we'll go from near record lows this morning to near record highs by the day's end. the warmest time of the day this time of year is typically about 3:00. so we're going to see really comfortable conditions. hazy sunshine. we will tell you when our next chance for rain arrives. but first we want to see how your drive is shaping up at 6:01. >> my sensors have gone from the 20s to the 60s as well. 680, we showed you this big red zone heading south down through the santa ramon valley. between bollinger canyon road and the south of your screen, that's cleared up. should have a nice flow but i have more to show you as things get crowded. 6:01. a shooting and stabbing at a popular san jose karaoke snit spot. several people were hurt at the creek sidebar and grill on alma street.

"today in the bay's" damian trujillo joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: police were out here for about three hours this morning, they got the call just before 2:00. they cleared the scene just before 5:00 this morning. we have new video from today. police towed away a car that had been in the parking lot here at the creek sidebar and grill, presumably to process it for evidence. police say a bystander flagged down a patrol car saying someone had been shot at the karaoke bar. officers later determined three victims were taken to the hospital in private vehicles and police are still looking for the suspect. >> officers heard gunshots at the creek side inn. they responded to the scene and when they arrived there was two people that were injured. later on approximately half-an-hour later we had another person walk in with additional injuries. >> they have karaoke six nights

a week here at the creek side. police have not identified the victims. only to say that they are all male and at this point they do not have a motive. also new this morning, things back to normal after an overnight fire at a redwood city assisted living center. a small kitchen fire broke out there at the wood side terrace just before 1:00 this morning. crews say the sprinkler system did put that fire out. one senior did have to be evacuated because of all of the smoke but so far no injuries reported. that wasn't the only fire overnight on the peninsula. crews got the call to the tesla battery testing facility in palo alto. the sprinkler system also being credited for putting out that two-alarm fire at about 1:00 this morning. there were no reports of any injuries here as well. investigators still right now looking for the exact cause. 6:03 right now. the oakland police department is trying to find the person behind

the city's second homicide of the year. a man was found shot near foothill boulevard and seminary avenue around 9:00 last night. he was pronounced dead at the scene. so far no suspects. this morning san jose police are looking for more possible victims of a teacher accused of sexual assault. the 35-year-old, craig chandler, in jail this morning, held without bail. he's a teacher at an elementary school in san jose for nine years now. assault allegedly happened between august and october of last year but police not saying if he alleged victim was a student at the school. anybody with information on this is asked to call the sexual assault unit. 6:04 right now. a san francisco man accused of several rapes will be arraigned in court today. frederick dozier was charged with 26 counts of attempted murder, robbery and sexual assault. the 32-year-old was arrested last week after police tied him to three violent attacks from

late last year in two neighborhoods. the san jose mother accused of tossing her child from a second story window is also expected in court this morning. a judge will set bail and a preliminary hearing date for the 24-year-old woman. police say cortez barricaded herself and her 22-month-old boy in a bathroom christmas day, then dropped him out a window before jumping herself. she faces several charges including child endangerment. it is looking likely san francisco's newly sworn-in sheriff will face misdemeanor domestic violence charges. the "san francisco chronicle" reporting prosecutors right now convinced video of a bruise on his wife's arm and text messages discussed during this violence was justified for the charges. the alleged incident happened on new year's eve.

his wife says personally she has no complaint against her husband and the incident is taken out of context. christie smith joins us live from pleasanton where a school district is thinking of bringing drug sniffing dogs to three of its high school campuses. >> reporter: good morning. one of the problems here is that the school district is seeing a real spike in drug and alcohol related suspensions at these high schools, up about 40% from last year. so understandably they're worried about it. parents are worried about it. they want something done, although some parents are a little bit concern about a possible invasion of privacy. but the district trustees are considering bringing in the dogs. drug sniffing dogs to the three high schools here. they basically use city police dogs so it wouldn't cost them anything. and it would happen when the students aren't around. the trustees discussed it last night but this morning some people had questions. >> i think it would help but i'm not sure we're going to actually have the dogs.

