>> today's moms is brought to you by vick's nature fusion cough and cold medicine -- powerful multisymptom relief flavored with real honey. >> time for "today's moms" and the touchy topic of spanking. despite the warnings and the criticism, you might be surprised that four out of five parents still spank their kids. and you might be one of them as well. >> is spanking the dirty little secret most parents don't talk about? the editor and chief of parents magazine is here, and dr. janet taylor is a psychiatrist. welcome, ladies. >> thank you. >> there's a stat that says 81% of parents admit to spanking and i think it's 22% do it at least once a week. >> yes, from our parents.com survey we just did.
2:54 am
we were sort of surprised to see that 81%, but it's actually very consistent with what other national studies have found. the 1 in 5 parents who are hitting their kids once a week was also really stunning. >> did you break it down to what spanking meant to those different people? does it mean a swat? does it mean -- >> a belt? >> hitting your child. >> hitting your child. >> the definition of spanking, whether you hit with an open hand or an object, a switch or a belt, it's all considered spanking. >> spanking is about physical discipline, and not to vilify parent who is spank, even though it's not optimal, as we know, it's important to know there can be long-term consequences from spanking and most parents don't understand that. >> if your child is about to dart out into the street and he freaks you out and you grab his handle and your adrenaline is pumping, you're upset, you swat him on the bottom. that seems like part of parenting. you get frustrated sometimes and you get a little freaked out. >> true. if you look at the data, you'll see 1 in 4 parents who say they

hit their kids describe it as "just losing it," they lost it in that moment. you need to look at how to do it differently the next time. >> to understand the context, the age of the child, a 2-year-old, spanking may not have any consequence for them. the key point is discipline is about teaching. it's not about punishment and control. sometimes in the heat of the moment we lose that, but the key focus is to think about what am i teaching my child by grabbing them or spanking them or picking up something, heaven forbid that i want them to learn? we all want to keep our kids safe. >> so many single moms out there, though, one-parent families, they're exhausted. they're doing everything, and what do you say to someone like that who says, really? you have no idea what my life is like. >> i think we say we understand your pain, however, if your child is under 5, spanking is not what you need to do. it's about time-outs, whether you agree with them or not, it's about understanding developmentally that a 1 1/2-year-old to 2-year-old is going to cry, may hit, may smack you, they're not hurting you on purpose. you have to understand them developmentally. there's a responsibility to

being a parent whether you're a single mom or not. >> a child who is hit is more likely to turn around and hit. you're only going to make the problem worse by hitting them. >> a generational thing. all of us were talking, oh, yeah, i got spanked. now it's such a taboo. it doesn't feel like this group of us has grown up to be such terrible, you know, aggressive people. >> right. there are pretty consistent patterns generally generationally, but people who were spanked as children are more likely to spank. there are regional differences. in the south in the united states, people are more likely to spank than in the north or the west. >> and economic. >> definitely. it's about balance. if you were spanked and five minutes later your mom was giving you a hug and baking you cookies, when you have warmth as a parent, that can balance that. if you're continuously spanked and talked to negatively, you'll be more likely to become aggressive and not understand what the parameters really are. >> i'm going out this weekend to phoenix, arizona, for an event

for child health, which battles child abuse. when people lump that kind of thing in with true child abuse that we see there at child help, it's frustrating. we should keep very clear about what we're talking about. >> with child abuse, the intent is to hurt. >> yeah. >> with spanking, most of us do not want to hurt our children. we just want to keep them safe and teach them a lesson. >> great discussion. >> it could escalate. >> yes. >> not the last time we're going to discuss this. thanks, ladies. up next, julie the accidental housewife, shows you how to get rid of those pet scents. you know what we're talking about. that's henry.

and you want to be sure that you clean and deodorize because they mark their little spots and they'll go again. you want to use ammonia because that's what marks them. the ammonia will track them to pee again. >> don't use ammonia. >> right. i get tongue-tied. i'm getting on my knees because that's how i do this. i love to save money. good, old white vinegar is terrific. and baking soda. the first thing, like i said, is you want to take a microfiber cloth or paper towel so this way you won't -- if you use paper towels, no laundry. you get up as much of the liquid as you can. by the way, very important that you get what's underneath if you can. >> you try. >> after that, you saturate it with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar, okay, and just get it really wet. let that dry for a while. again, what you want to do here, and you shouldn't be drinking when you do this, is --
