on a friday. there is oakland 880. 98th avenue overcrossing there, and we did have earlier police activity that ended up around this interchange. the on and off ramps are open. no flashing lights but off of the freeway you might see a little bit of activity. we're tracking that in the newsroom to see if this will affect your day for a period of time. so far it's not affecting traffic. that's good news. >> great news. we'll take it. thank you. it's 5:01. we're following developing news this morning from san francisco where police are investigating an attack on two women including a senior citizen. it happened on 20th avenue last night. bob redell joins us live from san francisco where police say both women are in the hospital with life threatening injuries. serious attack, bob. >> reporter: yes, and they are trying to find out, figure out, why someone would attack a 70-year-old woman in her home, was it robbery or something else. whatever the motive, the results were devastating. that woman and another woman are

both at sf general both in serious condition. we understand that the elderly woman is fighting for her life. the assaults took place last night around 9:20 at this home here behind me on 20th near norry aga. someone assaulted the woman in the home, then another woman showed up at the home, happened to show up to deliver chinese food. apparently unaware of what was going on inside. the attacker turned on her as well. we understand he used a knife with one woman, a hammer on the other. the lady delivering the food was able to make it back to the restaurant which is around the corner where her employees called 911. as i mentioned both women at sf general very serious condition, the elderly woman's skn life threatening. the attacker did get away. no arrests so far. >> bob, thank you. it's 5:02. oakland police need your help. searching for the man who fatally shot an east bay father

in front of his son. jose was shot in august of last year while leaving a market in east oakland. police released new sketches of the men they think were involved. the suspected shooter, a black man between the ages of 17 and 20 years old, about 5'10" with a dark complexion and dread locks. his accomplice is also a black man, between 17 and 20 years old with short hair. >> domestic abuse charges could be filed today against san francisco's newest sheriff, ross mirkarimi. the d.a. is looking at the case and will decide today or early next week whether to file charges. domestic violence advocates are demanding that the sheriff resign. they say the city should not have elected law enforcement official who is under a criminal investigation. mirkarimi is accused of grabbing his wife's arm, causing a bruise. his wife says it is a family matter taken out of context. >> crews now trying to figure

out the cause of a big time explosion in mountain view. this one was a huge blaze. the flames were as high at one point to be seen all the way from the 101. damian trujillo is live at the scene. he has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this is baffling pg&e crews behind me. here is the main concern, it's the second tower on your right. someone heard an explosion or a pop on the tower and you can still see the cables hanging over some of these trees here over the stevens creek trail. this is causing concern for pg&e. this is near the microsoft campus north of moffett field. drivers reported seeing a bright glow coming from the area. at this point pg&e is trying to determine if it was a transformer that blew. the explosion caused a minor vegetation fire around the trail. that was put out immediately. 372 customers remained without

pow power. power was restored after midnight. these are not your residential power lines, these are the big high voltage transmission lines. they created quite a headache for the utility. part of stevens creek trail are also closed because there are still some of those downed power lines, and crews can't say when things will be back to normal. they say they are waiting for heavy equipment to arrive here at the scene so they are waiting for that before they can remove some of these power lines and fix this problem. live in mountain view. damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, damian. it's 5:05. a national chain issuing a recall and warning after some very disturbing test findings. bed bath & beyond says the metal in one of its tissue holders is contaminated with low levels of radioactivity. it was first detected on a truck headed for stores in santa clara and san jose. bed bath & beyond says about 220

boxes have now tested positive. the holder was sent to 200 stores since july. if you have one you can return it to the store for a full refund. the nuclear regulators commission says there is no risk to your held but it's better to avoid unnecessary radiation. >> it's 5:06. two soldiers injured in afghanistan will be receiving the purple heart tomorrow at palo alta v.a., jeffrey cueto was injured back in november and samisi suffered a brain injury in a rocket attack. both men being treated at the v.a.'s rehab center. >> for the class of 2012 getting into uv going to be harder. the system says applications from in-state high school applicants are up almost 10%. applications from non-coloradoans are up 56

percent. they plan to enroll more students and admit more non-californians. they pay more a year in tuition and fees. >> no question, california's high speed rail plan has seen a lot of criticism over the past few months. now the man charged with leading the project is jumping ship. the the ceo of the high speed rail authority says she leaving for personal reasons. the announcement coming at a time when the project has faced severe criticism from lawmakers and the general public. the rail authority recently doubled the estimated cost of the project to $100 billion over 20 years. >> pay cash and you could pay more. that kubld new policy looked at by cal train. the agency is talking about increasing one-way cash fares, 25%. if someone takes cal train from zone 1 to san jose's zone 6 it can cost $1.25 more.