>> reporter: from what we understand, the answer to the question there, the focus would be school parking lots and lockers. no decision last night but that could come when the trustees meet again january 24th. live in pleasanton, i'm christie smith. back to you. to politics now. mitt romney heading to south carolina today off his big win in new hampshire's primary. romney scoring a decisive win there. ron paul came in second. jon huntsman finished third. newt gingrich failed to break into the top three after hammering away at romney but says the conservative south carolina it will be different. >> we can create a majority that will shock the country and majority that will begin to put us back on the right track. it is doable. >> as for rick santorum, he could not represelicate his iow new hampshire but he's already committed $1 million to his campaign in south carolina. 6:07 right now. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren.

lots of folks getting their kids ready this morning. how should they dress? >> it is kind of cute when you see the kids with the big puffy coats and mittens on. one of those mornings, especially in the north bay with temperatures in the 20s this morning. if your child suffers from asthma or respiratory issues, make sure your child limits their activity today. same for you if you're in that boat. unhealthy levels of solution up in the north bay and down through the santa clara valley. so today works out like this. we are near records this morning. just three degrees away from a new record in videos. i think you will hit about 28 degrees because we're still going to cool off as we get closer to sunrise this morning at 7:25. 34 degrees in livermore. 40 hayward. as we head through noon today, by 10:00 a.m. we're already in the mid 50s in many cities across the bay. we advance the clock to 12:00 p.m. by noon the 60s. then the climb is on. between noon and 3:00

temperatures are going to end up in the 70s in some cities. 72 in fairfield. 72 gilroy. near record warmth today. we'll talk about the next best chance for rain and when we might get better air quality. but first we want to check the drive with mike inouye. in the north where it is also very cold we have a couple of incidents going on. westbound 80 has just started to clear around travis boulevard. we have an accident involving a big rig. it may still be in the lanes though slowing has suddenly cleared up coming out of fairfield. traveling over highway 12 on the screen, an accident at beck. it is a lesser traveled area through the north bay. out of the north bay to the east bay, carquinas bridge. we have back-up in the cash lanes but no metering lights. those are likely turned on in 20 minutes.

golden gate bridge looks like traffic's picking up through the span. we'll check the morning commute to help you start your day. 6:12 right now. software giant oracle making its presence felt right in the heart of of the silicon valley for the first time when it opens some brand-new offices. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us live from downtown san jose. good morning out there, marla. >> reporter: good morning, jon. larry ellison's company making a move into the building it actually owns behind us here. this is the building which is right next to the convention center in downtown san jose. we've reached out to oracle this morning to find out specifics about the move but this is what we can tell you. oracle is said to occupy 3 of the 19 floors here. of course, it is still maintaining its headquarters in redwood shores. the fact that oracle has a big presence in san jose is fantastic news for downtown businesses hoping to draw an oracle crowd. that can only spell good news for our local economy.

the build something a story in itself. it was built in the dotcom era, the dotcom boom. but the slick and shiny building was vacant until 2008 when oracle acquired it. its main tenant is pwc, that's pricewaterhousecoopers, a consulting firm. you might say pwc is now in very good company with oracle. live in downtown san jose this morning, marla tellez. state water monitors say they're not worried yet. but talking the dreaded "d" word -- drought. the department tells the "sacramento bee" while a dry december is not usual, it is hard to recover from a dry january but they say right now we still have plenty of water in res reservoirs from last year's record snowfall. >> last week we you a 18 feet of snow in alaska. maybe they're hogging all the weather, rain and freezing stuff

coming down. maybe she should send some our way. >> it is such a difference from what we had last year at this time. stark difference. >> it is always equal is opposite. usually when it is tranquil on the west coast, they're getting pounded on the east coast. the sun shines down on the equator so that's the warmest area. all that warm air and that -- excuse me, the warmth from the ocean currents flows out to the poles. so it is an easy pay to think of it. the poles are where it is the coldest and the equator things are nice and mild. that's why places like miami, florida, they're in the 80s and we are starting out this morning with temperatures in the 20s. so here's where we're expecting for today. weather headlines show you things will be pretty calm as we head throughout the first part of the day and the rest of the week. let me get this clicker to work here. as you can see -- i'm having a problem with my clicker so i'm going to send it over to mike inouye and get this situation

