles child abuse. when people lump that kind of thing in with true child abuse
10:50 am
that we see there at child help, it's frustrating. we should keep very clear about what we're talking about. >> with child abuse, the intent is to hurt. >> yeah. >> with spanking, most of us do not want to hurt our chern. we just want to keep them safe and teach them a lesson. >> great discussion. >> it could escalate. >> yes. >> not the last time we're going to discuss this. thanks, ladies. up next, julie the accidental housewife, shows you how to get rid of those pet scents. you know what we're talking about. that's henry.

and shedding and all that stuff. >> this is henry. >> the things to remember, the rules of paw, i call them, a clean carpet because you don't want that stuff to saturate. you want to soak it all up because if it gets underneath, you're going to have an even bigger problem under the padding. and you want to be sure that you clean and deodorize because those little spots they smell, they'll go again. you want to use ammonia because that's what marks them. the ammonia will track them to p pee again. >> don't use ammonia. >> right. i get tongue-tied. i'm getting on my knees because that's how i do this. i love to save money. good, old white vinegar is terrific. and baking soda. the first thing, like i said, is you want to take a microfiber cloth or paper towel so this way you won't -- if you lose paper towels, no laundry. you get up as much of the liquid
10:55 am
as you can. by the way, very important that you get what's underneath if you can. >> you try. >> after that, you saturate it with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar, okay, and just get it really wet. let that dry for a while. again, what you want to do here, and you shouldn't be drinking when you do this, is -- >> my mai tai. >> the dog. if you would stand on here, okay, and -- >> in high heels like julie does. >> like this. or if you want to sit and read another book, you can do that. >> whooo what did you put under there? plastic bag? >> you want to do that because you don't want to ruin your books. this will prevent the moisture getting on your books. five to ten pounds of weight to get the moisture out. >> leaving the cloth down? >> good time of year because we've gained some weight. good time to stand on them. after that, you take baking soda and you put it onto the wet stuff here and let that dry overnight, because that will

neutralize the odor. then vacuum that baby up. >> okay. >> he looks so good in your arms. things you can use from your bathroom cabinet. rubbing alcohol. test the area of the carpet because it could stain. listerine is a natural odor absorber. also rubbing alcohol is another great idea or hydrogen peroxide. >> one minute. >> ultraviolet. if you have it, if your dog has gone somewhere else, you want to be able to find it. >> like an old stain. >> black light. pet smart has these. shedding. >> you can check your teeth. >> i like using obviously something i have around the house, a paint roller brush, double stick tape, back and forth, clean you up. also my rubber gloves -- sorry -- >> you can use a roller? >> you can. but also, odor absorber, cat litter, believe it or not, is terrific, not only for cat, put a little underneath your pillows
10:57 am
and it will absorb the odor. and of course dryer sheets are great, but put them in an envelope because sometimes they might stick. and lastly -- >> does henry drink wine? >> he does. we want to save our house and sanity. this will help save pets. it's called les companion wine. a percentage goes to charity. >> thank you, sweetheart. >> tomorrow we'll talk about chelsea handler's new show.