highway 4 not showing slowing. about a half hour from now we should see the westbound chiclets turning green to orange. 580 with no problems. no numbers now, the average should be 14 and it's out of the altamont pass. smooth to the dublin interchange. >> we have good news, the bison at golden gate park are back together after being quarantined for six weeks. the baby bison have joined the main herd. the six were introduced yesterday, they were -- there were seven juveniles shipped but one died after being chased by a dog that managed to get into the paddock. >> occupy oakland is blamed for uprooting a popular event. the running festival says it's relocating because of problems with occupy campers at the plaza. until this year the event started and ended at the plaza. organizers say to keep runners happy they moved the start of the race to snow park.

20s. overall temperatures are running about 3 to 4 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. as a result of that i'm bumping your numbers up 3 or 4 degrees throughout this afternoon. for the greater bay area we're talking about the mid to upper 60s inland. at the coast, the low to mid-60s with hazy sunshine. it's going to be gorgeous, clear conditions. we only get two more days of beautiful weather. santa rosa, you'll hit 70. you can hit the beach in santa cruz, 67. los gatos and 73 degrees today in gilroy. you can see, some of our cities like oakland are going to be also on the warm side. these are near records again. we get one more day of stellar sunshine, that's tomorrow, then things start to change. you can see that from my seven-day forecast. temperatures tumble. look at the the drop between saturday and sunday from 67 to 59 degrees, that's when our skies start to turn gray. the clouds roll in, we're dealing with fog, and then the rain showers arrive. it looks like late tsdaynto

wednesday our first round. that will impact the northern end of the bay area. by thursday we're talking about measurable rain, maybe a quarter to a half inch across the bay area. this system is looking juicy. that's great for the sierra nevada. right now let's talk to mike. is it friday light? >> certainly friday the 13th as far as my sensors and computers go but we're able to sort it out. looks like a lighter volume for a friday. we're looking at this disabled truck that was partly blocking the on ramp to southbound 17. that should be cleared in the next couple of minutes. leaving the house now you should be fine. at the the top of the screen, as you approach 880 on 237 eastbound heading out of milpitas toward the interchange we have construction crews. that has resulted in some slows over the last ten minutes. crews should be clearing from the interchange. we expect that new express lane to open, probably by the end of

the mot month. northbound 101. one lane was blocked. that should be cleared but i'll leave this in for the next few minutes. a smooth drive fast dumbarton bridge, crossing the water, easy drive at westbound with his taillights. no problems for visibility. you can see the high rise and the golden gate bridge similar situation but no high rise. back to you. >> thank you, mike. investors will try to extend their win streak on wall street. for details and the rest of the news before the bell we turn to bertha coombs. good morning. >> good morning. we've got the futures now kind of flat, yesterday we did start to the down side and ended on an up note. we started down after jobless claims were more than expected and retail sales rose less than expected. this morning in about 10 minutes or so we'll get data on the trade deficit, import prices and consumer sentiment.

jpmorgan, disappointing, not as strong as some on wall street were expecting. the dow ended up though, 21 points to 12471. looking at a 1% gain, the second straight week of gains. the nasdaq up 13 to 2724, looking at a 2% gain for the week. if you are curious, wall street doesn't suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia, the fear of friday the 13th. stocks are higher and close higher. video games well 21%. consumers bought fewer games. while not surprising the tally was disappointing especially since we had a big debut with call of duty modern 3 warfare. consoles are long in the tooth. the x box 360 turns seven and the play station 3 and the wii.