resolved. to the maps, we see slowing for westbound 580. we see a typical wednesday pattern right here as you come out of the altamont pass, slowing, clustering around north flynn. again from vasco over to the isabel interchange. nothing unusual. a 17-minute drive is what you would expect. no incidents. great news. we'll look at the bay bridge toll plaza, where volume continues to build slowly for a wednesday, pretty normal here as well. cash lanes on either side of the fastrak lanes, fastrak a big advantage and closer to 6:30 is when we'll see the metering lights turn on judging by the volume of traffic from the east shore freeway. now to the south bay, travel times throughout the south bay, northbound routes are what we're concerned with. 101, 280, 85 right now close to the limit. 101 around capital to tully we're seeing the volume start to increase. these three routes are the first to show that slowing typically through the south bay. no problems as you are getting out of that area and heading up the lower bay shore. right there the oregon expressway, on and off ramps all

cleared from construction just as well as the embarcadero on-ramp. we have a disabled vehicle on the on-ramp and little slowing into the city. 6:17 right now. san jose's medical marijuana rules remain in limbo. city council's put up a decision on whether to repeal a referendum limiting pot clubs in the city to ten. the mayor wants voters to decide in june but finance the ref r referendum by increasing the tax. the council put off a decision on that as wale. occasional pot smoking doesn't appear to hurt the lungs the way regular tobacco use does. that's according to a 20-year study publish in the journal of american medical association. study says at the level of one joint a day for seven years there was no decline in lung function. pot smoke contains many of the same chemicals as cigarette smoke. the smoke clearing up a

little bit for the 49ers who now have the parking spaces to go along with their plans for a brand-new stadium. santa clara city council approving a deal to allow the team to use the great america parking lot on game days. this had been a sticking point for opponents who say there will be traffic headaches all over the area. under this deal great america gets to keep most of the profits it makes which makes -- which it actually does share with the city. the raiders are now looking for their seventh coach in the last ten years. team fired hue jackson yesterday. the announcement came after jackson met with new gm reggie mckinzie. mckinzie reportedly thoe lly ton he wants to start fresh but jackson told yahoo! he believes it was owner mark davis' decision to fire him. a good bet warrior fans have big smiles on their faces today. oracle arena last night roshging as golden state took down the mighty miami heat, 111-106 in overtime. the win snaps a five-game losing

streak for the warriors. this is the only -- only the second loss for lebron james and his heat teammates all year long. nice win for the warriors. folks could use a little heat as they head out the door this morning. >> we're going to get that later on today. way to go, warriors, taking down the big three. we're looking good. we'll see some really comfortable days. by this weekend the clouds increase so not as warm. next week have a good chance for showers on wednesday. grab the jacket this morning, it is cold out there. places like napa, in the 20s. there's that area of low pressure, that brushed up against the bay area yesterday. we didn't get a lot of moisture out of it. it is going to continue to drift to the south as we head throughout the day and high pressure moves right back in. the reason why we haven't had rain is because that big ring of high pressure will not break down and head to the east as it typically does this time of year. so we are looking towards that to be the case as we head into wednesday and thursday of next week, that's the most promising time for rain right here in the

commute. bridge district proposing a $65 monthly fee at its larkspur parking lot and they are also considering a 5% fare increase for riders on the larkspur and sausalito ferries are use the clipper card. starting july 1st, if passed, one-way from larkspur would increase to $6 and sausalito fares would also go up from $4.85 to $5. fannie mae's ceo is stepping down. williams took over the government controlled mortgage giant in 2009. he will stay on until fannie mae's board names a new successor. the firm still struggling. in november reported a net third quarter loss of more than $5 billion. expect to see some ads soon in your new facebook feed. >> facebook would prefer we