delta prices were up. they raised by $20. and that price hike was matched on thursday by american, united, continental, u.s. airways and southwest. don't imagine it will hurt the folk goesing to the golden globes. i bet a lot of them don't fly commercial. >> probably don't pay for it either. >> 5:20. the california public utilities commission one step closer to fining pg&e for that deadly san bruno pipe line explosion. the commission approving a scathing report that says that pg&e broke several state and federal safety laws leading up to the disaster that killed eight people. a record blaming the corporate culture, seeing the company value profits over safety. it accuses pg&e of collecting more than a half billion from rate payers for system repairs

>> it is. would you like me to do this one? i shall. two women now in the hospital in san francisco with life threatening injuries after what was just a brutal attack last night. it all happened on 20th avenue in the golden gate heights neighborhood. bob redell is now live in san francisco. he is there with the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, jon, whoever did this was merciless, using a hammer and possibly a knife as well to attack both of those women. as you mentioned they are both in the hospital with at least one with life threatening injuries, the attack around 9:20 last night. in the home here on 20th. the 70-year-old woman was one of those who was brutally assaulted. some time during the attack another woman happened to show up to deliver chinese food. apparently unaware of what was going on. the attacker then started assaulting her as well. she was badly hurt but able to run to her restaurant where her colleagues called 911.

both women at sf general. we believe it's the elderly woman fighting for her life. police are looking for the attacker, no indication on what the motive was behind this attack. jon, laura. >> amazing. thank you. it's 5:33. 40-year-old livermore teacher accused of having sex with a student is set to make her first court appearance. police say marie johnson had a 6-month long relationship with a 14-year-old boy. johnson is facing 24 counts of sexual assault. it started with text messages, facebook communication and the game words with friends. johnson is on administrative leave. also in court, san jose teacher accused of assaulting a student at o.b. whaley elementary school. 35-year-old craig chandler worked at the school for nine years. chandler is on leave. san jose police are trying to

track down other potential victims. the man accused in a string of sexual assaults in san francisco returns to court. the judge is expected to appoint a lawyer. he faces several charges of sexual assault and attempted murder. he is accused of attacking three women from june to december of last year. >> city workers in oakland bracing for 1500 new layoff notices all set to go out next week. however, fewer than 200 employees are actually expected to lose their job. the city does want to make sure that everybody is prepared for the worst. the layoffs prompted by the loss of $30 million in redevelopment money. >> it's a paradigm shift for the state of california. we have been ordered to dissolve redevelopment. and many other local governments and other cities are dealing with the same issue in their own way. >> those notices will go to employees in just about every city department except for police and fire departments.

in santa cruz. your forecasted high is 70 degrees so you can hit the beach. maybe taking the day off of work. well, do so because things change next week. we're not going to get the beach days, we're getting a much different pattern. a frosty start making the way to mid-60s, then a couple of 70s in the warmest cities across the bay. 73 in fairfield and 63 degrees in san francisco. things change next week. we've got a lot of rain on the way. this isn't looking like a weak system. it's looking good for sierra snow. we'll talk about that in the full forecast. let's check your drive. you don't want problems on a friday. mike's going to help. >> an earlier issue in the south bay has shifted location, actually. this may be more of an issue now. this is camden avenue. we have the issue at the on ramp to southbound 17. that cleared from the on ramp but it has not from the area.

brian mooar is live in washington with a look at what the candidates are going to do now. good morning. >> good morning. effective or not the romney camp called the attacks on mitt romney and his business record desperate. mitt romney was in the cross-fire and between newt gingrich and rick perry who were each trying to attack his business credentials, but it was clear to the republican establishment that it wasn't helping the opponent, it certainly wasn't helping romney who looks like he's on track to become the nominee. so they asked them to dial them back. each candidate, perry, gingrich, unrepentant, not apologizing for what they did, but now they have to look forward another winning message. that with eight days before the south carolina primary. mitt romney hearsay his own set of problems, trying to convince conservatives in that very conservative state he is in fact

conservative enough. jon huntsman still hunting for votes. ron paul the wild card is unclear what he could do at this point. and then there's rick santorum who failed to capitalize on his big second place finish in iowa, he did okay in new hampshire. but he's failing to catch fire in the palmetto state. jon. >> thank you, brian. >> many of the candidates having trouble getting on the ballot in some states. a hearing will be held this morning on how virginia conducts its primary. right now only virginia residents can circulate petitions to get candidates on the ballot. if the candidate does not have virginians willing to circulate they cannot be included. one judge said tuesday it is probably unconstitutional. >> new report finds candidates having trouble getting on the ballot in other states as well. rick santorum, jon huntsman, failed to qualify. in some cases failed to come up with a full slate of delegates.