good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. it is almost 6:30. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> inland temperatures are forecast in the 70s in some cities later today. what we are expecting this morning though, some records from santa rosa all the way up to the north bay, temperatures are cold this morning. i think we'll break records in hayward, napa, maybe even oakland later on today. from near record cold to near record warmth all in one day, very unusual. we'll tell you when we might get some rain and better air quality, it is a "spare the air" day. first let's see how your drive is building. the cold might be one of the reasons folks are huddling together at toll plaza but i have a feeling it is because of the metering lights. the system is not yet on. there goes the camera. just taking a little yawn there. a smooth drive up and down the east shore freeway but the

volume continues to build. we'll show you more slowing speed sensors when we come back. 6:30. new this morning, a popular san jose night spot right now remains a crime scene. several people were shot or stabbed overnight at the creek sidebar and grill on alma street. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live at the scene and has developments. >> reporter: good morning. police have cleared the crime street here on alma street but they are still looking for the suspect or suspects in this shooting and stabbing here at the creek side grill. just about an hour and a half ago they towed away a silver car from the parking lot of the creek side, presumably to process it for evidence. a bystander flagged down a patrol car just before 2:00 in morning saying someone had been shot. turns out someone drove the victims to the hospital in a private vehicle but it's been a busy morning for police. >> officers heard gunshots at

being credited here for helping put that two-alarm fire out about 2:00 this morning. there were no injuries to report here as well and investigators still looking for the cause. san francisco fire crews spent the night mopping up a large apartment fire that started just before 9:00 last night near 11th and folsom street near slim's nightclub. when crews arrived the building's roof was fully engulfed. you can see the smoke billowing out there. crews got the fire under control. so far no reports of any injury or damage estimates. 6:33 right now. a much needed crime fighting tool or an invasion of privacy? an east bay school district is considering an extreme tactic to keep drugs off campus. today in the bay's christie smith is live in pleasanton where officials may be brig drug sniffing dogs to three high schools. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, parents and administrators here in pleasanton have come forward with their concerns. one of the issues they are discussing is the fact that drug

and alcohol related suspensions at the high schools have gone up about 40% from previous years. so the school district trustees met last night. one of the things they're considering is using drug sniffing dogs at the three high schools here in pleasanton. they would use the city's police dogs so it wouldn't cost any additional money. at least to the district and the searches would focus on school parking lots and lockers when students are in class. some parents are saying they're worried that this would be an invasion of privacy for the students but many spoke out saying that they feel under the circumstances it is necessary. no decision last night but the district is expected to decide by the end of the month whether to use the dogs. live in pleasanton, christie smith. back to you. >> thanks a lot. occupy oakland continues to stir up some trouble, this time with the bay area media. the bay area news group has apparently sent a cease and desist letter to occupy protesters over a new website

called occupied oakland tribune. the site publishes articles written by occupy protesters but the media claims it tarnishes the oakland tribune name. occupy oakland says it will defend its first amendment rights. facebook posts by officers are said to have leaked the news of a raid before it happened. a commander elaborated saying officers posted things like "it's game time" and word spread. that commander says the department has a new policy. officers taking part in raids will not be informed until 45 minutes before. 6:35 right now. i feel like the whole new year we've gotten a belated christmas gift. cold start today but sunshine is coming up. >> exactly, jon. a lot of us feeling spoiled and we've got more of the same for

today. the one and only rain chance we had for the work week that yesterday. we didn't get much of anything at all. as a result our air quality is suffering. we have unhealthy levels of pollution, particulate matter in the north bay and santa clara valley. elsewhere moderate air quality. we'll likely be sparing the air again tomorrow unless our winds pick up enough to mix up the atmosphere. i don't think that's going to be the case, especially not in san francisco. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures are looking pretty comfortable but we're going to start out really cold. if you have not yet been outside, make sure you've got the jacket handy. it is going to be another cold one as we head throughout the afternoon. i'm forecasting another record highs yet again today. we're going to go from near record lows to near record highs in the matter of 24 hours. something i've never actually seen before in all my days of forecasting weather. it all works out like this for today. temperatures climb from the upper 20s and low 30s into the 50s by 10:00 a.m. as we head throughout the

remainder of the day, maxing out with the 70s. looking pretty good. watch out for a little bit of black ice potentially up in the north bay but yeah, look at that. by noon up to 60 degrees in san jose. you're peeling off layers. let's talk to mike and see how your drive's shaping up this morning. you're talk ugg about the north bay and warning for black ice, that's that thin layer of ice that's so clear it looks like the black roadway. right now we're looking at a disabled vehicle off the richmond-san rafael bridge. no problems today. it sounds like traffic's getting by. coming over from the richmond side, approaching down through richmond east shore freeway top of your screen, speeds into the 50s now as well as at the bottom of your screen, northbound 880 through oakland approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. both of those routes heading toward the toll plaza. where you'll see this back-up, those metering lights are on. now those lanes barely moving from the 880 overcrossing to the

in the world of politics, sometimes this happens -- the polls got it right. mitt romney, the winner in new hampshire with ron paul and jon huntsman coming in second and third. "today in the bay" tracie potts is live in manchester with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. of course we've been talking a lot about votes and percentages and who won what but this eventually will come down to delegates, how many delegates can a candidate get at the republican convention to become the nominee. this morning we understand that the delegates have been apportioned for new hampshire. seven for mitt romney, three for ron paul, two for jon huntsman who came in third so eventually it is those totals that will determine the nominee. but the vote totals here were significant. they were decisive for mitt romney. it was the decisive win that his campaign said he would get. there was some question at one point based on the number of conservative voters but in fact he ended up getting a decisive

winds yet again, temperatures are going to be on the climb. oakland probably a new temperature record for you. and the same goes for concord. so make sure you've got that jacket but the short sleeves, you can always wear those underneath. especially as we head through the next couple of days. high pressure is the reason for the lack of reason. we've got this big ridge of high pressure that just won't budge. that keeps our skies clear but it also nudges storm track away to the north. as we head throughout the remainder of the week we're not expecting any more rain. we are expecting more sunshine and unhealthy air quality and a result of the stagnant air mass set up. i don't think this will be our only "spare the air" today. i think tomorrow or friday we'll have to do it again. 69 in livermore later on today. the rest of the week staying dry but then things change next week and we have a really good chance for showers late tuesday, wednesday and thursday for the greater bay area. we'll keep tracking that for you. mike is tracking your drive right now. 6:46. as we see the build for the south bay, 101, capital up past

the airport, 87, 75 showing yellow sensors. that translates to travel times, 101 speeds below 50 on average from 237 up -- from 680 up to 237. 85 and 280 showing slowing as well as highway 87 coming into downtown just about to turn yellow for most of those, average speeds there. lower bay shore not a problem once out of san jose, mountain view and palo alto move very smoothly. 101, 280 through the peninsula, nice flow as well. construction crews kick off around willow and that's a distraction. oakland, past the coliseum, northbound the volume picking up. speeds into the 50s as you travel through downtown. southbound side also sees some slowing through downtown as well as right around the 92 interchange. further east livermore shows typical pattern, slow, 21 minutes out of the altamont pass

to the dublin interchange. 6:47. police are investigating a shooting and stabbing at a popular san jose karaoke night spot. several people were hurt at the creek sidebar and grill on alma street. damian trujillo joins us live from the scene. police are still looking for the suspect or suspects in the stabbing and shooting here at the creek side. violence erupted just before 2:00 this morning here on alma street. police towed a silver car from the parking lot about 5:00 this morning. they'll process it for evidence. officers say someone flagged down a patrol car saying someone had been shot at the creek side. three people were taken to the hospital in a private vehicle with non-life threatening injuries. police will not say if -- that a manhunt is under way, only that they are trying to gather evidence to identify a possible suspect. we will give you more information on this case as it becomes available. live in san jose, i'm damian