posed on facebook. when do we get the rain, the sierra snow. looks like that's going to change as we head through the midsection and the late section of next week. the big difference is this ridge of high pressure is going to break down. that's pushing all of our cloud cover out to sea. this guy heads to the east, breaks down allowing for rain to come to the bay area. temperatures are going to be much cooler starting sunday they tumble. in san jose, 63, san francisco and 67 degrees in los gatos. and i will be posting updates on the storm on my facebook page so check ahead. through the seven-day, 70 degrees today, by tomorrow we'll drop off, 59 on sunday. look at the difference between saturday and sunday. not only are we going to b cooler, we are going to be much cloudier, back to normal when it comes to the typical bay area january pattern. then the rain arrives tuesday into wednesday. everybody gets a good chance for rain on thursday.

i think we'll see maybe a quarter to a half inch of rain over the greater bay area. we need that rain and we're looking good for that. right now let's get you to work on time with our mike inouye. >> good morning. i want to point out a few things. bear with me. we have very, very mild slowing through antioch. that's great. the commute direction looks light for this friday but we have an accident westbound around willow pass east. there is an accident in the westbound direction. sounds like all activity is to the shoulder. we have reports after wrong way driver for highway 4. may be two cars. just a report now but we're watching that. of course watch this area between pittsburgh and bay point. if you are traveling westbound be very sure you know what's going on. nothing else reported now. we'll track that and a smooth drive for the rest of the area.

a light volume holding up at the toll plaza, a live look will show you that. starting to pick up a bit but no problems off of the east shore freeway. obviously no metering lights and the span in both directions move slowly. reminder that camden avenue has that disabled rig. the freeways are clear. >> thank you. it's 5:49. a woman who claims she survived a sexual assault by joseph nasois scheduled to testify at the preliminary hearing of the accused serial killer. he is accused of killing four women between 1997 and 1994. yesterday prosecutors introduced evidence of possible new victims. investigators testified that photos of two unidentified women who appeared dead were found in his deposit box. also there the articles of a woman who disappeared on the way to a concert in san francisco. >> of course, mike inouye happy

to report highway 85 is now running smoothly this morning after being closed most of yesterday. it all started with a bank robbery at a bank of america on snow avenue around 1130. one of the suspects walked right in the bank and threatened the teller with some type of device. he took cash, jumped into a blue honda. the car crashed into a minivan near the highway 85 and 87 interchange. one of the men who saw the accident happened to be an off duty security guard. he says when he saw one of the two men trying to run away instincts kicked in. >> i felt a general adrenalin rush. i thought i have to do something. put him in an arm bar. at that point i called 911. told the police what was going on, i had a suspect in custody. a second fled. >> nice work. police sent the bomb squad in just in case the device that the

robber had was real. they detonated the potential explosive there. the other was caught at gunderson high school. >> 5:50 now. constitutionally in big -- prompting posted warnings. one of the big cats was spotted tuesday night next to the university family housing where dozens of kids live and play. parents say too close for comfort. >> the dumpster is over there. i imagine they are going to look for it. generally we used to feel they are so scared off by us. it gets quiet at night. >> the sightings follow another on lawrence road last month. they say additional sightings along with several carcasses point to mountain lion activity. officers are reminding people to not walk alone in the hills and keep an eye on kids and pets. if you see a mountain lion, you

never in my lifetime did i think i could walk 60 miles in 3 days. 60 miles in 3 days is-- is huge. if my mom can fight and beat breast cancer, i can walk 60 miles. you just put one foot in front of the other, and you know that you're walking for such a great cause that you just keep going.