trujillo. back to you. also new this morning, a small kitchen fire forces the evacuation of a redwood city assisted living center. flames broke out at the wood side terrace just before 1:00 a.m. it it was started in the kitchen of one of the units but was quick will you evacuated. one senior was evacuated because of smoke but no reports of injuries. flames broke out at a tesla motors battery testing facility in palo alto. the sprinkler system there also credited for putting out the two-alarm fire at 1:00 this morning. so far no injuries reported and investigators still looking for the cause. 6:49 right now. the oakland police department is trying to find the person behind the city's second homicide of the year. a man was found shot near foothill pull vard aboulevard a avenue, pronounced dead at the scene. there are no suspects at this

time. a san jose elementary schoolteacher jailed this morning accused of sexually assaulting a child. 35-year-old craig chandler was arrested last night for an assault between august and october of last year. he's been teaching at that school in san jose for nine years but it is not known if the victim was actually a student there. san jose police are trying to determine if there are other victims. it is an extreme idea to keep drugs off some east bay high school campuses. the pleasanton school district is considering using drug sniffing dogs from the city's police department in the locker rooms and parking lots at three high schools in pleasanton. the dogs would patrol during school hours on certain days. the district hasn't made a decision on the proposal just yet. one could come at the board's january 24th meeting. one of the biggest tech companies in the bay area moving to the heart of silicon valley for the very first time. oracle's brand-new offices. >> reporter: good morning. oracle of course is still headquartered in redwood shores on the peninsula but you can see the software giant's name posted right in front of this building. this is in downtown san jose. it is the tower that sat empty for most of its life the victim of the recession but not anymore. oracle now takes up 3 of the 19 floors, around 66,000 square feet. ellison's company inherited this building in '08. most office space here is consumed by the consulting firm pwc. they moved in just over a year ago with some 1,200 employees. this means only about 10% of this building is vacant which is fantastic news for downtown which is just a few blocks away. now i have reached out to oracle this morning. they have declined comment. we're live in downtown san jose this morning, marla tellez.

also this morning, a heavyweight california lawmaker helping announce a big push to fight sexual sploidation here in california. at 10:00 congresswoman jackie spear, former facebook privacy officer marc klaas and others will launch a signature gathering drive to put the californians against sexual exploitation acts on the november ballot. spear has said human trafficking is a tragedy and it does take place around the bay area. this morning's announcement will be made in san francisco. new this morning, iran is blaming israel for a car bombing that killed a nuclear scientist. it says today's bombing is similar to previous attacks that killed other scientists. the man who died worked at a rain yam enrichment facility. bombing happened as u.s. treasury secretary timothy geithner is visiting china trying to get that country on board with tougher economic sanctions against iran. today north korea says it is open to suspending parts of its

nuclear program in exchange for food aid from the u.s. it is a deal that appeared imminent before kim jong-il's death. a statement issued today did take a shot at washington for politicizing the food shipments but will see if the u.s. wants to show confidence in north korea. it was ten years ago today the very first prisoner arrived at the u.s. naval base in guantanamo bay, cuba. the u.s. started imprisoning what it called enemy combatants at the base at the start of the afghan war. president obama ordered the facility closed back in january of 2009 but congressional road blocks slowed down the closing and debate continues over the exist tene existence of the prisoner and its policy. >> this is an anniversary of tragedy, of pain, of torment, of families being ripped apart, of

a dark page in modern history of humanity. >> since the beginning a total of 779 prisoners have passed through guantanamo. that according to the defense department. detectives are about to set aside the investigation into the death of actress natalie wood. the l.a. county sheriff's department says they have no new evidence. woods died while sailing off the catalina island in 1981. sheriff's department reopened the case in november based on an interview with the boat's captain. the case will probably not be completely closed just yet. joran van der sloot goes back into the courtroom for his murder trial today. it's been five days since the accused killer asked for more time to reflect on his plea. on friday van der sloot indicated that he was willing to make a confession in the 2010 killing of a woman in peru. if van der sloot pleads not guilty the trial will presume in front of three judges and no
